Steering the Methane Dry Reforming Reactivity of Ni/La 2 O 3 Catalysts by Controlled In Situ Decomposition of Doped La 2 NiO 4 Precursor Structures

The influence of A- and/or B-site doping of Ruddlesden-Popper perovskite materials on the crystal structure, stability, and dry reforming of methane (DRM) reactivity of specific A 2 BO 4 phases (A = La, Ba; B = Cu, Ni) has been evaluated by a combination of catalytic experiments, in situ X-ray diffraction, X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and aberration-corrected electron microscopy. At room temperature, B-site doping of La 2 NiO 4 with Cu stabilizes the orthorhombic structure ( Fmmm ) of the perovskite, while A-site doping with Ba yields a tetragonal space group ( I 4/ mmm ). We observed the orthorhombic-to-tetragonal transformation above 170 °C for La 2 Ni 0.9 Cu 0.1 O 4 and La 2 Ni 0.8 Cu 0.2 O 4 , slightly higher than for undoped La 2 NiO 4 . Loss of oxygen in interstitial sites of the tetragonal structure causes further structure transformations for all samples before decomposition in the temperature range of 400 °C-600 °C. Controlled in situ decomposition of the parent or A/B-site doped perovskite structures in a DRM mixture (CH 4 :CO 2 = 1:1) in all cases yields an active phase consisting of exsolved nanocrystalline metallic Ni particles in contact with hexagonal La 2 O 3 and a mixture of (oxy)carbonate phases (hexagonal and monoclinic La 2 O 2 CO 3 , BaCO 3 ). Differences in the catalytic activity evolve because of (i) the in situ formation of Ni-Cu alloy phases (in a composition of >7:1 = Ni:Cu) for La 2 Ni 0.9 Cu 0.1 O 4 , La 2 Ni 0.8 Cu 0.2 O 4 , and La 1.8 Ba 0.2 Ni 0.9 Cu 0.1 O 4 , (ii) the resulting Ni particle size and amount of exsolved Ni, and (iii) the inherently different reactivity of the present (oxy)carbonate species. Based on the onset temperature of catalytic DRM activity, the latter decreases in the order of La 2 Ni 0.9 Cu 0.1 O 4 ~ La 2 Ni 0.8 Cu 0.2 O 4 ≥ La 1.8 Ba 0.2 Ni 0.9 Cu 0.1 O 4 > La 2 NiO 4 > La 1.8 Ba 0.2 NiO 4 . Simple A-site doped La 1.8 Ba 0.2 NiO 4 is essentially DRM inactive. The Ni particle size can be efficiently influenced by introducing Ba into the A site of the respective Ruddlesden-Popper structures, allowing us to control the Ni particle size between 10 nm and 30 nm both for simple B-site and A-site doped structures. Hence, it is possible to steer both the extent of the metal-oxide-(oxy)carbonate interface and its chemical composition and reactivity. Counteracting the limitation of the larger Ni particle size, the activity can, however, be improved by additional Cu-doping on the B-site, enhancing the carbon reactivity. Exemplified for the La 2 NiO 4 based systems, we show how the delicate antagonistic balance of doping with Cu (rendering the La 2 NiO 4 structure less stable and suppressing coking by efficiently removing surface carbon) and Ba (rendering the La 2 NiO 4 structure more stable and forming unreactive surface or interfacial carbonates) can be used to tailor prospective DRM-active catalysts.

Sliceable, Moldable, and Highly Conductive Electrolytes for All-Solid-State Batteries

All-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) require solid electrolytes with high ionic conductivity, stability, and deformability for optimal energy and power density. Here, we developed lithium-deficient lithium yttrium bromide (LYB) solid electrolytes, Li 3–x YBr 6–x (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.50), using a comelting method with controlled lithium deficiency. These electrolytes exhibit favorable mechanical properties such as high moldability and sliceability. The Li 2.65 YBr 5.65 composition has an ionic conductivity of 4.49 mS cm –1 at 25 °C and an activation energy of 0.28 eV. Compared to Li 3 YBr 6 , Li 2.65 YBr 5.65 demonstrates improved rate performance and cycling stability in ASSBs. High-resolution X-ray diffraction confirms the formation of the LYB phase with a C2/m space group. Structural analysis reveals increased cation disorder and larger polyhedral volumes for x > 0 in Li 3–x YBr 6–x , contributing to reduced Li + migration energy barriers. Bond valence site energy calculations and molecular dynamics simulations reveal enhanced 3D lithium-ion transport. NMR spectroscopy further highlights increased Li + dynamics and impurity elimination.

