Dual aggregation steering in bulk-heterojunction via solvent engineering toward efficient and stable binary organic solar cells

In high-performance organic solar cells (OSCs), efficient charge transport hinges on a well-optimized morphology of the photoactive layer, which depends critically on controlled aggregation and favorable interactions between donor and acceptor materials. In this work, we introduce a cascade solvent system comprising high-boiling-point ethylbenzene (EB) and low-boiling-point chloroform (CF) to finely tune the aggregation behavior of the D18 donor and L8-BO acceptor. The incorporation of EB not only promotes the H-aggregation of D18 and the J-aggregation of L8-BO but also facilitates the formation of ideal nanoscale phase separation, thereby suppressing bimolecular recombination. As a result, devices processed with the EB/CF solvent blend achieve a best power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 19.6 % and enhanced operational stability, outperforming those fabricated with pure CF (17.1 %). In conclusion, this study offers a reliable and effective strategy for optimizing donor and acceptor aggregation, providing a viable pathway toward higher-performance OSCs.

A 3D nonfullerene electron acceptor with a 9,9'-bicarbazole backbone for high-efficiency organic solar cells

One-dimensional ladder-type nonfullerene electron acceptors (NFAs) with large fused ring cores have been typically used in highly efficient organic solar cells (OSCs). Prior studies have demonstrated that small molecule acceptors with three-dimensional (3D) structures may exhibit low energy loss, and hence can lead to improved OSC performance. In this study, a new 3D NFA ( 99CZ-8F ) with a 9,9'-bicarbazole backbone was designed, synthesized, and characterized, where two linear A-D-A architectures were linked by a single N–N bond. 99CZ-8F showed strong absorption in the range of 500–800 nm in the solid state, which is complementary to the absorption of the donor material PM6 . After regulating the morphology of the active layer via binary solvent mixture, the optimized device exhibited a maximum power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 6.6 ± 0.1%, which is among the best reported values for 3D nonfullerene electron acceptor based OSCs

Smartly Optimizing Crystallinity, Compatibility, and Morphology for Polymer Solar Cells by Small Molecule Acceptor with Unique 2D-EDOT Side Chain

A desired morphology is essential for achieving efficient polymer solar cells. Donors and acceptors with appropriate crystallization can lead to a suitable phase-separated morphology for effective photocurrent generation process. Inspired by the success of Y6 acceptors and the 2D side chain engineering on popular polymer donors and small molecule acceptors, the usage of unique 2D 3,4-ethylene dioxythiophene (EDOT) side chains on Y6 to regulate its crystallinity, compatibility, and thus the related blend morphology is explored. Here, in this study, two molecules of BTP-EDOT-4F and BTP-EDOT-4Cl with such unique 2D EDOT side chains are designed and synthesized. Due to the advantage of EDOT side chain, when these molecules are blended with PM6, the decent power conversion efficiencies (PCEs) of 16.78% and 15.87% are obtained. Furthermore, BTP-EDOT-4F is selected as the third component and added into PM6:L8-BO binary system to form ternary blends. The optimized crystallinity, compatibility, and morphology of such ternary blend are discovered in the presence of BTP-EDOT-4F, which enables efficient exciton dissociation and charge transport as well as decreased recombination, resulting in higher short circuit current density (J sc ) and fill factor. Finally, the outstanding PCE of 18.56% is achieved in ternary blends containing PM6, L8-BO, and BTP-EDOT-4F.

