Robust stability of linear systems: Some computational considerations

The cases of both additive and multiplicative perturbations were discussed and a number of relationships between the two cases were given. A number of computational aspects of the theory were also discussed, including a proposed new method for evaluating general transfer or frequency response matrices. The new method is numerically stable and efficient, requiring only operations to update for new values of the frequency parameter.

Balloon-borne atmospheric spectral measurements

Infrared solar spectra, with .02 per cm resolution, were collected during sunset from a balloon at 40 km on October 27, 1978. Portions of the data obtained during the flight have been compared with theoretical calculations made using the data on the AFGL tape. The results of these comparisons reveal a number of areas of disagreement between theory and experimental results. The areas of disagreement are discussed in detail.

An application of multivariable design techniques to the control of the national transonic facility

The digital versions of optimal linear regulator theory and eigenvalue placement theory are applied to the Mach number control loop of the National Transonic Facility cryogenic wind tunnel. The control laws developed are evaluated on a nonlinear simulation of the tunnel process for a typical est condition and are found to significantly reduce the open loop time required to achieve a Mach number set point.

Particle physics in the very early universe

Events in the very early big bang universe in which elementary particle physics effects may have been dominant are discussed, with attention to the generation of a net baryon number by way of grand unification theory, and emphasis on the possible role of massive neutrinos in increasing current understanding of various cosmological properties and of the constraints placed on neutrino properties by cosmology. It is noted that when grand unification theories are used to describe very early universe interactions, an initially baryon-symmetrical universe can evolve a net baryon excess of 10 to the -9th to 10 to the -11th per photon, given reasonable parameters. If neutrinos have mass, the bulk of the mass of the universe may be in the form of leptons, implying that the form of matter most familiar to physical science may not be the dominant form of matter in the universe.

Convective heat transfer studies at high temperatures with pressure gradient for inlet flow Mach number of 0.45

Heat transfer measurements were determined for a flat plate with and without pressure gradient for various free stream temperatures, wall temperature ratios, and Reynolds numbers for an inlet flow Mach number of 0.45, which is a representative inlet Mach number for gas turbine rotor blades. A shock tube generated the high temperature and pressure air flow, and a variable geometry test section was used to produce inlet flow Mach number of 0.45 and accelerate the flow over the plate to sonic velocity. Thin-film platinum heat gages recorded the local heat flux for laminar, transition, and turbulent boundary layers. The free stream temperatures varied from 611 R (339 K) to 3840 R (2133 K) for a T(w)/T(r,g) temperature ratio of 0.87 to 0.14. The Reynolds number over the heat gages varied from 3000 to 690,000. The experimental heat transfer data were correlated with laminar and turbulent boundary layer theories for the range of temperatures and Reynolds numbers and the transition phenomenon was examined.

Whistler damping at oblique propagation - Laminar shock precursors

This paper addresses the collisionless damping of whistlers observed as precursors standing upstream of oblique, low-Mach number terrestrial bow shocks. The linear theory of electromagnetic waves in a homogeneous Vlasov plasma with Maxwellian distribution functions and a magnetic field is considered. Numerical solutions of the full dispersion equation are presented for whistlers propagating at an arbitrary angle with respect to the magnetic field. It is demonstrated that electron Landau damping attenuates oblique whistlers and that the parameter which determines this damping is beta-e. In a well-defined range of parameters, this theory provides damping lengths which are the same order of magnitude as those observed. Thus electron Landau damping is a plausible process in the dissipation of upstream whistlers. Nonlinear plasma processes which may contribute to precursor damping are also discussed, and criteria for distinguishing among these are described.

Local effects of gravity wave propagation and saturation

In recent years, gravity waves were recognized to play a major role in the dynamics of the middle atmosphere. Perhaps the major effect of such motions are the reversal of the vertical shear of the mean zonal wind and the occurrence of a large turbulent diffusivity in the mesosphere due to gravity wave saturation. Yet, despite the importance of these gravity wave effects, the processes and the consequences of gravity wave propagation and saturation are only beginning to be understood in detail. The linear saturation theory predicts drag and turbulent diffusion due to saturating wave motion. This theory, however, fails to address a number of issues that are certain to be important for gravity wave propagation and saturation in the middle atmosphere. These issues, including wave transience, wave superposition, local convective adjustment, and nonlinearity, are discussed.

