Ratio of 1,275 and 186 keV Gamma Ray Count Rates for Age Determination of Material in UF 6 Cylinders

In this work, a method for using ratios of passive gamma ray measurements to determine the time since the filling of UF 6 cylinders was explored. This method uses the 186 keV gamma ray emitted by 235 U and the 1,275 keV gamma ray that results from interactions of alpha particles in fluorine. Studies were made using MCNP models of both 30B cylinders and smaller 5A cylinders. Results indicate that for enrichments at or above that of natural uranium, this approach may provide a method for determining age up to 10 years or identifying whether the age is greater than 10 years, even if the uranium enrichment is unknown. The calculated results show the same behavior as the results of a recent measurement campaign, indicating the possibility of using this method for real-world cylinders.

Measurement of Local Electric Field Turbulence in Magnetically Confined Plasmas (Final Report)

This final report describes the development of high-bandwidth plasma fluctuation diagnostics, encompassing the design and implementation of Beam Emission Spectroscopy systems on several fusion experiments such as TFTR, DIII-D and NSTX, the advancement of Alpha particle and Ultrafast Charge-Exchange Recombination Spectroscopy, and the creation of advanced spectrometers for localized studies of electric and magnetic field fluctuations based on the Motional Stark Effect.

Finding Nuclear Clusters in the Short-Baseline Near Detector

Production of nuclear clusters such as deuterons, tritons, helions and alpha particles has only recently been simulated for neutrino-nucleus interactions, and has not yet been measured in neutrino experiments. The Short-Baseline Near Detector (SBND) is the first Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LArTPC) with high enough resolution and a large enough neutrino flux to accurately measure the cross-section for the production of heavier-than-proton fragments in neutrino interactions. SBND is a 112-ton LArTPC, and lies 110 m downstream from the Booster Neutrino Beam target, where it has already collected the world's largest dataset of neutrino-argon interactions. In these processes, the intranuclear cascade and nuclear de-excitation stages can both produce nuclear clusters. With LArTPC technology's excellent reconstruction capabilities and SBND's unprecedented neutrino statistics, a measurement of these nuclear clusters could distinguish between nuclear models and improve neutrino energy reconstruction. This poster presents the status of simulation, reconstruction, and prospects for a measurement of nuclear clusters in SBND.

The neutron flux in space following a polar cap neutron event on November 15, 1960

A neutron detector flown on an Atlas pod during the 15 November 1960 solar event measured a larger neutron flux than another detector flown on a similar vehicle during a quiet solar period. The excess neutron flux at low latitudes obtained by comparing these two measurements is about an order of magnitude higher than expected from the neutron production in the atmosphere by solar protons as deduced from Lingenfelter's calculations and Webber's model for the 15 November event. It is suggested that most of the discrepancy can be accounted for by considering neutron production by energetic solar alpha particles and lowered geomagnetic cutoffs.

An economical method for the continuous production of iodine-123

Simple and inexpensive method produces iodine 123, in a conventional cyclotron. Tellurium 122, a stable isotope available in enrichments exceeding 95 percent, is held on a porous metal plate by a flowing stream of helium and bombarded with either alpha particles or helium 3.