Improved Radiative Recombination in AlInGaP LEDs

Direct-emitting red and amber LEDs based on the AlInGaP material system offer a higher efficacy potential than phosphor-converted (pc) red and amber LEDs due to the absence of Stokes losses. Direct red LEDs (~610-620nm) are increasingly used in color-mixed and color-tunable illumination applications, where they have a significant advantage over pc-red LEDs, with high power conversion efficiency (PCE) and narrower emission enabling higher luminous efficacy of radiation (LER). Still, adoption is limited as the complexities associated with mixing different emitters offset the value of the efficacy gain. Adoption of direct amber LEDs (~580-595nm) in illumination applications is virtually non-existent due to their lower PCE and the availability of very efficient pc-amber emitters, which suffer less from Stokes loss and LER penalties associated with the broader bandwidth than pc-red. Further improvement in PCE of direct red and amber LEDs is needed to achieve wider adoption and ultimately enable more energy savings than possible with pc-LEDs. In this project, Lumileds has developed improved high-power amber and red LEDs incorporating tensile-strain barriers into the active region to improve carrier confinement and thereby increase external quantum efficiency (EQE). This approach is most beneficial for the short (amber) end of the AlInGaP wavelength range where carrier confinement is lowest. An EQE of 22% was achieved for amber LEDs, exceeding the project target of 20%

In situ Al 2 O 3 incorporation enhances the efficiency of CuIn(S,Se) 2 solar cells prepared from molecular-ink solutions

Here, we report an efficiency enhancement of solution-processed CuIn(S,Se) 2 (CISSe) thin film solar cells via in situ incorporation of Al 2 O 3 . These films were produced using inks containing CuCl, InCl 3 , AlNO 3 (Al/Al + In: 0.1) and thiourea dissolved in methanol. After spin coating of these solutions in air, samples were subjected to a selenization process. Auger electron spectroscopy depth-profiling analysis showed that Al is evenly distributed throughout the bulk of the film. Transmission electron microscopy revealed that AlNO 3 precursor reacted with oxygen to form nanosized amorphous Al 2 O 3 grains located within the bulk and grain boundaries of CISSe, as well as at both the top and bottom interfaces. Power conversion efficiency (PCE) as high as 11.6% (JS C : 35.8 mA cm –2 , V OC : 518 mV, FF: 62.2%, no anti-reflection coating) was achieved with Al–CISSe solar cell devices integrated with CdS (chemical bath deposition, thickness: 80 nm) and ZnO/ITO bilayers (sputtered, thickness: 300 nm). The average PCE (10.1%, $\langle$J SC $\rangle$: 34.5 mA cm –2 , $\langle$V OC $\rangle$: 491 mV, $\langle$FF$\rangle$: 59.8%) was nearly 4% (absolute) higher than that measured on CISSe baseline cells fabricated from solutions without Al ($\langle$PCE$\rangle$ = 6.4%, $\langle$J SC $\rangle$: 32.8 mA cm –2 , $\langle$V OC $\rangle$: 410 mV, $\langle$FF$\rangle$: 47.3%). This in situ Al 2 O 3 incorporation is speculated to play a role in the enhancement of the VOC and FF of the devices through passivation of defects in CISSe reducing interface and bulk recombination, as evidenced by a reduced defect density and an increased activation energy of the dominant recombination mechanism from capacitance and temperature-dependent VOC measurements, respectively.

As‐Cast Ternary Organic Solar Cells Based on an Asymmetric Side‐Chains Featured Acceptor with Reduced Voltage Loss and 14.0% Efficiency

Abstract A new small‐molecule nonfullerene acceptor based on the benzo[1,2‐ b :4,5‐ b ′]dithiophene (BDT) fused central core with asymmetrical alkoxy and thienyl side chains, namely TOBDT , is designed and synthesized. The alkoxy unit helps narrow the bandgap, and thienyl side chain helps enhance the intermolecular interaction. As a result, TOBDT is suitable to match the deep‐lying highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) of polymer donor PM6 . Then, a strong crystalline acceptor IDIC is introduced as the third component to fabricate as‐cast nonfullerene ternary devices to achieve absorption and morphology control. Addition of IDIC not only mixes well with TOBDT but modulates the morphology of the blend film, which helps to balance the charge transport properties and reduce the photovoltage loss of ternary devices. All these contribute to synergetic improvement of J sc , V oc , and fill factor parameters, leading to a power conversion efficiency of 14.0% for the as‐cast fullerene‐free ternary device.

