Ground hold test of fiberglass constrictive wrap, hermetically sealed, foam insulated, full scale Centaur tank filled with liquid hydrogen
Modified soldering iron extracts a wrap-around solar cell that is attached with solder or adhesive to a substrate without destroying the cell removed or damaging adjacent cells. Heat, vacuum, and compressed air, operated from a special head attached to the soldering iron, loosen, extract, and protect the cell.
Transloader moves delicate or heavy items over irregular surfaces without transmitting stress to the load. The loader is supported on three pivot points which produce a wrap free base. The base is supported by an artificial four-wheel frame.
Workpieces covered with phenolic impregnated asbestos tape and then wrapped with a specified thickness of nylon yarn under pressure, are debulked and cured in a standard oven. This method of debulking and curing is used in the fabrication of ablative chambers for the Gemini and Apollo attitude control engines.

Multilayered capacitor with one-mil thick pyrolytic boron nitride and wrap around sputtered electrodes achieves parallel electrical interconnections in a stacked configuration of 3 to 9 wafers. These capacitors are compact, lightweight, and suitable for operation in high temperatures without supplemental cooling.

Saran was tested for flammability as a wrapping on TFE-insulated electrical wire bundles in oxygen gas at pressures of 7.5 psia and 14.7 psia. It was found to be fire retardant or self-extinguishing in most instances.
Principal efforts in this reporting period were applied to preparation of the detail design of the array structure and mechanisms and to manufacturing drawings for a demonstration model of the selected design concept. Analytical support focused on substantiation of the detail design. Additional studies were performed of dynamic criteron effects on components of the wrap drum. Thermal studies were extended to evaluate another thin film (preferred) material for the substrate and its influence on solar cell temperatures. Electrical design considerations included feasibility studies and ramifications of using a new, larger size, solar cell and a new coverglass application concept. Preliminary evaluations suggest improvement in the array power to weight characteristic and net savings in the estimated cost of cell installation. Weight estimates have been up-dated in keeping with refinements in detail design. Performance of this contractor's rollout solar array design is now projected as capable of producing 31.6 watts per pound of weight; excludes estimated improvements from use of new solar cell design.

Nonflammable paper is made from fibers of chrysotile asbestos, beta-glass fibers, glass microfibers, and a little nonflammable organic binder. It does not propagate flame in an atmosphere of 16.5-psig oxygen, and it is resistant to rot and mold, making it acceptable as wrapping material and for stored documents.
Welding external aluminum jacket, tightly wrapped around inner layer of wood composition fiberboard, in oxygen free environment prevents combustion and subsequent damage to underlying fiberboard. Technique also applies to metal cutting in similar assemblies without disassembly to remove combustible materials from welding heat proximity.
