Atomic Structure and Dynamics of Unusual and Wide-Gap Phase-Change Chalcogenides: A GeTe 2 Case

Brain-inspired computing, reconfigurable optical metamaterials, photonic tensor cores, and many other advanced applications require next-generation phase-change materials (PCMs) with better energy efficiency and a wider thermal and spectral range for reliable operations. Germanium ditelluride (GeTe 2 ), with higher thermal stability and a larger bandgap compared to current benchmark PCMs, appears promising for THz metasurfaces and the controlled crystallization of atomically thin 2D materials. Using high-energy X-Ray diffraction supported by first-principles simulation, the atomic structure in semiconducting pulsed laser deposition films and metallic high-temperature liquids is investigated. The results suggest that the structural and chemical metastability of GeTe 2 , leading to disproportionation into GeTe and Te, is related to high internal pressure during a semiconductor–metal transition, presumably occurring in the supercooled melt. Similar phenomena are expected for canonical GeS 2 and GeSe 2 under high temperatures and pressures.

High surface area magnetic double perovskite La 2 AlFeO 6 as an efficient and stable photo-Fenton catalyst under a wide pH range

Photo-Fenton process is an efficient way to treat the organic pollutants in wastewater. However, the efficiency is limited by serious leaching of iron ion, separation of spent catalyst from reaction system for facile recycling, low (pH<4) reaction environment. Herein, we report a preparation of a novel magnetic double perovskite photocatalyst La2AlFeO6, and refractory organic pollutants like phenol, etc. were used as probes to test the efficiency of catalyst. The results showed that the catalytic material retained high surface area and high ratio of Fe 3+ on its surface, and the generated ·OH, ·O 2 - and 1 O 2 lead to a highly photocatalytic efficiency even at neutral pH condition. In addition, the as prepared double perovskite photocatalyst La 2 AlFeO 6 also exhibits excellent stable and magnetic properties. There is no iron ion leaching detected during the courses of the reaction. Furthermore, the spent catalyst can be separated by magnetic field easily, and thus can be reused after simple air drying without any further treatment or calcination.

Survey-wide asteroid discovery with a high-performance computing enabled non-linear digital tracking framework

Modern astronomical surveys detect asteroids by linking together their appearances across multiple images taken over time. This approach faces limitations in detecting faint asteroids and handling the computational complexity of trajectory linking. Here, we present a novel method that adapts “digital tracking” – traditionally used for short-term linear asteroid motion across images – to work with large-scale synoptic surveys such as the Vera Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time (Rubin/LSST). Our approach combines hundreds of sparse observations of individual asteroids across their non-linear orbital paths to enhance detection sensitivity by several magnitudes. To address the computational challenges of processing massive data sets and dense orbital phase spaces, we developed a specialized high-performance computing architecture. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method through experiments that take advantage of the extensive computational resources at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. This work enables the detection of significantly fainter asteroids in existing and future survey data, potentially increasing the observable asteroid population by orders of magnitude across different orbital families, from near-Earth objects (NEOs) to Kuiper belt objects (KBOs).

Metabolic flux analysis reaching genome wide coverage: lessons learned and future perspectives

13 C-MFA is currently the only technique capable of elucidating intracellular metabolic fluxes. Generally, in 13 C-MFA studies the reactions that can carry flux are mostly pre-specified by only considering canonical pathways and ignoring alternate ones. This may bias flux elucidation and cause labeling data to erroneously confirm implied assumptions. Here, by expanding the scope of the metabolic mapping models to match known genome-scale metabolism such estimation biases can be eliminated. However, this model expansion to genome-scale requires the construction of expanded atom mapping models, more efficient flux estimation algorithms, and formal estimation of confidence levels. Even though significant progress has been made in this direction, a number of challenges remain before widespread adoption by the community.

A wide range experimental and kinetic modeling study of the oxidation of 2,3-dimethyl-2-butene: Part 1

2,3-Dimethyl-2-butene (TME) is a potential fuel additive with high research octane number (RON) and octane sensitivity (S), which can improve internal combustion engine performance and efficiency. However, the combustion characteristics of TME have not been comprehensively investigated. Thus, it is essential to study the combustion characteristics of TME and construct a detailed chemical kinetic model to describe its combustion. In this paper, two high-pressure shock tubes and a constant-volume reactor are used to measure ignition delay times and laminar flame speeds of TME oxidation. Further, the ignition delay times were measured at equivalence ratios of 0.5, 1.0, and 2.0 in “air”, at pressures of 5 and 10 bar, in the temperature range of 950 – 1500 K. Flame speeds of the TME/ “air” mixtures were measured at atmospheric pressure, at a temperature of 325 K, for equivalence ratios ranging from 0.78 to 1.31. Two detailed kinetic mechanisms were constructed independently using different methodologies; the KAUST TME mechanism was constructed based on NUIGMech1.1, and the MIT TME mechanism was built using the Reaction Mechanism Generator (RMG). Both mechanisms were used to simulate the experimental results using Chemkin Pro. In the present work, reaction flux and sensitivity analyses were performed using the KAUST mechanism to determine the critical reactions controlling TME oxidation at the conditions studied.

Carbon management technology pathways for reaching a U.S. Economy-Wide net-Zero emissions goal

The Carbon Management Study Group of the 37 th Energy Modeling Forum (EMF 37) designed seven scenarios to explore the role of three potentially key technology suites – point source carbon dioxide capture and storage (PSCCS), direct air capture of carbon dioxide (DACCS), and hydrogen systems (H 2 ) – in shaping the broader technology pathways to reaching net-zero carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions in United States by 2050. Each scenario was run by up to 13 models participating in the EMF 37 study. Results show that carbon dioxide removal technologies were consistently a major part of successful pathways to net-zero U.S. CO 2 emissions in 2050. Achieving this net-zero CO 2 goal without any form of carbon dioxide capture and storage was found to be impossible for most models; some models also found it impossible to reach net-zero without DACCS. The marginal cost of achieving net-zero CO 2 emissions in 2050 was between two and 10 times higher without PSCCS and/or DACCS available. The carbon price at which DACCS was deployed as a backstop technology depended upon the assumed cost at which DACCS was available at scale. Carbon prices were between $\$$250 and $\$$500 per ton CO 2 when DACCS deployed as a backstop. The average CO 2 capture rate across all models in 2050 in the central net-zero scenario was 1.3 GtCO 2 /year, which implies a substantial upscaling of capacity to move and store CO 2 . Finally, hydrogen sensitivity scenarios showed that H 2 typically constituted a relatively small share of the overall U.S. energy system; however, H 2 deployed in applications that are considered hard to decarbonize, facilitating transition towards net-zero emissions.
