Momentum Transfer and Cratering Phenomena Associated With the Impact of Aluminum Spheres Into Thick Aluminum Targets at Velocities to 24,000 Feet Per Second

Spheres of 2017-T4 aluminum with diameters of, 1/16, 1/8, and ½ inch were launched into semi-infinite targets of 2024-T4 and 1100-0 aluminum. The momentum transfer during impact was measured by means of a simple ballistic pendulum to which the target was attached. The ratio of target momentum to projectile momentum increased with increasing projectile velocity and with projectile diameter. Mass loss due to cratering, penetration, and crater diameter were also obtained for these experiments. It was noted that the variation of these parameters was also a function of the projectile diameter. No conclusive evidence was uncovered to explain this apparent scale effect. However, close examination of the various craters suggests that the cratering process is, in fact, different for the different size projectiles. The cause for this difference has yet to be resolved.

Shuttle on-orbit rendezvous targeting: Circular orbits

The strategy and logic used in a space shuttle on-orbit rendezvous targeting program are described. The program generates ascent targeting conditions for boost to insertion into an intermediate parking orbit, and generates on-orbit targeting and timeline bases for each maneuver to effect rendezvous with a space station. Time of launch is determined so as to eliminate any plane change, and all work was performed for a near-circular space station orbit.

Visually directed pointing as a function of target distance, direction, and available cues.

In pointing at visual targets without sight of the hand, large errors occur. There is a tendency to overreach targets, and this tendency is much greater (about 25 cm) when convergence is the only cue to distance than when there are many cues (2 to 11 cm). Angular errors of up to 10 deg also occur. These tend to be to the side opposite the sighting eye, when the favored hand is used. The variance of the pointing response with convergence alone is reduced by approximately half with the introduction of several spatial cues. These results are interpreted as indicating that, for a target within the reach of the arm and with convergence alone as a cue, the depth signal produced by the visual system corresponds to a greater distance than that produced when many cues are available. The results are also consistent with the hypothesis that perceived direction tends to approximate direction from the sighting eye.

An X-ray monitor for measurement of a titanium tritide target thickness

An X-ray device capable of measuring titanium tritide film thickness from 0.1 to 30 micrometers has been built and tested. The monitor was designed for use in a rotating target system which used thick targets and incorporated a sputtering electrode to remove depleted layers from the target surface. The thickness measurement can be done in the presence of an intense background of bremsstrahlung and characteristic titanium X-radiation. A measurement can be accomplished in situ in two hours with reasonable accuracy.

Global trajectory targeting via computer graphics

A technique is described in which the two-point boundary value problem (TPBVP) may be solved with the aid of interactive computer graphics. The particular TPBVP considered is the optimal electric propulsion space trajectory problem. An appropriate two-dimensional projection of the TPBVP mapping, or trajectory, is displayed on the computer's television screen, and a man-in-the-loop varies selected trajectory starting conditions in the fashion of a nonlinear walk until the viewed trajectory endpoint lies near a displayed target. Once global targeting is accomplished in this manner, program internal logic can easily handle local targeting to strongly solve the TPBVP.

Long life neutron generator target using deuterium pass-through structure

Target structure permits all deuterons, except the one-in-a-million that interacts with tritium atom to produce a neutron, to pass completely through target structure and be returned to vacuum system. Since tritium atoms are not displaced as in conventional targets, tritium population will remain unchanged while under deuteron bombardment.

Constant-load versus heart rate-targeted exercise - Responses of systolic intervals

Various systolic intervals were measured prior to and during heart rate-targeted bicycle ergometer exercise. There were striking similarities within each matched exercise set for Q-Im, isovolumetric contraction time, preejection period (PEP), and PEP/left ventricular ejection time (LVET). LVET was significantly shorter for rate-targeted exercise. It is concluded that either constant-load or rate-targeted bicycle ergometry may be used with the choice of method determined by the purpose of the protocol, and that systolic intervals (except LVET) should not be much altered owing to the method chosen.

Limitations on oceanographic use of beam-limited target-referenced radars

A general development is undertaken to determine the limitations on the use of beam-limited target-referenced radars in the measurement of ocean wave height. This class of radars is concerned only with the range extent of the target, not the range to the target. The nonzero range extent of a flat waveless sea and the compounding effect of pointing errors due to radar platform instability cause difficulty in measuring low wave heights and impose a maximum operating altitude on such systems. It is seen that it is impractical to obtain accurate measurements for wave heights of interest at altitudes above those used by commercial aircraft (10,000 m). Additionally, the typical ratio of dominant wavelength to significant wave height (SWH) of 30 for wind-driven gravity waves imposes an upper limit on the SWH measurable for a given altitude and beamwidth.

Synthetic aperture radar operator tactical target acquisition research

A radar target acquisition research study was conducted to access the effects of two levels of 13 radar sensor, display, and mission parameters on operator tactical target acquisition. A saturated fractional-factorial screening design was employed to examine these parameters. Data analysis computed ETA squared values for main and second-order effects for the variables tested. Ranking of the research parameters in terms of importance to system design revealed four variables (radar coverage, radar resolution/multiple looks, display resolution, and display size) accounted for 50 percent of the target acquisition probability variance.

