Experimental investigations of a uranium plasma pertinent to a self-sustaining plasma source

The research is pertinent to the realization of a self-sustained fissioning plasma for applications such as nuclear propulsion, closed cycle MHD power generation using a plasma core reactor, and heat engines such as the nuclear piston engine, as well as the direct conversion of fission energy into optical radiation (nuclear pumped lasers). Diagnostic measurement methods and experimental devices simulating plasma core reactor conditions are discussed. Studies on the following topics are considered: (1) ballistic piston compressor (U-235); (2) high pressure uranium plasma (natural uranium); (3) sliding spark discharge (natural uranium); (4) fission fragment interaction (He-3 and U-235); and (5) nuclear pumped lasers (He-3 and U-235).

Operating features of an ion-cyclotron-wave plasma apparatus running in the RF-sustained mode

An experimental study has been made of an ion-cyclotron-wave apparatus operated in the RF-sustained mode. This is a mode in which the Stix RF coil both propagates the waves and maintains the plasma. Problems associated with this method of operation are presented. Some factors that are important to the coupling of RF power are noted. In general, the wave-propagation and wave-damping data agree with theory. Some irregularities in wave fields are observed. Maximum ion temperature is 870 eV at a density of 5 times 10 to the 12th power per cubic centimeter and RF power of 90 kW. Coupling efficiency is 70 percent.

Sustained load crack growth design data for Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy tanks containing hydrazine

Results are presented for an experimental study intended to provide sustained load crack growth (SLCG) data for Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy tanks containing MIL-P-26536 hydrazine and refined hydrazine. Fracture mechanics data on crack growth threshold for heat-treated forgings, aged and unaged welds, and aged and unaged heat-affected zones (HAZ) are presented. All tests were made on uniaxially loaded fracture mechanics specimens involving part-through cracks, and an electrical discharge machined notch was used to start the crack. Fracture mechanics design curves of crack growth threshold stress intensity versus temperature are obtained for the temperature range 40-71 C. Major conclusions are that extreme susceptibility to SLCG in hydrazine is a universal property of unaged weld metal in Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy of normal interstitial content, and that aging both weld metal and HAZ at 510 C for 4 hr after welding completely removes all susceptibility to SLCG induced by hydrazine, with less susceptibility to SLCG in refined hydrazine.

Lifetimes of fiber composites under sustained tensile loading

Results are presented for a study intended to summarize lifetime data on several fiber/epoxy composite materials subjected to sustained uniaxial tensile loading, to report preliminary results of an accelerated test method for predicting the life of simple composites, and to describe related work in progress on pressure vessels and other filament-wound structures. The lifetime performance of the tested composites was compared by plotting the percent of ultimate strength (applied fiber stress normalized with respect to fiber failure stress in a composite) versus lifetime. In terms of performance in long-term tensile applications, the tested composites are ranked in the following order: graphite/epoxy, Be wire/epoxy, Aramid/epoxy, and S-glass/epoxy. The accelerated test using temperature and stress to simulate the passage of time proves to be encouraging, at least in the case of the Aramid/epoxy composite. The potential of a statistical analysis based on Weibull distribution analyses or a power law relationship is demonstrated.

Acoustic emission testing of composite vessels under sustained loading

Acoustic emissions (AE) generated from Kevlar 49/epoxy composite pressure vessels subjected to sustained load-to-failure tests were studied. Data from two different transducer locations on the vessels were compared. It was found that AE from vessel wall-mounted transducers showed a wide variance from those for identical vessels subjected to the same pressure loading. Emissions from boss-mounted transducers did, however, yield values that were relatively consistent. It appears that the signals from the boss-mounted transducers represent an integrated average of the emissions generated by fibers fracturing during the vessel tests. The AE from boss-mounted transducers were also independent of time for vessel failure. This suggests that a similar number of fiber fractures must occur prior to initiation of vessel failure. These studies indicate a potential for developing an AE test procedure for predicting the residual service life or integrity of composite vessels.

Measurements of kinetic processes in a self-sustained discharge XeF laser

Measurements are presented for processes occurring in XeF self-sustained discharges including fluorescence, gain, and absorption at different wavelengths as a function of F2, Xe, and He partial pressures. Time-correlated oscillograms are given for the laser discharge current, metastable XeF small-signal gain at 351.1 nm, transient absorptions at 333.6 and 363.8 nm, metastable-XeF B-state sidelight emission at about 350 nm, metastable-F emission at 634.8 nm, and metastable-F emission at 731.1 nm. It is found that He atoms are necessary for the production of metastable-XeF in its lower vibrational levels and that radiative processes and He quenching are the primary mechanisms for metastable-XeF decay. For small-signal gains of as low as about 8%/cm, the transient absorption at the laser wavelength may be as large as about 1-2%/cm.

Solar sustained plasma/absorber conceptual design

A space power system concept was evaluated which uses concentrated solar energy to heat a working fluid to temperatures as high as 4000 K. The high temperature working fluid could be used for efficient electric power production in advanced thermal or magnetohydrodynamic conversion cycles. Energy absorber configurations utilizing particles or cesium vapor absorber material were investigaed. Results of detailed radiant heat transfer calculations indicated approximately 86 percent of the incident solar energy could be absorbed within a 12-cm-dia flowing stream of gas borne carbon particles. Calculated total energy absorption in the cesium vapor seeded absorber configuration ranged from 34 percent to 64 percent of the incident solar energy. Solar flux concentration ratios of between approximately 3000 and 10,000 will be required to sustain absorber temperatures in the range from 3000 K to 4000 K.

