Delta modulation

The results are presented of a study dealing with the problems of source encoding using delta modulation. An algorithm is described which was employed in the design of an adaptive delta modulation. The algorithm is extremely inexpensive to implement and features extremely desirable characteristics such as a 40 db dynamic range and a 90 percent non-redundant word intelligibility at a bit rate of 9.6 kb/s. A new concept is presented in delta modulation design, the nth-order delta modulator. The nth order delta modulator increases the maximum SNR of a delta modulator but not its dynamic range. It is shown that a 2nd order delta modulator, which employs two delta modulators in cascade, results in a 15 db output SNR improvement over a linear delta modulator operating at 27 db. Two additional areas of research are discussed. The first area involves decomposition of voice and the second is concerned with the source encoding of video signals.

A technique for correcting transmission errors in delta modulation channels

The delta modulator is a relatively new device which has found wide application in voice encoding. Two main difficulties in using this device for video encoding and processing is that it slope overloads and 'rings' and that channel errors produce a DC level shift. An algorithm is developed which is easily implemented and which significantly reduces 'picture streaks' due to the production of DC level shifts by channel errors. The algorithm can be made adaptive whereby the insertion rate of the pulse code modulation (PCM) codeword needed for correction can be adjusted depending on the strength of the channel noise. This yields a more efficient use of bandwidth. Further, the resulting signal can still be processed further using line-to-line correlation to remove the remaining 'streaks'.

Optimal space communications techniques

The encoding of video signals using the Song Adaptive Delta Modulator (Song ADM) is discussed. The video signals are characterized as a sequence of pulses having arbitrary height and width. Although the ADM is suited to tracking signals having fast rise times, it was found that the DM algorithm (which permits an exponential rise for estimating an input step) results in a large overshoot and an underdamped response to the step. An overshoot suppression algorithm which significantly reduces the ringing while not affecting the rise time is presented along with formuli for the rise time and the settling time. Channel errors and their effect on the DM encoded bit stream were investigated.

Low speed phaselock speed control system

A motor speed control system for an electronically commutated brushless dc motor is provided which includes a phaselock loop with bidirectional torque control for locking the frequency output of a high density encoder, responsive to actual speed conditions, to a reference frequency signal, corresponding to the desired speed. The system includes a phase comparator, which produces an output in accordance with the difference in phase between the reference and encoder frequency signals, and an integrator-digital-to-analog converter unit, which converts the comparator output into an analog error signal voltage. Compensation circuitry, including a biasing means, is provided to convert the analog error signal voltage to a bidirectional error signal voltage which is utilized by an absolute value amplifier, rotational decoder, power amplifier-commutators, and an arrangement of commutation circuitry.

Short, unit-memory, Byte-oriented, binary convolutional codes having maximal free distance

It is shown that (n sub 0, k sub 0) convolutional codes with unit memory always achieve the largest free distance among all codes of the same rate k sub 0/n sub 0 and same number 2MK sub 0 of encoder states, where M is the encoder memory. A unit-memory code with maximal free distance is given at each place where this free distance exceeds that of the best code with k sub 0 and n sub 0 relatively prime, for all Mk sub 0 less than or equal to 6 and for R = 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 2/3. It is shown that the unit-memory codes are byte-oriented in such a way as to be attractive for use in concatenated coding systems.

Optimal space communication techniques

Encoding of video signals using adaptive delta modulation (DM) was investigated, along with the error correction of DM encoded signals corrupted by thermal noise. Conversion from pulse code modulation to delta modulation was studied; an expression for the signal to noise ratio of the DM signal derived was achieved by employing linear, 2-sample, interpolation between sample points. A phase locked loop using a nonlinear processor in lieu of a loop filter is discussed.

Joint pattern recognition/data compression concept for ERTS multispectral imaging

This paper describes a new technique which jointly applies clustering and source encoding concepts to obtain data compression. The cluster compression technique basically uses clustering to extract features from the measurement data set which are used to describe characteristics of the entire data set. In addition, the features may be used to approximate each individual measurement vector by forming a sequence of scalar numbers which define each measurement vector in terms of the cluster features. This sequence, called the feature map, is then efficiently represented by using source encoding concepts. A description of a practical cluster compression algorithm is given and experimental results are presented to show trade-offs and characteristics of various implementations. Examples are provided which demonstrate the application of cluster compression to multispectral image data of the Earth Resources Technology Satellite.

Communication system analysis for manned space flight

One- and two-dimensional adaptive delta modulator (ADM) algorithms are discussed and compared. Results are shown for bit rates of two bits/pixel, one bit/pixel and 0.5 bits/pixel. Pictures showing the difference between the encoded-decoded pictures and the original pictures are presented. The effect of channel errors on the reconstructed picture is illustrated. A two-dimensional ADM using interframe encoding is also presented. This system operates at the rate of two bits/pixel and produces excellent quality pictures when there is little motion. The effect of large amounts of motion on the reconstructed picture is described.

Elevation scanning laser/multi-sensor hazard detection system controller and mirror/mast speed control components

The electro-mechanical and electronic systems involved with pointing a laser beam from a roving vehicle along a desired vector are described. A rotating 8 sided mirror, driven by a phase-locked dc motor servo system, and monitored by a precision optical shaft encoder is used. This upper assembly is then rotated about an orthogonal axis to allow scanning into all 360 deg around the vehicle. This axis is also driven by a phase locked dc motor servo-system, and monitored with an optical shaft encoder. The electronics are realized in standard TTL integrated circuits with UV-erasable proms used to store desired coordinates of laser fire. Related topics such as the interface to the existing test vehicle are discussed.

A decoding procedure for the Reed-Solomon codes

A decoding procedure is described for the (n,k) t-error-correcting Reed-Solomon (RS) code, and an implementation of the (31,15) RS code for the I4-TENEX central system. This code can be used for error correction in large archival memory systems. The principal features of the decoder are a Galois field arithmetic unit implemented by microprogramming a microprocessor, and syndrome calculation by using the g(x) encoding shift register. Complete decoding of the (31,15) code is expected to take less than 500 microsecs. The syndrome calculation is performed by hardware using the encoding shift register and a modified Chien search. The error location polynomial is computed by using Lin's table, which is an interpretation of Berlekamp's iterative algorithm. The error location numbers are calculated by using the Chien search. Finally, the error values are computed by using Forney's method.