Impact of Mg Substitution on the Structure, Stability, and Properties of the Na 2 Fe 2 F 7 Weberite Cathode

Of the few weberite-type Na-ion cathodes explored to date, Na 2 Fe 2 F 7 exhibits the best performance, with capacities up to 184 mAh/g and energy densities up to 550 Wh/kg reported for this material. However, the development of robust structure–property relationships for this material is complicated by its tendency to form as a mixture of metastable polymorphs, and transform to a lower-energy Na y FeF 3 perovskite compound during electrochemical cycling. Our first-principles-guided exploration of Fe-based weberite solid solutions with redox-inactive Mg 2+ and Al 3+ predicts an enhanced thermodynamic stability of Na 2 Mg x Fe 2–x F 7 as the Mg content is increased, and the x = 0.125 composition is selected for further exploration. We demonstrate that the monoclinic polymorph (space group C2/c) of Na 2 Fe 2 F 7 (Mg0) and of a new Mg-substituted weberite composition, Na 2 Mg 0.125 Fe 1.875 F 7 (Mg0.125), can be isolated using an optimized synthesis protocol. The impact of Mg substitution on the stability of the weberite phase during electrochemical cycling, and on the extent and rate of Na (de)intercalation, is examined. Irrespective of the Mg content, we find that the weberite phase is retained when cycling over a narrow voltage window (2.8–4.0 V vs Na/Na+). Over a wider voltage range (1.9–4.0 V), Mg0 shows steady capacity fade due to its transformation to the NayFeF3 perovskite phase, while Mg0.125 displays more reversible cycling and a reduced phase transformation. Yet, Mg incorporation also leads to kinetically limited Na extraction and a reduced overall capacity. These findings highlight the need for the continued compositional optimization of weberite cathodes to improve their structural stability while maximizing their energy density.

Realization of an Ideal Cairo Tessellation in Nickel Diazenide NiN 2 : High-Pressure Route to Pentagonal 2D Materials

Most of the studied two-dimensional (2D) materials are based on highly symmetric hexagonal structural motifs. In contrast, lower-symmetry structures may have exciting anisotropic properties leading to various applications in nanoelectronics. In this work we report the synthesis of nickel diazenide NiN 2 which possesses atomic-thick layers comprised of Ni 2 N 3 pentagons forming Cairo-type tessellation. The layers of NiN 2 are weakly bonded with the calculated exfoliation energy of 0.72 J/m 2 , which is just slightly larger than that of graphene. The compound crystallizes in the space group of the ideal Cairo tiling (P4/mbm) and possesses significant anisotropy of elastic properties. The single-layer NiN 2 is a direct-band-gap semiconductor, while the bulk material is metallic. Furthermore, this indicates the promise of NiN 2 to be a precursor of a pentagonal 2D material with a tunable direct band gap.

Rational Design of a Ni 3 N 0.85 Electrocatalyst to Accelerate Polysulfide Conversion in Lithium–Sulfur Batteries

Slow kinetics of polysulfide conversion reactions lead to severe issues for lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries, for example, low rate capability, polysulfide migration, and low Coulombic efficiencies. These challenges hinder the practical applications of Li–S batteries. Here, we proposed a rational strategy of tuning the d-band of catalysts to accelerate the conversion of polysulfides. Nitrogen vacancies were engineered in hexagonal Ni 3 N (space group P 6 3 22) to tune its d-band center, leading to the strong interaction between polysulfides and Ni 3 N. Because of the greater electron population in the lowest occupied molecular orbital of Li 2 S 4 , the terminal S–S bonds were weakened for breaking. Temperature-dependent experiments confirm that Ni 3 N 0.85 demonstrates a much low activation energy, thereby accelerating the conversion of polysulfides. A Li–S cell using Ni 3 N 0.85 can deliver a high initial discharge capacity of 1445.9 mAh g –1 (at 0.02 C) and low decay per cycle (0.039%). The Ni 3 N 0.85 cell can also demonstrate an initial capacity of 1200.4 mAh g –1 for up to 100 cycles at a high loading of 5.2 mg cm –2 . The high efficiency of rationally designed Ni 3 N 0.85 demonstrates the effectiveness of the d-band tuning strategy to develop low-activation-energy catalysts and to promote the atomic understanding of polysulfide conversion in Li–S batteries.

