Removal of ice and marine growth from ship surfaces: A concept

Proposed surface is structured from sections of low-melting-point alloy. Sections are separated by network of passages for compressed air. Ice or barnacles are removed by passing electrical current through alloy and bursts of compressed air through passages.

Better vacuum by removal of diffusion-pump-oil contaminants

The complex problem of why large space simulation chambers do not realize true ultimate vacuum was investigated. Some contaminating factors affecting diffusion pump performance were identified, and some advances in vacuum distillation-fractionation technology were achieved which resulted in a two-decade-or-more lower ultimate pressure. Data are presented to show the overall or individual contaminating effects of commonly used phthalate ester plasticizers of 390 to 530 molecular weight on diffusion pump performance. Methods for removing contaminants from diffusion pump silicone oil during operation and for reclaiming contaminated oil by high-vacuum molecular distillation are described. Conceptual self-cleansing designs and operating procedures are proposed for modifying large diffusion pumps into high-efficiency distillation devices. The potential exists for application of these technological advancements to other disciplines, such as medicine, biomedical materials, metallurgy, refining, and chemical (diffusion-enrichment) processing.

Application of vascular aquatic plants for pollution removal, energy and food production in a biological system

Vascular aquatic plants such as water hyacinths (Eichhornia crassipes) (Mart.) Solms and alligator weeds (Alternanthera philoxeroides) (Mart.) Griesb., when utilized in a controlled biological system (including a regular program of harvesting to achieve maximum growth and pollution removal efficiency), may represent a remarkably efficient and inexpensive filtration and disposal system for toxic materials and sewage released into waters near urban and industrial areas. The harvested and processed plant materials are sources of energy, fertilizer, animal feed, and human food. Such a system has industrial, municipal, and agricultural applications.

Development of spacecraft toxic gas removal agents

The development of agents suitable for removal of CO, NH3, NO2 SO2, and other spacecraft contaminants was approached. An extensive technology review was conducted, yielding a large number of potentially useful materials and/or concepts. Because the two toxic gases of greatest interest, CO and NH3, suggested the use of catalysis principles emphasis was placed on the intestigation of transition metals on various supports. Forty-three materials were prepared or obtained and 25 were tested. Gas chromatographic techniques were used to find seven candidates that effectively managed various combinations of the four toxic gases: none managed all. These candidates included six transition metal-containing preparations and a supported LiOH material. Three commercial charcoals showed some efficiency for the toxic gases and may constitute candidates for enhancement by doping with transition metals.

Removal of seeing and instrumental blur effects from astronomical scanner observations

The Phillips-Twomey method for solving simultaneous integral equations is applied to the problem of removing blur effects arising from atmospheric and instrumental sources from astronomical observations made with photoelectric area-scanning instruments. Details of the method and the effects of observational errors on the quality of the results are discussed in the context of applications to actual observations of stars and the planet Saturn.

Tests of laser metal removal for future flexible rotor balancing in engines

This paper describes recent developments in the flexible rotor balancing technology area, with particular emphasis on methods for the addition and removal of correction weights. The currently existing multiplane-multispeed balancing procedure permits one-step balancing of final shaft-bearing assemblies simultaneously in a number of planes and at a number of speeds. Temporary addition of trial weights to the rotor, and the addition or subtraction of permanent corrections, are presently performed manually in the balancing process. The addition of a computer-controlled laser device to the balancing system shows promise of eliminating direct operator contact with the rotor in the balancing process, and thus could provide a considerable increase in the precision level at a critical step in the procedure.

Tool removes brazed fittings

Device, which removes fittings from thin-walled tubing, will not accidentally bond to fitting, nor will it cause tube wall to melt. Key feature is the use of expendable split-ring heat sink insert. Technique is applicable to fitting stubs of all sizes and wall thicknesses.

Nuclear energy waste-space transportation and removal

A method for utilizing the decay heat of actinide wastes to power an electric thrust vehicle is proposed. The vehicle, launched by shuttle to earth orbit and to earth escape by a tug, obtains electrical power from the actinide waste heat by thermionic converters. The heavy gamma ray and neutron shielding which is necessary as a safety feature is removed in orbit and returned to earth for reuse. The problems associated with safety are dealt with in depth. A method for eliminating fission wastes via chemical propulsion is briefly discussed.

Isolation and removal of waste products

Methods of isolation and elimination of waste products in spacecraft cabins are described. The role of waste products in the environment, collection and transport of waste products to storage containers, or to recovery systems, preservation of waste products, and storage and removal of waste products are among the factors discussed. Regeneration of the waste products to recover water and/or oxygen, is briefly considered.

CO2 and humidity removal system for extended Shuttle missions - Equilibrium testing and performance analysis

In Shuttle orbiter cabins, lithium hydroxide (LiOH) canisters are currently planned to be used for CO2 adsorption and condensing heat exchangers for humidity control. In this paper a more effective CO2 and humidity removal method is proposed by replacing the LiOH component with HS-C adsorbent (a polyethylenimine coated acrylic ester), thus eliminating the low temperature constraints on the active thermal control system. Since the adsorption of CO2 and H2O are reversible, a double bed configuration operating cyclicly is planned to provide continuous atmospheric control. Apparatus and the experimental procedure to test the adsorption equilibrium are described and some of the indicative results, tabulated by computers, are presented with the help of exponential expressions and differential equations. By using a computer model of the Shuttle HS-C system, performance predictions are made.

Effects of one-sided heat input and removal on axially grooved heat pipe performance

The performance of an axially grooved heat pipe with one-sided heat input and removal was investigated analytically. Under zero-g condition the maximum heat transport of the pipe may decrease as much as 30% depending on the liquid slug behavior in the condenser section. In one-g environment the performance depends mainly on the fluid charge. The maximum heat transport, if over-charged, is almost equal to the value for uniform heating and cooling due to puddling effect. However, for some heater-cooler combinations the temperature drop across the heat pipe becomes very large. Computed results for tilted heat pipes compare favorably with available experimental data.

Removal of contaminant gases from an electrolytic urine pretreatment process

The effluent gas stream from an electrolytic urine pretreatment process was analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy and wet chemical methods to determine its composition. The major constituents were identified as: hydrogen, carbon dioxide, oxygen, nitrogen, water vapor, and chlorine. The trace impurities were chlorinated light hydrocarbons, and a number of other organic impurities in the low ppm range. Several methods of removing all of the undesirable gases to levels acceptable for return to a space cabin atmosphere were investigated experimentally. A subsystem concept comprised of the following sequential unit processes and operations was successfully demonstrated: (1) raw urine scrubbing, (2) silica gel sorption, (3) dilution with cabin air, and (4) catalytic oxidation.

Simple tool removes IC flat packs

Handtool has bifurcated handle that can be tightened so that clamping head grips pack securely. Tool easily removes hybrid integrated-ciruit flat packs from printed-wiring boards. It does not damage circuit or board; thus, board can be reused with replacement circuit, and old circuit can be analyzed for faults and, if possible, repaired.
