On the use of marker loads and replicas for measuring growth rates for small cracks

The initiation and growth of small cracks (5-500 microns) from edge notches in 2024-T3 aluminum alloy sheets were studied under constant-amplitude loading. Two methods were used to measure crack shape and size. In the first method, striation marker bands were periodically formed along the crack front by interrupting the constant-amplitude loading by either an elevated R-ratio load sequence, or by an overload sequence. In each case the marker loading was selected so as to have minimal influence on the growth rate under the primary loading. In the second method, the surface crack length was monitored by taking surface replicas at regular intervals. The marker band techniques did not provide reliable crack length and crack shape information for cracks smaller than 2 mm. The replica technique provided accurate information for surface crack length at all crack lengths, and fracture tests on specimens with small cracks provided crack-shape information.

Observations of the reappearance of polar coronal holes and the reversal of the polar magnetic field

Observational data relating to the evolution of the polar magnetic field around sunspot maximum is examined. Particular emphasis is given to coronal hole observations performed during the last two solar maxima. Long-term averages of the latitudinal dependence of the photospheric magnetic field and the evolutionary pattern of the polar crown filaments are used to trace the poleward motion of the reversal of the large-scale field and are compared to the redevelopment of polar holes. Within the context of phenomenological models of the solar cycle, it is concluded that: (1) the process of polarity reversal and redevelopment of polar holes is discontinuous, with surges of flux of old-cycle polarity interrupting the poleward migration of new-cycle flux; (2) contrary to the Babcock (1961) hypothesis, the polar crown disappears months after the magnetic pole reversal; and (3) the observations support suggestions of a poleward meridional flow around solar maximum that cannot be accounted for by Leighton-type (1964) diffusion.

A new theory of sources of Birkeland currents

An approach to collisionless plasma shows the existence of current orthogonal to B along the low latitude boundary layer of the magnetosphere driven by electric field which is orthogonal to both B and the layer. In this case relationship P perpendicular + (sq B/8 pi) - (sq epsilon E perpendicular/8 pi) = constant holds on a line orthogonal to B and the layer, where epsilon is the dielectric constant of the plasma for electric fields orthogonal to B. Across the geomagnetic tail there flows a current in the direction of the dawn-dusk electric field, and in this case a relationship P perpendicular + (sq B/8 pi) + (sq epsilon E perpendicular/8 pi) = constant, holds along a line orthogonal to E and B. Divergence of both these currents is shown to be a source of Birkeland currents. Some of the boundary layer current is continuous with current across the tail. Electric currents of physically similar origin flow in interplanetary space, and when the magnetosphere interrupts them, additional Birkeland currents are driven.

Electrodynamics of convection in the inner magnetosphere

During the past ten years, substantial progress has been made in the development of quantitative models of convection in the magnetosphere and of the electrodynamic processes that couple that magnetosphere and ionosphere. Using a computational scheme first proposed by Vasyliunas, the convection models under consideration separate the three-dimensional problem of convection in the inner magnetosphere/ionosphere into a pair of two-dimensional problems coupled by Birkeland currents flowing between the two regions. The logic, development, and major results of the inner magnetosphere convection model are reviewed with emphasis on ionospheric and magnetospheric currents. A major theoretical result of the models has been the clarification of the relationship between the region 1/region 2 picture of field-aligned currents and the older partial ring current/tail current interruption picture of substorm dynamics.

On the use of marker loads and replicas for measuring growth rates for small cracks

The initiation and growth of small cracks (5-500 microns m) from edge notches in 2024-T3 aluminum alloy sheets were studied under constant amplitude loading. Two methods were used to measure crack shape and size. In the first method, striation marker bands were periodically formed along the crack front by interrupting the constant amplitude loading by either an elevated R-ratio load sequence, or by an overload sequence. The marker band techniques did not provide reliable crack length and crack shape information for cracks smaller than 2 mm. The replica technique provided accurate information for surface crack length at all crack lengths, and fracture tests on specimens with small cracks provided crack-shape information. Crack growth rates were plotted against the stress intensity factor ranges. The results exhibited the small crack effect, in that the small cracks grew faster than large cracks at the same stress-intensity factor range. A crack closure model was also used to analyze the growth of small cracks from small (inclusion) defects at the notch surface.

