Light quark Yukawas in triboson final states

Triple heavy vector boson production, pp → VVV (V = W, Z), has recently been observed for the first time. We propose that precision measurements of this process provide an excellent probe of the first generation light quark Yukawa couplings. Modified quark interactions with the off-shell Higgs in this process lead to a rapid growth of the partonic cross sections with energy, which manifests in an enhanced p T distribution of the final state leptons and quarks. We quantify this effect and estimate the present and future 2σ sensitivity to the up, down, and strange Yukawas. In particular, we find that HL-LHC can reach $\mathscr{O}$(400) sensitivity to the down Yukawa relative to the Standard Model value, improving the current sensitivity in this process by a factor of 10, and which can be further improved to $\mathscr{O}$(30) at FCC-hh. This is competitive with and complementary to constraints from global fits and other on-shell probes of the first generation Yukawas. The triboson sensitivity at HL-LHC corresponds to probing dimension-6 SMEFT operators suppressed by an $\mathscr{O}$(1) TeV scale, similarly to other LHC Higgs probes.

The Linear Collider Facility (LCF) at CERN

In this paper we outline a proposal for a Linear Collider Facility as the next flagship project for CERN. It offers the opportunity for a timely, cost-effective and staged construction of a new collider that will be able to comprehensively map the Higgs boson's properties, including the Higgs field potential, thanks to a large span in centre-of-mass energies and polarised beams. A comprehensive programme to study the Higgs boson and its closest relatives with high precision requires data at centre-of-mass energies from the Z pole to at least 1 TeV. It should include measurements of the Higgs boson in both major production mechanisms, ee -> ZH and ee -> vvH, precision measurements of gauge boson interactions as well as of the W boson, Higgs boson and top-quark masses, measurement of the top-quark Yukawa coupling through ee ->ttH, measurement of the Higgs boson self-coupling through HH production, and precision measurements of the electroweak couplings of the top quark. In addition, ee collisions offer discovery potential for new particles complementary to HL-LHC.

Measurements of the $Z$ 0 /$γ$* cross section and transverse single spin asymmetry in 510 GeV $p$ + $p$ collisions

The differential cross section for Z 0 production, measured as a function of the boson’s transverse momentum (p T ), provides important constraints on the evolution of the transverse momentum dependent parton distribution functions (TMDs). The transverse single spin asymmetry (TSSA) of the Z 0 is sensitive to one of the polarized TMDs, the Sivers function, which is predicted to have the opposite sign in p + p → W/Z + X from that which enters in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering. In this Letter, the STAR Collaboration reports the first measurement of the Z 0 /γ* differential cross section as a function of its p T in p+p collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 510 GeV, together with the Z 0 /γ* total cross section. We also report the measurement of Z 0 /γ* TSSA in transversely polarized p+p collisions at 510 GeV.

Non-local slicing approaches for NNLO QCD in MCFM

We present the implementation of several processes at Next-to-Next-to Leading Order (NNLO) accuracy in QCD in the parton-level Monte Carlo program MCFM. The processes treated are pp → H, W ± , Z, W ± H, ZH, W ± γ, Zγ and γγ and, for the first time in the code, W + W - , W ± Z and ZZ. Decays of the unstable bosons are fully included, resulting in a flexible fully differential Monte Carlo code. The NNLO corrections have been calculated using two non-local slicing approaches, isolating the doubly unresolved region by cutting on the zero-jettiness, $\mathscr{T}_0$, or on q T , the transverse momentum of the colour singlet final-state particles. We find that for most, but not all processes the q T slicing method leads to smaller power corrections for equal computational burden.

Quantum adiabatic machine learning by zooming into a region of the energy surface

Recent work has shown that quantum annealing for machine learning, referred to as QAML, can perform comparably to state-of-the-art machine learning methods with a specific application to Higgs boson classification. Here, we propose QAML-Z, an algorithm that iteratively zooms in on a region of the energy surface by mapping the problem to a continuous space and sequentially applying quantum annealing to an augmented set of weak classifiers. Results on a programmable quantum annealer show that QAML-Z matches classical deep neural network performance at small training set sizes and reduces the performance margin between QAML and classical deep neural networks by almost 50% at large training set sizes, as measured by area under the receiver operating characteristic curve. The significant improvement of quantum annealing algorithms for machine learning and the use of a discrete quantum algorithm on a continuous optimization problem both opens a class of problems that can be solved by quantum annealers and suggests the approach in performance of near-term quantum machine learning towards classical benchmarks.

