Measurement of muon neutrino charged-current quasielasticlike cross section using off-axis NuMI beam at ICARUS

This paper presents the first neutrino cross-section measurement from the ICARUS detector at Fermilab, using Neutrinos at the Main Injector (NuMI) beam data collected from two beam operation periods corresponding to 2.5 × 10 20 protons-on-target in neutrino beam mode. The signal is defined by events with no pions produced in the final state, a topology dominated by charged-current quasielasticlike signatures. The measurement is reported as flux-averaged differential cross sections as functions of kinematic variables that provide sensitivity to the complex nuclear effects that often dominate the systematic uncertainty budgets of neutrino oscillation measurements. Specifically, this work reports cross sections in two angular variables—the angle of the outgoing lepton and the opening angle between the lepton and leading proton—and two variables characterizing the kinematic imbalance between the muon and proton in the plane transverse to the incoming neutrino. These results are compared against predictions from a variety of neutrino event generators, with p values calculated between the extracted cross sections and each prediction. Overall, the predictions agree with the data; however, the current budget of uncertainties does not yet provide sufficient discriminating power to favor a specific model.

First Differential Measurement of the Single 𝜋 + Production Cross Section in Neutrino Neutral-Current Scattering

Since its first observation in the 1970s, neutrino-induced neutral-current single positive pion production (NC⁢1⁢𝜋 + ) has remained an elusive and poorly understood interaction channel. This process is a significant background in neutrino oscillation experiments and studying it further is critical for the physics program of next-generation accelerator-based neutrino oscillation experiments. In this Letter, we present the first double-differential cross-section measurement of NC⁢1⁢𝜋 + interactions using data from the ND280 detector of the T2K experiment collected in 𝜈-beam mode. The measured flux-averaged integrated cross section is 𝜎 = (6.07 ± 1.22) × 10 −41 cm 2 /nucleon. We compare the results on a hydrocarbon target to the predictions of several neutrino interaction generators and final-state-interaction models. While model predictions agree with the differential results, the data show a weak preference for a cross-section normalization approximately 30% higher than predicted by most models studied in this Letter.

New physics particles mixing with mesons: Production in the fragmentation chain

A class of extensions to the Standard Model adds hypothetical long-lived particles (LLPs) that have mass- or kinetic-mixing with neutral mesons, such as pions or rho mesons. The mixing can contribute significantly to the production of LLPs at proton accelerator experiments, and no consistent description of these production modes exists in the literature. In this paper, we develop a framework for studying different LLPs—dark photons, vector mediators coupled to the baryon current, and axionlike particles with different coupling patterns. In particular, we implement the production mechanisms in PYTHIA 8, study how the overall flux and kinematic distributions depend on the LLP’s mass, and compare various subprocesses where the mixing contributes—proton bremsstrahlung, meson decay, and production in the fragmentation chain. We find that our new description of LLP production predicts an integrated flux that differs from current approaches by one to two orders of magnitude, and highlight the unavoidable theoretical uncertainties coming from poor knowledge of the properties of heavy mesons.

Strangeness in the proton from $W+$ charm production and SIDIS data

We perform a global QCD analysis of unpolarized parton distribution functions (PDFs) in the proton, including new 𝑊+⁢ charm production data from 𝑝⁢𝑝 collisions at the LHC and semi-inclusive pion and kaon production data in lepton-nucleon deep-inelastic scattering, both of which have been suggested for constraining the strange quark PDF. Compared with a baseline global fit that does not include these datasets, the new analysis reduces the uncertainty on the strange quark distribution over the range 0.01 < 𝑥 < 0.3, and provides a consistent description of processes sensitive to strangeness in the proton. Including the new datasets, the ratio of strange to nonstrange sea quark distributions is $R_s = (s + \bar{s})/(\bar{u} +\bar{d})$ $=$ {$0.7⁢2^{+0.52}_{−0.34}, 0.4⁢6^{+0.30}_{−0.20}, 0.3⁢2^{+0.23}_{−0.15}$} for 𝑥 ={$0.01, 0.04, 0.1$} at 𝑄 2 $=$ 4 GeV 2 . The data place more stringent constraints on the strange asymmetry $(s - \bar{s})$, which is found to be consistent with zero in this range.

Model-independent measurement of 𝐷 0 −$\overline{D}$ 0 mixing parameters in 𝐷 0 → 𝐾$^{0}_{𝑆}$⁢𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − decays at Belle and Belle II

We perform a model-independent measurement of the 𝐷 0 −$\overline{D}$ 0 mixing parameters using samples of 𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − -collision data collected by the Belle and Belle II experiments that have integrated luminosities of 951 fb −1 and 408 fb −1 , respectively. Approximately 2.05 × 10 6 neutral 𝐷 mesons are reconstructed in the 𝐷 0 → 𝐾$^{0}_{S}$⁢𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − channel, with the neutral 𝐷 flavor tagged by the charge of the pion in the 𝐷* + → 𝐷 0⁢ 𝜋 + decay. Assuming charge-parity symmetry, the mixing parameters are measured to be 𝑥 = (4.0 ±1.7 ±0.4) × 10 −3 and 𝑦 = (2.9 ±1.4 ±0.3) × 10 −3 , where the first uncertainties are statistical and the second systematic. The results are consistent with previous determinations.