Proprioceptive information about target location suppresses autokinesis

An experimental study of autokinesis perceived by subjects who had proprioceptive information about target locations was conducted. When subjects were permitted to grasp the target light mount, their perceptions of autokinesis were found to be fewer and of smaller magnitude than when only visual information about the target location was available. The decrease in autokinesis was correlated with an enhancement of oculomotor control.

The use of parametric cost estimating relationships for transport aircraft systems in establishing initial Design to Cost Targets

This paper provides a brief overview of Design to Cost (DTC). Problems inherent in attempting to estimate costs are discussed, along with techniques and types of models that have been developed to estimate aircraft costs. A set of cost estimating relationships that estimate the total production cost of commercial and military transport aircraft at the systems level is presented and the manner in which these equations might be used effectively in developing initial DTC targets is indicated. The principal point made in this paper is that, by using a disagregated set of equations to estimate transport aircraft costs at the systems level, reasonably accurate preliminary cost estimates may be achieved. These estimates may serve directly as initial DTC targets, or adjustments may be made to the estimates obtained for some of the systems to estimate the production cost impact of alternative designs or manufacturing technologies. The relative ease by which estimates may be made with this model, the flexibility it provides by being disaggregated, and the accuracy of the estimates it provides make it a unique and useful tool in establishing initial DTC targets.

Prediction, evaluation, and specification of flying qualities by means of step target tracking

A new approach to flying qualities specification and evaluation is presented which coordinates current research in the areas of pilot ratings, pilot-aircraft modeling techniques, and simulation and flight test procedures. A time-domain pilot model is described which can model discontinuous and nonlinear pilot behavior in conjunction with completely general time-varying nonlinear aircraft models to simulate discrete maneuvers. This pilot-aircraft model is applied to an existing set of in-flight simulation data, and calculates tracking error and time-on-target statistics for step target tracking that directly relate to the reported pilot comments and ratings. Predicted step target tracking data for eighteen F-5E flight conditions are presented, and the use of the method for control system design is demonstrated using the YF-17.

A variable optical target simulator

A crucial experiment, relative to determining the ability of an imaging seeker to track a target and generate accurate terminal guidance, requires an optical device which can provide imagery that grows in size as a real-time estimate of true missile flight conditions. The basic components of an Optical Contrast TV Imaging Seeker are reviewed to establish the need for an optical target simulator. An optomechanical device called a Variable Optical Target Simulator (VOTS) which generates end game scene situations is discussed. The organization of optical components and their control for providing an image which grows in size as a linear estimate of real world situations is presented.

Preliminary evaluation of time and distance spacing cues using a cockpit displayed target

A simulator evaluation was conducted to compare time and distance selfspacing cues wherein a pilot establishes and maintains separation from a cockpit displayed target. Langley's terminal configured vehicle simulator which represents an advanced aircraft employing cathode ray tubes for primary flight displays and highly augmented flight control modes was used. Three tasks, two in trail rendezvous tasks (target straight and level and target turning) and one merge task were utilized. Three pilots flew each task twice, once with a time predictor cue and once with a distance predictor. Both time and distance spacing methods are operationally acceptable to the pilots. A slight preference was indicated by the pilots for the distance based predictor in performing rendezvous and merging tasks. Analysis of the recorded data showed the spacing performance with both predictors was essentially the same.

Signature evaluation of natural targets using high spectral resolution techniques

The concept of 'spectral signature' identification has been applied to LANDSAT and other broad-band multi-spectral scanner data to classify various materials on the earth's surface. A large amount of the spectral information available is invisible, however, to the broad-band sensors. Although the natural targets of interest in remote sensing do not exhibit fine line features such as those associated with gaseous media, there is significant information to be extracted from smoothly varying spectral reflection functions of most natural targets. Subtle variations observed recently in the high resolution 'spectral signatures' of vegetation targets, in particular, promise to open new avenues of application using higher spectral and radiometric resolution techniques. This research was accomplished using a 500-band spectroradiometer system specially adapted to rapid airborne operations

Regional price targets appropriate for advanced coal extraction

A methodology is presented for predicting coal prices in regional markets for the target time frames 1985 and 2000 that could subsequently be used to guide the development of an advanced coal extraction system. The model constructed is a supply and demand model that focuses on underground mining since the advanced technology is expected to be developed for these reserves by the target years. Coal reserve data and the cost of operating a mine are used to obtain the minimum acceptable selling price that would induce the producer to bring the mine into production. Based on this information, market supply curves can be generated. Demand by region is calculated based on an EEA methodology that emphasizes demand by electric utilities and demand by industry. The demand and supply curves are then used to obtain the price targets. The results show a growth in the size of the markets for compliance and low sulphur coal regions. A significant rise in the real price of coal is not expected even by the year 2000. The model predicts heavy reliance on mines with thick seams, larger block size and deep overburden.
