Instabilities encountered during heat transfer to a supercritical fluid

Investigation was made of the unstable behavior of a heat-transfer loop operating at a supercritical pressure. Natural convection operation of the loop, with observations on acoustic and slow oscillatory behavior, was emphasized during testing. The basic cause of both types of behavior appeared to originate in the heated boundary layer.

Experimental investigation and analysis of two sources of nozzle-thrust misalignment

Asymmetry of nozzle's throat produces oscillatory type net side-force axial profile. Using mean values of localized static pressure and Mach number, scaling laws for flat-plate supersonic flow over protrusion are applied to nozzle expansion cone irregularities to give approximate indication of perturbed-pressure profiles and induced side forces.

Quadrupole ionization gage measures ultrahigh vacuum

Quadrupole system, energized with a 200 MHz electric field, restrains ionizing electrons within the center of the ionization gage. Oscillatory trajectory of the electrons increases the probability of ionizing the gas molecules, lowers background X-ray level, and increases the signal-to-noise ratio.

Controlled droplet spray generator

Spray generator produces streams of uniform-size droplets issuing at uniform rate by applying an oscillatory disturbance to free liquid jets. Jets of varying diameters can be grouped together and oscillated as a group to produce simultaneous streams of uniform-size droplets.

Examination of the anomalous behavior of three gravity gradient satellites

The anomalous oscillatory behavior of three satellites was examined. The satellites were all hinged, two-body, gravity gradient configurations passively stabilized about their three principal axes by gravity gradient and damper torques. Two basic behavior patterns were observed. Either the satellites were stable with attitude perturbations less than + or - 5 deg or their behavior tended towards a low frequency rigid body oscillation dominated by large yaw motions and in some cases by yaw inversions. A causal relationship between sun angle and the character of satellite behavior was observed which appears to indicate that thermal distortion is a critical factor in a gravity gradient satellite's dynamic behavior. The behavior appeared to be futher modified by the existence of response frequencies that were higher than anticipated values.

Magnetostriction and magnetoelastic quantum oscillations in P-type lead telluride

A detailed experimental and theoretical study of quantum oscillations in the magnetostriction and Young's modulus of p-PbTe is presented. The valance band of PbTe is approximated by a spheroidal, nonparabolic model in which the effects of strain on the valance band parameters are described by a deformation potential model. Using appropriate thermodynamic derivatives of the modified Lifshitz-Kosevich expression for the oscillatory parts of the electronic free energy, it is shown that both types of oscillations arise mainly from relative shifts of the valance band maxima due to shear strains, accompanied by intervalley charge transfer. Band parameters derived from the periods, phases, and spin splitting of the oscillations are in generally good agreement with values reported by other workers. A detailed comparison is made of the experimentally observed oscillation amplitudes with those predicted by theory, and satisfactory agreement is found. The ratio of the amplitudes of the two effects yields a value of the valance band deformation potential in good agreement with a value found from piezoresistance experiments by Burke.

Application of a one-strip integral method to the unsteady supersonic aerodynamics of an inclined flat surface

The method of integral relations is applied in a one-strip approximation to the perturbation equations governing small motions of an inclined, sharp-edged, flat surface about the mean supersonic steady flow. Algebraic expressions for low reduced-frequency aerodynamics are obtained and a set of ordinary differential equations are obtained for general oscillatory motion. Results are presented for low reduced-frequency aerodynamics and for the variation of the unsteady forces with frequency. The method gives accurate results for the aerodynamic forces at low reduced frequency which are in good agreement with available experimental data. However, for cases in which the aerodynamic forces vary rapidly with frequency, the results are qualitatively correct, but of limited accuracy. Calculations indicate that for a range of inclination angles near shock detachment such that the flow in the shock layer is low supersonic, the aerodynamic forces vary rapidly both with inclination angle and with reduced frequency.

Experiments on the dynamic stability of the space shuttle

Some dynamic stability experiments on the space shuttle using a half-model oscillatory technique are discussed. Resulting information from the experiments is presented and includes: (1) dynamic pitching characteristics of both the orbiter and the booster alone as well as of the two models mated into a single launch configuration; (2) the static and dynamic interference effects during an abort separation maneuver; and (3) the dynamic plume interference effect.
