Heavy Elements and Electromagnetic Transients from Neutron Star Mergers

Compact binary mergers involving neutron stars can eject a fraction of their mass to space. Being extremely neutron rich, this material undergoes rapid neutron capture nucleosynthesis, and the resulting radioactivity powers fast, short-lived electromagnetic transients known as kilonova or macronova. Such transients are exciting probes of the most extreme physical conditions and their observation signals the enrichment of the Universe with heavy elements. Here the current understanding of the mass ejection mechanisms, the properties of the ejecta, and the resulting radioactive transients are reviewed. The first well-observed event in the aftermath of GW170817 delivered a wealth of insights, but much of today's picture of such events is still based on a patchwork of theoretical studies. Apart from summarizing the current understanding, questions where no consensus has been reached yet are also pointed out, and possible directions for the future research are sketched. In an appendix, a publicly available heating rate library based on the WinNet nuclear reaction network is described, and a simple fit formula to alleviate the implementation in hydrodynamic simulations is provided.

Fluorinated Rocksalt Cathode with Ultra‐high Active Li Content for Lithium‐ion Batteries

Abstract The key to increasing the energy density of lithium‐ion batteries is to incorporate high contents of extractable Li into the cathode. Unfortunately, this triggers formidable challenges including structural instability and irreversible chemistry under operation. Here, we report a new kind of ultra‐high Li compound: Li 4+ x MoO 5 F x (1≤ x ≤3) for cathode with an unprecedented level of electrochemically active Li (>3 Li + per formula), delivering a reversible capacity up to 438 mAh g −1 . Unlike other reported Li‐rich cathodes, Li 4+ x MoO 5 F x presents distinguished structure stability to immunize against irreversible behaviors. Through spectroscopic and electrochemical techniques, we find an anionic redox‐dominated charge compensation with negligible oxygen release and voltage decay. Our theoretical analysis reveals a “reductive effect” of high‐level fluorination stabilizes the anionic redox by reducing the oxygen ions in pure‐Li conditions, enabling a facile, reversible, and high Li‐portion cycling.

Facile Access to Organostibines via Selective Organic Superbase Catalyzed Antimony‐Carbon Protonolysis

Abstract The selective formation of antimony‐carbon bonds via organic superbase catalysis under metal‐ and salt‐free conditions is reported. This novel approach utilizes electron‐deficient stibine, Sb(C 6 F 5 ) 3 , to give upon base‐catalyzed reactions with weakly acidic aromatic and heteroaromatic hydrocarbons access to a range of new aromatic and heteroaromatic stibines, respectively, with loss of C 6 HF 5 . Also, the significantly less electron‐deficient stibines, Ph 2 SbC 6 F 5 and PhSb(C 6 F 5 ) 2 smoothly underwent base‐catalyzed exchange reactions with a range of terminal alkynes to generate the stibines of formulae PhSb(C≡CPh) 2 , and Ph 2 SbC≡CR [R=C 6 H 5 , C 6 H 4 ‐NO 2 , COOEt, CH 2 Cl, CH 2 NEt 2 , CH 2 OSiMe 3 , Sb(C 6 H 5 ) 2 ], respectively. These formal substitution reactions proceed with high selectivity as only the C 6 F 5 groups serve as a leaving group to be liberated as C 6 HF 5 upon formal proton transfer from the alkyne. Kinetic studies of the base‐catalyzed reaction of Ph 2 SbC 6 F 5 with phenyl acetylene to form Ph 2 SbC≡CPh and C 6 HF 5 suggested the empirical rate law to exhibit a first‐order dependence with respect to the base catalyst, alkyne and stibine. DFT calculations support a pathway proceeding via a concerted σ‐bond metathesis transition state, where the base catalyst activates the Sb‐C 6 F 5 bond sequence through secondary bond interactions.