Semiconducting Electrides Derived from Sodalite: A First-Principles Study

Electrides are ionic crystals, with electrons acting as anions occupying well-defined lattice sites. These exotic materials have attracted considerable attention in recent years for potential applications in catalysis, rechargeable batteries, and display technology. Among this class of materials, electride semiconductors can further expand the horizon of potential applications due to the presence of a band gap. However, there are only limited reports on semiconducting electrides, hindering the understanding of their physical and chemical properties. In recent work, we initiated an approach to derive potential electrides via selective removal of symmetric Wyckoff sites of anions from existing complex minerals. Herein, we present a follow-up effort to design semiconducting electrides from parental complex sodalites. Among four candidate compounds, we found that a cubic Ca 4 Al 6 O 12 structure with the I-43m space group symmetry exhibits perfect electron localization at the sodalite cages, with a narrow electronic band gap of 1.8 eV, making it suitable for use in photocatalysis. Analysis of the electronic structures reveals that a lower electronegativity of the surrounding cations drives greater electron localization and promotes the formation of an electride band near the Fermi level. Our work proposes an alternative approach for designing new semiconducting electrides under ambient conditions and offers guidelines for further experimental exploration.

High-quality single crystals of the colorless title compound Ba[ 99 TcO 4 ] 2 were prepared from radioactive, isotope-pure 99 TcO 2 by oxidation with H 2 O 2 in an aqueous ammonia solution and subsequent cation metathesis using an ion-exchange column. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction revealed Ba[TcO 4 ] 2 to crystallize isotopically to Ba[MnO 4 ] 2 in the orthorhombic space group Fddd with the lattice parameters a = 747.34(5) pm, b = 1244.08(7) pm, and c = 1511.23(9) pm for Z = 8. Its crystal structure features [BaO 12 ] 22- icosahedra surrounded by ten [TcO 4 ] - tetrahedra connected via two edges and eight corners. The optical properties of Ba[TcO 4 ] 2 investigated by UV-vis spectroscopy show the broad O 2- → Tc 7+ ligand-to-metal charge transfer (2p → 4d) process within these discrete [TcO 4 ]- anions at an absorption maximum of around 350 nm.

Crystal Chemistry, Band-Gap Red Shift, and Electrocatalytic Activity of Iron-Doped Gallium Oxide Ceramics