Measurements and interpretations of W ± Z production cross-sections in pp collisions at $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV with the ATLAS detector

Measurements of integrated and differential cross-sections for W ± Z production in proton-proton collisions are presented. The data collected by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider from 2015 to 2018 at a centre-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s}=13$ TeV are used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 140 fb −1 . The W ± Z candidate events are reconstructed using leptonic decay modes of the gauge bosons into electrons or muons. The integrated cross-section per lepton flavour for the production of W ± Z is measured in the detector fiducial region with a relative precision of 4%. The measured value is compared with the Standard Model prediction at a precision of up to next-to-next-to-leading-order in QCD and next-to-leading-order in electroweak. Cross-sections for W + Z and W − Z production and their ratio are presented. The W ± Z production is also measured differentially as functions of various kinematic variables, including new observables sensitive to CP-violation effects. All measurements are compared with state-of-the-art Standard Model predictions from fixed-order calculations or Monte Carlo generators based on next-to-leading-order matrix elements interfaced with parton showers. An effective field theory interpretation of the measurements is performed, considering both CP-conserving and CP-violating dimension-6 operators modifying the W ± Z production. In the absence of observed deviations from the Standard Model, limits on CP-conserving Wilson coefficients are extracted using the transverse mass of the W ± Z system. For CP-violating coefficients a machine learning approach is used to construct an observable with enhanced sensitivity to CP-violation effects.

Prospects for Charged Higgs Bosons in Natural SUSY Models at the High-Luminosity LHC

We continue our examination of prospects for the discovery of heavy Higgs bosons of natural SUSY (natSUSY) models at the high luminosity LHC (HL-LHC), this time focusing on charged Higgs bosons. In natSUSY, higgsinos are expected at the few hundred GeV scale whilst electroweak gauginos inhabit the TeV scale and the heavy Higgs bosons, H, A and H± could range up tens of TeV without jeopardizing naturalness. For TeV-scale heavy SUSY Higgs bosons H, A and H±, as currently required by LHC searches, SUSY decays into gaugino plus higgsino can dominate H± decays provided these decays are kinematically accessible. The visible decay products of higgsinos are soft making them largely invisible, whilst the gauginos decay to W, Z or h plus missing transverse energy (ET). Charged Higgs bosons are dominantly produced at LHC14 via the parton subprocess, gb→H±t. In this paper, we examine the viability of observing signatures from H±→τν, H±→tb and H±→W,Z,h+ET events produced in association with a top quark at the HL-LHC over large Standard Model (SM) backgrounds from (mainly) tt¯, tt¯V and tt¯h production (where V=W,Z). We find that the greatest reach is found via the SM H±(→τν)+t channel with a subdominant contribution from the H±(→tb)+t channel. Unlike for neutral Higgs searches, the SUSY decay modes appear to be unimportant for H± searches at the HL-LHC. We delineate regions of the mA vs. tanβ plane, mostly around mA∼ 1–2 TeV, where signals from charged Higgs bosons would serve to confirm signals of a heavy, neutral Higgs boson at the 5σ level or, alternatively, to exclude heavy Higgs bosons at the 95% confidence level at the high luminosity LHC.

Boson Fermion Nuclei Stellar Nucleosynthesis: Monograph #7

Stellar nucleosynthesis is generally described as the process by which nuclei are combined through fusion to create larger nuclei by the specific addition of nucleons, leading to a stable nucleus of a higher positive charge (Z) or nucleon number (A), or both. By contrast, the boson fermion nucleus (BFN) attributes the creation of nuclei to highly chaotic processes within a star. Under high pressure and temperature within the star, and given a certain probability of overcoming coulomb barriers, nucleons and first-period nuclear components agglomerate in a manner that rarely results in a stable nuclear structure. On a random basis, proto-nuclei are conveyed out of the star’s central agglomeration zone in an upwelling flow from within the star. As these proto-nuclei evolve to their lowest energy state, they shed nucleons and undergo radioactive decay, emerging as a stable BFN structure.