Polysilaketals: High‐Performance Polyether‐Based Electrolytes with Tunable Disubstituted Silane Linkers

Abstract Polymer electrolytes exhibit higher energy density and improved safety in lithium‐ion batteries relative to traditionally used liquid electrolytes but are currently limited by their lower electrochemical performance. Aiming to access polymer electrolytes with competitive electrochemical properties, we developed the anionic ring‐opening polymerization (AROP) of cyclic silaketals to synthesize amorphous silicon‐containing polyether‐based electrolytes with varying substituent bulk of the general formula [OSi(R) 2 (CH 2 CH 2 O) 2 ] n (R=alkyl, phenyl). As opposed to previously reported uncontrolled polycondensation routes toward low molecular weight polysilaketals, AROP allows access to targeted molecular weights above the entanglement threshold of the polymers. The polysilaketal with the lowest steric bulk (P(OSi Me,Me ‐2EO)) exceeds the conductivity of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO), a leading polymer electrolyte. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first solid polymer electrolyte to achieve this benchmark. Steric bulk in polysilaketals was found to impart stability and two bulkier polysilaketals, P(OSi Et,Et ‐2EO) and P(OSi Me,Ph ‐2EO), exhibited higher current fractions than PEO over a wide range of salt loadings. Moreover, the efficacy of P(OSi Et,Et ‐2EO) was competitive with that of PEO. Taken together, the tunable and competitive electrochemical properties of polysilaketals validate the systematic incorporation of silyl groups as a strategy to access high performance polymer electrolytes.

Inhibition of Alkali Metal Reduction of 1-Adamantanol by London Dispersion Effects

Here, a series of alkali metal 1-adamantoxide (OAd 1 ) complexes of formula [M(OAd 1 )(HOAd 1 ) 2 ], where M=Li, Na or K, were synthesised by reduction of 1-adamantanol with excess of the alkali metal. The syntheses indicated that only one out of every three HOAd 1 molecules was reduced. An X-ray diffraction study of the sodium derivative shows that the complex features two unreduced HOAd 1 donors as well as the reduced alkoxide (OAd 1 ), with the Ad 1 fragments clustered together on the same side of the NaO 3 plane, contrary to steric considerations. This is the first example of an alkali metal reduction of an alcohol that is inhibited from completion due to the formation of the [M(OAd 1 )(HOAd 1 ) 2 ] complexes, stabilized by London dispersion effects. NMR spectroscopic studies revealed similar structures for the lithium and potassium derivatives. Computational analyses indicate that decisive London dispersion effects in the molecular structure are a consequence of the many C–H•••H–C interactions between the OAd 1 groups.

Elusive Double Perovskite Iodides: Structural, Optical, and Magnetic Properties

Halide double perovskites [A 2 M I M III X 6 ] are an important class of materials that have garnered substantial interest as non-toxic alternatives to conventional lead iodide perovskites for optoelectronic applications. While numerous studies have examined chloride and bromide double perovskites, reports of iodide double perovskites are rare, and their definitive structural characterization has not been reported. Predictive models have aided us here in the synthesis and characterization of five iodide double perovskites of general formula Cs 2 NaLnI 6 (Ln=Ce, Nd, Gd, Tb, Dy). Finally, the complete crystal structures, structural phase transitions, optical, photoluminescent, and magnetic properties of these compounds are reported.

Generation and Stabilization of a Dinickel Catalyst in a Metal-Organic Framework for Selective Hydrogenation Reactions

Although many monometallic active sites have been installed in metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) for catalytic reactions, there are no effective strategies to generate bimetallic catalysts in MOFs. Here we report the synthesis of a robust, efficient, and reusable MOF catalyst, MOF-NiH, by adaptively generating and stabilizing dinickel active sites using the bipyridine groups in MOF-253 with the formula of Al(OH)(2,2'-bipyridine-5,5'-dicarboxylate) for Z -selective semihydrogenation of alkynes and selective hydrogenation of C=C bonds in α,β-unsaturated aldehydes and ketones. Spectroscopic studies established the dinickel complex (bpy∙ - )Ni II ( μ 2 -H) 2 Ni II (bpy∙ - ) as the active catalyst. MOF-NiH efficiently catalyzed selective hydrogenation reactions with turnover numbers of up to 192 and could be used in five cycles of hydrogenation reactions without catalyst leaching or significant decrease of catalytic activities. The present work uncovers a synthetic strategy toward solution-inaccessible Earth-abundant bimetallic MOF catalysts for sustainable catalysis.