Semi-inclusive direct photon + jet and 𝜋 0 + jet correlations measured in 𝑝 + 𝑝 and central Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200GeV

The STAR experiment at RHIC reports new measurements of jet quenching based on the semi- inclusive distribution of charged-particle jets recoiling from direct photon (γ dir ) and neutral pion (π 0 ) triggers in pp and central Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV, for triggers in the range 9 < $E$$^{trig}_{T}$ < 20 GeV. The datasets have integrated luminosities of 3.9nb −1 for Au + Au and 23pb −1 for 𝑝𝑝 collisions. Jets are reconstructed using the anti-𝑘 𝑇 algorithm with resolution parameters 𝑅 = 0.2 and 0.5. The large uncorrelated jet background in central Au + Au collisions is corrected using a mixed-event approach, which enables precise charged-particle jet measurements at low transverse momentum 𝑝$^{ch}_{𝑇,jet}$ and large 𝑅. Recoil-jet distributions are reported in the range 𝑝$^{ch}_{𝑇,jet}$ < 25 GeV/𝑐. Comparison of the distributions measured in 𝑝𝑝 and Au + Au collisions reveals strong medium-induced jet yield suppression for 𝑅 = 0.2 with markedly less suppression for 𝑅 = 0.5. Comparison is also made to theoretical models incorporating jet quenching. Furthermore, these data provide new insight into the mechanisms underlying jet quenching and the angular dependence of medium-induced jet-energy transport and provide new constraints on modeling such effects.

High energy particle production from proton synchrotron radiation in strong magnetic fields in relativistic quantum field theory

We investigate photon, pion, and 𝜌-meson production from proton synchrotron radiation in the presence of strong magnetic fields. The proton decay widths and the luminosities of the emitted particles are calculated within a relativistic quantum framework that incorporates Landau quantization. A scaling rule is derived for the transition probability between different Landau levels. This allows an evaluation of transitions for extremely high Landau numbers exceeding 10 15 . Furthermore, we calculate the momentum distribution of the emitted particles by properly including the proton recoil effect associated with particle emission. The results differ significantly from conventional semiclassical approaches.

Two- and three-meson scattering amplitudes with physical quark masses from lattice QCD

We study systems of two and three mesons composed of pions and kaons at maximal isospin using four CLS ensembles with 𝑎 ≈ 0.063 fm, including one with approximately physical quark masses. Using the stochastic Laplacian-Heaviside method, we determine the energy spectrum of these systems including many levels in different momentum frames and irreducible representations. Using the relativistic two- and three-body finite-volume formalism, we constrain the two- and three-meson K matrices, including not only the leading 𝑠 wave, but also 𝑝 and 𝑑 waves. By solving the three-body integral equations, we determine, for the first time, the physical-point scattering amplitudes for 3⁢𝜋 + , 3⁢𝐾 + , 𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 + ⁢𝐾 + , and 𝐾 + ⁢𝐾 + ⁢𝜋 + systems. These are determined for total angular momentum 𝐽 𝑃 = 0 − , 1 + , and 2 − . We also obtain accurate results for 2⁢𝜋 + , 𝜋 + ⁢𝐾 + , and 2⁢𝐾 + phase shifts. We compare our results to chiral perturbation theory and to phenomenological fits.

First JSNS 2 measurement of the electron neutrino flux using the 12 C⁡(𝜈 𝑒 ,𝑒 − )⁢ 12 N g.s. reaction

JSNS2 (J-PARC Sterile Neutrino Search at J-PARC Spallation Neutron Source) is an experiment searching for sterile neutrinos through the observation of ν¯μ→ν¯e appearance oscillations, using neutrinos produced by muon decay-at-rest. A key aspect of the experiment involves accurately understanding the neutrino flux and the quantities of pions and muons, which are progenitors of (anti)neutrinos, given that their production rates have yet to be measured. We present the first electron-neutrino flux measurement using C12(νe,e−)12Ng.s. reaction in JSNS2, yielding a flux of (6.7±1.6(stat)±1.7(syst))×10−9 cm−2 proton−1 at the JSNS2 detector location, located at 24 meters distance from the mercury target. This flux measurement is consistent with predictions from simulations based on hadron models.

