Tight-binding study of beryllium

In this work, we have applied the Naval Research Laboratory Tight-binding (NRL-TB) Method to the hcp alkaline-earth metal Beryllium. This approach consists of fitting to energy band and total energy data generated by the Linearized Augmented Plane Wave (LAPW) for the fcc, bcc, sc, and hcp structures as a function of volume. First, we found that using the Generalized Gradient Approximation (GGA) for the input data secures a better agreement to experimental volumes than the LDA. Second, we found that including small volumes to the fit is needed to get TB parameters that are transferable enough to successfully predict the energies of structures that were not fitted, and to perform molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The non-orthogonal Hamiltonian obtained, is successful in correctly predicting the hcp lattice as the ground state of Be and finding eight other structures, that were not fitted to LAPW, positioned at higher energies. In addition, the NRL-TB produces accurate energy bands, densities of states, elastic constants, the Bain path and several quantities derived from MD simulations.

Searching for millicharged particles produced in cosmic-ray air showers

Particles with small electric charges can be produced abundantly in extensive air-showers, generated from the collisions of cosmic rays with the earth's atmosphere. These millicharged particles can leave their imprints at underground experiments via scattering-off electrons. In this report, we present updated constraints using low energy data from Super-Kamiokande, and the XENON1T experiment. Moreover, we provide new sensitivity projections for millicharged particles in the future JUNO neutrino observatory, and discuss different search strategies including both, single-scattering events, and multiple-energy-deposition traces.

Joint analysis of Dark Energy Survey Year 3 data and CMB lensing from SPT and Planck . I. Construction of CMB lensing maps and modeling choices

Joint analyses of cross-correlations between measurements of galaxy positions, galaxy lensing, and lensing of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) offer powerful constraints on the large-scale structure of the Universe. In a forthcoming analysis, we will present cosmological constraints from the analysis of such cross-correlations measured using Year 3 data from the Dark Energy Survey (DES), and CMB data from the South Pole Telescope (SPT) and Planck. Here we present two key ingredients of this analysis: (1) an improved CMB lensing map in the SPT-SZ survey footprint and (2) the analysis methodology that will be used to extract cosmological information from the cross-correlation measurements. Relative to previous lensing maps made from the same CMB observations, we have implemented techniques to remove contamination from the thermal Sunyaev Zel’dovich effect, enabling the extraction of cosmological information from smaller angular scales of the cross-correlation measurements than in previous analyses with DES Year 1 data. We describe our model for the cross-correlations between these maps and DES data, and validate our modeling choices to demonstrate the robustness of our analysis. We then forecast the expected cosmological constraints from the galaxy survey-CMB lensing auto and cross-correlations. We find that the galaxy-CMB lensing and galaxy shear-CMB lensing correlations will on their own provide a constraint on S 8 =σ 8 $\sqrt{Ωm/0.3}$ at the few percent level, providing a powerful consistency check for the DES-only constraints. Finally, we explore scenarios where external priors on shear calibration are removed, finding that the joint analysis of CMB lensing cross-correlations can provide constraints on the shear calibration amplitude at the 5% to 10% level.

GEESS as a Mechanism to Facilitate the Commercialization of Geologic Carbon Sequestration

This is a presentation featuring an overview of the Geoanalytical Economic Evaluation of Saline Storage (GEESS) project and latest results. The GEESS project has worked towards characterizing 57 geologic saline formations targeted for geologic carbon sequestration (GCS) using publicly available datasets. The GEESS system consists of high spatial resolution datasets (up to a 5 km grid spacing) that characterize critical geologic parameters such as depth, thickness, porosity, permeability, fracture pressure, and more. Further, GEESS geologic data were exercised using the FECM/NETL Saline Storage Cost Model (CO2_S_COM) to estimate CO2 plume sizes and the first-year break-even price of CO2 at the grid point level. GEESS is now available on NETL’s Energy Data Exchange (EDX).

