Numerical Study of Solar Receiver Tube With Modified Surface Roughness for Enhanced and Selective Absorptivity in Concentrated Solar Power Tower

Abstract Concentrated solar power (CSP) is a reliable renewable energy source that is progressively lowering its cost of energy. However, the heat loss due to reflected and emitted radiation hinders the maximum achievable thermal efficiency for solar receiver tubes on the solar tower. Current solar selective coatings cannot withstand the high temperatures that come with state-of-the-art CSP towers often needing to be recoated soon after initial operation. We intend to use Inconel 718 with different additive manufacturing (AM) practices to construct surfaces that allow for more light-trapping to occur. By adjusting printing parameters, we can tailor a surface to allow for more absorption while diminishing emitted radiation heat loss. By using COMSOL Multiphysics, we can generate these theoretical surfaces to emulate a printed surface, and using the coupled Multiphysics we can simulate how the surface dictates radiation properties. Our results show that by having a rougher surface we can enhance the absorptivity of Inconel 718 (IN718) by 38.8%. We expect this work to transform how solar absorber tubes are manufactured without using selective coatings and supplement the US Department of Energy (DOE) 2030 SunShot Initiative.

CARDINAL

Cardinal is a code that automates the workflow for iteratively solving neutral particle transport via the OpenMC code and computational fluid dynamics via the NekRS code within the Multiphysics Object Oriented Simulation Environment (MOOSE), a finite element framework for solving general partial differential equations. Cardinal establishes a mapping between the Monte Carlo geometry representation used in OpenMC and the spectral element mesh used in NekRS to other physics applications built upon the MOOSE framework, allowing high-resolution particle transport and fluid dynamics physics feedback to the MOOSE application ecosystem. Heat generation rates as solved by OpenMC are used as heat sources in MOOSE, while the temperature and density fields from NekRS are used as conjugate heat transfer boundary conditions and/or source fields in MOOSE. OpenMC, Nek5000, and MOOSE are open source, community-developed simulation codes.

Clustering of Observed Diurnal Cycles of Precipitation over the United States for Evaluation of a WRF Multiphysics Regional Climate Ensemble

The diurnal cycle of precipitation during the summer season over the contiguous United States is examined in eight distinct regions. These were identified using cluster analysis applied to the diurnal cycle characteristics at 2141 rainfall gauges over the 10-yr period 1991–2000. Application of the clustering technique provides a physically meaningful way of identifying regions for comparison of model results with observations. The diurnal cycle for each region is specified in terms of 1) total precipitation, 2) frequency of precipitation occurrence, and 3) intensity of precipitation per occurrence on an hourly basis averaged over the 10-yr period. The amplitude and phase of each element of the diurnal cycle was obtained from harmonic analysis and has been compared with the results of a 24-member multiphysics ensemble of simulations produced by the Weather Research and Forecast (WRF) Model on a region-by-region basis. Three cumulus schemes, two radiation schemes, two microphysics schemes, and two planetary boundary layer schemes were included in the ensemble. Simulations of total precipitation showed reasonable agreement with observations in regions where the diurnal cycle is directly influenced by solar radiation, (e.g., the U.S. Southeast), but they were less successful in regions where other factors influence the diurnal cycle (e.g., the central United States). The diurnal cycle of precipitation frequency and intensity showed substantial biases in the simulations of all eight regions, namely, overestimation of occurrences and underestimation of intensities. Simulations were sensitive to the cumulus and radiation schemes but were largely insensitive to either microphysics or planetary boundary layer schemes.

MOOSE Framework Speed and Memory Optimizations

The Multiphysics Object Oriented Simulation Environment (MOOSE) framework has been developed to solve a variety of complex simulations ranging from groundwater flows to full reactor simulations. MOOSE excels at solving fully-implicit, fully-coupled, highly nonlinear models using the Jacobian Free Newton-Krylov (JFNK) method relying on years of expertise in several dependent packages including PETSc, libMesh, Hypre and many others. The modular design of MOOSE enables the rapid development of new physics models that can be coupled with relative ease within the framework for building up simulations of different levels of complexity. With the ongoing adoption of MOOSE to new application areas along with streamlining of existing simulations, the priorities must be adjusted to include code optimizations. This includes both execution speed and the memory footprint of MOOSE-based simulations. These two categories can be further broken down into ''micro-optimizations'' or source code optimizations and algorithmic optimizations where source code is restructured to accomplish the same tasks through a more efficient means. However, before any code optimizations can occur, one must have robust way of measuring these critical simulation properties to identify the best candidates for optimizations along with having a way to identify the effectiveness of proposed optimizations to the framework. This report discusses the preliminary work towards the implementation of a robust execution baseline of the framework and derivative applications under a variety of different simulations. In addition, several potential optimization target areas in both the MOOSE framework and dependent libraries have been identified. An implementation strategy and potential benefits are discussed.

FY17 Status Report on NEAMS Neutronics Activities

Under the U.S. DOE NEAMS program, the high-fidelity neutronics code system has been developed to support the multiphysics modeling and simulation capability named SHARP. The neutronics code system includes the high-fidelity neutronics code PROTEUS, the cross section library and preprocessing tools, the multigroup cross section generation code MC2-3, the in-house meshing generation tool, the perturbation and sensitivity analysis code PERSENT, and post-processing tools. The main objectives of the NEAMS neutronics activities in FY17 are to continue development of an advanced nodal solver in PROTEUS for use in nuclear reactor design and analysis projects, implement a simplified sub-channel based thermal-hydraulic (T/H) capability into PROTEUS to efficiently compute the thermal feedback, improve the performance of PROTEUS-MOCEX using numerical acceleration and code optimization, improve the cross section generation tools including MC2-3, and continue to perform verification and validation tests for PROTEUS.

NEAMS-IPL MOOSE Midyear Framework Activities

Multiphysics Object Oriented Simulation Environement (MOOSE) is a modular, pluggable framework for building complex simulations. The ability to add new objects with custom syntax is a core capability that makes MOOSE a powerful platform for coupling multiple applications together within a single environment. Documentation is not only a required component for a complete software quality assurance plan, but is critical to the overall success and wide-spread adoption of the platform by other researchers and institutions. Therefore, the notion of a modular, pluggable framework has been extended to the creation of documentation content. This report details the methodology for defining the NQA-1 compliant requirements in a manner that allows for the automatic generation of the Software Requirement Specification (SRS), Software Design Description (SDD), and Requirement Traceabiltity Matrix (RTM) from any repository revision.

Evaluation of statistical variation of microstructural properties and temperature effects on creep fracture of Grade 91

This report describes three improvements made to a physically-based model for creep and creep rupture in Grade 91 steel developed as part of the Advanced Reactor Technologies program: 1. Progress on transitioning the model framework to the MOOSE finite element package to improve parallel scalability, increase the physical size of the simulations, and incorporate multiphysics effects into the model. 2. The development of a physically-based method of scaling the model parameters to accurately capture creep in Grade 91 for temperatures in the range of 450° to 500° C. 3. Extending the model to account for microstructural statistical variations, specifically capturing the effect of grain boundary energy on the physical parameters underling the model for grain boundary void nucleation and cavitation. Put together, these improvements result in an accurate, predictive model for the physical response of Grade 91 steel over the expected use temperature range for the material in future liquid metal cooled fast reactors. The model can be used to more accurately predict engineering properties of the material for very long service lives, which could lead to safer, more economical future advanced reactors.
