Simulation of random envelope processes.

Efficient and practical methods of simulating stationary and nonstationary random envelope processes are presented. The stationary envelope processes are simulated by using the fast Fourier transform while the nonstationary envelope processes are simulated as the square root of the sum of a series of cosine functions and a series of sine functions with random phase angles. Typical applications of the envelope simulation are the simulations of peaks and troughs which play an important role in the analyses of the first excursion probability, fatigue and crack propagation. In particular, applications to the crack propagation under random loadings are demonstrated in detail.

A new look at the Martian 'violet haze' problem. I - Syrtis Major-Arabia, 1969.

Photographic and photoelectric data obtained in 1969 have been combined to provide a relatively accurate and complete description of the so-called blue clearing phenomenon on Mars. The dark feature Syrtis Major and its surroundings are the subject of the present study. A series of comparison images of Mars in blue light was assembled to form a scale of blue clearing. The scale steps represent about the smallest readily recognizable difference in apparent contrast. The relationship between the scale number and the brightness of Syrtis Major as compared to its surroundings has been established microphotometrically. International Planetary Patrol Program photographs in blue light having Syrtis Major near the center of the disk were compared to the scale and assigned a value. The results indicate that the blue clearing of Syrtis Major was strongly dependent upon phase angle in 1969, reaching a maximum at opposition. Syrtis Major displayed a diurnal variation of blue clearing near opposition. This variation disappeared away from opposition.

Search for a Venus halo effect during 1970.

Photometric observations of Venus during 1970 inferior conjunction, in contrast to observations made during the 1969 inferior conjunction, show no evidence of a Venus halo effect at 158 phase angle. The upper limit to brightening is about 0.005 mag but can still be reconciled with earlier results. Because of the importance of the question of H2O-ice in the Venus clouds, further observations are encouraged to remove the marginality of most observations to date.

On the nature of Iapetus.

For solar system bodies with little or no atmosphere, a linear relation exists between the depth of the negative polarization branch and the reciprocal of the geometric albedo. Considered in this fashion, the polarization data for Iapetus imply an albedo difference by about a factor of 6 between its leading and trailing hemispheres, and are consistent with the amplitude of the light curve for Iapetus. The brightness of the satellite at any particular maximum or minimum is unpredictable by a certain factor because of inadequately understood variations in solar phase angle and rotation. Although other measurements of the Iapetus albedos give results different from those in the presented paper, it is still clear that the two hemispheres have very different albedos.

High resolution measures of polarization and color of selected lunar areas

High resolution observations of intensity, color (UBV) and polarization were obtained with scanning techniques for a number of lunar areas of special interest, including boundaries of some of the brightest and darkest lunar regions, certain Apollo landing sites and prominent craters. Two dimensional raster scans of colors were obtained for Alphonsus, Aristarchus, and Herodotus. The degree of polarization for any given phase angle appears to be roughly indicative of age. The darker younger mare surface are more highly polarized than the lighter and older mare surfaces, which appear to be more contaminated by lighter material from the highlands or by ray material thrown out from fresh craters. All mare surfaces are more highly polarized than the still older and lighter terra regions surrounding the maria. The very oldest craters are either dark-floored and show polarization characteristics similar to those of the mare surfaces, or if located in the highlands, they are less and less distinguishable from the highland background with greater age, and show the general highland polarization characteristics.

Photometric and polarimetric properties of the Bruderheim chondritic meteorite

Photometric and polarimetric laboratory measurements were made as a function of phase angle in the U(0.36 microns), G(0.54 microns) and R(0.67 microns) bands for 0, 30 and 60 deg incident illumination on four particle size ranges of Bruderheim, an L6 olivine-hypersthene chondritic meteorite. The four particle size ranges were: 0.25-4.76 mm coated with less than 74 microns powder, 74-250 microns, and less than 37 microns. In addition, normal reflectance measurements were made in the spectral range from 0.31 to 1.1 microns. Comparison with astronomical data reveals that none of the asteroids in the main belt for which adequate observations exist can be matched with Bruderheim, which is representative of the most common meteoritic material encountered by the Earth. However, it appears from the polarization and photometry data that the surface of the Apollo asteroid Icarus is consistent with an ordinary chondrite composition. This suggests the possibility that this material, although common in Earth-crossing orbits, is rare as a surface constituent in the main asteroid belt.

Electrical impedance of FCC

The electrical characteristics of FCC are investigated in the context of multiple transmission lines theory. Analytical expressions for the coefficients of capacitance of conductors in a single cable are obtained. Numerical values calculated with these expressions are in good agreement with experimental data. Crosstalk, attenuation constants and phase angles of the current and voltage in flat conductor cable are also calculated.

On Digital Simulation of Multicorrelated Random Processes and Its Applications

Two methods are described to simulate, on a digital computer, a set of correlated, stationary, and Gaussian time series with zero mean from the given matrix of power spectral densities and cross spectral densities. The first method is based upon trigonometric series with random amplitudes and deterministic phase angles. The random amplitudes are generated by using a standard random number generator subroutine. An example is given which corresponds to three components of wind velocities at two different spatial locations for a total of six correlated time series. In the second method, the whole process is carried out using the Fast Fourier Transform approach. This method gives more accurate results and works about twenty times faster for a set of six correlated time series.

Measured physical and optical properties of the passive geodetic satellite /Pageos/ and Echo 1.

