Science opportunities using the NASA scatterometer on N-ROSS

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration scatterometer (NSCAT) is to be flown as part of the Navy Remote Ocean Sensing System (N-ROSS) scheduled for launch in 1989. The NSCAT will provide frequent accurate and high-resolution measurements of vector winds over the global oceans. NSCAT data will be applicable to a wide range of studies in oceanography, meteorology, and instrument science. The N-ROSS mission, is outlined, are described. The capabilities of the NSCAT flight instrument and an associated NASA research ground data-processing and distribution system, and representative oceanographic meteorological, and instrument science studies that may benefit from NSCAT data are surveyed.

Distributed automatic control of technological processes in conditions of weightlessness

Some problems associated with the automatic control of liquid metal and plasma systems under conditions of weightlessness are examined, with particular reference to the problem of stability of liquid equilibrium configurations. The theoretical fundamentals of automatic control of processes in electrically conducting continuous media are outlined, and means of using electromagnetic fields for simulating technological processes in a space environment are discussed.

Display system software for the integration of an ADAGE 3000 programmable display generator into the solid modeling package C.A.D. software

A software system that integrates an ADAGE 3000 Programmable Display Generator into a C.A.D. software package known as the Solid Modeling Program is described. The Solid Modeling Program (SMP) is an interactive program that is used to model complex solid object through the composition of primitive geomeentities. In addition, SMP provides extensive facilities for model editing and display. The ADAGE 3000 Programmable Display Generator (PDG) is a color, raster scan, programmable display generator with a 32-bit bit-slice, bipolar microprocessor (BPS). The modularity of the system architecture and the width and speed of the system bus allow for additional co-processors in the system. These co-processors combine to provide efficient operations on and rendering of graphics entities. The resulting software system takes advantage of the graphics capabilities of the PDG in the operation of SMP by distributing its processing modules between the host and the PDG. Initially, the target host computer was a PRIME 850, which was later substituted with a VAX-11/785. Two versions of the software system were developed, a phase 1 and a phase 2. In phase 1, the ADAGE 3000 is used as a frame buffer. In phase II, SMP was functionally partitioned and some of its functions were implemented in the ADAGE 3000 by means of ADAGE's SOLID 3000 software package.

The Earth Observing System - A multidisciplinary system for the long-term acquisition of earth science data from space

The development of the Earth Observing System (EOS) requirements is examined. An envisioned, EOS is to be NASA's multidisciplinary approach to acquisition of earth science data in the 1990s. The rationale and assumptions for the EOS are presented, together with a discussion of anticipated operations and use environments. Planned instrumentation concepts are discussed, involving a broad array of multiuse sensors operating across the electromagnetic spectrum from the ultraviolet to the microwave and including both active and passive techniques. Concepts for the near-polar orbiting observatory system, and essentially permanent man-serviced and -tended facility, are presented, along with concepts for information capture, processing and distribution and for common data-base referencing of acquired data. Milestones are indicated that are to be passed before a commitment to program execution can be made later in this decade.

Remote sensing and disaster monitoring - A review of applications in Indonesia

The role played by remote sensors on-board the Landsat and NOAA-7 satellites in monitoring and management of three catastrophic events that took place in 1982 and 1983 in Indonesia (two major volcanic eruptions and a large-scale forest fire) is assessed. The modes of operation of the satellite platforms, the types of data derived, and data availability to the users are described, and the sources of failures and delays (such as the presence of clouds, technical and computer errors, red-tape, etc.) are examined. The major drawbacks of the Landsat-supplied information for monitoring short-lived and fast-changing events were the insufficient frequency of data acquisition, delayed delivery of data, and extended times needed for data distribution and processing. Indonesia's NOAA-7 and GMS sensors, although of low spatial resolution, offered higher frequency of data collection, and profited from the existence of a local receiving station. The present value of the space-based imagery is seen mainly in the baseline assessment of the disaster-prone areas, which can assist in preparing these areas for the impending catastrophic events.

NASA's satellite relay tracking and data acquisition program

The Tracking and Data Acquisition System (TDAS) is currently being planned to support NASA missions and the Space Station and will serve as a replacement to the present Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System (TDRSS). Its operational date is currently projected for the late 1990s. Near term objectives involve the definition of a TDAS architecture, the development of functional and performance specifications and implementation of a TDRSS-to-TDAS transition plan. The present paper provides an overview of the baseline TDAS architecture and summarizes key ingredients of system and technology studies in progress. In particular, this paper addresses a summary of projected mission requirements for the TDAS era; a characterization of the space segment constellation; use of lasers, 60 GHz, and multibeam 30/20 GHz technologies; ground architecture and operational interfaces; a distributed hardware/software processing concept for more flexible and reliable interfaces, signal processing and operations. Also included is a status summary of the TDAS program plan for the 1984-1990 time frame. Finally, an overview is presented of NASA's current plans to augment the TDRSS to meet the Space Station IOC requirements in the time period 1993-2000.

Laser Pyrometer For Spot Temperature Measurements

Laser pyrometer makes temperature map by scanning measuring spot across target. Scanning laser pyrometer passively measures radiation emitted by scanned spot on target and calibrated by similar passive measurement on blackbody of known temperature. Laser beam turned on for active measurements of reflectances of target spot and reflectance standard. From measurements, temperature of target spot inferred. Pyrometer useful for non-contact measurement of temperature distributions in processing of materials.