Thermosolutal convection during directional solidification. II - Flow transitions

The influence of thermosolutal convection on solute segregation in crystals grown by vertical directional solidification of binary metallic alloys or semiconductors is studied. Finite differences are used in a two-dimensional time-dependent model which assumes a planar crystal-melt interface to obtain numerical results. It is assumed that the configuration is periodic in the horizontal direction. Consideration is given to the possibility of multiple flow states sharing the same period. The results are represented in bifurcation diagrams of the nonlinear states associated with the critical points of linear theory. Variations of the solutal Rayleigh number can lead to the occurrence of multiple steady states, time-periodic states, and quasi-periodic states. This case is compared to that of thermosolutal convection with linear vertical gradients and stress-free boundaries.

Wave interactions in a three-dimensional attachment line boundary layer

The 3-D boundary layer on a swept wing can support different types of hydrodynamic instability. Attention is focused on the so-called spanwise contamination problem, which occurs when the attachment line boundary layer on the leading edge becomes unstable to Tollmien-Schlichting waves. In order to gain insight into the interactions important in that problem, a simplified basic state is considered. This simplified flow corresponds to the swept attachment line boundary layer on an infinite flat plate. The basic flow here is an exact solution of the Navier-Stokes equations and its stability to 2-D waves propagating along the attachment can be considered exactly at finite Reynolds number. This has been done in the linear and weakly nonlinear regimes. The corresponding problem is studied for oblique waves and their interaction with 2-D waves is investigated. In fact, oblique modes cannot be described exactly at finite Reynolds number so it is necessary to make a high Reynolds number approximation and use triple deck theory. It is shown that there are two types of oblique wave which, if excited, cause the destabilization of the 2-D mode and the breakdown of the disturbed flow at a finite distance from the leading edge. First, a low frequency mode related to the viscous stationary crossflow mode is a possible cause of breakdown. Second, a class of oblique wave with frequency comparable with that of the 2-D mode is another cause of breakdown. It is shown that the relative importance of the modes depends on the distance from the attachment line.

Prediction of unsteady rotor-surface heat transfer from wake passings

Predictions using boundary-layer theory with a low-Reynolds number kinetic-energy/dissipation turbulence model are reported for the unsteady heat-flux distributions on the rotor blade surfaces. With an assumed sinusoidal variation for the unsteady surface pressure depicting the effects of convected wake segments, unsteady inviscid-freestream velocity and total enthalpy distributions are determined. Unsteady variations in freestream turbulence due to the wake passings are also considered. The unsteady boundary-layer equations, subject to these freestream conditions, are solved numerically. It was found that most of the unsteady variations in surface heat transfer are due to unsteady pressure changes and not variations in the freestream turbulence. Calculations are made for the Garrett TFE 731-2 HP turbine and the magnitudes of the heat-transfer variations are compared with the measurements of Dunn and Seymour.

Measurement of the electron beam mode in earth's foreshock

High frequency electric field measurements from the AMPTE IRM plasma wave receiver are used to identify three simultaneously excited electrostatic wave modes in the earth's foreshock region: the electron beam mode, the Langmuir mode, and the ion acoustic mode. A technique is developed which allows the rest frame frequecy and wave number of the electron beam waves to be determined. It is shown that the experimentally determined rest frame frequency and wave number agree well with the most unstable frequency and wave number predicted by linear homogeneous Vlasov theory for a plasma with Maxwellian background electrons and a Lorentzian electron beam. From a comparison of the experimentally determined and theoretical values, approximate limits are put on the electron foreshock beam temperatures. A possible generation mechanism for ion acoustic waves involving mode coupling between the electron beam and Langmuir modes is also discussed.