High‐Entropy Lithium Argyrodite Solid Electrolytes Enabling Stable All‐Solid‐State Batteries

Abstract Superionic solid electrolytes (SEs) are essential for bulk‐type solid‐state battery (SSB) applications. Multicomponent SEs are recently attracting attention for their favorable charge‐transport properties, however a thorough understanding of how configurational entropy (ΔS conf ) affects ionic conductivity is lacking. Here, we successfully synthesized a series of halogen‐rich lithium argyrodites with the general formula Li 5.5 PS 4.5 Cl x Br 1.5‐x (0≤x≤1.5). Using neutron powder diffraction and 31 P magic‐angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, the S 2− /Cl − /Br − occupancy on the anion sublattice was quantitatively analyzed. We show that disorder positively affects Li‐ion dynamics, leading to a room‐temperature ionic conductivity of 22.7 mS cm −1 (9.6 mS cm −1 in cold‐pressed state) for Li 5.5 PS 4.5 Cl 0.8 Br 0.7 (ΔS conf =1.98R). To the best of our knowledge, this is the first experimental evidence that configurational entropy of the anion sublattice correlates with ion mobility. Our results indicate the possibility of improving ionic conductivity in ceramic ion conductors by tailoring the degree of compositional complexity. Moreover, the Li 5.5 PS 4.5 Cl 0.8 Br 0.7 SE allowed for stable cycling of single‐crystal LiNi 0.9 Co 0.06 Mn 0.04 O 2 (s‐NCM90) composite cathodes in SSB cells, emphasizing that dual‐substituted lithium argyrodites hold great promise in enabling high‐performance electrochemical energy storage.

Interplay Between Stereochemically Active Lone Pair Repulsions, Sigma Hole Interactions, and Delocalized Redox Processes in Topochemical Fluoride‐Ion Insertion

Topochemical insertion/extraction of cations has emerged as a generalizable strategy for modulating the crystal and electronic structure of periodic solids. In contrast, strategies for topochemical anion insertion are poorly explored and fundamental principles for designing insertion hosts to accommodate anions remain scarce. Here, we observe reversible room-temperature fluoride-ion insertion within tunnels of Sn 2 TiO 4 defined by the stereochemical expression of Sn 5 s 2 lone pairs. X-ray scattering studies of fluoride-ion-insertion-induced crystal structure modulation and X-ray absorption/emission spectroscopy probes of electronic structure along with magnetic susceptibility measurements and first-principles calculations are used to decipher design principles underpinning reversible fluoride-ion insertion and bulk diffusion. Fluoride-ion insertion is enabled by a combination of a large, polarizable tunnel, delocalized redox at Ti─O─Sn centers, inherent repulsion between the fluoride-ion and Sn 5 s 2 electron lone pairs, and the formation of dative interactions between Sn-centered σ-holes and fluoride-ions, yielding a reversible capacity of 0.5 fluoride-ions per Sn 2 TiO 4 formula unit. Our results demonstrate that the complex interplay between dative interactions and stereochemically active lone pair repulsions is critical to defining the thermodynamics and kinetics controlling fluoride-ion insertion and diffusion. As such, the design of fluoride-ion insertion hosts for anion batteries requires site-selective modification to modulate lattice—ion interactions.

