Data acquisition techniques for exploiting the uniqueness of the time-of-flight mass spectrometer: Application to sampling pulsed gas systems

Mass spectra are produced in most mass spectrometers by sweeping some parameter within the instrument as the sampled gases flow into the ion source. It is evident that any fluctuation in the gas during the sweep (mass scan) of the instrument causes the output spectrum to be skewed in its mass peak intensities. The time of flight mass spectrometer (TOFMS) with its fast, repetitive mode of operation produces spectra without skewing or varying instrument parameters and because all ion species are ejected from the ion source simultaneously, the spectra are inherently not skewed despite rapidly changing gas pressure or composition in the source. Methods of exploiting this feature by utilizing fast digital data acquisition systems, such as transient recorders and signal averagers which are commercially available are described. Applications of this technique are presented including TOFMS sampling of vapors produced by both pulsed and continuous laser heating of materials.

Crossed hot-wire data acquisition and reduction system

The report describes a system for rapid computerized calibration acquisition, and processing of data from a crossed hot-wire anemometer is described. Advantages of the system are its speed, minimal use of analog electronics, and improved accuracy of the resulting data. Two components of mean velocity and turbulence statistics up to third order are provided by the data reduction. Details of the hardware, calibration procedures, response equations, software, and sample results from measurements in a turbulent plane mixing layer are presented.

The design and instrumentation of the Purdue annular cascade facility with initial data acquisition and analysis

Three dimensional aerodynamic data, required to validate and/or indicate necessary refinements to inviscid and viscous analyses of the flow through turbomachine blade rows, are discussed. Instrumentation and capabilities for pressure measurement, probe insertion and traversing, and flow visualization are reviewed. Advanced measurement techniques including Laser Doppler Anemometers, are considered. Data processing is reviewed. Predictions were correlated with the experimental data. A flow visualization technique using helium filled soap bubbles was demonstrated.

High rate data acquisition from Spacelab/Shuttle

The need for high data rates from a variety of experiments on Spacelab/Shuttle produced the requirement for the Spacelab High Rate Multiplexer/Demultiplexer system. This system acquires serial digital data at asynchronous bit rates from up to sixteen experiments, two data buses, three voice links, two tape recorders, and a universal time channel. Experiment data rates may vary from 200 bps to 16 Mbps while recorded data rates range from 250 Kbps to 32 Mbps. The High Rate Multiplexer (HRM) accepts these data inputs and forms a serial PCM output at flexible rates up to 48 Mbps. This PCM output is transmitted to ground by a Ku-Band RF link via the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS) or recorded on board for delayed transmission. A complementary ground based High Rate Demultiplexer (HRDM) accepts and demultiplexes the composite PCM data at ground processing locations.

Unified Ultrasonic/Eddy-Current Data Acquisition

Imaging station for detecting cracks and flaws in solid materials developed combining both ultrasonic C-scan and eddy-current imaging. Incorporation of both techniques into one system eliminates duplication of computers and of mechanical scanners; unifies acquisition, processing, and storage of data; reduces setup time for repetitious ultrasonic and eddy-current scans; and increases efficiency of system. Same mechanical scanner used to maneuver either ultrasonic or eddy-current probe over specimen and acquire point-by-point data. For ultrasonic scanning, probe linked to ultrasonic pulser/receiver circuit card, while, for eddy-current imaging, probe linked to impedance-analyzer circuit card. Both ultrasonic and eddy-current imaging subsystems share same desktop-computer controller, containing dedicated plug-in circuit boards for each.

Accelerating data acquisition with FPGA-based edge machine learning: a case study with LCLS-II

New scientific experiments and instruments generate vast amounts of data that need to be transferred for storage or further processing, often overwhelming traditional systems. Edge machine learning (EdgeML) addresses this challenge by integrating machine learning (ML) algorithms with edge computing, enabling real-time data processing directly at the point of data generation. EdgeML is particularly beneficial for environments where immediate decisions are required, or where bandwidth and storage are limited. In this paper, we demonstrate a high-speed configurable ML model in a fully customizable EdgeML system using a field programmable gate array (FPGA). Our demonstration focuses on an angular array of electron spectrometers, referred to as the ‘CookieBox,’ developed for the Linac Coherent Light Source II project. The EdgeML system captures 51.2 Gbps from a 6.4 GS s −1 analog to digital converter and is designed to integrate data pre-processing and ML inside an FPGA. Our implementation achieves an inference latency of 0.2 µs for the ML model, and a total latency of 0.4 µs for the complete EdgeML system, which includes pre-processing, data transmission, digitization, and ML inference. The modular design of the system allows it to be adapted for other instrumentation applications requiring low-latency data processing.

An assessment of LANDSAT data acquisition history on identification and area estimation of corn and soybeans

Multitemporally registered LANDSAT MSS data from four acquisitions during the 1978 growing season were used in classification of eight sample segments in Iowa and Indiana. The results illustrate that use of LANDSAT acquisition when corn has tasseled is critical, as this is the optimum time for separation of corn and soybeans. An early season acquisition when the summer crops appear as bare soil can be beneficial in reducing the confusion between these two crops and other cover types. A subset of one visible and one infrared band from each date was found to produce results not significantly different from the use of all bands. Selection of a subset of these bands may also be feasible for multitemporal analysis.

JANNAF Rocket Engine Performance Test Data Acquisition and Interpretation Manual

Procedures recommended by the JANNAF Performance Standardization Working Group for acquisition and Interpretation of performance test data are presented. Included with the description of these procedures are recommended procedures covering the required measurements, associated instrumentation, calibration methods, and data uncertainties. In addition, criteria for the applicability of existing test data, the selection of test models, and analytical performance prediction improvement based on test results are outlined. Three sample cases using the recommended procedures are presented as an addendum under separate cover. Author

The Application of Remote Sensing Techniques to Urban Data Acquisition

The application of remote sensing techniques useful in acquiring data concerning housing quality is discussed. Conclusions reached from the investigation were: (1) Use of individuals with a higher degree of training in photointerpretation should significantly increase the percentage of successful classifications. (2) Small area classification of urban housing quality can definitely be accomplished via high resolution aerial photography. Such surveys, at the levels of accuracy demonstrated, can be of major utility in quick look surveys. (3) Survey costs should be significantly reduced.

Tracking and data relay satellite system - NASA's new spacecraft data acquisition system

This paper describes NASA's new spacecraft acquisition system provided by the Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS). Four satellites in geostationary orbit and a ground terminal will provide complete tracking, telemetry, and command service for all of NASA's orbital satellites below a 12,000 km altitude. Western Union will lease the system, operate the ground terminal and provide operational satellite control. NASA's network control center will be the focal point for scheduling user services and controlling the interface between TDRSS and the NASA communications network, project control centers, and data processing. TDRSS single access user spacecraft data systems will be designed for time shared data relay support, and reimbursement policy and rate structure for non-NASA users are being developed.
