High-Precision Mapping of Diamond Crystal Strain Using Quantum Interferometry

Crystal-strain variation imposes significant limitations on many quantum sensing and information applications for solid-state defect qubits in diamond. Thus, the precision measurement and control of diamond crystal strain is a key challenge. Here, we report diamond strain measurements with a unique set of capabilities, including micron-scale spatial resolution, a millimeter-scale field of view, and a 2-order-of-magnitude improvement in volume-normalized sensitivity over previous work, reaching 5(2)×10 -8 /√Hzμm -3 (with spin-strain coupling coefficients representing the dominant systematic uncertainty). We use strain-sensitive spin-state interferometry on ensembles of nitrogen-vacancy (N-V) color centers in single-crystal bulk diamond with low strain gradients. This quantum interferometry technique provides insensitivity to magnetic-field inhomogeneity from the electronic and nuclear spin bath, thereby enabling long N-V–ensemble electronic spin dephasing times and enhanced strain sensitivity, as well as broadening the potential applications of the technique beyond isotopically enriched or high-purity diamond. We demonstrate the strain-sensitive measurement protocol first on a confocal scanning laser microscope, providing quantitative measurement of sensitivity as well as three-dimensional strain mapping; and second on a wide-field-imaging quantum diamond microscope. Our strain-microscopy technique enables fast, sensitive characterization for diamond material engineering and nanofabrication; as well as diamond-based sensing of strains applied externally, as in diamond anvil cells or embedded diamond stress sensors, or internally, as by crystal damage due to particle-induced nuclear recoils.

Precisely computing phonons via irreducible derivatives

Computing phonons from first principles is typically considered a solved problem, yet inadequacies in existing techniques continue to yield deficient results in systems with sensitive phonons. Here, in this study, we circumvent this issue using the lone irreducible derivative (LID) and bundled irreducible derivative (BID) approaches to computing phonons via finite displacements, where the former optimizes precision via energy derivatives and the latter provides the most efficient algorithm using force derivatives. A condition number optimized basis for BID is derived which guarantees the minimum amplification of error. Additionally, a hybrid LID-BID approach is formulated, in which select irreducible derivatives computed using LID replace BID results. We illustrate our approach on two prototypical systems with sensitive phonons: the shape memory alloy AuZn and metallic lithium. Comparing our resulting phonons in the aforementioned crystals to calculations in the literature reveals nontrivial inaccuracies. Our approaches can be fully automated, making them well suited for both niche systems of interest and high-throughput approaches.

New precise half-life measurement for the superallowed β+ emitter Ar34

We have measured the half-life of 34 Ar, the parent of a superallowed 0 + → 0 + β transition, to be 0.84646(35) s. With a precision of 0.04%, this result is an essential ingredient needed to complete a third pair of mirror superallowed transitions, 34 Ar → 34 Cl and 34 Cl → 34 S, the ratio of whose ft values would provide the most sensitive test yet of the isospin-symmetry-breaking corrections used to obtain V ud . In a sequence repeated thousands of times, we implanted a very pure 34 Ar beam into tape for 0.7 s, and then rapidly transported the collected source to a shielded 4π proportional gas counter, which detected the decay positrons from the combined decays of 34 Ar and its daughter 34 Cl. The data were analyzed as a linked parent-daughter pair. Our new result replaces one we published 13 years ago.

Searching for the origin of the rare-earth peak with precision mass measurements across Ce–Eu isotopic chains

A nuclear mass survey of rare-earth isotopes has been conducted with the Canadian Penning Trap mass spectrometer using the most neutron-rich nuclei thus far extracted from the CARIBU facility. Here, we present a collection of 12 nuclear masses determined with a precision of ≤ 10 keV/c 2 for Z = 58-63 nuclei near N = 100. Independently, a detailed study exploring the role of nuclear masses in the formation of the r-process rare-earth abundance peak has been performed. Employing a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) technique, mass predictions of lanthanide isotopes have been made which uniquely reproduce the observed solar abundances near A = 164 under three distinct astrophysical outflow conditions. We demonstrate that the mass surface trends thus far mapped out by our measurements are most consistent with MCMC mass predictions given an r process that forms the rare-earth peak during an extended (n, γ) ⇌ (γ, n) equilibrium.