This work for the first time unfurls the fundamental mechanisms and set the stage for an approach to derive electrocatalytic activity, which is otherwise not possible, in a traditionally known wide band gap oxide material. Specifically, we report on the tunable optical properties, in terms of wide spectral selectivity and red-shifted band gap, and electrocatalytic behavior of iron (Fe) doped gallium oxide (ß-Ga 2 O 3 ) model system. X-ray diffraction (XRD) studies of sintered Ga 2-x Fe x O 3 (GFO) (0.0 ≤ x ≤ 0.3) compounds provide evidence for the Fe 3+ substitution at Ga 3+ site without any secondary phase formation. Rietveld refinement of XRD patterns reveal that the GFO compounds crystallize in monoclinic crystal symmetry with C2/m space group. The electronic structure of the GFO compounds probed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy data reveals that, at lower concentrations of Fe exhibits mixed chemical valence states (Fe 3+ , Fe 2+ ), whereas single chemical valence state (Fe 3+ ) is evident for higher Fe content (x = 0.20-0.30). The optical absorption spectra reveal a significant red shift in the optical band gap with Fe doping. The origin of the significant red shift even at low concentrations of Fe (x = 0.05) is attributed to the strong sp-d exchange interaction originated from the 3 d 5 electrons of Fe 3+ . The optical absorption edge observed at ˜450 nm with lower intensity is the characteristic of Fe doped compounds associated with Fe 3+ - Fe 3+ double excitation process. Coupled with optical band gap red shift, electrocatalytic studies of GFO compounds reveals that, interestingly, Fe doped Ga 2 O 3 compound exhibits electrocatalytic activity in contrast to intrinsic Ga 2 O 3 . Fe doped samples (GFO) demonstrated appreciable electrocatalytic activity towards the generation of H 2 through electrocatalytic water splitting. An onset potential and tafel slope of GFO compounds includes: ~900 mV, ~210 mVdec -1 (x = 0.15) and ~1036 mV, ~290 mVdec-1 (x = 0.30). The electrocatalytic activity of Fe doped Ga-oxide compounds is attributed to cumulative effect of different mechanisms such as; doping resulted new catalytic centers, enhanced conductivity and electron mobility. Hence, in this report, for the first time, we explored a new pathway; electrocatalytic behavior of Fe doped Ga 2 O 3 resulted due to Fe chemical states, red shift in optical band gap. The implications derived from this work may be applicable to a large class of compounds and further options may be available to design functional materials for electrocatalytic energy production.

Ferromagnetic Cr 4 PtGa 17 : A Half-Heusler-Type Compound with a Breathing Pyrochlore Lattice

Here, we describe the crystal structure and elementary magnetic properties of a previously unreported ternary intermetallic compound, Cr 4 PtGa 17 , which crystallizes in a rhombohedral unit cell in the noncentrosymmetric space group R3m. The crystal structure is closely related to those of XYZ half-Heusler compounds, where X, Y, and Z are reported to be single elements only, occupying three different face-centered-cubic sublattices. The new material, Cr 4 PtGa 17 , can be most straightforwardly illustrated by writing the formula as (PtGa 2 )(Cr 4 Ga 14 )Ga (X = PtGa 2 , Y = Cr 4 Ga 14 , Z = Ga); that is, the X and Y sites are occupied by clusters instead of single elements. The magnetic Cr occupies a breathing pyrochlore lattice. Ferromagnetic ordering is found below T C ~ 61 K, by both neutron diffraction and magnetometer studies, with a small, saturated moment of ~0.25 μ B /Cr observed at 2 K, making Cr 4 PtGa 17 the first ferromagnetically ordered material with a breathing pyrochlore lattice. A magnetoresistance of ~140% was observed at 2 K. DFT calculations suggest that the material has a nearly half-metallic electronic structure. The new material, Cr 4 PtGa 17 , the first realization of both a half-Heusler-type structure and a breathing pyrochlore lattice, might pave a new way to achieve novel types of half-Heusler compounds.

Structure Tuning, Strong Second Harmonic Generation Response, and High Optical Stability of the Polar Semiconductors Na 1- x K x AsQ 2

We report the mixed cation compounds Na 1-x K x AsSe 2 (x = 0.8, 0.65, 0.5) and Na 0.1 K 0.9 AsS 2 crystallize in the polar noncentrosymmetric space group Cc. The AAsQ(2) (A = alkali metals, Q = S, Se) family features one-dimensional (1D) 1 / ∞ [AQ 2 - ] chains comprising corner-sharing pyramidal AQ 3 units in which the packing of these chains is dependent on the alkali metals. The parallel 1 / ∞ [AQ(2) - ] chains interact via short As ∙∙∙Se contacts, which increase in length when the fraction of K atoms is increased. The increase in the As ∙∙∙Se interchain distance increases the band gap from 1.75 eV in γ-NaAsSe 2 to 2.01 eV in Na 0.35 K 0.65 AsSe 2 , 2.07 eV in Na 0.2 K 0.8 AsSe 2 , and 2.18 eV in Na 0.1 K 0.9 AsS 2 . The Na 1-x K x AsSe 2 (x = 0.8, 0.65) compounds melt congruently at approximately 316 °C. Wavelength-dependent second harmonic generation (SHG) measurements on powder samples of Na 1-x K x AsSe 2 (x = 0.8, 0.65, 0.5) and Na 0.1 K 0.9 AsS 2 suggest that Na 0.2 K 0.8 AsSe 2 and Na 0.1 K 0.9 AsS 2 have the highest SHG response and exhibit significantly higher laser-induced damage thresholds (LIDTs). Theoretical SHG calculations on Na 0.5 K 0.5 AsSe 2 confirm its SHG response with the highest value of d 33 = 22.5 pm/V χ 333 (2) = 45.0 pm/V). The effective nonlinearity for a randomly oriented powder is calculated to be d eff = 18.9 pm/V χ eff (2) = 37.8 pm/V), which is consistent with the experimentally obtained value of d eff = 16.5 pm/V χ eff (2) = 33.0 pm/V). Three-photon absorption is the dominant mechanism for the optical breakdown of the compounds under intense excitation at 1580 nm, with Na 0.2 K 0.8 AsSe 2 exhibiting the highest stability.