Quantitative energy extraction measurements in a photoionization-stabilized self-sustained XeF laser

Detailed time-correlated gain, fluorescence, and laser energy measurements were used to obtain quantitative data on energy extraction efficiencies for a photoionization-stabilized self-sustained XeF laser. A current pulse of 25 ns full width at half-maximum produced an 80-cu-cm XeF plasma in NF3:Xe:He gas mixtures with a maximum output energy of 80 mJ. The results show that the maximum small-signal gain and the maximum specific output energy is proportional to the NF3 content of the gas mixture. This suggests that there is an optimum fractional utilization of the NF3 molecules in the discharge. Under high-gain conditions, 30-40% of the energy stored in XeF(asterisk) can be extracted in a gain-switched pulse. The output energy represents less than 1% of the input energy.

The role of crack blunting in sustained load crack growth

Sustained load crack growth occurs in metals following critical crack extension above KIc and in aggressive environments while maintaining a constant load below KIc. In this paper, crack arrest measurements are performed on precracked, 0.0254-m thick, side-grooved WOL specimens exposed to 34.5 MN/sq m hydrogen at ambient temperature. The specimens are loaded inside a pressure vessel while in contact with the high pressure hydrogen environment. Crack growth is observed with each loading increment. The crack blunting observed in the fracture mechanics tests on 321 stainless steel is found to be similar to that produced in the 321 stainless steel tensile specimens. Rounding and branching of the crack decreases the effective stress intensity at the crack tip. It is possible, for materials in which cracks tend to blunt or branch in hydrogen, that although cracks will arrest at a relatively high stress intensity in decreasing stress intensity test, a crack may begin to grow at a lower stress intensity when loaded in hydrogen, and the crack may continue to grow when the stress intensity is continually increasing.

Self-sustained oscillations of a shock wave interacting with a boundary layer on a supercritical airfoil

A theory is proposed of the self-sustaining oscillations of a weak shock on an airfoil in steady, transonic flow. The interaction of the shock with the boundary layer on the airfoil produces displacement thickness fluctuations which convect downstream and generate sound by interaction with the trailing edge. A feedback loop is established when this sound impinges on the shock wave, resulting in the production of further fluctuations in the displacement thickness. The details are worked out for an idealized mean boundary layer velocity profile, but strong support for the basic hypotheses of the theory is provided by a comparison with recent experiments involving the generation of acoustic "tone bursts' by a supercritical airfoil section.

Longitudinal aerodynamic characteristics of a generic fighter model with a wing designed for sustained transonic maneuver conditions

A wind-tunnel investigation was made to determine the longitudinal aerodynamic characteristics of a fixed-wing generic fighter model with a wing designed for sustained transonic maneuver conditions. The airfoil sections on the wing were designed with a two-dimensional nonlinear computer code, and the root and tip section were modified with a three-dimensional code. The wing geometric characteristics were as follows: a leading-edge sweep of 45 degrees, a taper ratio of 0.2141, an aspect ratio of 3.30, and a thickness ratio of 0.044. The model was investigated at Mach numbers from 0.600 to 1.200, at Reynolds numbers, based on the model reference length, from 2,560,000 to 3,970,000, and through a model angle-of-attack range from -5 to +18 degrees.

Self-sustained strong mass transfer without Roche lobe overflow - Cygnus X-3

It is proposed that the binary evolution of Cyg X-3 is driven by a self-excited wind from a solar composition companion star sustained by radiation from a neutron star primary. Observations would then imply that the companion is a white dwarf underfilling its Roche lobe, with mass between 0.01 and 0.03 solar masses. Cyg X-3 could then be in the late stage of very low mass X-ray binary evolution expected to result in a millisecond pulsar binary similar to the eclipsing system PSR 1957 + 20.

Late evolution of very low mass X-ray binaries sustained by radiation from their primaries

The accretion-powered radiation from the X-ray pulsar system Her X-1 (McCray et al. 1982) is studied. The changes in the soft X-ray and gamma-ray flux and in the accompanying electron-positron wind are discussed. These are believed to be associated with the inward movement of the inner edge of the accretion disk corresponding to the boundary with the neutron star's corotating magnetosphere (Alfven radius). LMXB evolution which is self-sustained by secondary winds intercepting the radiation emitted near an LMXB neutron star is investigated as well.

Sustained load behavior of graphite/epoxy metal-lined pressure vessels for long-life space applications

Tests were performed on candidate graphite yarns for the overwraps to be used on the Space Station Freedom's pressure vessels. The objective was to determine the performance and ranking of these overwraps to ensure that sustained loads would not be a problem during their 30-yr life in space. Tests were conducted at high stress levels for short time periods on subscale composite bottles. The average delivered fiber stresses were determined from the measured burst pressures via SCI analysis that accounts for both geometry and the properties of the resin and yarn.