Hardware test program for evaluation of baseline range-range rate sensor concept

The baseline range/range rate sensor concept was evaluated. The Interrupted CW (ICW) mode of operation continued with emphasis on establishing the sensitivity of the video portion of the receiver was 7 dB less than the theoretical value. This departs from test results of previous implementations in which achieved sensitivity was within 1.5 to 2 dB of the theoretical value. Several potential causes of this discrepancy in performance were identified and are scheduled for further investigation. Results indicate that a cost savings in both per unit and program costs are realizable by eliminating one of the modes of operation. An acquisition (total program) cost savings of approximately 10% is projected by eliminating the CW mode of operation. The modified R/R sensor would operate in the ICW mode only and would provide coverage from initial acquisition at 12 nmi to within a few hundred feet of the OMV. If the ICW mode only were selected, then an accompanying sensor would be required to provide coverage from a few hundred feet to docking.

Hardware test program for evaluation of baseline range/range rate sensor concept

The Hardware Test Program for evaluation of the baseline range/range rate sensor concept was initiated 11 September 1984. This ninth report covers the period 12 May through 11 June 1885. A contract amendment adding a second phase has extended the Hardware Test Program through 10 December 1985. The objective of the added program phase is to establish range and range measurement accuracy and radar signature characteristics for a typical spacecraft target. Phase I of the Hardware Test Program was designed to reduce the risks associated with the Range/Range Rate (R/R) Sensor baseline design approach. These risks are associated with achieving the sensor performance required for the two modes of operation, the Interrupted CW (ICW) mode for initial acquisition and tracking to close-in ranges, and the CW mode, providing coverage during the final docking maneuver. The risks associated with these modes of operation have to do with the realization of adequate sensitivity to operate to their individual maximum ranges.

Development and evaluation of a Fault-Tolerant Multiprocessor (FTMP) computer. Volume 2: FTMP software

The software developed for the Fault-Tolerant Multiprocessor (FTMP) is described. The FTMP executive is a timer-interrupt driven dispatcher that schedules iterative tasks which run at 3.125, 12.5, and 25 Hz. Major tasks which run under the executive include system configuration control, flight control, and display. The flight control task includes autopilot and autoland functions for a jet transport aircraft. System Displays include status displays of all hardware elements (processors, memories, I/O ports, buses), failure log displays showing transient and hard faults, and an autopilot display. All software is in a higher order language (AED, an ALGOL derivative). The executive is a fully distributed general purpose executive which automatically balances the load among available processor triads. Provisions for graceful performance degradation under processing overload are an integral part of the scheduling algorithms.

The electromagnetic ram action of the plasma focus as a paradigm for the generation of cosmic rays and the gigantic jets in active galaxies

Recent measurements of the energy spectrum of the plasma-focus-generated deuteron beam yield as spectrum of the form N(E)=(approx.) E to the -2.7 for 1MeV E 13 MeV. Other measurements show that the beta 1 electron beam which is generated simultaneously with the deuteron beam is interrupted into segments of spacing 25ps and duration approximately 4ps. A stuttering-electro-magnetic-ram (ser) model of the plasma focus in proposed which is similar to Raudorf's electronic ram which produces a similar spectrum for an electron beam for 1Mev E 10MeV. It is proposed that the cosmic ray spectrum and the giganic galactic jets are both generated by ser action near the centers of active galaxies.

The Use of a Laser Doppler Velocimeter in a Standard Flammability Tube

The use of the Laser Doppler Velocimeter, (LDV), to measure the flow associated with the passage of a flame through a standard flammability limit tube (SFLT) was studied. Four major results are presented: (1) it is shown that by using standard ray tracing calculations, the displacement of the LDV volume and the fringe rotation within the experimental error of measurement can be predicted; (2) the flow velocity vector field associated with passage of an upward propagating flame in an SFLT is determined; (3) it is determined that the use of a light interruption technique to track particles is not feasible; and (4) it is shown that a 25 mW laser is adequate for LDV measurements in the Shuttle or Spacelab.

Using the Very Large Array (VLA) and other radio telescopes to perform a parasitic search for extraterrestrial intelligence (SETI)

This paper describes several attempts to utilize various radio telescopes in a manner that is termed 'parasitic', that is in a manner that does not interrupt or seriously impact the standard astronomical observing programs in progress at the radio observatories. In the extreme case, only recorded astronomical data are accessed off-line, after the fact, without any burden on the observatory at all.