A Diazo Linker Ligand Promotes Flexibility and Induced Fit Binding in a Microporous Copper Coordination Network

Abstract Flexible organic linkers represent an intuitive and effective strategy to design flexible metal–organic materials. We report herein a systematic study concerning the effect of varying the central bond of mixed pyridyl‐benzoate linkers, L, upon the flexibility of three isostructuralkddtopology microporous coordination networks (CNs) of formula ML 2 :X‐kdd‐1‐Cu,1= L = (E)‐4‐(pyridin‐4‐yldiazenyl)benzoate;X‐kdd‐2‐Cu,2= L = (E)‐4‐(2‐(pyridin‐4‐yl)vinyl)benzoate; the previously reportedX‐kdd‐3‐Cu,3= L = 4‐(pyridin‐4‐ylethynyl)benzoate. As revealed by single crystal x‐ray diffraction (SCXRD) and gas sorption studies,X‐kdd‐1‐Cu, exhibited gate‐opening during CO 2 and hydrocarbon (C2 and C8) sorption experiments whereas the other two CNs did not. Insight into these phase transformations was gained from in situ variable‐pressure and variable temperature powder X‐ray diffraction (PXRD), SCXRD, and modeling. Rotation of ligand1around the diazo bond, torsion angle changes between phenyl and carboxylate moieties, and deformation of the Cu‐based rod building blocks enabled activatedX‐kdd‐1‐Cuto form new phases with C8 isomers and CH 2 Cl 2 , CH 2 Cl 2 inducing contraction of the activated phase. Computational studies suggest that1enables flexibility thanks to its lower barrier of deformation versus2or3. This study teaches that diazo moieties could offer a general strategy to enhance the flexibility of CNs.

The hydrogen bond between tryptophan and the host molecule induced fluorescence enhancement

Abstract Tryptophan is one of important amino acids in the human body, therefore its detection is particularly important. The 3,5‐bis(4‐pyridyl)‐4‐amino‐1,2,4‐triazole (BPAT) organic molecule was designed to be used as fluorescence detectors to detect tryptophan molecules for the interaction between the host and the guest. BPAT shows good sensitivity and selectivity towards tryptophan compared with other amino acid molecules. The limit of detection obtained from formula 3δ/K SV is considered to be 5.43 × 10 −7 mol/L. We speculated that this change is mainly caused by the hydrogen bond between tryptophan and the host molecule BPAT. This conjecture was verified by the controlled experiments with other host molecules.

The electrolyte comprising more robust water and superhalides transforms Zn-metal anode reversibly and dendrite-free

A great challenge for all aqueous batteries, including Zn-metal batteries, is the parasitic hydrogen evolution reaction on the low-potential anode. Herein, we report the formula of a highly concentrated aqueous electrolyte that mitigates hydrogen evolution by transforming water molecules more inert. The electrolyte comprises primarily ZnCl 2 and LiCl as an additive, both of which are inexpensive salts. The O–H covalent bonds in water get strengthened in a chemical environment that has fewer hydrogen bonding interactions and a greater number of Zn–Cl superhalides, as suggested by integrated characterization and simulation. As a result, the average Coulombic efficiency of zinc-metal anode is raised to an unprecedented >99.7% at 1 mA cm –2 . In the new electrolyte, the plating/stripping processes leave the zinc-metal anode dendrite-free, and the zinc-metal anode delivers stable plating/stripping cycles for 4000 hours with an areal capacity of 4 mAh cm –2 at 2 mA cm –2 . Furthermore, the high Coulombic efficiency of zinc-metal anode in the ZnCl 2 -LiCl mixture electrolyte is demonstrated in full cells with a limited anode. The V 2 O 5 ·H 2 O| |Zn full cell with an N/P mass ratio of 1.2 delivers a stable life of more than 2500 cycles, and the LiMn 2 O 4 | |Zn hybrid cell with an N/P mass ratio of 0.6 exhibits 1500 cycles in its stable life.

