Energy consumption: Past, present, future

The energy consumption history of the United States and the changes which could occur in consumption characteristics in the next 50 years are presented. The various sources of energy are analyzed to show the limitations involved in development and utilization as a function of time available. Several scenarios were prepared to show the consumption and supply of energy under varying conditions.

Revised tables of airspeed, altitude, and Mach number presented in the International system of units

Because inception of a national program to implement the International System of Units (SI) appears to be inevitable and imminent, the tables of airspeed, altitude, and Mach number prepared by Livingston and Gracey to serve for airspeed meter and altimeter calibrations and for the conversion of flight measurements of these quantities to related parameters - Mach number, true airspeed, equivalent airspeed, etc. - have been revised to the SI. Tables of airspeed in knots are also included because of the significance of this quantity in navigation. In addition, the data in the altitude tables have been revised to the U.S. Standard Atmosphere of 1962. The latter data reflect increased knowledge of the higher atmosphere and more precise determination of basic quantities, including the redefinition of the absolute thermodynamic temperature scale by the Tenth General Conference on Weights and Measures in 1954. The U.S. Standard Atmosphere, 1962, corresponds to the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) Standard Atmosphere up to 20 kilometers (geopotential altitude). A table of conversion factors for various pressure units is presented in SI Units.

Jet aircraft emissions during cruise: Present and future

Forecasts of engine exhaust emissions that may be practicably achievable for future commercial aircraft operating at high altitude cruise conditions are compared to cruise emission for present day aircraft. The forecasts are based on: (1) knowledge of emission characteristics of combustors and augmentors; (2) combustion research in emission reduction technology, and (3) trends in projected engine designs for advanced subsonic or supersonic commercial aircraft. Recent progress that was made in the evolution of emissions reduction technology is discussed.

Evaluation of a linear washout for simulator motion cue presentation during landing approach

The comparison of a fixed-base versus a five-degree-of-freedom motion base simulation of a 737 conventional take-off and landing (CTOL) aircraft performing instrument landing system (ILS) landing approaches was used to evaluate a linear motion washout technique. The fact that the pilots felt that the addition of motion increased the pilot workload and this increase was not reflected in the objective data results, indicates that motion cues, as presented, are not a contributing factor to root-mean-square (rms) performance during the landing approach task. Subjective results from standard maneuvering about straight-and-level flight for specific motion cue evaluation revealed that the longitudinal channels (pitch and surge) possibly the yaw channel produce acceptable motions. The roll cue representation, involving both roll and sway channels, was found to be inadequate for large roll inputs, as used for example, in turn entries.

Jet aircraft emissions during cruise - Present and future

Forecasts of engine exhaust emissions that may be practicably achievable for future commercial aircraft operating at high altitude cruise conditions are compared to cruise emissions for present day aircraft. These results summarize jet aircraft emissions studies reported in the Climatic Impact Assessment Program (CIAP) Monograph 2 'Propulsion Effluents in the Stratosphere'. The forecasts are based on (1) knowledge of emission characteristics of combustors and augmentors; (2) combustion research in emission reduction technology; and (3) trends in projected engine designs for advanced subsonic or supersonic commercial aircraft. Recent progress that has been made in the evolution of emissions reduction technology will be discussed.

Thermogravimetric study of reduction of oxides present in oxidized nickel-base alloy powders

Carbon, hydrogen, and hydrogen plus carbon reduction of three oxidized nickel-base alloy powders (a solid solution strengthened alloy both with and without the gamma prime formers aluminum and titanium and the solid solution strengthened alloy NiCrAlY) were evaluated by thermogravimetry. Hydrogen and hydrogen plus carbon were completely effective in reducing an alloy containing chromium, columbium, tantalum, molybdenum, and tungsten. However, with aluminum and titanium present the reduction was limited to a weight loss of about 81 percent. Carbon alone was not effective in reducing any of the alloys, and none of the reducing conditions were effective for use with NiCrAlY.

Looking forward to the present

The present understanding of the origin of life based on Oparin's (1924) conception of life as a manifestation of matter in a special stage of its development is outlined. The results of chemical analyses of lunar samples are discussed, and their implications regarding chemical reactions beginning with carbonaceous dust are considered. Amino acids isolated from lunar samples taken from different sites show a high degree of similarity, in agreement with the hypothesis that carbon compounds, including amino acid precursors, were implanted on the lunar surface by components of the solar wind. The amino acid precursors are most likely a cyanide compound. Overlapping amino acid/carbon ratios from lunar samples and samples of meteorites suggest a common cosmochemical state of carbon in the solar system.

Angiocardiography - Past and present

Angiocardiography is defined as an X-ray procedure which uses an intravascularly injected contrast material for visualization of the internal anatomy of the heart and great vessels. Past and present efforts in angiocardiography technology and methodology are reviewed, with special emphasis on qualitative and quantitative measurements of heart and vessel geometry. One of the more recent applications of angiographic image analysis has been for pattern recognition of margin motions over a cardiac cycle, termed contourography. Angiocardiography will continue to serve, as it has served in the past, as the principal standard of reference for calibration and/or comparison of newer methods for determining volume or dimensional change, depending on further technologic advances in X-ray equipment and means for displaying computer-processed information.

Analysis and compilation of missile aerodynamic data. Volume 1: Data presentation and analysis

Most of the aerodynamic configurations considered are suitable for highly maneuverable air-to-air or surface-to-air missiles; however, data for a few air-to-surface, cruise missiles, and one projectile configuration are also presented. The Mach number range of the data is from about 0.2 to 4.63; however, data for most configurations cover only a portion of this range.

Strength and rigidity of the elastic lunar lithosphere and implications for present-day mantle convection in the moon

Lunar gravity data are used to estimate the thickness of the elastically defined lunar lithosphere, and the load-bearing capability of lithosphere with respect to lunar mascons is analyzed by representing the elastic lithosphere as a plane elastic plate subject to spatially concentrated loads from above and buoyant support from below. Gravity perturbations are computed and compared with observations, the spectrum of lunar gravity perturbations is derived, and effects of curvature are considered. The magnitude of the elastic stresses associated with a lithospheric flexure model maintaining the irregularities of the lunar gravity field is shown to be quite similar to that of the lithospheric stresses found on earth. It is concluded that associated differences in gravity, heat flow, and lithospheric thickness all combine to make the lunar lithosphere much more rigid and stronger than that of earth. Implications for present-day lunar convection are discussed.
