Sensitivity of Forecast Skill to Different Objective Analysis Schemes

Numerical weather forecasts are characterized by rapidly declining skill in the first 48 to 72 h. Recent estimates of the sources of forecast error indicate that the inaccurate specification of the initial conditions contributes substantially to this error. The sensitivity of the forecast skill to the initial conditions is examined by comparing a set of real-data experiments whose initial data were obtained with two different analysis schemes. Results are presented to emphasize the importance of the objective analysis techniques used in the assimilation of observational data.

ATLAS HL-LHC Demonstrators with Data Carousel: Dataon-Demand and Tape Smart Writing

The High Luminosity upgrade to the LHC (HL-LHC) is expected to deliver scientific data at the multi-exabyte scale. To tackle this unprecedented data storage challenge, the ATLAS experiment initiated the Data Carousel project in 2018. Data Carousel is a tape-driven workflow in which bulk production campaigns with input data resident on tape are executed by staging and promptly processing a sliding window to disk buffer such that only a small fraction of inputs are pinned on disk at any one time. Put in ATLAS production before Run3, Data Carousel continues to be our focus for seeking new opportunities in disk space savings, and enhancing tape usage throughout the ATLAS Distributed Computing (ADC) environment. These efforts are highlighted by two recent ATLAS HL-LHC demonstrator projects: data-on-demand and tape smart writing. In this paper, we will discuss the recent studies and outcomes from these projects. The research was conducted together with site experts at CERN and Tier-1 centers.

Integration of Fatigue R-Curve Effects into VCCT for Durability Predictions, Part 1: Buckled Composite Single-Stringer Stiffened Panels

Composite structures have become popular in modern aircraft because they help reduce weight and increase durability. In addition, hat-stiffened panels provide the stability that the airframe skin needs. However, they can be subject to delamination in the post-buckling regime. Progressive damage analysis (PDA) methods can help predict interlaminar and intralaminar failure events. Many aircraft structures are subject to cyclic loading in the post-buckling regime. Hence, fatigue life prediction becomes essential for design and sustainment purposes. Under the NASA Advanced Composites Project (ACP), composite panels stiffened with single hat-stringers were subject to a cyclic loading sequence from a pre-buckling state to a post-buckling state. This test campaign aimed to provide damage initiation and growth data for three initial damage scenarios: nominally pristine, initial Teflon inserts representing manufacturing defects, and impact-induced damage. This work uses the Abaqus FEA Virtual Crack Closure Technique (VCCT), capabilities enhanced through a novel empirical method integrating fatigue R-curve effects (different from R-ratio) into the Paris Law via user-defined subroutine to simulate the fatigue response of the panels with single hat-stringers. The analysis predictions were within 5% of the test results using this novel method.

Bayesian estimation of crack initiation times from service data

Lockheed C-130 Hercules aircraft have during their service life been periodically inspected and growing cracks around rivet holes were recorded. This record has recently been used to determine the statistical distributions of crack initiation times and the distribution of initial crack sizes. When crack initiation times are calculated from such cracks, by backward extrapolation of the growth relation, the resulting distribution of crack initiation times will indicate a preponderance of short times to crack initiation. If however, such distributions are combined with the reliability of the inspection procedure, the statistical distribution of missed initiation times can be estimated. The method used is based on Bayes theorem which permits the calculation of the 'prior' distribution (initiation times before inspection) from a knowledge of the 'posterior' distribution (initiation times obtained from the inspection) and a 'likelihood function' (reliability of the inspection) procedure. The results indicate that during an early inspection a large percentage of initiation times will be missed and that the fraction of located initiation times increases during later inspections.

Low Yield Nuclear Monitoring Physics Experiment 1 – Integrated Data Acquisition System Design and Initial Observations

The report documents the design of the Integrated Data AcQuisition (IDAQ) system and observations recorded during the first in a series of underground chemical explosions conducted on the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) in southern Nevada. Experiments are funded as part of Low Yield Nuclear Monitoring (LYNM) research and development within the United States National Nuclear Security Administration NA-22 nuclear non-proliferation program. The series is part of the broader Physical Experiment 1 (PE1) being conducted in and around the P-tunnel facility on the NNSS. Each explosive experiment utilizes several tons of comp-B to generate signals recorded by a broad suite of instrumentation. The IDAQ serves as the backbone for all subsurface instrumentation providing precise time synchronization, remote control, data exfiltration and backup, along with recording several sensing modalities throughout the underground complex that includes ground motion, environmental conditions, and electromagnetic signals.

ARM Trajectories Data Set Value-Added Product Report

The U.S. Department of Energy Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility’s ARM Trajectories Data Set (ARMTRAJ) Value-Added Product (VAP) provides trajectory data sets initialized at ARM deployment coordinates and configured using ARM data sets. The four trajectory data sets support aerosol, cloud, and planetary boundary-layer research. Trajectory calculations use the Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) model informed by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) fifth-generation atmospheric reanalysis (ERA5) data set at its highest spatial resolution (~31 km). HYSPLIT also runs at multiple initial starting locations surrounding ARM deployments (in latitude/longitude and/or vertical coordinates), facilitating an ensemble for each sample in the data sets. The ensemble mean and variability reported in ARMTRAJ improve the fidelity and provide uncertainty estimates of trajectory coordinates, thermodynamic properties, and other output fields.