Heteroanionic Control of Exemplary Second-Harmonic Generation and Phase Matchability in 1D LiAsS 2– x Se x

The isostructural heteroanionic compounds β-LiAsS 2–x Se x (x = 0, 0.25, 1, 1.75, 2) show a positive correlation between selenium content and second-harmonic response and greatly outperform the industry standard AgGaSe 2 . These materials crystallize in the noncentrosymmetric space group Cc as one-dimensional $\frac{1}{∞}$ [AsQ 2 ] - (Q = S, Se, S/Se) chains consisting of corner-sharing AsQ3 trigonal pyramids with charge-balancing Li + atoms interspersed between the chains. LiAsS 2–x Se x melts congruently for 0 ≤ x ≤ 1.75, but when the Se content exceeds x = 1.75, crystallization is complicated by a phase transition. This behavior is attributed to the β- to α-phase transition present in LiAsSe 2 , which is observed in the Se-rich compositions. The band gap decreases with increasing Se content, starting at 1.63 eV (LiAsS 2 ) and reaching 1.06 eV (β-LiAsSe 2 ). Second-harmonic generation measurements as a function of wavelength on powder samples of β-LiAsS 2–x Se x show that these materials exhibit significantly higher nonlinearity than AgGaSe 2 (d 36 = 33 pm/V), reaching a maximum of 61.2 pm/V for LiAsS 2 . In comparison, single-crystal measurements for LiAsSSe yielded a d eff = 410 pm/V. LiAsSSe, LiAsS 0.25 Se 1.75 , and β-LiAsSe 2 show phase-matching behavior for incident wavelengths exceeding 3 μm. The laser-induced damage thresholds from two-photon absorption processes are on the same order of magnitude as AgGaSe 2 , with S-rich materials slightly outperforming AgGaSe 2 and Se-rich materials slightly underperforming AgGaSe 2 .

New Trick for an Old Dog: From Prediction to Properties of “Hidden Clathrates” Ba 2 Zn 5 As 6 and Ba 2 Zn 5 Sb 6

The zinc–antimony phase space has been heavily investigated due to the structural complexity and abundance of high-performing thermoelectric materials. Consequentially, the desire to use zinc and antimony as framework elements to encage rattling cations and achieve phonon-glass-electron-crystal-type properties has remained an enticing goal with only two alkali metal clathrates to date, Cs 8 Zn 18 Sb 28 and K 58 Zn 122 Sb 207 . Guided by Zintl electron-counting predictions, here we explored the Ba–Zn–Pn (Pn = As, Sb) phase space proximal to the expected composition of the type-I clathrate. In situ powder X-ray diffraction studies revealed two “hidden” compounds which can only be synthesized in a narrow temperature range. The ex situ synthesis and crystal growth unveiled that instead of type-I clathrates, compositionally close but structurally different new clathrate-like compounds formed, Ba 2 Zn 5 As 6 and Ba 2 Zn 5 Sb 6 . These materials crystallize in a unique structure, in the orthorhombic space group Pmna with the Wyckoff sequence i 2 h 6 gfe. Single-phase synthesis enabled the exploration of their transport properties. Rattling of the Ba cations in oversized cages manifested low thermal conductivity, which, coupled with the high Seebeck coefficients observed, are prerequisites for a promising thermoelectric material. Potential for further optimization of the thermoelectric performance by aliovalent doping was computationally analyzed.

