Spin–vibronic coherence drives singlet–triplet conversion

Design-specific control over the transitions between excited electronic states with different spin multiplicities is of the utmost importance in molecular and materials chemistry. Previous studies have indicated that the combination of spin-orbit and vibronic effects, collectively termed the spin-vibronic effect, can accelerate quantum-mechanically forbidden transitions at non-adiabatic crossings. However, it has been difficult to identify precise experimental manifestations of the spin-vibronic mechanism. Here we present coherence spectroscopy experiments that reveal the interplay between the spin, electronic and vibrational degrees of freedom that drive efficient singlet-triplet conversion in four structurally related dinuclear Pt(II) metal-metal-to-ligand charge-transfer (MMLCT) complexes. Photoexcitation activates the formation of a Pt-Pt bond, launching a stretching vibrational wavepacket. The molecular-structure-dependent decoherence and recoherence dynamics of this wavepacket resolve the spin-vibronic mechanism. Further, we find that vectorial motion along the Pt-Pt stretching coordinates tunes the singlet and intermediate-state energy gap irreversibly towards the conical intersection and subsequently drives formation of the lowest stable triplet state in a ratcheting fashion. This work demonstrates the viability of using vibronic coherences as probes to clarify the interplay among spin, electronic and nuclear dynamics in spin-conversion processes, and this could inspire new modular designs to tailor the properties of excited states.

A synthesis of bacterial and archaeal phenotypic trait data

A synthesis of phenotypic and quantitative genomic traits is provided for bacteria and archaea, in the form of a scripted, reproducible workflow that standardizes and merges 26 sources. The resulting unified dataset covers 14 phenotypic traits, 5 quantitative genomic traits, and 4 environmental characteristics for approximately 170,000 strain-level and 15,000 species-aggregated records. It spans all habitats including soils, marine and fresh waters and sediments, host-associated and thermal. Trait data can find use in clarifying major dimensions of ecological strategy variation across species. They can also be used in conjunction with species and abundance sampling to characterize trait mixtures in communities and responses of traits along environmental gradients.

Characterizing uncertainty in Community Land Model version 5 hydrological applications in the United States

Abstract Land surface models such as the Community Land Model Version 5 (CLM5) are essential tools for simulating the behavior of the terrestrial system. Despite the extensive application of CLM5, limited attention has been paid to the underlying uncertainties associated with its hydrological parameters and how these uncertainties affect water resource applications. To address this long-standing issue, we use five meteorological datasets to conduct a comprehensive hydrological parameter uncertainty characterization of CLM5 over the hydroclimatic gradients of the conterminous United States. Key datasets produced from the uncertainty characterization experiment include: a benchmark dataset of CLM5 default hydrological performance, parameter sensitivities for 28 hydrological metrics, and large-ensemble outputs for CLM5 hydrological predictions. The presented datasets will assist CLM5 calibration and support broad applications, such as evaluating drought and flood vulnerabilities. The datasets can be used to identify the hydroclimatological conditions under which parametric uncertainties demonstrate substantial effects on hydrological predictions and clarify where further investigations are needed to understand how hydrological prediction uncertainties interact with other Earth system processes.

Persistent meanders and eddies lead to quasi-steady Lagrangian transport patterns in a weak western boundary current

The Brazil Current (BC) is a weak western boundary current flowing along the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean. It is frequently described as a flow with intense mesoscale activity and relatively low volume transport between 5.0 and 10.0 Sv. We use a 13-year eddy-resolving primitive-equation simulation to show that the presence of persistent meanders and eddies leads to characteristic quasi-steady Lagrangian transport patterns, aptly extracted through climatological Lagrangian Coherent Structures (cLCS). The cLCS position the surface expression of the BC core along the 2000-m isobath, in excellent visual agreement with high resolution satellite sea-surface temperature and the model Eulerian mean velocity. The cLCS deformation pattern also responds to zonally persistent cross-shelf SSH transition from positive (high) values near coastline to low (negative) values between 200- and 2000-m and back to positive (high) offshore from the 2000-m isobath. Zonally-paired cyclonic and anticyclonic structures are embedded in this transition, also causing the cLCS to deform into chevrons. An efficient transport barrier is identified close to the 200-m isobath confirmed by limited inshore movement of drogued drifters and accurately indicated by an along slope maxima of climatological strength of attraction. We also show that the persistent cyclonic and anticyclonic structures may induce localized cross-shelf transport. Regions of low climatological strength of attraction coincide with large shelves and with stagnant synthetic trajectories. We also show that cLCS accurately depict trajectories initiated at the location of Chevron’s spill (November 2011) as compared to synthetic and satellite-tracked trajectories, and the outline of the oil from that accident. There is also an agreement between the large-scale oil slicks reaching the Brazilian beaches (from August 2019 to February 2020) and the strength of climatological attraction at the coast. Our work also clarifies the influence of persistent mesoscale structures on the regional circulation. The identification and quantitative description of climatological Lagrangian coherent structures is expected to improve the effectiveness of future emergency response to oil spills, contingency planning, rescue operations, larval and fish connectivity assessment, drifter launch strategies, waste pollutant and marine debris dispersion and destination.