Minimizing Energy Loss by Designing Multifunctional Solid Additives to Independent Regulation of Donor and Acceptor Layers for Efficient LBL Polymer Solar Cells

Solid additives are crucial in layer-by-layer (LBL) polymer solar cells (PSCs). Despite its importance, the simultaneous application of solid additives into both donor and acceptor layers has been largely overlooked. In this work, two multifunctional solid additives are actively designed, and investigated the synergistic effect on both donor and acceptor layers. Incorporating the multifunctional solid additives into the donor layer could effectively enhance the aggregation and molecular stacking of the donor polymer, leading to reduced energy disorder and minimizing ΔE 2 . When the multifunctional solid additives are introduced into the acceptor layer, they just play a role in optimizing the morphology, thereby reducing the ΔE 3 . Excitedly, the simultaneous addition of the multifunctional solid additives into both donor and acceptor layers produced a synergistic effect for decreasing ΔE 2 and ΔE 3 simultaneously, especially adding SA2, thus enabling an excellent power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 19.95% (certified as 19.68%) with an open-circuit voltage (V oc ) of 0.921 V, a short circuit current density (J sc ) of 27.08 mA cm -2 and a fill factor (FF) of 79.98%. The work highlights the potential of multifunctional solid additives in independently regulating the properties of donor and acceptor layers, which is expected as a promising approach for further developing higher performance PSCs.

Bandgap Narrowing in Non‐Fullerene Acceptors: Single Atom Substitution Leads to High Optoelectronic Response Beyond 1000 nm

Abstract Two narrow bandgap non‐fullerene acceptors (NBG‐NFAs), namely, COTIC‐4F and SiOTIC‐4F, are designed and synthesized for the fabrication of efficient near‐infrared organic solar cells (OSCs). The chemical structures of the NBG‐NFAs contain a D′‐D‐D′ electron‐rich internal core based on a cyclopentadithiophene (or dithienosilole) (D) and alkoxythienyl (D′) core, end‐capped with the highly electron‐deficient unit 2‐(5,6‐difluoro‐3‐oxo‐2,3‐dihydro‐1H‐inden‐1‐ylidene)malononitrile (A), ultimately providing a A‐D′‐D‐D′‐A molecular configuration that enhances the intramolecular charge transfer characteristics of the excited states. One can thereby reduce the optical bandgap ( E g opt ) to as low as ≈1.10 eV, one of the smallest values for NFAs reported to date. In bulk‐heterojunction (BHJ) OSCs, NBG‐NFA blends with the polymer donor PTB7‐Th yield power conversion efficiencies (PCE) of up to 9.0%, which is particularly high when compared against a range of NBG BHJ blends. Most significantly, it is found that, despite the small energy loss ( E g opt − e V OC ) of 0.52 eV, the PTB7‐Th/NBG‐NFA bulk heterojunction blends can yield short‐circuit current densities of up to 22.8 mA cm −2 , suggesting that the design and application of NBG‐NFA materials have substantial potential to further improve the PCE of OSCs.

Polymer Hole Transport Materials for Perovskite Solar Cells via Buchwald–Hartwig Amination

The development of low-cost materials for charge-selective contacts that provide good energetic alignment with perovskite active layers, favorable thermal properties, and lead to efficient photoconversion is becoming an increasingly important aspect of the perovskite solar cell (PSC) field. Presented here is a series of polymers based on a one-pot polymerization of aryl dihalides with primary aryl amines to produce solution-processable polymers in high yield, with simple purification, and promising properties for high performing P-I-N PSC devices. How these properties can be tuned by careful selection of the reactant chemical moieties is discussed. Through this strategy, a wide range of relevant properties such as glass transition temperature, highest occupied molecular orbital tuning, and polydispersity are explored. When implemented into devices using a triple-cation FAMACs perovskite active layer, the hole transport material series shows average power conversion efficiencies (PCE) in excess of 17%, which is comparable to controls using state-of-the-art poly(triarylamine). How different synthetic parameters such as the reaction time and purification protocol impact device performance is also investigated.

