On-line parameter estimation using a high sensitivity estimator

An on-line parameter identification method is presented. The method is based on a recursive formulation of the maximum likelihood method, with a significant modification on the gains of the state estimator. In the conventional maximum likelihood method, the Kalman gains are used in the state estimator. This produces unbiased, minimum variance parameter estimates in the presence of process noise and measurement noise, but it also slows the convergence rate when the identification is done on-line. Here we suggest choosing the gains to maximize a measure of the sensitivities of the state estimates to parameter variations. One such criterion is to minimize the trace of the inverse information matrix. This increases the convergence rate significantly. After one or two time constants, the gains are switched to the Kalman values to assure unbiased, minimum-variance estimates. The state estimate will initially be nonoptimal, and may not be adequate for control purposes. In this case, a parallel Kalman filter which uses the identifier's parameter estimates can be used. This method is applied here for the identification of a simple first-order system, and for the identification of short-period stability derivatives of an F-8 aircraft from simulated data.

Digital filter structures having low errors and simple hardware implementation

Sensitivity and roundoff errors can seriously limit the application of recursive digital filters in practice, particularly when the filters have poles near z = + 1. A filter structure, based on digital incremental computers is proposed, which has low sensitivity, good error characteristics, and simple hardware implementation for pole locations close to z = + 1. Expressions for the roundoff errors are derived and compared to those for conventional structures. A design procedure is suggested to implement the new filter structure given the transfer function. Simulation results are presented.

Application of semianalytical satellite theories to precision orbit determination

Those factors which limit the usefulness of current implementations of the semianalytical approach are discussed. Numerical and analytical enhancements to the semianalytical approach are considered. A simple mathematical model is provided to estimate the computational speed of a semianalytical theory employing the suggested enhancements. The model can factor in current experience with semianalytical theories (integration stepsizes, quadrature orders, speed of recursive formulations, etc.) and the characteristics of the particular output requirement (observation span (or orbit determination interval), observation rate, observation model, etc.). Comparisons with numerical integration are suggested.

On-board orbit determination for application satellites

A proposal for onboard orbit determination which would rely entirely on reference Doppler beacons located within the Continental United States is presented. Algorithms were conceived which were compatible with small computing machines and sufficiently accurate to maintain an adequate satellite ephemeris. An on board computer equipped with a recursive filter with a fading memory to account for dynamic modeling errors and two reference beacons was found to be necessary for the system to work.

Efficient feature subset selection with probabilistic distance criteria

Recursive expressions are derived for efficiently computing the commonly used probabilistic distance measures as a change in the criteria both when a feature is added to and when a feature is deleted from the current feature subset. A combinatorial algorithm for generating all possible r feature combinations from a given set of s features in (s/r) steps with a change of a single feature at each step is presented. These expressions can also be used for both forward and backward sequential feature selection.

An Analytical Satellite Orbit Predictor (ASOP)

The documentation and user's guide are presented for the analytical satellite orbit predictor computer program which is intended to be used for computation of near-earth orbits including those of the shuttle orbiter and its payloads. The Poincare-Similar elements used make it possible to compute near-earth orbits to within an accuracy of a few meters. Recursive equations are used instead of complicated formulas. Execution time is on the order of a few milliseconds.

A structure suitable for implementing digital filters with poles near z = +1

Errors limiting the application of recursive digital filters which have poles near z = +1 are considered, and a filter structure for pole locations close to z = +1 is proposed. The filter structure, based on digital incremental computers, has low sensitivity and good error characteristics for pole locations near z = +1. Expressions for the roundoff error are derived, and errors associated with the proposed structure and a conventional structure are compared. A design procedure is suggested for implementing the new filter structure when the transfer function is given. Simulation results are presented.

An approach to eliminate roundoff errors in digital filters

'Second-order quantizers' are introduced which can be used for implementing recursive digital filters with practically no roundoff errors or limit-cycle oscillations. Based on the idea of changing the transfer function used to compute roundoff errors, these quantizers save the low-order bits to correct the product at future iterations. For several pole locations, this can be done with a minimal amount of extra hardware.

On-board orbit determination for applications satellites

An algorithm for satellite orbit determination is described which would be suitable for use with an on-board computer with limited core storage. The proposed filter is recursive on a pass-by-pass basis and features a fading memory to account for the effect of gravity field error. Only a single pass of Doppler data needs to be stored at any time and the data may be acquired from two reference beacons located within the Continental United States. The results of both simulated data and real data reductions demonstrate that the satellite's position can be determined to within one kilometer when a 4 x 4 recovery field is used.