Omics analyses and biochemical study of Phlebiopsis gigantea elucidate its degradation strategy of wood extractives

Wood extractives, solvent-soluble fractions of woody biomass, are considered to be a factor impeding or excluding fungal colonization on the freshly harvested conifers. Among wood decay fungi, the basidiomycete Phlebiopsis gigantea has evolved a unique enzyme system to efficiently transform or degrade conifer extractives but little is known about the mechanism(s). In this study, to clarify the mechanism(s) of softwood degradation, we examined the transcriptome, proteome, and metabolome of P. gigantea when grown on defined media containing microcrystalline cellulose and pine sapwood extractives. Beyond the conventional enzymes often associated with cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin degradation, an array of enzymes implicated in the metabolism of softwood lipophilic extractives such as fatty and resin acids, steroids and glycerides was significantly up-regulated. Among these, a highly expressed and inducible lipase is likely responsible for lipophilic extractive degradation, based on its extracellular location and our characterization of the recombinant enzyme. Our results provide insight into physiological roles of extractives in the interaction between wood and fungi.

On the mechanism of performance improvement of electroactive polyvinyl chloride (PVC) gel actuators via conductive fillers

Abstract The electromechanical actuation of transparent plasticized polyvinyl chloride (PVC) gels with conductive fillers were studied. The effects of functionalized carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([Bmim]BF 4 ) ionic liquid (IL) on both the electrical conduction and dielectric processes within PVC gels were investigated, and the differences between the two were clarified. Both CNTs and IL were shown to increase the conductivity of the gels and produce larger electromechanical transduction of a contraction actuator, but only CNTs were shown to increase the electrostatic adhesion force of the PVC gels. The addition of charge carriers to the gel via the inclusion of ILs was shown to significantly reduce the conductivity relaxation time, and the transient current upon voltage polarity reversal indicated multiple peaks corresponding to the introduction of carriers with different polarities and mobilities into the gel. This is believed to cause a screening effect, reducing the charge accumulation at the anode that is the foundational basis for PVC gels’ actuation mechanism. A recommendation for preferable conductive fillers for various applications is made.

Dispersion and stability mechanism of Pt nanoparticles on transition-metal oxides

The heterogeneous catalysts of Pt/transition-metal oxides are typically synthesized through calcination at 500 °C, and Pt nanoparticles are uniformly and highly dispersed when hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) is applied before calcination. The influence of H 2 O 2 on the dispersion and the stability of Pt nanoparticles on titania-incorporated fumed silica (Pt/Ti–FS) supports was examined using X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) measurements at the Pt L 3 and Ti K edges as well as density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The local structural and chemical properties around Pt and Ti atoms of Pt/Ti–FS with and without H 2 O 2 treatment were monitored using in-situ XAFS during heating from room temperature to 500 °C. XAFS revealed that the Pt nanoparticles of H 2 O 2 -Pt/Ti–FS are highly stable and that the Ti atoms of H 2 O 2 -Pt/Ti–FS support form into a distorted-anatase TiO 2 . DFT calculations showed that Pt atoms bond more stably to oxidized–TiO 2 surfaces than they do to bare- and reduced–TiO 2 surfaces. XAFS measurements and DFT calculations clarified that the presence of extra oxygen atoms due to the H 2 O 2 treatment plays a critical role in the strong bonding of Pt atoms to TiO 2 surfaces.

