Twists and Puckers: Tuning Crystal Chemistry in the La(Au x Ge 1– x ) 2 Compositional Series

The physical properties of solid-state materials are closely tied to their crystal structure, yet our understanding of how competing structural arrangements energetically compare is limited. In this work, we explore how small differences in composition affect structure in the La(Au x Ge 1-x ) 2 series of compounds, comprising four unique structure types between LaGe 2 and LaAu 2 . This family includes the previously unknown AlB2-type compound with the stoichiometry La(Au 0.375 Ge 0.625 ) 2 , as well as La(Au 0.25 Ge 0.75 ) 2 , an intergrowth of the AlB 2 and ThSi 2 structure types. We then study the chemical forces driving the structure changes, including using phonon band structure calculations and DFT Chemical Pressure to evaluate atomic size effects. These calculations show that the parent AlB 2 structure type is disfavored in Au-rich compounds due to soft atomic motions along the c axis. The instability of AlB 2 -type LaAuGe is confirmed by the presence of imaginary modes in the phonon band structure that correspond to a ‘puckering’ of the hexagonal AlB 2 -type lattice, resulting in the experimentally observed LiGaGe structure type. The impact of size effects is less clear for Au-poor compositions; instead, ‘twisting’ the AlB 2 structure type to form the ThSi 2 type opens a pseudogap at the Fermi level in the electronic density of states. Here, this investigation demonstrates how crystal structure in solid-state materials can be compositionally tuned based on balancing size and electronics when multiple structure types are in close thermodynamic competition.

Synthesis, Crystal Structure, and Optical Properties of the Barium meta -Pertechnetate Ba[TcO 4 ] 2

High-quality single crystals of the colorless title compound Ba[ 99 TcO 4 ] 2 were prepared from radioactive, isotope-pure 99 TcO 2 by oxidation with H 2 O 2 in an aqueous ammonia solution and subsequent cation metathesis using an ion-exchange column. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction revealed Ba[TcO 4 ] 2 to crystallize isotopically to Ba[MnO 4 ] 2 in the orthorhombic space group Fddd with the lattice parameters a = 747.34(5) pm, b = 1244.08(7) pm, and c = 1511.23(9) pm for Z = 8. Its crystal structure features [BaO 12 ] 22- icosahedra surrounded by ten [TcO 4 ] - tetrahedra connected via two edges and eight corners. The optical properties of Ba[TcO 4 ] 2 investigated by UV-vis spectroscopy show the broad O 2- → Tc 7+ ligand-to-metal charge transfer (2p → 4d) process within these discrete [TcO 4 ]- anions at an absorption maximum of around 350 nm.

Extending the family of reduced [Mn 12 O 12 (O 2 CR) 16 (H 2 O) x ] n- complexes, and their sensitivity to environmental factors

Here, the family of reduced [Mn 12 O 12 (O 2 CR) 16 (H 2 O) 4 ] n- (n = 1, 2) single-molecule magnets (SMMs) has been expanded with the synthesis of new members using I - as a stoichiometric one-electron reducing agent of the neutral n = 0 complexes. Electrochemical data, 1 H NMR spectra of the [Mn 12 O 12 (O 2 CCH 2 Cl) 16 (H 2 O) 3 ] 0,-,2- salts, and the crystal structures of two complexes, (PPh 4 )[Mn 12 O 12 (O 2 CCHCl 2 ) 16 (H 2 O) 4 ] and (PPh 4 ) 2 [Mn 12 O 12 (O 2 CCH 2 Cl) 16 (H 2 O) 3 ] have been obtained. For (PPh 4 ) 2 [Mn 12 O 12 (O 2 CCH 2 Cl) 16 (H 2 O) 3 ], the data confirm an S = 10 ground state, and magnetization vs dc field scans on a pristine crystal exhibit hysteresis loops possessing steps due to quantum tunneling of magnetization (QTM). In addition, two forms of the cluster have been identified in the crystal with distinctly different relaxation barriers, with the faster-relaxing form being the majority one in pristine crystals from mother liquor, and the slower-relaxing one becoming the majority one in vacuum-dried samples. Similar behavior is seen for (PPh 4 )[Mn 12 O 12 (O 2 CCHCl 2 ) 16 (H 2 O) 4 ] with an S = 19 / 2 ground state, which shows three forms to be present in the hysteresis loops of a pristine crystal, all converting to a slow-relaxing form on vacuum-drying. High-frequency EPR spectra of the latter confirm a high axial anisotropy with $\mathcal{D}$ = -0.477 cm -1 and rationalize its effective relaxation barrier U eff = 57 K. The combined work emphasizes a high sensitivity of such ultra-small nanomagnets to environmental influences, affecting their properties significantly, especially their quantum properties that are so important to many potential new 21st century applications.