Accurate numerical evaluation of modified Struve functions occurring in unsteady aerodynamics

A method is developed for computing the modified Struve functions that occur in unsteady aerodynamics. The method uses a rational approximation supplemented by an asymptotic series for large argument. Simple recursive formulas for generating the coefficients are derived. The method is capable of generating results of arbitrary accuracy. It can also be used for complex argument and order. For greater computing speed, a method is presented that uses the rational and asymptotic approximations to generate Chebyshev coefficients.

Applications of estimation theory to inverse problems in meteorology

The paper applies iterated and non-iterated extended Kalman filters to solve two practical meteorological inversion problems. Passive microwave satellite soundings are used to infer vertical temperature profiles and cloud parameters. In both cases it is shown that improvements can be obtained over presently used techniques. Finally, the results suggest that modern multivariate nonlinear recursive estimation techniques based in a Bayesian methodology can be a valuable tool in the area of remote sounding of atmospheric parameters.

The utilization of abelian point group symmetry in the graphical unitary group approach to the calculation of correlated electronic wavefunctions

A procedure is described for the utilization of abelian point group symmetry in the graphical unitary group approach (GUGA) to calculations of correlated electronic wavefunctions. The procedure is based on a recursively computed set of symmetry dependent counting indices, and results in the separate numbering, without gaps, of the Gelfand states (configuration functions) belonging to each symmetry species

Analysis and testing of numerical formulas for the initial value problem

Three computer programs for evaluating and testing numerical integration formulas used with fixed stepsize programs to solve initial value systems of ordinary differential equations are described. A program written in PASCAL SERIES, takes as input the differential equations and produces a FORTRAN subroutine for the derivatives of the system and for computing the actual solution through recursive power series techniques. Both of these are used by STAN, a FORTRAN program that interactively displays a discrete analog of the Liapunov stability region of any two dimensional subspace of the system. The derivatives may be used by CLMP, a FORTRAN program, to test the fixed stepsize formula against a good numerical result and interactively display the solutions.

Computer simulation of random variables and vectors with arbitrary probability distribution laws

Assume that there is given an arbitrary n-dimensional probability distribution F. A recursive construction is found for a sequence of functions x sub 1 = f sub 1 (U sub 1, ..., U sub n), ..., x sub n = f sub n (U sub 1, ..., U sub n) such that if U sub 1, ..., U sub n are independent random variables having uniform distribution over the open interval (0,1), then the joint distribution of the variables x sub 1, ..., x sub n coincides with the distribution F. Since uniform independent random variables can be well simulated by means of a computer, this result allows one to simulate arbitrary n-random variables if their joint probability distribution is known.

Sequential decision making and stochastic networks

To solve the problems inherent in working with sequential decision processes, it is proposed to (1) utilize concepts of dominance through bounding in the decision processes (DP) formalism to reduce the amount of computing required. This advocates the marrying of DP recursion and Branch-and-Bound methodology; and (2) relax the requirement of strict optimality in the search over the state space, and be content with a tolerable error.

Electromagnetic cascades in pulsars

The development of pair photon cascades initiated by high energy electrons above a pulsar polar cap is simulated numerically. The calculation uses the energy of the primary electron, the magnetic field strength, and the period of rotation as parameters and follows the curvature radiation emitted by the primary, the conversion of this radiation e(+) - e(-) pairs in the intense fields, and the quantized synchrotron radiation by the secondary pairs. A recursive technique allows the tracing of an indefinite number of generations using a Monte Carlo method. Gamma ray and pair spectra are calculated for cascades in different parts of the polar cap and with different acceleration models. It is found that synchrotron radiation from secondary pairs makes an important contribution to the gamma ray spectrum above 25 MeV, and that the final gamma ray and pair spectra are insensitive to the height of the accelerating region, as long as the acceleration of the primary electrons is not limited by radiation reaction.

A note on a Lagrangian formulation for motion about the collinear points

A Lagrangian formulation for the three-dimensional motion of a satellite in the vicinity of the collinear points of the circular-restricted problem is reconsidered. It is shown that the influence of the primaries can be expressed in the form of two third-body disturbing functions. By use of this approach, the equations for the Lagrangian and for the motion itself are readily developed into highly compact expressions. All orders of the non-linear developments are shown to be easily obtainable using well-known recursive relationships. The resulting forms for these equations are well suited for use in the initial phase of canonical or non-canonical investigations.

Source detection for the infrared astronomical satellite

A recursive algorithm is described which detects and characterizes point sources and extended sources in the data obtained from the Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS) in the presence of non-stationary noise. The analysis of tests using simulated data indicates that the performance of the point source detector is very close to that expected from a matched filter with stationary gaussian noise. The false alarm rate of the extended source detector tends to be higher than expected at a given SNR.