Polymorphism in the Ruddlesden–Popper Nickelate La 3 Ni 2 O 7 : Discovery of a Hidden Phase with Distinctive Layer Stacking

We report the discovery of a novel form of Ruddlesden–Popper (RP) nickelate that stands as the first example of long-range, coherent polymorphism in this class of inorganic solids. Rather than the well-known, uniform stacking of perovskite blocks ubiquitously found in RP phases, this newly discovered polymorph of the bilayer RP phase La 3 Ni 2 O 7 adopts a novel stacking sequence in which single-layer and trilayer blocks of NiO 6 octahedra alternate in a “1313” sequence. Crystals of this new polymorph are described in space group Cmmm, although we note evidence for a competing Imam variant. Transport measurements at ambient pressure reveal metallic character with evidence of a charge density wave transition with an onset at T ≈ 134 K. In conclusion, the discovery of such polymorphism could reverberate to the expansive range of science and applications that rely on RP materials, particularly the recently reported signatures of superconductivity in bilayer La 3 Ni 2 O 7 with T c as high as 80 K above 14 GPa.

When van der Waals Met Kagome: A 2D Antimonide with a Vanadium-Kagome Network

2D materials showcase unconventional properties emerging from quantum confinement effects. In this work, a “soft chemical” route allows for the deintercalation of K + from the layered antimonide KV 6 Sb 6 , resulting in the discovery of a new metastable 2D-Kagome antimonide K 0.1(1) V 6 Sb 6 with a van der Waals gap of 3.2 Å. The structure of K 0.1(1) V 6 Sb 6 was determined via the synergistic techniques, including X-ray pair distribution function analysis, advanced transmission electron microscopy, and density functional theory calculations. The K 0.1(1) V 6 Sb 6 compound crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/m (a = 9.57(2) Å, b = 5.502(8) Å, c = 10.23(2) Å, β = 97.6(2)°, Z = 2). The [V 6 Sb 6 ] layers in K 0.1(1) V 6 Sb 6 are retained upon deintercalation and closely resemble the layers in the parent compound, yet deintercalation results in a relative shift of the adjacent [V 6 Sb 6 ] layers. The magnetic properties of the K 0.1(1) V 6 Sb 6 phase in the 2–300 K range are comparable to those of KV 6 Sb 6 and another Kagome antimonide KV 3 Sb 5 , consistent with nearly temperature-independent paramagnetism. Electronic band structure calculation suggests a nontrivial band topology with flat bands and opening of band crossing afforded by deintercalation. Transport property measurements reveal a metallic nature for K 0.1(1) V 6 Sb 6 and a low thermal conductivity of 0.6 W K –1 m –1 at 300 K. Additionally, ion exchange in KV 6 Sb 6 via a solvothermal route leads to a successful partial exchange of K + with A + (A = Na, Rb, and Cs). Here, this study highlights the tunability of the layered structure of the KV 6 Sb 6 compound, providing a rich playground for the realization of new 2D materials.

Pyrochlore NaYbO2: A Potential Quantum Spin Liquid Candidate

The search for quantum spin liquids (QSL) and chemical doping in such materials to explore superconductivity have continuously attracted intense interest. Here, we report the discovery of a potential QSL candidate, pyrochlore-lattice β-NaYbO2. Colorless and transparent NaYbO2 single crystals, layered α-NaYbO2 (∼250 μm on edge) and octahedral β-NaYbO2 (∼50 μm on edge), were grown for the first time. Synchrotron X-ray single-crystal diffraction unambiguously determined that the newfound β-NaYbO2 belongs to the three-dimensional pyrochlore structure characterized by the R3̅m space group, corroborated by synchrotron X-ray and neutron powder diffraction and pair distribution function. Magnetic measurements revealed no long-range magnetic order or spin glass behavior down to 0.4 K with a low boundary spin frustration factor of 17.5, suggesting a potential QSL ground state. Under high magnetic fields, the potential QSL state was broken and spins order. Our findings reveal that NaYbO2 is a fertile playground for studying novel quantum states.