Results from the T2K Experiment on Neutrino Mixing Including a New Far Detector 𝜇-like Sample

We have made improved measurements of three-flavor neutrino mixing with 19.7⁢(16.3) × 10 20 protons on target in (anti-)neutrino-enhanced beam modes. A new sample of muon-neutrino events with tagged pions has been added at the far detector, as well as new proton and photon-tagged samples at the near detector. Significant improvements have been made to the flux and neutrino interaction modeling. T2K data continue to prefer the normal mass ordering and upper octant of sin 2 ⁡𝜃 23 with a near-maximal value of the charge-parity violating phase with best-fit values in the normal ordering of 𝛿 CP = −2.18$^{+1.22}_{−0.47}$, sin 2 ⁡𝜃 23 = 0.559$^{+0.018}_{−0.078}$ and Δ⁢𝑚$^{2}_{32}$ = (+2.506$^{+0.039}_{−0.052}$) × 10 −3 eV 2 .

Binding energy of the 𝑇 𝑏⁢𝑏 tetraquark from lattice QCD with relativistic and nonrelativistic heavy-quark actions

We present a new determination of the $b\bar{b}$𝑢⁢𝑑 (𝐽 𝑃 = 1 + , 𝐼 = 0) tetraquark binding energy using lattice quantum chromodynamics (QCD) with domain-wall light quarks and a nonperturbatively tuned three-parameter anisotropic-clover “relativistic” action for the 𝑏 quarks. We also perform a direct comparison with a reanalysis of data generated in prior work using a lattice-nonrelativistic QCD (NRQCD) action for the 𝑏 quarks and otherwise identical parameters. Using the new data with relativistic 𝑏 quarks from seven different ensembles with multiple lattice spacings and pion masses, we perform combined chiral and continuum extrapolations and obtain (𝑚 𝑇 𝑏⁢𝑏 −𝑚 𝐵 −𝑚 𝐵* ) RHQ =(−76 ±23) MeV. For the NRQCD data from five ensembles, we perform chiral-only extrapolations and obtain (𝑚 𝑇 𝑏⁢𝑏 −𝑚 𝐵 −𝑚 𝐵* ) NRQCD = (−74 ±17 ±10) MeV. The lower magnitude of the results obtained here, compared to the original analysis in [Phys. Rev. D 100, 014503 (2019)], is due to the use of the symmetric parts of the correlation matrices with local four-quark operators only.

Bridging reaction theory and nuclear structure in $π^±-$ 48 Ca scattering

Here, we extend the pion-nucleus multiple-scattering framework to include detailed second-order rescattering dynamics for nuclei with nonzero isospin. To account for intermediate charge-exchange and nucleon spin-flip effects, we develop a scattering potential that depends on the one- and two-body densities of the target nucleus. We compute one-body densities from coupled-cluster theory and two-body densities within the Hartree-Fock approximation. To estimate theoretical uncertainties, we employ modern nuclear Hamiltonians derived from chiral effective field theory. While the sensitivity to nuclear structure details is mild, second-order corrections are found to be sizable and essential for accurately reproducing differential cross sections measured in 𝜋 ± − 48 Ca elastic scattering within the Δ⁡(1232)-resonance region.

Measurement of the 𝐷 0 →𝐾 − ⁢𝜋 + ⁢𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − branching fraction and search for 𝐷 0 → 𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − ⁢𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − and 𝐷 0 →𝐾 + ⁢𝐾 − ⁢𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − decays at Belle

We identify 𝐷 0 candidates via the charge of the pion from 𝐷* + →𝐷 0 ⁢𝜋 + decays and normalize the branching fractions to 𝐷 0 → 𝐾 − ⁢𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − ⁢𝜋 + decays. The branching fraction for decay 𝐷 0 → 𝐾 − ⁢𝜋 + ⁢𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − is measured to be (39.6 ± 4.5 (stat) ± 2.9 (syst)) × 10 −7 , with the dielectron mass in the 𝜌/𝜔 mass region 675 < 𝑚 𝑒⁢𝑒 < 875 MeV/⁢𝑐 2 . We also search for 𝐷 0 → ℎ − ⁡ℎ (′)+ ⁡𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − (ℎ (′) = 𝐾, 𝜋) decays with the dielectron mass near the 𝜂 and 𝜙 resonances, and away from these resonances for the 𝐾 + ⁢𝐾 − ⁢𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − and 𝜋 + ⁢𝜋 − ⁢𝑒 + ⁢𝑒 − modes. For these modes, we find no significant signals and set 90% confidence level upper limits on their branching fractions at the 𝒪⁡(10 −7 ) level.