Inclusive search for highly boosted Higgs bosons decaying to bottom quark-antiquark pairs in proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s} =$ 13 TeV

A search for standard model Higgs bosons (H) produced with transverse momentum (p$_{T}$) greater than 450 GeV and decaying to bottom quark-antiquark pairs ($ \mathrm{b}\overline{\mathrm{b}} $) is performed using proton-proton collision data collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV. The data sample corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 137 fb$^{−1}$. The search is inclusive in the Higgs boson production mode. Highly Lorentz-boosted Higgs bosons decaying to $ \mathrm{b}\overline{\mathrm{b}} $ are reconstructed as single large-radius jets, and are identified using jet substructure and a dedicated b tagging technique based on a deep neural network. The method is validated with Z →$ \mathrm{b}\overline{\mathrm{b}} $ decays. For a Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV, an excess of events above the background assuming no Higgs boson production is observed with a local significance of 2.5 standard deviations (σ), while the expectation is 0.7. The corresponding signal strength and local significance with respect to the standard model expectation are μ$_{H}$ = 3.7 ± 1.2(stat)$ {}_{-0.7}^{+0.8} $(syst)$ {}_{-0.5}^{+0.8} $(theo) and 1.9 σ. Additionally, an unfolded differential cross section as a function of Higgs boson p$_{T}$ for the gluon fusion production mode is presented, assuming the other production modes occur at the expected rates.[graphic not available: see fulltext]

Higgs production in association with a dark-Z at future electron positron colliders

In recent years there have been many proposals for new electron–positron colliders, such as the circular electron–positron collider, the international linear collider, and the future circular collider in electron–positron mode. Much of the motivation for these colliders is precision measurements of the Higgs boson and searches for new electroweak states. Hence, many of these studies are focused on energies above the hZ threshold. However, there are proposals to run these colliders at the lower WW threshold and Z -pole energies. In this paper, we study a new search for Higgs physics accessible at lower energies: e + e – → hZ d , where Z d is a new light gauge boson such as a dark photon or dark- Z . Such searches can be conducted at the WW threshold, i.e. energies below the hZ threshold where exotic Higgs decays can be searched for in earnest. Additionally, due to very good angular and energy resolution at future electron–positron colliders, these searches will be sensitive to Z d masses below 1 GeV, which is lower than the current direct LHC searches. Here, we will show that at $\sqrt{s}=160$ GeV with 10 ab –1 , a search for e + e – → hZ d is sensitive to h – Z – Z d couplings of δ ~ 9 × 10 –3 and cross sections of $\sim 2-3$ ab for Z d masses below 1 GeV. The results are similar at $\sqrt{s}=240$ GeV with 5 ab –1 . These limits are better than those expected from limits on the HL-LHC limits on Higgs branching ratio into generic non-standard model final states and comparable to meson decay limits.

Type-I 2HDM under the Higgs and electroweak precision measurements

We explore the extent to which future precision measurements of the Standard Model (SM) observables at the proposed Z -factories and Higgs factories may have impacts on new physics beyond the Standard Model, as illustrated by studying the Type-I Two-Higgs-doublet model (Type-I 2HDM). We include the contributions from the heavy Higgs bosons at the tree-level and at the one-loop level in a full model-parameter space. While only small tan β region is strongly constrained at tree level, the large tan β region gets constrained at loop level due to tan β enhanced tri-Higgs couplings. We perform a multiple variable χ 2 fit with non-alignment and non-degenerate masses. We find that the allowed parameter ranges could be tightly constrained by the future Higgs precision measurements, especially for small and large values of tan β . Indirect limits on the masses of heavy Higgs bosons can be obtained, which can be complementary to the direct searches of the heavy Higgs bosons at hadron colliders. We also find that the expected accuracies at the Z -pole and at a Higgs factory are quite complementary in constraining mass splittings of heavy Higgs bosons. The typical results are | cos( β - α ) | < 0 . 05 , | Δ m Φ | < 200 GeV, and tan β ≳ 0 . 3. The reaches from CEPC, Fcc-ee and ILC are also compared, for both Higgs and Z -pole precision measurements. Comparing to the Type-II 2HDM, the 95% C.L. allowed range of cos( β - α ) is larger, especially for large values of tan β .