On designing for quality

The problem of ensuring the required quality of products and/or technological processes often becomes more difficult due to the fact that there is not general theory of determining the optimal sets of value of the primary factors, i.e., of the output parameters of the parts and units comprising an object and ensuring the correspondence of the object's parameters to the quality requirements. This is the main reason for the amount of time taken to finish complex vital article. To create this theory, one has to overcome a number of difficulties and to solve the following tasks: the creation of reliable and stable mathematical models showing the influence of the primary factors on the output parameters; finding a new technique of assigning tolerances for primary factors with regard to economical, technological, and other criteria, the technique being based on the solution of the main problem; well reasoned assignment of nominal values for primary factors which serve as the basis for creating tolerances. Each of the above listed tasks is of independent importance. An attempt is made to give solutions for this problem. The above problem dealing with quality ensuring an mathematically formalized aspect is called the multiple inverse problem.

Engineering method for aero-propulsive characteristics at hypersonic Mach numbers

An engineering method has been developed for the rapid analysis of external aerodynamics and propulsive performance characteristics of airbreathing vehicles at hypersonic Mach numbers. This method, based on the theory of characteristics, has been developed to analyze fuselage-wing body combinations and body flaps with blunt or sharp leading/trailing edges. Arbitrary ratio of specific heat for the flowing medium can be specified in the program. Furthermore, the capability exists in the code to compute the inviscid inlet mass capture and momentum flux. The method is under development for computations of pressure distribution, and flow characteristics in the inlet, along with the effect of viscosity. Correlative studies have been performed for representative hypersonic configurations using the current method. The results of these correlations for various aerodynamics parameters are encouraging.

Determination of control-surface characteristics from NACA plain-flap and tab data

The data from previous NACA pressure-distribution investigations of plain flaps and tabs with sealed gaps have been analyzed and are presented in this paper in a form readily applicable to the problems of control-surface design. The experimentally determined variation of aerodynamic parameters with flap chord and tab chord are given in chart form and comparisons are made with the theory. With the aid of these charts and the theoretical relationships for a thin airfoil, the aerodynamic characteristics for control surfaces of any plan form with plain flaps and tabs with sealed gaps may be determined. A discussion of the basic equations of the thin-airfoil theory and the development of a number of additional equations that will be helpful in tail design are presented in the appendixes. The procedure for applying the data is described and a sample problem of horizontal tail design is included. The data presented and the method of application set forth in this report should provide a reasonably accurate and satisfactory means of computing the aerodynamic characteristics of control surfaces.

Atmospheric propagation at larger lateral distances from the flight track

Sonic booms received on the ground tend to be restricted to a region of finite lateral extent below the flight track. This occurs because of refraction and because the effective speed of sound, even with winds taken into account, decreases with altitude in the lower atmosphere. Not all rays proceeding initially downwards from the flight track within an allowable range of initial directions will reach the ground. The restricted region which can be reached by rays impacting the ground is known as the primary carpet. However, weak rumbles are heard in the nominal shadow zone beyond the edge of this carpet. A full wave theory is necessary for explaining waveforms in that region, and the present paper gives a matched asymptotic expansion technique for a suitable approximate full wave theory that involves a relatively small number of parameters. The outer solution is derived from the structure of the system of rays that impact near the corridor edge; the inner solution involves a solution of the parabolic equation and results in the special functions encountered in the diffraction of sound over the tops of hills.

Homogeneous turbulence subjected to mean flow with elliptic streamlines

Direct numerical simulations are performed for homogeneous turbulence with a mean flow having elliptic streamlines. This flow combines the effects of rotation and strain on the turbulence. Qualitative comparisons are made with linear theory for cases with high Rossby number. The nonlinear transfer process is monitored using a generalized skewness. In general, rotation turns off the nonlinear cascade; however, for moderate ellipticities and rotation rates the nonlinear cascade is turned off and then reestablished. Turbulence statistics of interest in turbulence modeling are calculated, including full Reynolds stress budgets.
