Effect of combined pressure and temperature distortion orientation on high-bypass-ratio turbofan engine stability

Total-temperature, static-pressure and total-pressure distributions were measured in the inlet duct upstream of the engine inlet and within the fan and compressor of a YTF34 turbofan engine. Free-stream and boundary layer yaw angle variations were measured between a rotable screen assembly and the engine inlet. Total pressure distortions were generated using three 180 deg extent screens and total temperature distortions were generated using a rotatable hydrogen burner. Reynolds number index upstream of the rotatable screen assembly was maintained at 0.5 (based on the undistorted sectors at station 1, the inlet flow measuring station). The engine mechanical fan speed at sea level condition was rated at 7005 rpm. The engine was tested at a corrected fan speed of 90 percent of rated condition. Yaw angle increased between the rotatable screen assembly and the engine inlet. The largest variation in free-stream and boundary layer yaw angle occurs when the combined distortions are 180 deg out-of-phase. Static-pressure distortion increased exponentially as flow approached the engine. Total-pressure distortions were attenuated between the engine inlet and the compressor exit. Total-temperature distortion persisted through the compressor for all four combined distortions investigated.

Performance analysis of the DSN baseband assembly (Bba) Real-Time Combiner (RTC)

The operation of the BBA Real Time Combiner (RTC) is discussed and its performance investigated in detail. It is shown that each channel of the RTC can be modelled by a simple block diagram in the z-transform domain from which all pertinent transient and steady state behavioral characteristics can be determined. In particular, the characteristic equation of the tracking loop and its equivalent noise bandwidth are found and used to evaluate the closed loop transient response and steady-state mean squared timing jitter. The impact of the totality of these loop jitter contributions on the combiner output SNR is evaluated and illustrated numerically. These results show that for parameters of interest to various space missions, the RTC is capable of providing significant SNR improvement relative to a single receiving antenna.

Starvation effects on the hydrodynamic lubrication of rigid nonconformal contacts in combined rolling and normal motion

The effect of inlet starvation on the hydrodynamic lubrication of lightly loaded rigid nonconformal contacts in combined rolling and normal motion is determined through a numerical solution of the Reynolds' equation for an isoviscous, incompressible lubricant. Starvation is effected by systematically reducing the fluid inlet level. The pressures are taken to be ambient at the inlet meniscus boundary and Reynolds' boundary condition is applied for film rupture in the exit region. Results are presented for the dynamic performance of the starved contacts in combined rolling and normal motion for both normal approach and separation. During normal approach the dynamic load ratio (i.e. ratio of dynamic to steady state load capacity) increases considerably with increase in the inlet starvation. The effect of starvation on the dynamic peak pressure ratio is relatively small. Further, it has been observed that with increasing starvation, film thickness effects become significant in the dynamic behavior of the nonconformal contacts. For significantly starved contacts the dynamic load ratio increases with increase in film thickness during normal approach and a similar reduction is observed during separation. A similar effect is noted for the dynamic peak pressure ratio.

Intercontinental antenna arraying by symbol stream combining at ICE Giacobini-Zinner encounter

Deep space tracking stations on different continents were arrayed during the encounter of the International Cometary Explorer (ICE) spacecraft with the comet Giacobini-Zinner during September 9 through 12, 1985. This is the first time that telemetry signals received on different continents have been combined to enhance signal to noise ratio. The arraying was done in non-real time using the method of symbol stream combining. The improvement in signal to noise ratio was typically 2 dB over the stronger of the two stations in each array.

Real-time combiner loss

Telemetry signals from several channels are aligned in time and combined by the Real-Time Combiner (RTC) in order to increase the strength of the total signal. In this article, the impact of the timing jitter in the RTC on the bit/symbol error rate is investigated. Equations are derived for the timing jitter loss associated with the coded and uncoded channels. Included are curves that depict the bit-symbol error rate vs. E sub b/N sub 0 and E sub s/N sub 0 for some typical telemetry conditions. The losses are typically below 0.1 dB.