Impact of W and Z Production Data and Compatibility of Neutrino DIS Data in Nuclear Parton Distribution Functions

Vector boson production and neutrino deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) data are crucial for constraining the strange quark parton distribution function (PDF) and more generally for flavor decomposition in PDF extractions. We extend the nCTEQ15 nuclear PDFs (nPDFs) by adding the recent W and Z production data from the LHC in a global nPDF fit. The new nPDF set, referred to as nCTEQ15WZ, is used as a starting point for a follow-up study in which we assess the compatibility of neutrino DIS data with charged lepton DIS data. Specifically, we re-analyze neutrino DIS data from NuTeV, Chorus, and CDHSW, as well as dimuon data from CCFR and NuTeV. To scrutinize the level of compatibility, different kinematic regions of the neutrino data are investigated. Fits to the neutrino data alone and a preliminary global fit are performed and compared to nCTEQ15WZ.

A low-scale flavon model with a $ {\mathrm{\mathbb{Z}}}_N$ symmetry

We propose a model that explains the fermion mass hierarchy by the Froggatt-Nielsen mechanism with a discrete $ {\mathrm{\mathbb{Z}}}_N^F $ symmetry. As a concrete model, we study a super-symmetric model with a single flavon coupled to the minimal supersymmetric Standard Model. Flavon develops a TeV scale vacuum expectation value for realizing flavor hierarchy, an appropriate μ -term and the electroweak scale, hence the model has a low cutoff scale. We demonstrate how the flavon is successfully stabilized together with the Higgs bosons in the model. The discrete flavor symmetry $ {\mathrm{\mathbb{Z}}}_N^F $ controls not only the Standard Model fermion masses, but also the Higgs potential and a mass of the Higgsino which is a good candidate for dark matter. The hierarchy in the Higgs-flavon sector is determined in order to make the model anomaly-free and realize a stable electroweak vacuum. We show that this model can explain the fermion mass hierarchy, realistic Higgs-flavon potential and thermally produced dark matter at the same time. We discuss flavor violating processes induced by the light flavon which would be detected in future experiments.

Harmonic analysis of 2d CFT partition functions

We apply the theory of harmonic analysis on the fundamental domain of SL(2, Z) to partition functions of two-dimensional conformal field theories. We decompose the partition function of c free bosons on a Narain lattice into eigenfunctions of the Laplacian of worldsheet moduli space H/SL(2, Z), and of target space moduli space O(c, c; Z)\O(c, c; R)/O(c)×O(c). This decomposition manifests certain properties of Narain theories and ensemble averages thereof. We extend the application of spectral theory to partition functions of general two-dimensional conformal field theories, and explore its meaning in connection to AdS 3 gravity. An implication of harmonic analysis is that the local operator spectrum is fully determined by a certain subset of degeneracies.

Bosonic crystalline symmetry protected topological phases beyond the group cohomology proposal

It is demonstrated by explicit construction that three-dimensional bosonic crystalline symmetry protected topological (cSPT) phases are classified by $H^5_\phi(G; \mathbb{Z})⊕H^1_\phi(G; \mathbb{Z})$ for all 230 space groups $\textit{G}$, where $H^n_\phi(G; \mathbb{Z})$ denotes the $\textit{n}$th twisted group cohomology of $\textit{G}$ with $\mathbb{Z}$ coefficients, and $\phi$ indicates that $\textit{g ε G}$ acts nontrivially on coefficients by sending them to their inverses if $\textit{g}$ reverses space-time orientation and acts trivially otherwise. The previously known summand $H^5_\phi(G;\mathbb{Z})$ corresponds only to crystalline phases built without the $E_8$ state or its multiples on 2-cells of space. It is the crystalline analog of the “group cohomology proposal” for classifying bosonic symmetry protected topological (SPT) phases, which takes the form $H^{d + 2}_\phi(G; \mathbb{Z}) ≅ H^{d + 1}_\phi(G; \text{U}(1))$ for finite internal symmetry groups in d spatial dimensions. The new summand $H^1_\phi(G; \mathbb{Z})$ classifies possible configurations of $E_8$ states on 2-cells that can be used to build crystalline phases beyond the group cohomology proposal. The completeness of our classification and the physical meaning of $H^1_\phi(G; \mathbb{Z})$ are established through a combination of dimensional reduction, surface topological order, and explicit cellular construction. The value of $H^1_\phi(G; \mathbb{Z})$ can be easily read off from the international symbol for $\textit{G}$. In this work, our classification agrees with the prediction of the “generalized cohomology hypothesis,” which concerns the general structure of the classification of SPT phases, and therefore provides strong evidence for the validity of the said hypothesis in the realm of crystalline symmetries.