ARM Trajectories Data Set Value-Added Product Report

The U.S. Department of Energy Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) user facility’s ARM Trajectories Data Set (ARMTRAJ) Value-Added Product (VAP) provides trajectory data sets initialized at ARM deployment coordinates and configured using ARM data sets. The six trajectory data sets support aerosol, cloud, planetary boundary layer, and related research (aerosol-cloud interactions, etc.), as well as studies using ARM Aerial Facility (AAF) and tethered balloon system (TBS) measurements. Trajectory calculations use the Hybrid Single-Particle Lagrangian Integrated Trajectory (HYSPLIT) model informed by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) fifth-generation atmospheric reanalysis (ERA5) data set at its highest spatial resolution (~31 km). Dynamic and static initialization of a mesoscale model using VAS satellite data

Various mesoscale weather forecast model initialization procedures were tested in seven simulation forecasts for a 12 hr period in July 1981. Attention was given to the impacts of using as input radiosonde data, VISSR Atmospheric Sounder (VAS) data and a combination of VAS and data from a smoothed global analysis. The data were assimilated with successive correction objective analysis procedures. The model had a 60 km horizontal grid-length resolution, 14 layers in the vertical, and accounted for short- and long-wave energy in the surface energy budget but not in the atmosphere. Conventional data were used for the mass and moisture fields. The trials showed that VAS data enhanced the predictions of the temperature and mass variables, while winds were least accurately predicted when VAS data were entered in the initializations. Finally, statically initialized precipitation forecasts from radiosonde and/or VAS data exhibited equal skill.

Initial direct strike lightning data

Data waveforms of the rate of change of electric flux density obtained during two lightning strikes to an aircraft specially instrumented for lightning electromagnetic measurements are presented. The aircraft was operating in a thunderstorm environment to elicit strikes. The instrumentation system configuration, flight conditions, and strike scenario showing probable lightning path on the aircraft are described. The waveforms, which were obtained at a 10 nanosecond sample interval, indicate significant excursions of the rate of change of electric flux density occurred over few hundred nanoseconds time interval.

Applications of estimation theory to numerical weather prediction

Numerical weather prediction (NWP) is an initial value problem for a system of nonlinear partial differential equations in which the initial values are known only incompletely and inaccurately. Data at initial time can be supplemented, however, by observations of the system distributed over a time interval preceding it. Estimation theory was successful in approaching such problems for models governed by systems of ordinary differential equations and of linear PDEs. Estimation-theoretic methods for NWP are developed. A model exhibiting many features of large scale atmospheric flow important in NWP is the one governed by the shallow fluid equations. The estimation problem for a linearized formulation of these equations is studied. A finite difference version of the equations is used as a forecast model to simulate the numerical models used in NWP.

Postflight analysis of the Space Shuttle ascent air data system

An analysis of measurements recorded by the ascent air data system (AADS) located on the nose of the external tank of the Shuttle during the first flight is presented. The 30/10 deg biconic spike has five pressure ports for tracking yaw and pitch attitude, total pressure, and static pressure; comparison of AADS data with wind tunnel data allowed determination of angle of attack, angle of sideslip, Mach number, and dynamic pressure. Program goals for AADS development are reviewed, and specific design features are described. Wind tunnel test data were compared with best estimates simulations and initial flight data where possible; only wind tunnel derived Mach number predictions for time intervals 90 sec after launch are noted to deviate significantly from actual flight data.

Venus volcanism - Initial analysis from Magellan data

Magellan images confirm that volcanism is widespread and has been fundamentally important in the formation and evolution of the crust of Venus. High-resolution imaging data reveal evidence for intrusion (dike formation and cryptodomes) and extrusion (a wide range of lava flows). Also observed are thousands of small shield volcanoes, larger edifices up to several hundred kilometers in diameter, massive outpourings of lavas, and local pyroclastic deposits. Although most features are consistent with basaltic compositions, a number of large pancake-like domes are morphologically similar to rhyolite-dacite domes on earth. Flows and sinuous channels with lengths of many hundreds of kilometers suggest that extremely high effusion rates or very fluid magmas (perhaps komantiites) may be present. Volcanism is evident in various tectonic settings (coronae, linear extensional and compressional zones, mountain belts, upland rises, highland plateaus, and tesserae). Volcanic resurfacing rates appear to be low (less than 2 cu km/yr) but the significance of dike formation and intrusions, and the mode of crustal formation and loss remain to be established.

An initial analysis of the data from the Polar Orbiting Geophysical (POGS) Satellite

The Polar Orbiting Geophysical Satellite (POGS) was launched in 1990 to measure the geomagnetic field. POGS data from selected magnetically quiet days was chosen, quality checked and deleted where thought to be erroneous. A time and position correction was applied. The resulting data was fit to a degree 13 spherical harmonic model. Evaluation of the quality of the data indicates that it is sufficient for definition of the low degree (approximately less than 8) portion of the geomagnetic field. Further correction of the data time and position may improve this quality.

Dynamic pattern matcher using incomplete data

This invention relates generally to pattern matching systems, and more particularly to a method for dynamically adapting the system to enhance the effectiveness of a pattern match. Apparatus and methods for calculating the similarity between patterns are known. There is considerable interest, however, in the storage and retrieval of data, particularly, when the search is called or initiated by incomplete information. For many search algorithms, a query initiating a data search requires exact information, and the data file is searched for an exact match. Inability to find an exact match thus results in a failure of the system or method.