Precision half-life determination for the β + emitter N 13

A new precision half-life measurement of 13 N has been conducted using the TwinSol β-counting station at the University of Notre Dame. Here, the measured value of $t^{new}_{1/2}$ = 597.05(19) s differs from the previous world value by about 2.8σ. An evaluation of the 13N half-life results in a $t^{world}_{1/2}$ = 597.19(22) s. Updated Standard Model predictions for the Fermi to Gamow-Teller mixing ratio ρ and its associated correlation parameters have been calculated using the new 13 N world half life in preparation for a future measurement of the mixing ratio. Finally, an ab initio no-core configuration interaction (NCCI) calculation for the B(GT) of this decay, carried out using the Daejeon16 interaction, has been carried out, revealing the need for higher-order chiral corrections.

Precise mass measurement of the longest odd-odd chain of nuclei with 1+ ground states

Precise mass measurements of the ground and isomeric states of the odd-odd Rh108,110,112,114,116 were performed using the Canadian Penning Trap at Argonne National Laboratory, showing good agreement with recent JYFLTRAP measurements. A new possible isomeric state of Rh114 was also observed. These isotopes are part of the longest odd-odd chain of identical ground-state spin-parity assignment of 1+, spanning Rh104–118, despite being in a region of deformation. Realistic phenomenological mean-field calculations using the “universal” Wood-Saxon Hamiltonian were performed, which explained this phenomenon for the first time. In addition, multiquasiparticle blocking calculations were performed to study the configuration of low-lying states in the odd-odd Rh nuclei, elucidating anomalous isomeric yield ratio observed for Rh114.

Dark energy survey year 3 results: High-precision measurement and modeling of galaxy-galaxy lensing

We present and characterize the galaxy-galaxy lensing signal measured using the first three years of data from the Dark Energy Survey (DES Y3) covering 4132 deg 2 . These galaxy-galaxy measurements are used in the DES Y3 3 × 2 pt cosmological analysis, which combines weak lensing and galaxy clustering information. We use two lens samples: a magnitude-limited sample and the redmagic sample, which span the redshift range ∼ 0.2 – 1 with 10.7 and 2.6 M galaxies, respectively. For the source catalog, we use the metacalibration shape sample, consisting of ≃ 100 M galaxies separated into four tomographic bins. Our galaxy-galaxy lensing estimator is the mean tangential shear, for which we obtain a total SNR of ∼ 148 for maglim ( ∼ 120 for redmagic), and ∼ 67 ( ∼ 55 ) after applying the scale cuts of 6 Mpc / h . Thus we reach percent-level statistical precision, which requires that our modeling and systematic-error control be of comparable accuracy. The tangential shear model used in the 3 × 2 pt cosmological analysis includes lens magnification, a five-parameter intrinsic alignment model, marginalization over a point mass to remove information from small scales and a linear galaxy bias model validated with higher-order terms. We explore the impact of these choices on the tangential shear observable and study the significance of effects not included in our model, such as reduced shear, source magnification, and source clustering. We also test the robustness of our measurements to various observational and systematics effects, such as the impact of observing conditions, lens-source clustering, random-point subtraction, scale-dependent metacalibration responses, point spread function residuals, and B modes.

Exploring the impact of high-precision top-quark pair production data on the structure of the proton at the LHC

The impact of recent LHC top-quark pair production single differential cross section measurements at 13 TeV collision energy on the structure of the proton is explored. In particular, the impact of these high-precision data on the gluon and other parton distribution functions (PDFs) of the proton at intermediate and large partonic momentum fraction x is analyzed. This study extends the CT18 global analysis framework to include these new data. The interplay between top-quark pair and inclusive jet production as well as other processes at the LHC, is studied. In addition, a study of the impact of scale choice on the theory description of the new 13 TeV t t ¯ measurements is performed. Published by the American Physical Society 2024

Constraining gravity with a new precision 𝐸 𝐺 estimator using Planck + SDSS BOSS data