Constructive molecular configurations for surface-defect passivation of perovskite photovoltaics

Surface trap-mediated nonradiative charge recombination is a major limit to achieving high-efficiency metal-halide perovskite photovoltaics. The ionic character of perovskite lattice has enabled molecular defect passivation approaches through interaction between functional groups and defects. However, a lack of in-depth understanding of how the molecular configuration influences the passivation effectiveness is a challenge to rational molecule design. In this work, the chemical environment of a functional group that is activated for defect passivation was systematically investigated with theophylline, caffeine, and theobromine. When N-H and C=O were in an optimal configuration in the molecule, hydrogen-bond formation between N-H and I (iodine) assisted the primary C=O binding with the antisite Pb (lead) defect to maximize surface-defect binding. A stabilized power conversion efficiency of 22.6% of photovoltaic device was demonstrated with theophylline treatment.

Harnessing the power of ab initio calculations, distributed computing and machine learning to efficiently locate extreme molecules for use in carbon-based solar cells (Final Technical Report)

The use of high-throughput virtual screening (HTVS) tools is a powerful tool to expedite the materials discovery of commercially relevant materials. In previous years, our group has developed a molecular discovery platform to generate libraries in order to obtain suitable candidates for different applications, starting from the Harvard Clean Energy Project. This platform is suitable to test in-silico on traditional supercomputing clusters and shared resources, for example, in the IBM World Community Grid. In this project, we used the molecular discovery platform to create and screen a library of candidates of organic photovoltaic (OPVs) molecules. Based on a set of candidates created with combinations of molecular moieties, we were able to filter, by conformation stability, the energy of electronic orbitals and approximated power conversion efficiencies (PCE). To improve the predictions of orbital energies calculated and the PCEs, we used Gaussian Process regression and two sets of molecules. These sets correspond to electronic structure calculations of a higher level of theory and experimental PCE values, respectively. Finally, we selected a subset of the best candidates (molecules with a PCE higher than 10%) to understand its absorbance properties with TD-DFT. This project has demonstrated the capabilities of our molecular discovery platform for HTVS. Finally, machine learning can help us to introduce more complex effects included in bulk conditions and computational intensive calculations on models.

Guanidinium-Assisted Surface Matrix Engineering for Highly Efficient Perovskite Quantum Dot Photovoltaics

Metal halide perovskite quantum dots (Pe-QDs) are of great interest in new-generation photovoltaics (PVs). However, it remains challenging in the construction of conductive and intact Pe-QD films to maximize their functionality. Herein, a ligand-assisted surface matrix strategy to engineer the surface and packing states of Pe-QD solids is demonstrated by a mild thermal annealing treatment after ligand exchange processing (referred to as “LE-TA”) triggered by guanidinium thiocyanate. The “LE-TA” method induces the formation of surface matrix on CsPbI 3 QDs, which is dominated by the cationic guanidinium (GA+) rather than the SCN-, maintaining the intact cubic structure and facilitating interparticle electrical interaction of QD solids. Consequently, the GA-matrix-confined CsPbI 3 QDs exhibit remarkably enhanced charge mobility and carrier diffusion length compared to control ones, leading to a champion power conversion efficiency of 15.21% when assembled in PVs, which is one of the highest among all Pe-QD solar cells. Additionally, the “LE-TA” method shows similar effects when applied to other Pe-QD PV systems like CsPbBr 3 and FAPbI 3 (FA = formamidinium), indicating its versatility in regulating the surfaces of various Pe-QDs. This work may afford new guidelines to construct electrically conductive and structurally intact Pe-QD solids for efficient optoelectronic devices.