Non-enzymatic template-directed synthesis on RNA random copolymers - Poly(C, U) templates

Random copolymer templates containing cytosine and uracil in ratios of 3:1 and 1:1 are used to explore the optimum conditions for efficient synthesis of guanine and adenine-containing oligonucleotides. The experimental procedure is described, including the preparation of mononucleoside 5'-phospho-2-methylimidazolides and random copolymers, the template-directed oligomerization, the removal and reintroduction of mononucleotides in interrupted reactions, the determination of oligomerization efficiency, the alkaline and enzymatic hydrolysis of reaction products, and the column chromatography. Results are presented and discussed for the dependence of adenine incorporation on the formation of short oligo(G)s, optimization of incorporation efficiencies by adjusting monomer concentrations, the characterization of oligomeric product distribution, and the regiospecificity of adenine incorporation. The prebiotic significance of the results is assessed.

The effects of epoxy shrinkage on the Advanced X-ray Astrophysics Facility Technology Mirror Assembly

A method is shown analytically which reduces the effects of epoxy shrinkage for an ultra-high precision X-ray telescope to within the system error budget. The three-dimensional shrinkage effects are discussed with reference to this telescope. The results of the analysis point to the use of an interrupted rather than continuous bond line as the best solution. Discussion of the finite element modelling techniques is included.

Acceleration of fusion in mouse palates by in vitro exposure to excess G

Palatal shelves from 13- and 14-day mouse embryos were excised and cultured in contiguous pairs. Experimental cultures were exposed to 2.6 G in a culture centrifuge; controls were in the same incubator. After 24 hours, palates were prepared for light or electron microscopy. Scoring of paraffin sections according to the stage of fusion seen in the medial epithelial edges (MEE) showed that palates exposed to excess G were in more advanced stages of fusion than were controls. Ultrastructurally, control MEE had tightly apposed cell membranes and numerous desmosomes; in centrifuged MEE, desmosomes had been removed and there was much intercellular space. Nuclear membranes were intact in control MEE, but showed marked deterioration in MEE of centrifuged palates. Few lysosomes and no necrosis were seen in control MEE; centrifuged MEE had numerous lysosomes as well as necrotic cells. Basal lamina were intact in controls, but interrupted in centrifuged palates. The results confirm the hypothesis that gravitational increases speed up the differentiative process.

SSME Seal Test Program: Test results for sawtooth pattern damper seal

Direct and transverse force coefficients for 11, sawtooth-pattern, and damper-seal configurations were examined. The designation damper seal uses a deliberately roughened stator and smooth rotor to increase the net damping force developed by a seal. The designation sawtooth-pattern refers to a stator roughness pattern. The sawtooth pattern yields axial grooves in the stator which are interrupted by spacer elements which act as flow constrictions or dams. All seals use the same smooth rotor and have the same, constant, minimum clearance. The stators examined the consequences of changes in the following design parameters: (1) axial-groove depth; (2) number of teeth: (3) number of sawtooth sections; (4) number of spacer elements; (5) dam width; (6) axially aligned sawtooth sections versus axially-staggered sawtooth sections; and (7) groove geometry. It is found that none of the sawtooth-pattern seal performs as well as the best round-hole-pattern seal. Maximum damping configurations for the sawtooth and round-hole-pattern stators have comparable stiffness performance. Several of the sawtooth pattern stators outperformed the best round-hole pattern seal.

Yielding and deformation behavior of the single crystal nickel-base superalloy PWA 1480

Interrupted tensile tests were conducted to fixed plastic strain levels in 100 ordered single crystals of the nickel based superalloy PWA 1480. Testing was done in the range of 20 to 1093 C, at strain rate of 0.5 and 50%/min. The yield strength was constant from 20 to 760 C, above which the strength dropped rapidly and became a stong function of strain rate. The high temperature data were represented very well by an Arrhenius type equation, which resulted in three distinct temperature regimes. The deformation substructures were grouped in the same three regimes, indicating that there was a fundamental relationship between the deformation mechanisms and activation energies. Models of the yielding process were considered, and it was found that no currently available model was fully applicable to this alloy. It was also demonstrated that the initial deformation mechanism (during yielding) was frequently different from that which would be inferred by examining specimens which were tested to failure.
