Tutorial for Non-Orthogonal Configuration Interaction Fragment Studies Using GronOR

A brief tutorial is presented for the GronOR non-orthogonal configuration interaction application illustrating the download and build process, setting up calculations with OpenMolcas and GronOR, and a description of the file structure and input options. An overview of the computational workflow includes the generation of fragment wave functions and integrals with an adapted version of OpenMolcas, running GronOR calculations, and accounting for dynamic correlation corrections. Three end-to-end use cases are provided, representing a molecular dimer, an ion pair, and overlapping molecular fragments.

Non-Orthogonal Configuration Interaction for Fragments

An overview is given of the non-orthogonal configuration interaction (NOCI) implementation in the open-source program GronOR. After pointing out the specifics of NOCI and its extension to ensembles of molecules NOCI-Fragments (NOCI-F), the theoretical foundations of the approaches are described. The introduction of a common molecular orbital basis, the selection of the most contributing determinants pairs, and a massively parallel and GPU-accelerated implementation have made possible the application of NOCI to medium-sized systems as illustrated in a short overview of some of the recent applications.

PERLE: A novel facility for ERL development and applications in multi-turn configuration and high-power regime

The development of ERLs has been recognized as one of the five main pillars of accelerators R&D in support of the European Strategy for Particle Physics (ESPP). The international panel in charge of the ERL Roadmap definition recognized PERLE project as “a central part of the roadmap for the development of energy-recovery linacs”, with milestones to be achieved by the next ESPP in 2026. PERLE project is aiming at the construction of a novel ERL facility for the development and application of the energy recovery technique in multi-turn configuration, high current and large energy regime. It will operate in a 3-turns mode, first at 250 MeV, then upgraded to 500 MeV with 20mA beam current. Such challenging parameters make PERLE a unique multi-turn ERL facility operating at an unexplored operational power regime (10MW), studying and validating a broad range of accelerator phenomena, paving the way for the future larger scale ERLs. PERLE will be the necessary demonstrator for the future HEP machine (LHeC / FCC-eh), with which it shares the same technological choices and beam parameters. Furthermore, PERLE opens a new frontier for the physics of “the electromagnetic probe”. It will be the first ERL dedicated to Nuclear Physics for studying the eN interaction with radioactive nuclei. Here we will report on the project status, introduce the main ongoing achievements and describe the staged strategy we will adopt toward the construction of PERLE machine at its nominal performances.

Software and Firmware-logic Design for the PIP-II Machine Protection System Mode and Configuration Control at Fermilab

The PIP-II Machine Protection System (MPS) requires a dedicated set of tools for configuration control and management of the machine modes and beam modes of the accelerator. The protection system reacts to signals from various elements of the machine according to rules established in a setup database in the form of a Look-Up-Table filtered by the program Mode Controller. This is achieved in accordance with commands from the operator and governed by the firmware logic of the MPS. This paper describes the architecture, firmware logic, and implementation of the program mode controller.

Characterization of Flashback and Flame-Holding in a Jet-in-Crossflow Mixing Configuration with Methane-Hydrogen Fuel Blends

An approach that combines experimental and numerical analyses has been implemented to characterize the fundamentals of flashback events and flame-holding phenomena during high-hydrogen combustion in a jet-in-crossflow (JICF) configuration. Such flame dynamics are visualized experimentally using nanosecond (ns)-based hydroxyl planar laser-induced fluorescence (OH-PLIF) and chemiluminescence diagnostics techniques. The JICF burner has an optically accessible pre-mixing tube allowing the optical diagnostics. The testing was conducted for varied pre-mixer velocities (V) and equivalence ratio (ϕ) for 90%-100% (H2, by mole) H2/CH4 reactant mixtures at atmospheric temperature and pressure conditions. Two distinct flashback events were identified – conventional rich flashback and lean flashback, recorded while increasing ϕ and decreasing ϕ, respectively. The cause of lean flashback was attributed to the lower momentum flux ratio which bends the jet sharply, closer toward the injection plane. The mean OH-PLIF images characterized the flame-holding behavior where the flame was found to be stabilized on the leeward side only or on both windward and leeward sides as a lifted flame near the fuel port. A Large Eddy Simulation (LES) with detailed chemistry combustion modeling approach was implemented along an OH* sub-mechanism, and it showed qualitative agreement with the integrated line-of-sight chemiluminescence results as well as the planar OH-PLIF measurements.

