The effects of spatially displaced visual feedback on remote manipulator performance

The effects of spatially displaced visual feedback on the operation of a camera viewed remote manipulation task are analyzed. A remote manipulation task is performed by operators exposed to the following different viewing conditions: direct view of the work site; normal camera view; reversed camera view; inverted/reversed camera view; and inverted camera view. The task completion performance times are statistically analyzed with a repeated measures analysis of variance, and a Newman-Keuls pairwise comparison test is administered to the data. The reversed camera view is ranked third out of four camera viewing conditions, while the normal viewing condition is found significantly slower than the direct viewing condition. It is shown that generalization to remote manipulation applications based upon the results of direct manipulation studies are quite useful, but they should be made cautiously.

Particle image velocimetry for the surface tension driven convection experiment using a particle displacement tracking technique

The Surface Tension Driven Convection Experiment (STDCE) is a Space Transportation System flight experiment to study both transient and steady thermocapillary fluid flows aboard the USML-1 Spacelab mission planned for 1992. One of the components of data collected during the experiment is a video record of the flow field. This qualitative data is then quantified using an all electronic, two-dimensional particle image velocimetry technique called particle displacement tracking (PDT) which uses a simple space domain particle tracking algorithm. The PDT system is successful in producing velocity vector fields from the raw video data. Application of the PDT technique to a sample data set yielded 1606 vectors in 30 seconds of processing time. A bottom viewing optical arrangement is used to image the illuminated plane, which causes keystone distortion in the final recorded image. A coordinate transformation was incorporated into the system software to correct this viewing angle distortion. PDT processing produced 1.8 percent false identifications, due to random particle locations. A highly successful routine for removing the false identifications was also incorporated, reducing the number of false identifications to 0.2 percent.

Particle displacement tracking applied to air flows

Electronic Particle Image Velocimeter (PIV) techniques offer many advantages over conventional photographic PIV methods such as fast turn around times and simplified data reduction. A new all electronic PIV technique was developed which can measure high speed gas velocities. The Particle Displacement Tracking (PDT) technique employs a single cw laser, small seed particles (1 micron), and a single intensified, gated CCD array frame camera to provide a simple and fast method of obtaining two-dimensional velocity vector maps with unambiguous direction determination. Use of a single CCD camera eliminates registration difficulties encountered when multiple cameras are used to obtain velocity magnitude and direction information. An 80386 PC equipped with a large memory buffer frame-grabber board provides all of the data acquisition and data reduction operations. No array processors of other numerical processing hardware are required. Full video resolution (640x480 pixel) is maintained in the acquired images, providing high resolution video frames of the recorded particle images. The time between data acquisition to display of the velocity vector map is less than 40 sec. The new electronic PDT technique is demonstrated on an air nozzle flow with velocities less than 150 m/s.

Systematic displacements between gas and dust in the sunward fans of two low-activity comets

The unusual displacements between the radical emission-line gas and the scattered-light dust continuum of IRAS-Araki-Alcock (1983 VII) and P/Tempel 2 (1988 IXV) are presented. Two-dimensional spectral images were flattened by dome flats and twilight skyflats, and the actual sky subtraction was obtained by sequentially observing clear patches of sky before and after the cometary integrations. A set of slight distributions were obtained along the solar radius vector through the 'optocenter' toward the antisolar direction. Spectral-spatial cross cuts are illustrated, and the continuum and the emission-line regions in the panels are shown. The continuum of IRAS-Araki-Alcock is found to be much stronger than the cometary comae emissions near the nucleus. For the spectra of the relatively faint Comet P/Tempel 2, both dust and gas emission are weaker, and some 'derivatives' remain.

X ray based displacement measurement for hostile environments

A new method on noncontacting, high temperature extensometry based on the focus and scanning of x rays is currently under development and shows great promise of overcoming limitations associated with available techniques. The chief advantage is the ability to make undisturbed measurements through stratified or flowing gases, smoke, and flame. The system is based on the ability to focus and scan low energy, hard x rays such as those emanating from copper or molybdenum sources. The x rays are focused into a narrow and intense line image which can be scanned onto targets that fluoresce secondary x ray radiation. The final goal of the system is the ability to conduct macroscopic strain measurements in hostile environments by utilizing two or more fluorescing targets. Current work is limited to displacement measurement of a single target with a resolution of 1.25 micro-m and a target temperature of 1200 C, directly through an open flame. The main advantage of the technique lies in the penetrating nature of x rays which are not affected by the presence of refracting gas layers, smoke, flame, or intense thermal radiation, all of which could render conventional extensometry methods inoperative or greatly compromise their performance.