Comprehensive characterization of the structure of Zr-based metallic glasses

Structure of metallic glasses fascinates as the generic amorphous structural template for ubiquitous systems. Its specification necessitates determination of the complete hierarchical structure, starting from short-range-order (SRO) → medium-range-order (MRO) → bulk structure and free volume (FV) distribution. This link has largely remained elusive since previous investigations adopted one-technique-at-a-time approach, focusing on limited aspects of any one domain. Reconstruction of structure from experimental data inversion is non-unique for many of these techniques. As a result, complete and precise structural understanding of glass has not emerged yet. In this work, we demonstrate the first experimental pathway for reconstruction of the integrated structure, for and glasses. Our strategy engages diverse (×7) multi-scale techniques [XAFS, 3D-APT, ABED/NBED, FEM, XRD, PAS, FHREM] on the same glass. This strategy complemented mutual limitations of techniques and corroborated common parameters to generate complete, self-consistent and precise parameters. Further, MRO domain size and inter-void separation were correlated to identify the presence of FV at MRO boundaries. This enabled the first experimental reconstruction of hierarchical subset: SRO → MRO → FV → bulk structure. The first ever image of intermediate region between MRO domains emerged from this link. We clarify that determination of all subsets is not our objective; the essence and novelty of this work lies in directing the pathway towards finite solution, in the most logical and unambiguous way.

Causal machine learning uncovers conditions for convective intensification driven by organic and sulfate aerosols

Aerosols are often hypothesized to invigorate deep convective clouds (DCCs), but observational evidence remains limited and inconclusive. Clarifying this hypothesis is critical for regions vulnerable to thunderstorms and flooding, particularly highly polluted coastal cities. Leveraging a novel causal discovery–inference pipeline and high-resolution observations near Houston, TX, we identify multiple causal pathways among aerosols (mostly organic and sulfate), DCCs, and meteorological factors. However, a direct causal link from aerosols to DCCs is found to be uncommon, occurring in less than 35% of analyzed scenarios, and is characterized by strong conditionality and nonlinearity. When aerosol impacts on DCCs do occur, they can be substantial, enhancing DCC core heights by approximately 1.7 km, with 92% of this effect concentrated in warmer-phase cloud regions. Notably, the presence of sea breezes and the inclusion of all measured aerosol particles each enhance DCCs in over 95% of aerosol-sensitive cases.

Dynamics of the water-plasma interface in various discharge modes of atmospheric-pressure plasmas

This paper presents an experimental study of the dynamics of the water-plasma interface during the interaction high-voltage (HV) atmospheric pressure discharge with the water surface. Under the influence of the voltage applied to the pin type electrode, discharges are formed at the air layer between the sharp-tip HV electrode and deionized water. Three discharge regimes were identified from synchronized electrical waveforms and imaging: (i) a weak linear regime at 3–10.6 kV, (ii) a branching streamer regime at the maximum applied voltage of 12.6 kV, and (iii) a continuous arc-like regime occurring during the transition to lower voltage and higher current (e.g., U ≈ 3.2 kV, I ≈ 4.07 mA). High-speed shadowgraph images showed a symmetric interfacial cavity whose depth increased nonlinearly with voltage from h 0 ≈ 0.1 mm at 3 kV to h 0 ≈ 2.7 mm at 10.6 kV, reaching a maximum depth of h 0 ≈ 5.9 mm at 12.6 kV, while the cavity disappeared in the continuous-channel regime and was replaced by outward-propagating wave-like motion. The deformation of the water surface during the discharge-water interaction is governed by the balance between electric field forces, surface tension, gravitational forces, and electrohydrodynamic forces, whose relative contributions vary with the applied voltage. This effect was explained by quantitatively estimating the magnitudes of the acting forces and establishing the force balance. Optical emission spectroscopy in the continuous-channel regime indicated air plasma signatures and yielded a gas temperature of approximately 400 K, while prolonged operation (≈ 20 min) increased the water temperature to ~ 70 °C, reduced the water-layer thickness from 6 mm to 3 mm, and decreased pH from 7 to 4. These regime-resolved, quantitative results clarify how the dominant interfacial forcing shifts with discharge mode and provide a mechanistic basis for controlling plasma-water interactions in atmospheric-pressure applications.