Electronic and Thermal Properties of the Cation Substitution-Derived Quaternary Chalcogenide CuInSnSe 4

Quaternary chalcogenides continue to be of interest for a variety of technological applications, with physical properties stemming from their structural complexity and stoichiometric variation. In certain structure types, partial vacancies on specific lattice positions present an opportunity to investigate electrical and thermal properties in light of these lattice defects. In this work, we investigated the structural, thermal, and electronic properties of CuInSnSe 4 , a material that belongs to a relatively unexplored class of quaternary chalcogenides with a defect adamantine crystal structure. First-principles calculations together with experimental measurements revealed a chalcopyrite-like structure with inherent vacancies and characteristic s–p and p–d orbital hybridizations in the electronic structure of the material. Cation disorder and lattice anharmonicity result in very low thermal conductivity with values significantly lower than those for related compositions. In conclusion, this work reveals the fundamental physical properties of a previously uninvestigated quaternary chalcogenide and may aid investigations of similar as well as other quaternary chalcogenide compositions.

Benchmark Data Set of Crystalline Organic Semiconductors

This work reports a Benchmark Data set of Crystalline Organic Semiconductors to test calculations of the structural and electronic properties of these materials in the solid state. The data set contains 67 crystals consisting of mostly rigid molecules with a single dominant conformer, covering the majority of known structural types. The experimental crystal structure is available for the entire data set, whereas zero-temperature unit cell volume can be reliably estimated for a subset of 28 crystals. Using this subset, we benchmark r 2 SCAN-D3 and PBE-D3 density functionals. Then, for the entire data set, we benchmark approximate density functional theory (DFT) methods, including GFN1-xTB and DFTB3(3ob-3-1), with various dispersion corrections against r 2 SCAN-D3. Our results show that r 2 SCAN-D3 geometries are accurate within a few percent, which is comparable to the statistical uncertainty of experimental data at a fixed temperature, but the unit cell volume is systematically underestimated by 2% on average. The several times faster PBE-D3 provides an unbiased estimate of the volume for all systems except for molecules with highly polar bonds, for which the volume is substantially overestimated in correlation with the underestimation of atomic charges. Considered approximate DFT methods are orders of magnitude faster and provide qualitatively correct but overcompressed crystal structures unless the dispersion corrections are fitted by unit cell volume.

Crystallizing Atomic Xenon in a Flexible MOF to Probe and Understand Its Temperature-Dependent Breathing Behavior and Unusual Gas Adsorption Phenomenon

Flexible metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) hold great promise as smart materials for specific applications such as gas separation. These materials undergo interesting structural changes in response to guest molecules, which is often associated with unique adsorption behavior not possible for rigid MOFs. Understanding the dynamic behavior of flexible MOFs is crucial yet challenging as it involves weak host–guest interactions and subtle structural transformation not only at the atomic/molecular level but also in a nonsteady state. Here we report an in-depth study on the adsorbate- and temperature-dependent adsorption in a flexible MOF by crystallizing atomic gases into its pores. Mn(ina)2 shows an interesting temperature-dependent response toward noble gases. Its nonmonotonic, temperature-dependent adsorption profile results in an uptake maximum at a temperature threshold, a phenomenon that is unusual. Full characterization of Xe-loaded MOF structures is performed by in situ single-crystal and synchrotron X-ray diffraction, IR spectroscopy, and molecular modeling. The X-ray diffraction analysis offers a detailed explanation into the dynamic structural transformation and provides a convincing rationalization of the unique adsorption behavior at the molecular scale. The guest and temperature dependence of the structural breathing gives rise to an intriguing reverse of Xe/Kr adsorption selectivity as a function of temperature. The presented work may provide further understanding of the adsorption behavior of noble gases in flexible MOF structures.