Small Molecule Activation with Intramolecular “Inverse” Frustrated Lewis Pairs

The intramolecular “inverse” frustrated Lewis pairs (FLPs) of general formula 1-BR 2 -2-[(Me 2 N) 2 C=N]-C 6 H 4 (3-6) [BR 2 = BMes 2 (3), BC 12 H 8 , (4), BBN (5), BBNO (6)] were synthesized and structurally characterized by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy and X-ray analysis. Furthermore, these novel types of pre-organized FLPs, featuring strongly basic guanidino units rigidly linked to weakly Lewis acidic boryl moieties via an ortho-phenylene linker, are capable of activating H-H, C-H, N-H, O-H, Si-H, B-H and C=O bonds. 4 and 5 deprotonated terminal alkynes to form the zwitterionic borates 1-(RC≡C-BR 2 )-2-[(Me 2 N) 2 C=NH]-C 6 H 4 (R = Ph, H) and reacted with ammonia, BnNH 2 and pyrrolidine, to generate the adducts 1-(R 2 HN→BR 2 )-2-[(Me 2 N) 2 C=NH]-C 6 H 4 , where the N-H functionality is activated by intramolecular H-bond interactions. In addition, 5 was found to rapidly add across the double bond of H 2 CO, PhCHO and PhNCO to form cyclic zwitterionic guanidinium borates in excellent yields. Likewise, 5 is capable of cleaving H 2 , HBPin and PhSiH 3 to form various amino boranes. Collectively, the results demonstrate that these new types of intramolecular FLPs featuring weakly Lewis acidic boryl and strongly basic guanidino moieties are as potent as conventional intramolecular FLPs with strongly Lewis acidic units in activating small molecules.

Synthesis of Non-Aqueous Neptunium(III) Halide Solvates from NpO 2

We report two Np(III) halides, NpI 3 (THF) 4 and NpBr 3 (THF) 4 , have been prepared and isolated in high yields as described in this work. Starting with neptunia (NpO 2 ), NpCl 4 (DME) 2 was first generated in an updated, higher yielding synthesis than what was previously reported by using HCl/HF. This material was then reduced with KC 8 , followed by subsequent ligand exchange, to generate NpBr 3 (THF) 4 and NpI 3 -(THF) 4 . Full characterization by single-crystal X-ray crystallography, 1 H NMR spectroscopy and electronic absorption spectroscopy confirmed the molecular formulas and oxidation states. These trivalent materials are straightforward to synthesize and can be used as starting materials for non-aqueous Np(III) chemistry, obviating the need for rare and restricted Np metal and elemental halogens.

Gallium‐Doping Effects on Structure, Lithium‐Conduction, and Thermochemical Stability of Li 7‐3 x Ga x La 3 Zr 2 O 12 Garnet‐Type Electrolytes

Abstract One of the most promising electrolytes for all‐solid‐state lithium batteries is Li 7 La 3 Zr 2 O 12 . Previously, their thermodynamic stability, Li‐ion conductivity, and structural features induced by Ga‐doping have not been empirically determined or correlated. Here, their interplay was examined for Li 7−3 x Ga x La 3 Zr 2 O 12 with target x Ga=0, 0.25, 0.50, 0.75, and 1.00 atoms per formula unit (apfu). Formation enthalpies, obtained with calorimetry and found to be exothermic at all compositions, linearly decreased in stability with increased x Ga. At dilute x Ga substitution, the formation enthalpy curve shifted stepwise endothermically, and the conductivity increased to a maximum, coinciding with 0.529 Ga apfu. This correlated with percolation threshold analysis (0.558 Ga apfu). Further substitution (0.787 Ga apfu) produced a large decrease in the stability and conductivity due to a large increase in point defects and blocked Li‐migration pathways. At x Ga=1.140 apfu, a small exothermic shift was related to defect cluster organization extending the Li hopping distance and decreased Li‐ion conductivity.