Frustrated Magnetism in FeGe 3 O 4 with a Chiral Trillium Network

The discovery of new magnetic ground states in geometrically frustrated lattices remains a central challenge in materials science. Here, we report the synthesis, structural characterization, and frustrated magnetic properties of FeGe 3 O 4 , a newly identified compound that crystallizes in the noncentrosymmetric cubic space group P 2 1 3. In this structure, Fe atoms form an intricate double-trillium lattice with nearest-neighbor Fe−Fe distances of ∼4.2 Å, while Ge 2+ ions mediate magnetic interactions through Fe− Ge−Fe pathways. Field-dependent magnetization at 2 K shows a pronounced nonlinearity, reaching a maximum moment of 2.55(3) μ B /Fe 2+ at 70 kOe without evidence of saturation. Magnetic susceptibility, heat capacity, and neutron scattering collectively reveal the onset of short-range magnetic interactions near 5 K, with no longrange ordering detected down to 0.06 K. Specific heat measurements demonstrate strong frustration: only ∼34% of the expected magnetic entropy is recovered at 2.4 K. Taken together, these results establish FeGe 3 O 4 as a rare example of a geometrically frustrated trillium lattice magnet, offering a promising platform for exploring exotic quantum magnetic phenomena.

Mixed Nd 4+/3+ and Cluster Magnetism in Hexagonal Perovskite 12R-Ba 4 NdMn 3 O 12−γ

Hexagonal perovskite oxides with 12R stacking host well-separated face-sharing octahedral metal trimers with short metal–metal distances, leading in some cases to large degrees of magnetic frustration and cluster magnetism. Introducing magnetic ions in proximity to these trimers can influence the degree of frustration and cluster magnetism, but the extent to which the magnetism can be tuned by varying neighboring metal cations remains an open question. In this work, we test the impacts of using Nd in proximity to Mn trimers in the hexagonal perovskite 12R-Ba 4 NdMn 3 O 12−γ . Given this stoichiometry, Nd should assume the 4+ oxidation state with a spin state of S = 1, which would be the first realization of Nd 4+ in an oxide environment. Through detailed bulk magnetic, X-ray absorption spectroscopic, and powder neutron diffraction (PND) measurements, we find that Nd 4+ is realized in this material, but there is also partial reduction to Nd 3+ , which is charge-balanced by O vacancies. Magnetometry measurements indicate an antiferromagnetic ordering temperature T N ≈ 16 K, and PND measurements reveal a surprising collinear antiferromagnetic structure with magnetic space group Pc2/m (no. 10.49 in BNS notation), which has not previously been seen in this class of materials. Our results represent a comprehensive analysis of the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of 12R-Ba 4 NdMn 3 O 12−γ , showing the first observation of partial Nd 4+ in an oxide, and demonstrating that this structural class can host a broad range of magnetic structures which are not easily predicted based on compositional trends.

Observation of novel charge ordering and spin reorientation in perovskite oxide PbFeO 3

Pb M O 3 ( M = 3 d transition metals) family shows systematic variations in charge distribution and intriguing physical properties due to its delicate energy balance between Pb 6 s and transition metal 3 d orbitals. However, the detailed structure and physical properties of PbFeO 3 remain unclear. Herein, we reveal that PbFeO 3 crystallizes into an unusual 2 a p × 6 a p × 2 a p orthorhombic perovskite super unit cell with space group Cmcm . The distinctive crystal construction and valence distribution of Pb 2+ 0.5 Pb 4+ 0.5 FeO 3 lead to a long range charge ordering of the -A-B-B- type of the layers with two different oxidation states of Pb (Pb 2+ and Pb 4+ ) in them. A weak ferromagnetic transition with canted antiferromagnetic spins along the a -axis is found to occur at 600 K. In addition, decreasing the temperature causes a spin reorientation transition towards a collinear antiferromagnetic structure with spin moments along the b -axis near 418 K. Our theoretical investigations reveal that the peculiar charge ordering of Pb generates two Fe 3+ magnetic sublattices with competing anisotropic energies, giving rise to the spin reorientation at such a high critical temperature.