Neutron Diffraction Study of Significant sp 3 and sp 2 C–H Bond Shortening in a Fluorinated Pyridinium Saccharinate

Here we have experimentally shown by neutron diffraction significant shortening of both $sp^3$- and $sp^2$-hybridized C–H bonds to 1.092(2) and 1.081(1) Å in a hydrogen-bonded crystal of a difluorinated compound, 4-((2,2-difluoroethoxy)methyl)pyridinium saccharinate. Both MP2 and DFT calculations affirmed the C–H bond shrinkages. Sanderson’s electronegativity equalization principle provides insight into the shortening of the C–H covalent bond lengths for both $sp^3$- and $sp^2$-hybridized carbon atoms. To the best of our knowledge, this neutron diffraction study has revealed the largest extents of $sp^3$ and $sp^2$ C–H bond shrinkages with a 3-sigma rule being satisfied.

Product-specific kinetics reveal effect of epoxy crystallization on thermoset thermal degradation

Crystallization is a common problem for epoxy resins, which are ubiquitous in industrial and commercial use. Integration of crystallized epoxy monomers into cured thermosets has been shown to alter the thermosets’ final mechanical properties. However, no studies have investigated the impact of these crystals on the thermal stability of the thermoset. Here we investigate the degradation kinetics of a bisphenol F–based epoxy thermoset with and without crystallized monomers using Product-Specific Kinetic (PSK) analysis coupled with Evolved Gas Analysis-Mass Spectrometry (EGA-MS). PSK analysis revealed significant differences in evolved product ion kinetics, suggesting changes in the degradation kinetics between thermoset configurations. Further, it was concluded that early stages of degradation are influenced most by crystal presence due to the high concentration of unreacted epoxy monomers and lower cross-linking density of the cured network. After post-cure annealing, significant changes are observed in the degradation kinetics of thermosets without crystal inclusions. Conversely, post-cure annealing procedures of crystal integrated thermosets showed little change in the thermoset degradation kinetics across all conversion extents. These findings suggest that post-cure annealing of thermosets with crystals present at the onset does not alter the cross-linking density of the polymer network enough to significantly change the degradation kinetics. We hypothesize this is because the excess monomers from the melted crystals are unable to find suitable reaction sites for complete binding into the polymer network, which has direct implications for the material properties and final thermal stability of the thermoset.

Impact of Solution Chemistry on Growth and Structural Features of Mo-Substituted Spinel Iron Oxides

The effect of crystallizing solution chemistry on the chemistry of subsequently as-grown materials was investigated for Mo-substituted iron oxides prepared by thermally activated co-precipitation. In the presence of Mo ions, we find that varying the oxidation state of the iron precursor from Fe(II) to Fe(III) causes a progressive loss of atomic long-range order with the stabilization of 2-4 nm particles for the sample prepared with Fe(III). The oxidation state of the Fe precursor also affects the distribution of Fe and Mo cations within the spinel structure. Increasing the Fe precursor oxidation state gives decreased Fe-ion occupation and increased Mo-ion occupation of tetrahedral sites, as revealed by the extended X-ray absorption fine structure. The stabilization of Mo within tetrahedral sites appears to be unexpected, considering the octahedral preferred coordination number of Mo(VI). The analysis of the atomic structure of the sample prepared with Fe(III) indicates a local ordering of vacancies and that the occupation of tetrahedral sites by Mo induces a contraction of the interatomic distances within the polyhedra as compared to Fe atoms. Moreover, the occupancy of Mo into the thermodynamic site preference of a Mo dopant in Fe 2 O 3 assessed by density functional theory calculations points to a stronger preference for Mo substitution at octahedral sites. Hence, we suggest that the synthetized compound is thermodynamically metastable, that is, kinetically trapped. Such a state is suggested to be a consequence of the tetrahedral site occupation by Mo ions. The population of these sites, known to be reactive sites enabling particle growth, is concomitant with the stabilization of very small particles. Furthermore, we confirmed our hypothesis by using a blank experiment without Mo ions, further supporting the impact of tetrahedral Mo ions on the growth of iron oxide nanoparticles. Our findings provide new insights into the relationships between the Fechemistry of the crystallizing solution and the structural features of the as-grown Mo-substituted Fe-oxide materials.

Lone Pair Rotational Dynamics in Solids

Traditional classifications of crystalline phases focus on nuclear degrees of freedom. Through examination of both electronic and nuclear structure, we introduce the concept of an electronic plastic crystal. Such a material is classified by crystalline nuclear structure, while localized electronic degrees of freedom — here lone pairs — exhibit orientational motion at finite temperatures. This orientational motion is an emergent phenomenon arising from the coupling between electronic structure and polarization fluctuations generated by collective motions, such as phonons. Using ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, we predict the existence of electronic plastic crystal motion in halogen crystals and halide perovskites, and suggest that such motion may be found in a broad range of solids with lone pair electrons. Finally, such fluctuations in the charge density should be observable, in principle via synchrotron scattering.