Sea ice and atmospheric circulation shape the high-latitude lapse rate feedback

Abstract Arctic amplification of anthropogenic climate change is widely attributed to the sea-ice albedo feedback, with its attendant increase in absorbed solar radiation, and to the effect of the vertical structure of atmospheric warming on Earth’s outgoing longwave radiation. The latter lapse rate feedback is subject, at high latitudes, to a myriad of local and remote influences whose relative contributions remain unquantified. The distinct controls on the high-latitude lapse rate feedback are here partitioned into “upper” and “lower” contributions originating above and below a characteristic climatological isentropic surface that separates the high-latitude lower troposphere from the rest of the atmosphere. This decomposition clarifies how the positive high-latitude lapse rate feedback over polar oceans arises primarily as an atmospheric response to local sea ice loss and is reduced in subpolar latitudes by an increase in poleward atmospheric energy transport. The separation of the locally driven component of the high-latitude lapse rate feedback further reveals how it and the sea-ice albedo feedback together dominate Arctic amplification as a coupled mechanism operating across the seasonal cycle.

Incorrect computation of Madden-Julian oscillation prediction skill

The Madden–Julian oscillation (MJO) is a major tropical weather system and one of the largest sources of predictability for subseasonal-to-seasonal weather forecasts. Skillful prediction of the MJO has been a highly active area of research due to its large socio-economic impacts. Silini et al., herein S21, developed a machine learning model to predict the MJO, which they claimed to have an MJO prediction skill of 26–27 days over all seasons and 45 days for December–February (DJF) winter. If true, this would make the skill of their model competitive with that of the state-of-the-art dynamical MJO prediction systems at 20–35 days. However, here we show that the MJO prediction was calculated incorrectly in S21, which spuriously increased the performance of their model. Correctly computed skill of their model was substantially lower than that reported in S21; the skill for all seasons drops to 11–12 days and the skill for forecasts initialized during DJF drops to 15 days. Our findings clarify that the S21 machine learning model is not competitive with state-of-the-art numerical weather prediction models in predicting the MJO.

Model-observation discrepancies in Arctic moisture intrusions: causes and pathways for improved simulation

Arctic moisture intrusions (MIs), narrow filaments of strong moisture transport, are key drivers of poleward moisture flux and Arctic weather extremes, yet their representation in climate models is poorly understood. Using a new Arctic MI detection algorithm, we document persistent biases across three CMIP generations (CMIP3–CMIP6): models overestimate MI occurrence over the Pacific sector and underestimate it over the Atlantic sector. These errors stem from misrepresented midlatitude westerly jets, with an equatorward North Atlantic jet associated with too few Atlantic MIs, and a poleward, weakened North Pacific jet linked to too many Pacific MIs. Experiments that correct sea surface temperature and sea ice concentration biases and increase atmospheric resolution improve jet structure and MI statistics, while a cloud-locking simulation indicates that better high-frequency cloud–radiation–circulation interactions can yield further gains. Our results clarify pathways to reducing long-standing MI and jet biases, providing guidance for improving simulations of Arctic and midlatitude climate.

Deciphering the transcriptional regulation of the catabolism of lignin-derived aromatics in Rhodococcus opacus PD630

Abstract Rhodococcus opacus PD630 has considerable potential as a platform for valorizing lignin due to its innate “biological funneling” pathways. However, the transcriptional regulation of the aromatic catabolic pathways and the mechanisms controlling aromatic catabolic operons in response to different aromatic mixtures are still underexplored. Here, we identified and studied the transcription factors for aromatic degradation using GFP-based sensors and comprehensive deletion analyses. Our results demonstrate that the funneling pathways for phenol, guaiacol, 4-hydroxybenzoate, and vanillate are controlled by transcriptional activators. The two different branches of the β-ketoadipate pathway, however, are controlled by transcriptional repressors. Additionally, promoter activity assays revealed that the substrate hierarchy in R. opacus may be ascribed to the transcriptional cross-regulation of the individual aromatic funneling pathways. These results provide clues to clarify the molecule-level mechanisms underlying the complex regulation of aromatic catabolism, which facilitates the development of R. opacus as a promising chassis for valorizing lignin.

Personalized whole-brain neural mass models reveal combined Aβ and tau hyperexcitable influences in Alzheimer's disease.