Bilayer Electron Transport Layers for High–Performance Rigid and Flexible Perovskite Solar Cells

While great progress is being made in achieving high power conversion efficiency (PCE), durability, and reliability in rigid and flexible n–i–p perovskite solar cells (PSCs), there is still room for improvement. Among myriad ways this can be achieved, one way is to improve the processing and quality of electron transport layers (ETLs) used in PSCs. To that end, here we explore the use of SnO 2 /TiO 2 bilayer ETLs in both rigid and flexible PSCs. In the case of rigid PSCs, chemical bath deposition (CBD) is used where the bilayer architecture affords the CBD of high-quality ETL, which results in PSCs with up to 25.13% PCE and operational stability T 80 (80% of initial PCE retained) of 2220 h under 1-sun continuous illumination with maximum power-point tracking. In the case of flexible PSCs, once again, the bilayer architecture allows us to fabricate high-quality ETL using spin coating, which results in PSCs with up to 22.54% PCE and excellent mechanical durability, withstanding 20 000 bending cycles with ≈92% of the initial PCE retained. Mechanisms underlying the enhanced performance and stability/durability of rigid and flexible PSCs that use SnO 2 /TiO 2 bilayer ETLs are elucidated. Furthermore, this approach could be extended to other ETL systems for PSCs for further improvements in PCE, durability, and reliability.

High‐Efficiency All‐Small‐Molecule Organic Solar Cells Based on an Organic Molecule Donor with Alkylsilyl‐Thienyl Conjugated Side Chains

Abstract Two medium‐bandgap p‐type organic small molecules H21 and H22 with an alkylsily‐thienyl conjugated side chain on benzo[1,2‐ b :4,5‐ b ′]dithiophene central units are synthesized and used as donors in all‐small‐molecule organic solar cells (SM‐OSCs) with a narrow‐bandgap n‐type small molecule 2,2′‐((2Z,2′Z)‐((4,4,9,9‐tetrahexyl‐4,9‐dihydro‐ s ‐indaceno[1,2‐ b :5,6‐ b ′]dithiophene‐2,7‐diyl)bis(methanylylidene))bis(3‐oxo‐2,3‐dihydro‐1H‐indene‐2,1‐diylidene))dimalononitrile (IDIC) as the acceptor. In comparison to H21 with 3‐ethyl rhodanine as the terminal group, H22 with cyanoacetic acid esters as the terminal group shows blueshifted absorption, higher charge‐carrier mobility and better 3D charge pathway in blend films. The power conversion efficiency (PCE) of the SM‐OSCs based on H22:IDIC reaches 10.29% with a higher open‐circuit voltage of 0.942 V and a higher fill factor of 71.15%. The PCE of 10.29% is among the top efficiencies of nonfullerene SM‐OSCs reported in the literature to date.

De Novo Design of Spiro-Type Hole-Transporting Material: Anisotropic Regulation Toward Efficient and Stable Perovskite Solar Cells

2,2',7,7'-Tetrakis(N,N-di-p-methoxyphenyl)-amine-9,9'-spirobifluorene (Spiro-OMeTAD) represents the state-of-the-art hole-transporting material (HTM) in n-i-p perovskite solar cells (PSCs). However, its susceptibility to stability issues has been a long-standing concern. In this study, we embark on a comprehensive exploration of the untapped potential within the family of spiro-type HTMs using an innovative anisotropic regulation strategy. Diverging from conventional approaches that can only modify spirobifluorene with single functional group, this approach allows us to independently tailor the two orthogonal components of the spiro-skeleton at the molecular level. The newly designed HTM, SF-MPA-MCz, features enhanced thermal stability, precise energy level alignment, superior film morphology, and optimized interfacial properties when compared to Spiro-OMeTAD, which contribute to a remarkable power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 24.53% for PSCs employing SF-MPA-MCz with substantially improved thermal stability and operational stability. Note that the optimal concentration for SF-MPA-MCz solution is only 30 mg/ml, significantly lower than Spiro-OMeTAD (>70 mg/ml), which could remarkably reduce the cost especially for large-area processing in future commercialization. This work presents a promising avenue for the versatile design of multifunctional HTMs, offering a blueprint for achieving efficient and stable PSCs.

