Rovers in the U.S. Mars Exploration Program

The U.S. Mars Exploration Program comprises at least on Discovery mission (Mars Pathfinder), and Mars Surveyor Program, plus sample return missions and other missions to prepare for possible human expeditions to Mars. The original themes of the Mars Surveyor Program (which are still the official program goals) are to understand Life, Climate and Resources on Mars, with these themes tied together by the common thread of Water. The ability to move about the Martian surface is key to the Mars Exploration Program. This paper addresses the overall Mars Exploration Program strategy, with an emphasis of the role of rovers in the program. Specifically, the need for improvements in rover performance is addressed.

Mars Exploration Rover parachute decelerator system program review

In the Mars Exploration Rover (MER) Mission, NASA returns to the red planet, following the extremely successful Mars Pathfinder in 1997. The mission will send two lander-rovers to the surface of Mars with separate launches in May and June, 2003. This paper describes the Parachute Decelerator System for the entry vehicle.

Automated rover sequence report generation

A web-based rover mission operations report and its various elements are described. The system was used for documentation of the Field Integrated Development and Operations (FIDO) rover May 2000 field test and results from the field test are provided. Implementation of automated sequence report generation for the operations report is explained in detail.

Embedded Control of a Miniature Science Rover for Planetary Exploration

A rover prototype has been integrated into a package of several hundred grams in mass. Aspects of the embedded rover control and software implementation are discussed which enable mobility and operation of science instruments for navigation and surface exploration.

Integrated Thermal Control for Mars Rover

The Mars Rover has been built, environmentally tested and qualified for the 1996 launch of the Pathfinder mission to Mars. The basic structure for the thermal control for the Mars Rover is the Warm Electronics Box (WEB). This consists of a thermal isolating composite structure with co-cured thermal control surfaces and an ultralightweight hydrophobic solid silica aerogel which minimizes conduction and radiation.

(abstract) Telecommunications for Mars Rovers and Robotic Missions

Telecommunications plays a key role in all rover and robotic missions to Mars both as a conduit for command information to the mission and for scientific data from the mission. Telecommunications to the Earth may be accomplished using direct-to-Earth links via the Deep Space Network (DSN) or by relay links supported by other missions at Mars. This paper reviews current plans for missions to Mars through the 2005 launch opportunity and their capabilities in support of rover and robotic telecommunications.

Fast Optical Hazard Detection for Planetary Rovers Using Multiple Spot Laser Triangulation

A new laser-based optical sensor system that provides hazard detection for planetary rovers is presented. It is anticipated that the sensor can support safe travel at speeds up to 6cm/second for large (1m) rovers in full sunlight on Earth or Mars. The system overcomes limitations in an older design that require image differencing ot detect a laser stripe in full sun.

State estimation and vehicle localization for the FIDO Rover

This paper describes the means for generating rover localization information for NASA/JPL's FIDO rover. This is accomplished using a sensor fusion framework which combines wheel odometry with sun sensor and intertial navigation sensors to provide an integrated state estimate for the vehicle's position and oreintation relative to some fixed reference frame.

The Mars exploration rover: an in situ science mission to Mars

In this paper the concept for a mobile vehicle system which performs an in situ science mission to Mars is described. This rover mission with its requirements for driving, positioning at science selected targets, and remote and in situ measurement will utilize the technologies for hazard avoidance and autonomous navigation supported by ground operation tools which use rover-based imagery for position estimation and motion planning.