Decoupled dynamic analysis of combined systems by iterative determination of interface accelerations

A dynamic analysis technique is presented that can be used to determine the response of a discrete model of a large linear structural system composed of multiple substructures. The technique circumvents the costly computation of the modal characteristics of the combined system. This is accomplished by relying on a predictor-corrector scheme to converge iteratively to the interface accelerations of the combined system, while the equations of motions of the individual structures are integrated separately. In this regard, the temporal slopes of the interface accelerations (jerks) are computed at each time point of integration to predict the interface accelerations at the next time point. The proposed technique is exemplified by conducting a Space Shuttle landing loads analysis; the obtained numerical data demonstrate its reliability and efficiency.

A combined Eulerian-Lagrangian analysis for computation of two-phase flows

A combined Eulerian-Lagrangian analysis, which combines a linearized block implicit Navier-Stokes analysis for the continuous phase with a Lagrangian analysis for the motion of the droplet phase to simulate evaporating two-phase flows, has been developed. A unique aspect of this analysis is that the Lagrangian equations for the droplet motion have been transformed into the Eulerian computational space using coordinate transformation resulting in better computational efficiency. Use of the present implicit procedure for the continuous phase makes it possible to efficiently use a locally highly refined mesh. The coupling of the continuous phase and the droplet phase analyses is such that it allows the use of convergence acceleration techniques for steady-state problems, as well as making it possible to simulate transient flows. A rapidly evaporating two-phase flow caused by spray of liquid nitrogen in gaseous nitrogen has been used as a test problem to demonstrate the computer code using this analysis.

Errors in plate rotations as described by covariance matrices and their combination in reconstructions

The use of covariance matrices to describe the errors in plate rotations and to combine the contributions of individual plate pairs for plate reconstructions is discussed. Particular attention is given to finite rotations and the combination of covariance matrices for a circuit of successive plate pair rotations. Examples of errors in plate reconstructions in which the position of the Pacific plate relative to North America is reconstructed are presented.

NASA combined file postings statistics based on NASA thesaurus, Jan. 1968 - July 1988

The NASA Combined File Postings Statistics is published semiannually (January and July). This alphabetical listing of postable subject terms contained in the NASA Thesaurus is used to display the numbers of postings (documents) indexed by each subject term from 1968 to date. The postings total per term are separated by announcement or other media into STAR, IAA, NLN, and OTHER columnar entries covering the NASA document collection (1968 to date). Nearly 594,000 book postings for NALNET Books held by NASA libraries are now included under the NLN column. CSTAR postings as well as some previously unreported series are now listed under the other column. File postings statistics for the Alternate Data Base covering the NASA collection from 1962 through 1967 were published on a one-time basis in September 1975. Subject terms for the Alternate Data Base are derived from the Subject Authority List, reprinted in 1985, which is available on request. The distribution of 16,919,195 postings among the 17,105 Thesaurus terms is tabulated on the last page of Combined File Postings Statistics.

Inflight combined vertical and lateral space vehicular accelerations - Human tolerances

Human tolerance studies related to inflight rolling (tumbling) accelerations are discussed, with emphasis on the need to provide data on combinations of Gy, as experienced during an anomalous roll aboard Gemini VIII during which upper body (-) Gz forces and lower body (+) Gz forces were experienced. The study also points to the need to provide data on tolerances to (+) or (-) Gy combined with (-) Gz, in addition to the lowered tolerances to Gy and Gz accelerations experienced by those adapted to microgravity. It is noted that such data can be used to establish limits on spacecraft acceleration maneuvering specifications.

Combination probe for hi-frequency unsteady aerodynamic measurements

A combination probe for time-resolved measurements of unsteady compressible flows in transonic wind tunnels is described. The probe measures stagnation (total) temperature and pressure, static pressure, and flow angles in two planes. From these, the fluctuating mass flux, Mach number, and velocity as well as their components in three directions can be deduced. The combination probe consists of a dual hot-wire aspirating temperature and pressure probe mounted piggyback with a high-frequency angle probe. The angle probe has four surface-mounted silicon pressure sensors. A scheme is described for retrieving from the four pressure signals the stagnation and static pressures, Mach number, and flow angles in two planes. The calibrations forming the base for this procedure, obtained from steady-state tests, are given. Typical data obtained in the Karman vortex street shed from a cylinder and at the exit of a Mach 0.4 air jet are presented.