Integrated linker-regulation and ring-fusion engineering for efficient additive-free non-fullerene organic solar cells

The rational molecular design and structural modification of quasi-two-dimensional fused perylene diimide (quasi-2D FPDI) acceptors have received growing attention for application in non-fullerene organic solar cells (NF-OSCs). Herein, we designed and synthesized two pairs of FPDI acceptors, one in the form of FPDI–π-bridge–FPDI with the π-bridge being either an axisymmetric thiophene (T) or a centrosymmetric thienothiophene (TT) unit, and the other being the corresponding ring-fusion counterpart. Additionally, four small molecule acceptors, namely T-FPDI, TT-FPDI, FT-FPDI and FTT-FPDI, were paired with a common PTB7-Th polymeric electron donor as active materials for a comparative study of the effects of linkers and ring fusion on their photovoltaic performances. The T-FPDI-based NF-OSC exhibited a decent power conversion efficiency (PCE) of 5.50%, while a higher PCE of 7.17% with a simultaneous enhancement in the open circuit voltage ( V oc ), the short-circuit current density ( J sc ) and the fill factor (FF) was achieved for the TT-FPDI-based solar cells. The solar cells based on the ring-fused FT-FPDI and FTT-FPDI acceptors displayed PCEs of 6.75% and 7.66%, respectively, both higher than those of the corresponding non-fused counterparts. Notably, the trade-off between the J sc and V oc , commonly observed in fullerene OSCs, is alleviated in these systems. It is also worth noting that the NF-OSCs based on these FPDI acceptors do not need any solvent additives. Overall, this successful molecular engineering based on novel quasi-2D FPDI building blocks may inspire the development of emergent electron acceptors for high performance additive-free NF-OSCs.

Enhancing Crystallization in Hybrid Perovskite Solar Cells Using Thermally Conductive 2D Boron Nitride Nanosheet Additive

Controlling crystallization and grain growth is crucial for realizing highly efficient hybrid perovskite solar cells (PSCs). In this work, enhanced PSC photovoltaic performance and stability by accelerating perovskite crystallization and grain growth via 2D hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) nanosheet additives incorporated into the active perovskite layer are demonstrated. Specifically, in situ X-ray scattering and infrared thermal imaging during the perovskite annealing process revealed the highly thermally conductive hBN nanosheets promoted the phase conversion and grain growth in the perovskite layer by facilitating a more rapid and spatially uniform temperature rise within the perovskite film. Complementary structural, physicochemical, and electrical characterizations further showed that the hBN nanosheets formed a physical barrier at the perovskite grain boundaries and the interfaces with charge transport layers, passivating defects, and retarding ion migration. As a result, the power conversion efficiency of the PSC is improved from 17.4% to 19.8%, along with enhanced device stability, retaining ≈90% of the initial efficiency even after 500 h ambient air storage. Here, the results not only highlight 2D hBN as an effective additive for PSCs but also suggest enhanced thermal transport as one of the pathways for improved PSC performance by 2D material additives in general.

Enhanced charge carrier extraction and transport with interface modification for efficient tin-based perovskite solar cells

Interface modification improves charge carrier extraction in tin-based perovskite solar cells. Tin-based perovskites have become the most promising non-lead perovskites due to their ideal band gap and low toxicity. Although the open circuit voltage of tin-based perovskite solar cells (TPSCs) continues to approach the theoretical value, the short-circuit current is still far from the theoretical value. Here, we describe an interface modification method by regulating the property of hole transport layer, PEDOT:PSS, which improves the surface molecular morphology and the energy level alignment of PEDOT:PSS/perovskite interface. Advanced GIWAXS and IR s-SNOM characterization are conducted to achieve multi-dimensional characterization of nanoscale surface morphology and chemical distribution of PEDOT:PSS. With the multi-attribute optimization, charge carrier extraction and non-radiative recombination are also improved. The resultant TPSCs exhibit a higher power conversion efficiency of 13.32% in compared with the control device of 10.50%, accompanied with an increase in the short-circuit current from 18.10 to 20.50 mA cm −2 and FF from 68.23% to 76.43%. This work demonstrates a reliable strategy for improving charge carrier extraction and device performance for lead-free TPSCs.