Polarization observables 𝑇 and 𝐹 in the 𝛾⁢𝑝→𝜋 0 ⁢𝑝 reaction at CLAS

Pion photoproduction in the $\vec{γ}$$\vec{p}$ → π 0 p reaction has been measured in the FROzen Spin Target (FROST) experiment at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. In this experiment, circularly polarized photons with energies up to 3.082 GeV impinged on a transversely polarized frozen-spin target. Final-state protons were detected in the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) Large Acceptance Spectrometer. The polarization observables T and F have been extracted for W from 1445 to 2525 MeV, of which the energy range is much broader, and the precision is better than the existing measurements in higher W ranges. The data generally agree with predictions of present partial-wave analyses but also show marked differences for higher W ranges. By incorporating the present data into the databases, the Scattering Analysis Interactive Data (SAID) fits have been improved with relatively small χ 2 and significant changes in the parameters of the (1910)1/2 + and N(2190)7/2 − have been found with the JüBo model.

FLAG review 2024

We review lattice results related to pion, kaon, 𝐷-meson, 𝐵-meson, and nucleon physics with the aim of making them easily accessible to the nuclear and particle physics communities. More specifically, we report on the determination of the light-quark masses, the form factor 𝑓+⁡(0) arising in the semileptonic 𝐾 → 𝜋 transition at zero momentum transfer, as well as the decay-constant ratio 𝑓 𝐾 ⁡/𝑓 𝜋 and its consequences for the Cabibbo–Kobayashi–Maskawa (CKM) matrix elements 𝑉 𝑢⁢𝑠 and 𝑉 𝑢⁢𝑑 . We review the determination of the 𝐵 𝐾 parameter of neutral kaon mixing as well as the additional four 𝐵 parameters that arise in theories of physics beyond the Standard Model. For the heavy-quark sector, we provide results for 𝑚 𝑐 and 𝑚 𝑏 as well as those for the decay constants, form factors, and mixing parameters of charmed and bottom mesons and baryons. These are the heavy-quark quantities most relevant for the determination of CKM matrix elements and the global CKM unitarity-triangle fit. We review the status of lattice determinations of the strong coupling constant 𝛼 𝑠 . We review the determinations of nucleon charges from the matrix elements of both isovector and flavor-diagonal axial, scalar and tensor local quark bilinears, and momentum fraction, helicity moment and the transversity moment from one-link quark bilinears. We also review determinations of scale-setting quantities. Finally, in this review we have added a new section on the general definition of the low-energy limit of the Standard Model.

Maximally local two-nucleon interactions at N 3 LO in Δ -less chiral effective field theory

We present new maximally local two-nucleon interactions derived in Δ -less chiral effective field theory up to next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order ( N 3 LO ), which include all contact and pion-exchange contributions to the nuclear Hamiltonian up to this order. Our interactions are fit to nucleon-nucleon phase shifts using a Bayesian statistical approach, and explore a wide cutoff range from 0.6 – 0.9 fm ( ≈ 660 – 440 MeV ). These interactions can be straightforwardly employed in quantum Monte Carlo methods, such as the auxiliary field diffusion Monte Carlo method. Together with local three-nucleon forces, calculations with these new interactions will provide improved benchmarks for the structure of atomic nuclei and serve as crucial input to analyses of astrophysical phenomena of neutron stars, such as binary neutron-star mergers. Reaction plane correlated triangular flow in Au + Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 3 GeV

Here, we measure triangular flow relative to the reaction plane at 3 GeV center-of-mass energy in Au + Au collisions at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. A significant v 3 signal for protons is observed, which increases for higher rapidity, higher transverse momentum, and more peripheral collisions. The triangular flow is essentially rapidity-odd with a slope at midrapidity, dv 3 /dy| (y=0) , opposite in sign compared to the slope for directed flow. No significant v 3 signal is observed for charged pions and kaons. Comparisons with models suggest that a mean field potential is required to describe these results, and that the triangular shape of the participant nucleons is the result of stopping and nuclear geometry.

Mixed-species charge and baryon balance functions studies with PYTHIA

Mixed species charge and baryon balance functions are computed based on proton-proton ( p p ) collisions simulated with the PYTHIA8 model. Simulations are performed with selected values of the collision energy s and the Monash tune and the ropes and shoving modes of PYTHIA8 to explore whether such measurements provide useful new information and constraints on mechanisms of particle production in p p collisions. Charge balance functions are studied based on mixed pairs of pions, kaons, and protons, whereas baryon balance functions are computed for mixed low mass strange and nonstrange baryons. Both charge and baryon balance functions of mixed particle pairs feature shapes and amplitudes that sensitively depend on the particle considered owing largely to the particle production mechanisms implemented in PYTHIA. The evolution of balance functions integrals with the longitudinal width of the acceptance are presented and one finds that sums of such integrals for a given reference particle obey expected sum rules for both charge and baryon balance functions. Additionally, both types of balance functions are found to evolve in shape and amplitude with increasing collision energy s and the PYTHIA tunes considered.