Neuronal dysfunction and cognitive deterioration in Alzheimer's disease (AD) are likely caused by multiple pathophysiological factors. However, mechanistic evidence in humans remains scarce, requiring improved non-invasive techniques and integrative models. We introduce personalized AD computational models built on whole-brain Wilson-Cowan oscillators and incorporating resting-state functional MRI, amyloid-β (Aβ) and tau-PET from 132 individuals in the AD spectrum to evaluate the direct impact of toxic protein deposition on neuronal activity. This subject-specific approach uncovers key patho-mechanistic interactions, including synergistic Aβ and tau effects on cognitive impairment and neuronal excitability increases with disease progression. The data-derived neuronal excitability values strongly predict clinically relevant AD plasma biomarker concentrations (p-tau217, p-tau231, p-tau181, GFAP) and grey matter atrophy obtained through voxel-based morphometry. Furthermore, reconstructed EEG proxy quantities show the hallmark AD electrophysiological alterations (theta band activity enhancement and alpha reductions) which occur with Aβ-positivity and after limbic tau involvement. Microglial activation influences on neuronal activity are less definitive, potentially due to neuroimaging limitations in mapping neuroprotective vs detrimental activation phenotypes. Mechanistic brain activity models can further clarify intricate neurodegenerative processes and accelerate preventive/treatment interventions.

Exploring nonequilibrium phases of photo-doped Mott insulators with generalized Gibbs ensembles

Many experiments show that strong excitations of correlated quantum materials can cause non-thermal phases without equilibrium analogues. Understanding the origin and properties of these nonequilibrium states has been challenging due to the limitations of theoretical methods for nonequilibrium strongly correlated systems. In this work, we introduce a generalized Gibbs ensemble description that enables a systematic analysis of the long-time behavior of photo-doped states in Mott insulators based on equilibrium methods. We demonstrate the power of the method by mapping out the nonequilibrium phase diagram of the one-dimensional extended Hubbard model, which features η -pairing and charge density wave phases in a wide photo-doping range. We furthermore clarify that the peculiar kinematics of photo-doped carriers, and the interaction between them, play an essential role in the formation of these non-thermal phases. Our results establish a new path for the systematic analysis of nonequilibrium strongly correlated systems.

Orbital selective band re-normalization induced Lifshitz transition in TiSe 2

A Lifshitz transition is a sudden change in Fermi surface topology, often linked to quantum phenomena, with major impact on transport and sometimes superconductivity. Here we demonstrate a Lifshitz transition in TiSe 2 using micro–angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. At low temperatures an electron pocket appears at the Brillouin-zone center, whereas at higher temperatures spectral weight from a hole-like valence band dominates the Fermi level. Unlike previously reported cases typically driven by rigid band shifts, in TiSe 2 an orbital-selective strong band renormalization induces the crossover near 160 K. This mechanism naturally explains the longstanding resistivity anomaly of TiSe 2 , which peaks around 160 K. Our results clarify its puzzling transport behavior and open avenues to investigate how periodic lattice distortions interact with strong electronic correlations.

Morphine and high-fat diet differentially alter the gut microbiota composition and metabolic function in lean versus obese mice

There are known associations between opioids, obesity, and the gut microbiome, but the molecular connection/mediation of these relationships is not understood. To better clarify the interplay of physiological, genetic, and microbial factors, this study investigated the microbiome and host inflammatory responses to chronic opioid administration in genetically obese, diet-induced obese, and lean mice. Samples of feces, urine, colon tissue, and plasma were analyzed using targeted LC-MS/MS quantification of metabolites, immunoassays of inflammatory cytokine levels, genome-resolved metagenomics, and metaproteomics. Genetic obesity, diet-induced obesity, and morphine treatment in lean mice each showed increases in distinct inflammatory cytokines. Metagenomic assembly and binning uncovered over 400 novel gut bacterial genomes and species. Morphine administration impacted the microbiome’s composition and function, with the strongest effect observed in lean mice. This microbiome effect was less pronounced than either diet or genetically driven obesity. Based on inferred microbial physiology from the metaproteome datasets, a high-fat diet transitioned constituent microbes away from harvesting diet-derived nutrients and towards nutrients present in the host mucosal layer. Considered together, these results identified novel host-dependent phenotypes, differentiated the effects of genetic obesity versus diet induced obesity on gut microbiome composition and function, and showed that chronic morphine administration altered the gut microbiome.