Two satellites used for geodesy, Pageos and Echo 1, have been observed in a continuing program since 1966 to determine the stability of their physical and optical properties. Measurements are made in the UBVRI spectral system. The amount of solar radiation reflected from a satellite's surface is measured photoelectrically and is calibrated against known stellar magnitudes by standard astronomical techniques. The calibrated satellite magnitudes are analyzed with respect to the sun-satellite-observer phase angle to infer the shape and size of the satellite and the reflective properties of the satellite's surface material. The physical and optical properties are used to determine proper position of the solar image on the satellite's surface, resulting in more precise geometric geodesy. Quantitative results from five observing periods indicate that, although local structural anomalies appear to exist, both satellites essentially maintained their nominal average 30.48-meter (50-ft) radius of curvature and specular reflecting characteristics.

A new look at the Martian 'violet haze' problem. II - 'Blue clearing' in 1969.

The 1969 apparition of Mars has been extensively observed by the International Planetary Patrol Program. Using this material, the distribution of blue clearing in phase angle has been examined for four Martian bright area-dark area pairs. Arabia-Syrtis Major showed a smooth variation with a maximum at opposition. Zephyria-Mare Cimmerium showed a similar behavior except for a period around 20 deg before opposition. Memnonia-Mare Sirenum showed a rather steady decline from 20 deg before opposition to 30 deg after opposition, except for an increase around 11 deg after opposition. Xanthe-Nilokeras showed a rather erratic behavior.

Parallel operation of two Brayton-cycle alternators with parasitic speed controllers.

The experimental paralleling characteristics of two 1200-Hz Brayton-cycle alternators are presented. Since the Brayton power conversion system uses electric speed controllers, the paralleling requirements are somewhat different from those for conventional ground-based power systems. Results include the transient effects of synchronizing the two alternators with various phase-angle, voltage, and frequency differences. Based on these results, the effects of synchronizing differences can be defined, and adjustment requirements of the parasitic speed controllers during synchronizing can be established. Data indicate that parasitically loaded alternators are able to parallel over a wide range of synchronizing differences.

Photometric properties of Saturn's rings.

The spectral reflectivity of Saturn's rings between 0.36 and 1.06 microns is derived from observations of the combined light of the Saturn system and the previously determined spectrum of the disk of Saturn. The rings are red relative to the Sun for wavelengths below 0.7 micron; at longer wavelengths, the spectral reflectivity declines. The amplitude of the opposition effect (anomalous brightening at very small phase angles) shows a maximum at both ends of our spectral range.

UBV photometry of Iapetus.

UBV observations of Iapetus on 34 nights have revealed a 0.30-mag difference in the depths of two successive minima in the light curve of this satellite. The difference can be explained by a two-hemisphere model with the leading darker hemisphere having a much stronger variation in brightness with solar phase angle than the trailing brighter hemisphere. Aside from the variation in the depths of the minima, the general character of the light and color curves is similar to that reported by earlier investigators.

Titan - Polarimetric evidence for an optically thick atmosphere.

The disk-integrated polarization of Titan has been measured at phase angles ranging from 0.4 to 6.1 deg. The observed polarization is positive throughout this interval. This fact, when combined with published photometric data, suggests a model in which an optically thin Rayleigh atmosphere overlies an opaque cloud deck.

Theoretical calculation of Martian airmass.

Analysis of spectroscopic observations of Mars requires values of the effective Martian airmass to obtain true abundances. Semi-arbitrary assumptions for the airmass correction have been used in most of the past publications on the subject. We have computed detailed values corresponding to specified slits superimposed on the disk of the planet, giving useful output in the form of curves presenting the average airmass for different regions of the planet and various conditions of planet diameter, seeing and phase angle.

Results of current Mars studies at the IAU Planetary Research Center

Ground based images obtained hourly by seven observatories are used to study Martian phenomena. Maps of global dust storms show the degree of activity of the storm depends both on the region and on the time of day. Statistical analysis of regional contrast variations on the images supports the opinion that the contrasts in the brightness of the light and dark areas depends on the Martian season. Residual differences may be due to a phase angle dependence. Diagrams confirm the earlier finding that there is a systematic trend of regional contrast with the time of the Martian day and that the afternoon is not symmetric with the morning. The dissipation of Martian polar caps is also discussed.

REDUCE 2: A computer program for the symbolic reduction of large block diagrams

REDUCE 2 is reported as a FORMAC program which symbolically calculates the transfer function(s) of any linear-block-diagram output variable to any or all input variables. The program requires as input a set of algebraic expressions representing the block diagram, the desired transfer function(s), and a string of variables indicating the desired order of reduction. The solution is presented in the compact form of a set of nested functions (super G's). The program can handle systems as large as 600 equations and is intended as a tool for the analysis of complex control and dynamic systems. A companion FORTRAN program, EVAL 2, which numerically evaluates the solution set to obtain amplitude ratio and phase angle as functions of frequency is also presented.

The effect of support flexibility and damping on the dynamic response of a single mass flexible rotor in elastic bearings

The dynamic unabalance response and transient motion of the single mass Jeffcott rotor in elastic bearings mounted on damped, flexible supports are discussed. A steady state analysis of the shaft and the bearing housing motion was made by assuming synchronous precession of the system. The conditions under which the support system would act as a dynamic vibration absorber at the rotor critical speed were studied. Plots of the rotor and support amplitudes, phase angles, and forces transmitted were evaluated by the computer and the performance curves were plotted by an automatic plotter unit. Curves are presented on the optimization of the support housing characteristics of attenuate the rotor synchronous unbalance response.