Crystallization-induced emission enhancement of alkyl chain-dependent pyrene-based luminogens: Visual detection of nitro-explosives

In view of the widespread applications and urgent need for efficient blue emitting materials, the synthesis of such materials has seen renewed interest. In the present work, three alkyl chain-dependent blue emitting pyrene-based luminogens were synthesized and characterized. Here, the experimental results show that these luminogens exhibited high photoluminescence efficiency both in solution (>86%) and in the solid state (>35%). Interestingly, 1,3,6,8-tetrakis (pentylphenyl)pyrene (TPPy), as a photoelectric functional material, was endowed with higher quantum yield (72%) and competitiveness due to a remarkable crystallization-induced emission enhancement (CIEE) property. More importantly, TPPy exhibits high sensitivity and selectivity for ortho-nitroaniline (o-NA) with low limit of detection (9.99 × 10 -8 M), which is mainly due to the distinctive odd-even effects of the terminal alkyl chain. The results demonstrate that this type of luminogen can potentially be utilized for practical applications in the field of contaminant or explosive detection as a sensitive and portable fluorimeter.

Iron-Catalyzed Cross-[2 + 2] Cycloaddition of Butadiene and α,ω-Dienes for Ductile and Chemically Recyclable Poly(oligocyclobutanes)

Poly(divinyloligocyclobutanes) (pDVOCBs) are a distinct class of butadiene-derived, chemically recyclable polyolefins prepared from iron-catalyzed [2 + 2] cycloaddition followed by ruthenium-catalyzed ADMET polymerization. These polymers are highly crystalline, with high melting temperatures and unique rotator phases. The high degree of crystallinity in these materials not only leads to high stiffness over a broad temperature range but also results in brittle failure for polymers of modest molecular weights. Iron-catalyzed cross-[2 + 2] cycloaddition of butadiene and α,ω-dienes was accomplished, where the number of methylene units between the four-membered rings was systematically varied. Subsequent ADMET polymerization of the resulting telechelic oligomers provided a new class of chemically recyclable polyolefins that exhibit distinct thermomechanical properties. Specifically, methylene units induce changes in crystallinity that, in combination with the increased molecular weight, favored the formation of stable necks upon tensile deformation, with ∼10× enhanced ductility and improved toughness compared to pDVOCB. Through combined experimental and computational studies, the effects of methylene spacers on the crystal-to-rotator transition of the cyclobutane polymers were established. Ultimately, these methylene-modified cyclobutane polymers expand the range of properties and potential applications of this class of recyclable polyolefins.

XFEL Microcrystallography of Self-Assembling Silver n -Alkanethiolates

New synthetic hybrid materials and their increasing complexity have placed growing demands on crystal growth for single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. Unfortunately, not all chemical systems are conducive to the isolation of single crystals for traditional characterization. Here, small-molecule serial femtosecond crystallography (smSFX) at atomic resolution (0.833 Å) is employed to characterize microcrystalline silver n-alkanethiolates with various alkyl chain lengths at X-ray free electron laser facilities, resolving long-standing controversies regarding the atomic connectivity and odd–even effects of layer stacking. smSFX provides high-quality crystal structures directly from the powder of the true unknowns, a capability that is particularly useful for systems having notoriously small or defective crystals. We present crystal structures of silver n-butanethiolate (C4), silver n-hexanethiolate (C6), and silver n-nonanethiolate (C9). We show that an odd–even effect originates from the orientation of the terminal methyl group and its role in packing efficiency. We also propose a secondary odd–even effect involving multiple mosaic blocks in the crystals containing even-numbered chains, identified by selected-area electron diffraction measurements. Finally, we conclude with a discussion of the merits of the synthetic preparation for the preparation of microdiffraction specimens and compare the long-range order in these crystals to that of self-assembled monolayers.