Polyimidazoles via aromatic nucleophilic displacement

Polyimidazoles (PI) are prepared by the aromatic nucleophilic displacement reaction of di(hydroxyphenyl) imidazole monomers with activated aromatic dihalides or activated aromatic dinitro compounds. The reactions are carried out in polar aprotic solvents such as N,N-dimethyl acetamide, sulfolane, N-methylpyrrolidinone, dimethylsulfoxide, or diphenylsulfone using alkali metal bases such as potassium carbonate at elevated temperatures under nitrogen. The di(hydroxyphenyl) imidazole monomers are prepared by reacting an aromatic aldehyde with a dimethoxybenzil or by reacting an aromatic dialdehyde with a methoxybenzil in the presence of ammonium acetate. The di(methoxyphenyl) imidazole is subsequently treated with aqueous hydrobromic acid to give the di(hydroxphenyl) imidazole monomer. This synthetic route has provided high molecular weight PI of new chemical structure, is economically and synthetically more favorable than other routes, and allows for facile chemical structure variation due to the availability of a large variety of activated aromatic dihalides and dinitro compounds.

Poly(1,3,4-oxadiazoles) via aromatic nucleophilic displacement

Poly(1,3,4-oxadiazoles) (POX) are prepared by the aromatic nucleophilic displacement reaction of di(hydroxyphenyl) 1,3,4-oxadiazole monomers with activated aromatic dihalides or activated aromatic dinitro compounds. The polymerizations are carried out in polar aprotic solvents such as sulfolane or diphenylsulfone using alkali metal bases such as potassium carbonate at elevated temperatures under nitrogen. The di(hydroxyphenyl) 1,3,4-oxadiazole monomers are synthesized by reacting 4-hydroxybenzoic hydrazide with phenyl 4-hydrobenzoate in the melt and also by reacting aromatic dihydrazides with two moles of phenyl 4-hydroxybenzoate in the melt. This synthetic route has provided high molecular weight POX of new chemical structure, is economically and synthetically more favorable than other routes, and allows for facile chemical structure variation due to the large variety of activated aromatic dihalides which are available.

Novel infrared detector based on a tunneling displacement transducer

The paper describes the design, fabrication, and characteristics of a novel infrared detector based on the principle of Golay's (1947) pneumatic infrared detector, which uses the expansion of a gas to detect infrared radiation. The present detector is constructed entirely from micromachined silicon and uses an electron tunneling displacement transducer for the detection of gas expansion. The sensitivity of the new detector is competitive with the best commercial pyroelectric sensors and can be readily improved by an order of magnitude through the use of an optimized transducer.

Dynamics and control of a large displacement suspension system for ground testing of flexible space structures

As the development in flexible space structures expands, the need for an efficient and accurate suspension system for ground tests increases accordingly. In this article, a disk suspension system was developed. Analytical results describing the dynamics of a passive and active suspension system were generated given realistic parameters of the system. These results for the passive case, were then compared with the data obtained from an experimental model with initial displacement and random forcing inputs. The dynamics of the system was analyzed. Results show that the experimental model resembles closely the analytical model and therefore strongly suggests feasibility of such a suspension system.

Measurement of subresolution terrain displacements using SPOT panchromatic imagery

It is shown that satellite-derived imagery can be used to measure subresolution horizontal terrain displacements associated with present-day earthquakes, sand dune migration, glacial motion, coastal sediment transport, and pre-eruptive volcanic processes. This use of these data allows the detection of change and the determination of rates of many environmental processes worldwide. The premise of the method is that areally extensive, subresolution spatial differences in ground patterns between images acquired at different times can be accurately measured to high precision and can be distinguished from systematic image differences, such as those due to sensing-system attitude variations. Thus far, a preliminary algorithm has been tested that shows that the approach is reasonable.

Poly(1,2,4-Triazoles) Via Aromatic Nucleophilic Displacement

Synthesis involves nucleophilic displacement of monomers with activated aromatic dihalides. Polymers exhibited desirable physical and thermal properties. Synthesis of polymers provides high-molecular-weight PT of new chemical structures, potentially more economically favorable than other routes, and, because of availability of large variety of activated aromatic dihalides, provides for facile variation of chemical structure. Useful for producing films, moldings, adhesives, and composites.

Practical limits to the performance of magnetic bearings: Peak force, slew rate, and displacement sensitivity

Magnetic bearings are subject to performance limits which are quite different from those of conventional bearings. These are due in part to the inherent nonlinearity of the device and in part to its electrical nature. Three important nonideal behaviors are presented: peak force capacity, force slew rate limitation, and sensitivity to rotor motion at large displacements. The problem of identifying the dynamic requirements of a magnetic bearing when used to support a known structure subject to known loads is discussed in the context of these limitations. Several simple design tools result from this investigation.

Distributed parameter estimation for NASA Mini-Mast truss through displacement measurements

Most methods of system identification of large flexible structures by far are based on the lumped parameter approach. Because of the considerable computational burden due to the large number of unknown parameters, distributed parameter approach, which greatly decreases the number of unknowns, has being investigated. In this paper a distributed parameter model for the estimation of modal characteristics of NASA Mini-Mast truss has been formulated. Both Bernoulli-Euler beam and Timoshenko beam equations are used to characterize the lateral bending vibrations of the truss. The measurement of the lateral displacement at the tip of the truss is provided to the maximum likelihood estimator. Closed-form solutions of the partial differential equations and closed-form expressions of the sensitivity functions are derived so that the estimation algorithm is highly efficient. The resulting estimates from test data by using Timoshenko beam model are found to be comparable to those derived from finite element analysis.