The 𝐸 𝐺 statistic is a discriminating probe of gravity developed to test the prediction of general relativity (GR) for the relation between gravitational potential and clustering on the largest scales in the observable Universe. We present a novel high-precision estimator for the 𝐸 𝐺 statistic using CMB lensing and galaxy clustering correlations that carefully matches the effective redshifts across the different measurement components to minimize corrections. A suite of detailed tests is performed to characterize the estimator’s accuracy, its sensitivity to assumptions and analysis choices, and the non-Gaussianity of the estimator’s uncertainty is characterized. After finalization of the estimator, it is applied to Planck CMB lensing and SDSS CMASS and LOWZ galaxy data. We report the first harmonic space measurement of 𝐸 𝐺 using the LOWZ sample and CMB lensing and also updated constraints using the final CMASS sample and the latest Planck CMB lensing map. We find $\hat{𝐸}$$^{Planck+CMASS}_{𝐺}$ = 0.3⁢6$^{+0.06}_{−0.05}$⁢(68.27%) and $\hat{𝐸}$$^{Planck+LOWZ}_{𝐺}$ = 0.4⁢0$^{+0.11}_{−0.09}$⁢(68.27%), with additional subdominant systematic error budget estimates of 2% and 3%, respectively. Using Ω m,0 constraints from Planck and SDSS BAO observations, Λ⁢CDM-GR predicts 𝐸$^{GR}_ {𝐺}$⁡(𝑧 =0.555) = 0.401 ± 0.005 and 𝐸$^{GR}_{𝐺}$⁡(𝑧 =0.316) = 0.452 ± 0.005 at the effective redshifts of the CMASS and LOWZ based measurements. We report the measurement to be in good statistical agreement with the Λ⁢CDM-GR prediction and report that the measurement is also consistent with the more general GR prediction of scale independence for 𝐸 𝐺 . Furthermore, this work provides a carefully constructed and calibrated statistic with which 𝐸 𝐺 measurements can be confidently and accurately obtained with upcoming survey data.

Precision measurement of the Ξ b − baryon lifetime

A sample of p p collision data, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.5 fb − 1 and collected by the LHCb experiment during LHC Run 2, is used to measure the ratio of the lifetime of the Ξ b − baryon to that of the Λ b 0 baryon, r τ ≡ τ Ξ b − / τ Λ b 0 . The value r τ = 1.076 ± 0.013 ± 0.006 is obtained, where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic. This value is averaged with the corresponding value from Run 1 to obtain r τ Run 1 , 2 = 1.078 ± 0.012 ± 0.007 . Multiplying by the world-average value of the Λ b 0 lifetime yields τ Ξ b − Run 1 , 2 = 1.578 ± 0.018 ± 0.010 ± 0.011 ps , where the uncertainties are statistical, systematic, and due to the limited knowledge of the Λ b 0 lifetime. This measurement improves the precision of the current world average of the Ξ b − lifetime by about a factor of 2, and is in good agreement with the most recent theoretical predictions. © 2024 CERN, for the LHCb Collaboration 2024 CERN

Precision measurements of EFT parameters and BAO peak shifts for the Lyman- α forest

We present precision measurements of the bias parameters of the one-loop power spectrum model of the Lyman- α (Ly- α ) forest, derived within the effective field theory (EFT) of large-scale structure. We fit our model to the three-dimensional flux power spectrum measured from the ACCEL 2 hydrodynamic simulations. The EFT model fits the data with an accuracy of below 2% up to k = 2 h Mpc − 1 . Further, we analytically derive how nonlinearities in the three-dimensional clustering of the Ly- α forest introduce biases in measurements of the baryon acoustic oscillations (BAOs) scaling parameters in radial and transverse directions. From our EFT parameter measurements, we obtain a theoretical error budget of Δ α ∥ = − 0.2 % ( Δ α ⊥ = − 0.3 % ) for the radial (transverse) parameters at redshift z = 2.0 . This corresponds to a shift of − 0.3 % (0.1%) for the isotropic (anisotropic) distance measurements. We provide an estimate for the shift of the BAO peak for Ly- α -quasar cross-correlation measurements assuming analytical and simulation-based scaling relations for the nonlinear quasar bias parameters resulting in a shift of − 0.2 % ( − 0.1 % ) for the radial (transverse) dilation parameters, respectively. This analysis emphasizes the robustness of Ly- α forest BAO measurements to the theory modeling. We provide informative priors and an error budget for measuring the BAO feature—a key science driver of the currently observing Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI). Our work paves the way for full-shape cosmological analyses of Ly- α forest data from DESI and upcoming surveys such as the Prime Focus Spectrograph, WEAVE-QSO, and 4MOST. Precise Experimental Test of the Luttinger Theorem and Particle-Hole Symmetry for a Strongly Correlated Fermionic System

A fundamental concept in physics is the Fermi surface, the constant-energy surface in momentum space encompassing all the occupied quantum states at absolute zero temperature. In 1960, Luttinger postulated that the area enclosed by the Fermi surface should remain unaffected even when electron-electron interaction is turned on, so long as the interaction does not cause a phase transition. Understanding what determines the Fermi surface size is a crucial and yet unsolved problem in strongly interacting systems such as high-$T_c$ superconductors. Here we present a precise test of the Luttinger theorem for a two-dimensional Fermi liquid system where the exotic quasiparticles themselves emerge from the strong interaction, namely, for the Fermi sea of composite fermions (CFs). Via direct, geometric resonance measurements of the CFs’ Fermi wave vector down to very low electron densities, we show that the Luttinger theorem is obeyed over a significant range of interaction strengths, in the sense that the Fermi sea area is determined by the density of the minority carriers in the lowest Landau level. Our data in this work also address the ongoing debates on whether or not CFs obey particle-hole symmetry, and if they are Dirac particles. We find that particle-hole symmetry is obeyed, but the measured Fermi sea area differs quantitatively from that predicted by the Dirac model for CFs.

