Outflow of chromospheric emission features from the rim of a sunspot

In viewing a 16 mm movie made from a time sequence of spectroheliograms, some of these emission features are found to move outward from the rim of the sunspot until they are eventually lost in the small plage. There are two interpretations for the streaming of the magnetic features. It is possible that kinks in the line of force propagate along a horizontal extension of the penumbral magnetic field. Alternatively, fragments of the sunspot magnetic field are carried away by the photospheric velocity field.

Thermal conductivity measurements on Mullite and Silica REI for the Space Shuttle - Complementary guarded hot plate and radical outflow measurements

The materials studied are described along with the apparatus and the experimental techniques employed. The results of the measurements involving two REI Silica materials and a Mod 1 B REI Mullite are listed in a table. Measurements were conducted at unusually high temperature differences to detect 'shine-through' radiation transparency. Photographs are presented of the high-temperature guarded hot plate assembly.

Investigations of simulated aircraft flight through thunderstorm outflows

The effects of wind shear on aircraft flying through thunderstorm gust fronts were investigated. A computer program was developed to solve the two dimensional, nonlinear equations of aircraft motion, including wind shear. The procedure described and documented accounts for spatial and temporal variations of the aircraft within the flow regime. Analysis of flight paths and control inputs necessary to maintain specified trajectories for aircraft having characteristics of DC-8, B-747, augmentor wing STOL, and DHC-6 aircraft was recorded. From the analysis an attempt was made to find criteria for reduction of the hazards associated with landing through thunderstorm gust fronts.

The Spokane flood controversy and the Martian outflow channels

The controversy over Bretz's hypothesis concerning the cataclysmic Spokane flood is discussed. Attention is directed to similarities between the Channeled Scabland of Washington and some Martian land features considered to be catastrophic flood channels. Characteristics of the enormous plexus of proglacial stream channels eroded into the loess and basalt of the Columbia Plateau in eastern Washington are described. The controversiality of the suggestion that a catastrophic flood is responsible for the Martian features is considered with respect to the Spokane flood controversy.

Flight through thunderstorm outflows

Computer simulation of aircraft landing through thunderstorm gust fronts is carried out. The two-dimensional, nonlinear equations or aircraft motion containing all wind shear terms are solved numerically. The gust front spatial wind field inputs are provided in the form of tabulated experimental data which are coupled with a computer table lookup routine to provide the required wind components and shear at any given position within an approximate 500 m by 1 km vertical plane. The aircraft is considered to enter the wind field at a specified position under trimmed conditions. Both fixed control and automatic control landings are simulated. Flight paths, as well as control inputs necessary to maintain specified trajectories, are presented and discussed for aircraft having characteristics of a DC-8, B-747, augmentor-wing STOL, and a DHC-6.

Comparisons of the hydraulics of water flows in Martian outflow channels with flows of similar scale on earth

The hydraulics of channelized water flows on Mars and the resulting sediment transport rates are calculated, and similar computations are performed for such terrestrial analogs as the Mississippi River and the catastrophic Lake Missoula floods that formed the Channeled Scabland in eastern Washington State. The morphologies of deep-sea channels formed by catastrophic turbidity currents are compared with the Martian channels, many similarities are pointed out, and the hydraulics of the various flows are compared. The results indicate that the velocities, discharges, bottom shear stresses, and sediment-transport capacity of water flows along the Martian channels would be comparable to those of the oceanic turbidity currents and the Lake Missoula floods. It is suggested that the submarine canyons from which turbidity currents originate are the terrestrial counterparts to the chaotic-terrain areas or craters that serve as sources for many of the Martian channels.

CO observations of mass outflow from the infrared star CIT 6

Results are presented for observations of CO emission from the molecular envelope surrounding the carbon star CIT 6 (IRC + 30219) made at five epochs spanning 17 months. There is no evidence for any variation in the CO line intensity on this time scale, but the intensity is much lower than that reported by previous authors. In addition, an earlier report of (C-13)O line emission cannot be confirmed, and the carbon isotope ratio C-12/C-13 is measured to be greater than 20. The shape of the CO emission line observed at all epochs can be fitted by a uniformly expanding cloud model in which the CO is optically thin except through the longest lines of sight.