Enhancing New Physics Searches with a Future Beam Dump Configuration at SBND

Accelerator-based neutrino experiments, especially those with high-intensity beams and highly capable detectors, offer a powerful and complementary method for probing new physics scenarios. The MiniBooNE experiment at Fermilab pioneered a special Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB) beam dump run and set new limits on sub-GeV dark matter. This white paper explores the physics opportunities enabled by operating the Short-Baseline Near Detector (SBND) at Fermilab in a future BNB beam dump configuration. Redirecting the proton beam away from the default target suppresses neutrino backgrounds, enabling SBND to significantly enhance sensitivity to many new physics scenarios. We evaluate two operational scenarios – off-target mode and a new dedicated beam dump mode – and demonstrate that both approaches can open new avenues in the search for physics beyond the Standard Model. We present two example cases, scalar dark matter and heavy neutral leptons via axion-like particle.

Such flame dynamics are visualized experimentally using nanosecond (ns)-based hydroxyl planar laser-induced fluorescence (OH-PLIF) and chemiluminescence (CL) diagnostics techniques. Two distinct flashbacks were identified – conventional rich flashback and lean flashback, recorded while increasing ϕ and decreasing ϕ, respectively. The cause of lean flashback was attributed to lower flux ratio which bends the jet sharply, closer toward the injection plane. The flashback was found to occur along the boundary layer, assisted by the inner wall of the pre-mixer tube. The mean OH-PLIF images characterized the flame-holding behavior where the flame was found to be stabilized on the leeward side only or on both windward and leeward sides as a lifted flame near the fuel port.

Scaling-up up-flow microbial electrolysis cells with a compact electrode configuration for continuous hydrogen production

Maintaining high current densities is a key challenge in scaling-up microbial electrolysis cell (MEC) reactors. In this study, a novel 10 L MEC reactor with a total electrode surface area > 1 m 2 was designed and evaluated to maximize the current density and H 2 recovery. Performances of the reactor suggest that the longitudinal structure with parallel vertical orientation of the electrodes encouraged high fluid mixing and the sheet metal electrode frames provided distributed electrical connection. Results also demonstrated that the electrode pairs located next to reactor walls decreased current density, as did separating the electrodes with separators. High volumetric H 2 production rate of 5.9 L/L/d was achieved at a volumetric current density of 970 A/m 3 (34 A/m 2 ). Furthermore, the observed current densities of the large reactor were accurately predicted based on the internal resistance analysis of small scale MECs (0.15 L), demonstrating the scalability of the single chamber MEC design.

Synthesis of aviation biofuel precursors from biomass-derived ketones: Substrate adsorption configuration-catalytic activity

The production of aviation biofuel precursors from biomass-derived ketones by heterogeneous catalysis has been hindered by the low catalytic activity. Herein, a series of Cu-doped metal oxide catalysts were prepared for the conversion of biomass-derived ketones to aviation biofuel precursors. Solvent-free cyclopentanone conversion via aldol condensation reached 91.1 % over Cu/Al 2 O 3 with 100 % selectivity toward dimer and trimer oxygenated species, all of which are aviation biofuel precursors. This catalyst primarily contains Cu 2 O and Cu nanoparticles which are uniformly dispersed across the Al 2 O 3 surface. From in situ DRIFTS and DFT results, the incorporation of Cu species onto Al 2 O 3 not only increased the diversity of Lewis acidic sites, but also changed the adsorption of C = O groups, which lead to the increased aldol condensation activity of Cu/Al 2 O 3 . In conclusion, this study provides insight on the design of heterogeneous catalysts suitable for the solvent-free synthesis of aviation biofuel precursors from biomass-derived ketones.

Hybrid eigensolvers for nuclear configuration interaction calculations

We examine and compare several iterative methods for solving large-scale eigenvalue problems arising from nuclear structure calculations. In particular, we discuss the possibility of using block Lanczos method, a Chebyshev filtering based subspace iterations and the residual minimization method accelerated by direct inversion of iterative subspace (RMM-DIIS) and describe how these algorithms compare with the standard Lanczos algorithm and the locally optimal block preconditioned conjugate gradient (LOBPCG) algorithm. Although the RMM-DIIS method does not exhibit rapid convergence when the initial approximations to the desired eigenvectors are not sufficiently accurate, it can be effectively combined with either the block Lanczos or the LOBPCG method to yield a hybrid eigensolver that has several desirable properties. We will describe a few practical issues that need to be addressed to make the hybrid solver efficient and robust.