First Precision Measurement of the Parity Violating Asymmetry in Cold Neutron Capture on 3 He

We report the first precision measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry in the direction of proton momentum with respect to the neutron spin, in the reaction 3 He(n,p) 3 H, using the capture of polarized cold neutrons in an unpolarized active 3 He target. The asymmetry is a result of the weak interaction between nucleons, which remains one of the least well-understood aspects of electroweak theory. The measurement provides an important benchmark for modern effective field theory and potential model calculations. Measurements like this are necessary to determine the spin-isospin structure of the hadronic weak interaction. Our asymmetry result is A PV =[1.55±0.97(stat)±0.24(sys)]×10 -8 , which has the smallest uncertainty of any hadronic parity-violating asymmetry measurement so far.

Observation of the p η ' Cusp in the New Precise Beam Asymmetry Σ Data for γ p → p η

Data on the beam asymmetry Σ in the photoproduction of η mesons off protons are reported for tagged photon energies from 1130 to 1790 MeV (mass range from W = 1748 MeV to W = 2045 MeV). The data cover the full solid angle that allows for a precise moment analysis. For the first time, a strong cusp effect in a polarization observable has been observed that is an effect of a branch-point singularity at the pη' threshold [E γ = 1447 MeV (W = 1896 MeV)]. Here, the latest BnGa partial wave analysis includes the new beam asymmetry data and yields a strong indication for the N(1895)1/2 – nucleon resonance, demonstrating the importance of including all singularities for a correct determination of partial waves and resonance parameters.

Role of Chiral Two-Body Currents in 6 Li Magnetic Properties in Light of a New Precision Measurement with the Relative Self-Absorption Technique

A direct measurement of the decay width of the excited $0^+_1$ state of 6 Li using the relative self-absorption technique is reported. Our value of $Γ_{γ,0^{+}_{1}} → 1^{+}_{1}$ = 8.17 (14) stat. (11) syst. eV provides sufficiently low experimental uncertainties to test modern theories of nuclear forces. The corresponding transition rate is compared to the results of ab initio calculations based on chiral effective field theory that take into account contributions to the magnetic dipole operator beyond leading order. This allows for a precision test of the impact of two-body currents that enter at next-to-leading order.

Precision Determination of the Neutral Weak Form Factor of Ca 48

In this work, we report a precise measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry $A_{\rm PV}$ in the elastic scattering of longitudinally polarized electrons from $^{48}{\rm Ca}$. We measure $A_{\rm PV} =2668\pm 106\ {\rm (stat)}\pm 40\ {\rm (syst)}$ parts per billion, leading to an extraction of the neutral weak form factor $F_{\rm W} (q=0.8733$ fm$^{-1}) = 0.1304 \pm 0.0052 \ {\rm (stat)}\pm 0.0020\ {\rm (syst)}$ and the charge minus the weak form factor $F_{\rm ch} - F_{\rm W} = 0.0277\pm 0.0055$. The resulting neutron skin thickness $R_n-R_p=0.121 \pm 0.026\ {\rm (exp)} \pm 0.024\ {\rm (model)}$~fm is relatively thin yet consistent with many model calculations. The combined CREX and PREX results will have implications for future energy density functional calculations and on the density dependence of the symmetry energy of nuclear matter.

Model-Independent Determination of Nuclear Weak Form Factors and Implications for Standard Model Precision Tests

We analyze the recoil corrections in superallowed beta decays of T = 1, J P = 0 + nuclei by fixing the mean square charged weak radius model independently using the data of multiple charge radii across the nuclear isotriplet. By comparing to model estimations, we argue that the existing theory uncertainty in the statistical rate function f might have been substantially underestimated. Here, we discuss the implications of our proposed strategy for precision tests of the standard model, including a potential alleviation of the first-row CKM unitarity deficit, and motivate new experiments for charge radii measurements.