Stacking Fault Induced Symmetry Breaking in van der Waals Nanowires

While traditional ferroelectrics are based on polar crystals in bulk or thin film form, two-dimensional and layered materials can support mechanisms for symmetry breaking between centrosymmetric building blocks, e.g., by creating low-symmetry interfaces in van der Waals stacks. Here, we introduce an approach toward symmetry breaking in van der Waals crystals that relies on the spontaneous incorporation of stacking faults in a nonpolar bulk layer sequence. The concept is realized in nanowires consisting of Se-rich group IV monochalcogenide (GeSe 1–x S x ) alloys, obtained by vapor–liquid–solid growth. The single crystalline wires adopt a layered structure in which the nonpolar A-B bulk stacking along the nanowire axis is interrupted by single-layer stacking faults with local A-A' stacking. Density functional theory explains this behavior by a reduced stacking fault formation energy in GeSe (or Se-rich GeSe 1–x S x alloys). Computations demonstrate that, similar to monochalcogenide monolayers, the inserted A-layers should show a spontaneous electric polarization with a switching barrier consistent with a Curie temperature above room temperature. Second-harmonic generation signals are consistent with a variable density of stacking faults along the wires. Here, our results point to possible routes for designing ferroelectrics via the layer stacking in van der Waals crystals.

Hints of Growth Mechanism Left in Supercrystals

Supercrystals of DNA-functionalized nanoparticles arevisualizedin three dimensions using X-ray ptychographic tomography, and theirreciprocal spaces are mapped with small-angle X-ray scattering inorder to better understand their internal defect structures. X-rayptychographic tomography reveals various types of defects in an assemblythat otherwise exhibits a single crystalline diffraction pattern. On average, supercrystals composed of smaller nanoparticles are smallerin size than supercrystals composed of larger particles. Additionally, supercrystals composed of small nanoparticles are typically aggregatedinto larger "necklace-like" structures. Within theselarger structures, some but not all pairs of connected domains arecoherent in their relative orientations. In contrast, supercrystalscomposed of larger nanoparticles with longer DNA ligands typicallyform faceted crystals. The combination of these two complementaryX-ray techniques reveals that the crystalline assemblies grow by aggregationof smaller assemblies followed by rearrangement of nanoparticles.

Synthesis of Single Crystal Li 2 NpO 4 and Li 4 NpO 5 from Aqueous Lithium Hydroxide Solutions under Mild Hydrothermal Conditions

The ternary oxides, Li 2 NpO 4 and Li 4 NpO 5 , were synthesized under mild hydrothermal conditions using concentrated LiOH solutions containing NpO 2 (NO 3 )( 2 ). The reactions resulted in the formation of single crystals of both compounds, enabling the determination of their single crystal structures for the first time. Further, exploration of the synthetic phase space demonstrates that the resulting neptunate phases are dependent on the concentration of LiOH, transitioning from Li 2 NpO 4 , containing a typical octahedral neptunyl geometry with two shorter Np≡O bonds, at lower LiOH concentrations to Li 4 NpO 5 with two long and four short Np-O bonds under saturated solution conditions. Reactions exploring the same synthetic conditions are also reported for uranyl(VI) for comparison. Raman spectra of the compounds were collected and analyzed to evaluate the Np-O bonding in these compounds.

From Three-Dimensional Clathrates to Two-Dimensional Zintl Phases AMSb 2 (A = Rb, Cs; M = Ga, In) Composed of Pentagonal M–Sb Rings

Three new antimonide Zintl phases, RbGaSb 2 , CsGaSb 2 , and CsInSb 2 , were discovered during exploration of corresponding A–M–Sb (A = Rb, Cs; M = Ga, In) ternary systems while searching for new clathrates. The AGaSb 2 phases crystallize in the tetragonal space group P4 2 /nmc (No. 137) in the LiBS 2 structure type, while CsInSb 2 crystallizes in lower symmetry in the orthorhombic space group Cmce (No. 64) in the KGaSb 2 structure type with additional disorder of one of the Cs sites. The crystal structures of all three reported AMSb 2 compounds are composed of two-dimensional [MSb 2 ] – tetrahedral layers separated by Rb + or Cs + cations. [MSb 2 ] – layers are built from fused M–Sb pentagons and hexagons, which are also the main structural units for A 8 M 27 Sb 19 clathrate cages. The semiconductor nature of AMSb 2 was suggested by band structure calculations and confirmed by transport property characterization. CsGaSb 2 is a rare example of an n-type pnictide Zintl phase. Finally, all reported compounds exhibit low thermal conductivity typical for complex antimonides of heavy elements.