Tension-free Dirac strings and steered magnetic charges in 3D artificial spin ice

3D nano-architectures presents a new paradigm in modern condensed matter physics with numerous applications in photonics, biomedicine, and spintronics. They are promising for the realization of 3D magnetic nano-networks for ultra-fast and low-energy data storage. Frustration in these systems can lead to magnetic charges or magnetic monopoles, which can function as mobile, binary information carriers. However, Dirac strings in 2D artificial spin ices bind magnetic charges, while 3D dipolar counterparts require cryogenic temperatures for their stability. Here, we present a micromagnetic study of a highly frustrated 3D artificial spin ice harboring tension-free Dirac strings with unbound magnetic charges at room temperature. We use micromagnetic simulations to demonstrate that the mobility threshold for magnetic charges is by 2 eV lower than their unbinding energy. By applying global magnetic fields, we steer magnetic charges in a given direction omitting unintended switchings. The introduced system paves the way toward 3D magnetic networks for data transport and storage.

Measuring Economy-Wide Circularity of the United States: An Input-Output Model in Mass Units

The ideal of creating closed material cycles by transforming the way we make, use and repurpose goods has become known as the circular economy. Besides its visionary appeal, material efficiency strategies central to circular economy can allow us to meet decarbonization goals that are otherwise out of reach. Production of basic materials such as cement, iron and steel and petrochemicals is one of the largest drivers of greenhouse gas emissions. Measuring circularity, and understanding its relationship with other sustainability metrics, however, is still difficult due to lack of data in mass units covering the entire economic system. Input-output (I-O) tables were originally created as a means of tracking the monetary flows that represent exchanges of goods and services within an economy, but have found additional uses in life cycle assessment and material flow accounts. In the traditional approach of environmentally extended I-O tables, emissions and energy data augment monetary flows. This approach can lead to price effects that distort physical quantities. Also, circular economy strategies and their goals relate to mass, not monetary flows. Therefore, it is best to simulate them using physical quantities. With these issues in mind, we have developed I-O tables in mass units to measure the flow of goods in the U.S. economy. This allows us to better measure how circular the economy really is, and how policy changes to affect this circularity may also affect decarbonization goals. Improving knowledge of these linkages could allow manufacturers to make changes in their production to achieve their sustainability and decarbonization targets. Our tool also provides a standard approach and public repository for data in physical units, making such data more available, useful, and meaningful. Following an established set of material flow metrics used by the European Union, we have used our tool to calculate material footprints over time differentiated by oil and gas versus other extractive industries. This approach also shows the relative trade balances of the U.S. in materials. We have developed a case study for the iron and steel sector, showing how different decarbonization scenarios affect not only economy-wide greenhouse gas emissions, but also total material use.

Oxygen Storage Incorporated Into Net Power and the Allam–Fetvedt Oxy-Fuel sCO2 Power Cycle—Techno-Economic Analysis

Abstract With the planned future reliance on variable renewable energy, the ability to store energy for prolonged time periods will be required to reduce the disruption of market fluctuations. This paper presents a method to analyze a hybrid liquid-oxygen (LOx) storage/direct-fired supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2) power cycle and optimize the economic performance over a diverse range of scenarios. The system utilizes a modified version of the NET Power process to produce energy when energy demand exceeds the supply while displacing much of the cost of the air separation unit (ASU) energy requirements through cryogenic storage of oxygen. The model uses marginal cost of energy data to determine the optimal times to charge and discharge the system over a given scenario. The model then applies ramp rates and other time-dependent factors to generate an economic model for the system without storage considerations. The size of the storage system is then applied to create a realistic model of the plant operation. From the real plant operation model, the amount of energy charged and discharged, the capital expenditures (CAPEX) of each system, energy costs and revenue and other parameters can be calculated. The economic parameters are then combined to calculate the net present value (NPV) of the system for the given scenario. The model was then run through the SMPSO genetic algorithm in Python for a variety of geographic regions and large-scale scenarios (high solar penetration) to maximize the NPV based on multiple parameters for each subsystem. The LOx storage requirements will also be discussed.

A comparative study of cosmic ray intensity variations during 1972-1977 using spacecraft and ground-based observations

A study of cosmic ray intensity variations using data registered by Detector C on Pioneer 10 and the Sulphur Mountain neutron monitor is presented. The spacecraft data were corrected for temperature, Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator background, and contamination by energetic solar particle events. A consistent long-term solar cycle variation intensity is observed, but additional contribution is observed in the neighborhood of 5.1 AU which is attributed to energetic electrons of Jovian origin. The spectral variation in long-term changes of the cosmic ray intensity is studied by comparing the low-energy and high-energy data, and an average value of their ratio during 1972-1977 was found to agree with the value for the 1965-1972 interval.