Emergent Z 2 Gauge Theories and Topological Excitations in Rydberg Atom Arrays

Strongly interacting arrays of Rydberg atoms provide versatile platforms for exploring exotic many-body phases and dynamics of correlated quantum systems. Motivated by recent experimental advances, we show that the combination of Rydberg interactions and appropriate lattice geometries naturally leads to emergent Z 2 gauge theories endowed with matter fields. Based on this mapping, we describe how Rydberg platforms could realize two distinct classes of topological Z 2 quantum spin liquids, which differ in their patterns of translational symmetry fractionalization. Additionally, we also discuss the natures of the fractionalized excitations of these Z 2 spin liquid states using both fermionic and bosonic parton theories and illustrate their rich interplay with proximate solid phases.

Codimension-2 defects and higher symmetries in (3+1)D topological phases

(3+1)D topological phases of matter can host a broad class of non-trivial topological defects of codimension-1, 2, and 3, of which the well-known point charges and flux loops are special cases. The complete algebraic structure of these defects defines a higher category, and can be viewed as an emergent higher symmetry. This plays a crucial role both in the classification of phases of matter and the possible fault-tolerant logical operations in topological quantum error-correcting codes. In this paper, we study several examples of such higher codimension defects from distinct perspectives. We mainly study a class of invertible codimension-2 topological defects, which we refer to as twist strings. We provide a number of general constructions for twist strings, in terms of gauging lower dimensional invertible phases, layer constructions, and condensation defects. We study some special examples in the context of \mathbb{Z}_2 ℤ 2 gauge theory with fermionic charges, in \mathbb{Z}_2 \times \mathbb{Z}_2 ℤ 2 × ℤ 2 gauge theory with bosonic charges, and also in non-Abelian discrete gauge theories based on dihedral ( D_n D n ) and alternating ( A_6 A 6 ) groups. The intersection between twist strings and Abelian flux loops sources Abelian point charges, which defines an H^4 H 4 cohomology class that characterizes part of an underlying 3-group symmetry of the topological order. The equations involving background gauge fields for the 3-group symmetry have been explicitly written down for various cases. We also study examples of twist strings interacting with non-Abelian flux loops (defining part of a non-invertible higher symmetry), examples of non-invertible codimension-2 defects, and examples of the interplay of codimension-2 defects with codimension-1 defects. We also find an example of geometric, not fully topological, twist strings in (3+1)D A_6 A 6 gauge theory.

Studies of new Higgs boson interactions through nonresonant $HH$ production in the $ b\overline{b}\gamma \gamma $ final state in $pp$ collisions at $ \sqrt{s} $ = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

A search for nonresonant Higgs boson pair production in the $ b\overline{b}\gamma \gamma $ final state is performed using 140 fb –1 of proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS detector at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. This analysis supersedes and expands upon the previous nonresonant ATLAS results in this final state based on the same data sample. The analysis strategy is optimised to probe anomalous values not only of the Higgs (H) boson self-coupling modifier κλ but also of the quartic HHVV (V = W, Z) coupling modifier κ 2V . No significant excess above the expected background from Standard Model processes is observed. An observed upper limit μHH < 4.0 is set at 95% confidence level on the Higgs boson pair production cross-section normalised to its Standard Model prediction. The 95% confidence intervals for the coupling modifiers are –1.4 < κ λ < 6.9 and –0.5 < κ 2V < 2.7, assuming all other Higgs boson couplings except the one under study are fixed to the Standard Model predictions. The results are interpreted in the Standard Model effective field theory and Higgs effective field theory frameworks in terms of constraints on the couplings of anomalous Higgs boson (self-)interactions.
