A turbojet-boosted two-stage-to-orbit space transportation system design study

The concept to use twin turbo-powered boosters for acceleration to supersonic staging speed followed by an all rocket powered orbiter stage was proposed. A follow-on design study was then made of the concept with the performance objective of placing a 29,483 Kg payload into a .2.6 X 195.3 km orbit. The study was performed in terms of analysis and trade studies, conceptual design, utility and economic analysis, and technology assessment. Design features of the final configuration included: strakes and area rule for improved take off and low transonic drag, variable area inlets, exits and turbine, and low profile fixed landing gear for turbojet booster stage. The payload required an estimated GLOW of 1,270,000 kg for injection in orbit. Each twin booster required afterburning turbojet engines each with a static sea level thrust rating of 444,800 N. Life cycle costs for this concept were comparable to a SSTO/SLED concept except for increased development cost due to the turbojet engine propulsion system.

Design and operating experience on the U.S. Department of Energy Experimental Mod-O 100 kW Wind Turbine

The Mod-O 100 kW Experimental Wind Turbine was designed and fabricated by NASA, as part of the Federal Wind Energy Program, to assess technology requirements and engineering problems of large wind turbines. The machine became operational in October 1975 and has demonstrated successful operation in all of its design modes. During the course of its operations the machine has generated a wealth of experimental data and has served as a prototype developmental test bed for the Mod-OA operational wind turbines which are currently used on utility networks. This paper describes the mechanical and control systems as they evolved in operational tests and describes some of the experience with various systems in the downwind rotor configuration.

Concept definition study of small Brayton cycle engines for dispersed solar electric power systems

Three first-generation Brayton cycle engine types were studied for solar application: a near-term open cycle (configuration A), a near-term closed cycle (configuration B), and a longer-term open cycle (configuration C). A parametric performance analysis was carried out to select engine designs for the three configurations. The interface requirements for the Brayton cycle engine/generator and solar receivers were determined. A technology assessment was then carried out to define production costs, durability, and growth potential for the selected engine types.

Coal liquefaction processes and development requirements analysis for synthetic fuels production

Focus of the study is on: (1) developing a technical and programmatic data base on direct and indirect liquefaction processes which have potential for commercialization during the 1980's and beyond, and (2) performing analyses to assess technology readiness and development trends, development requirements, commercial plant costs, and projected synthetic fuel costs. Numerous data sources and references were used as the basis for the analysis results and information presented.

A study of flight control requirements for advanced, winged, earth-to-orbit vehicles with far-aft center-of-gravity locations

Control requirements of Controlled Configured Design Approach vehicles with far-aft center of gravity locations are studied. The baseline system investigated is a fully reusable vertical takeoff/horizontal landing single stage-to-orbit vehicle with mission requirements similar to that of the space shuttle vehicle. Evaluations were made to determine dynamic stability boundaries, time responses, trim control, operational center-of-gravity limits, and flight control subsystem design requirements. Study tasks included a baseline vehicle analysis, an aft center of gravity study, a payload size study, and a technology assessment.

Report on the subpanel on remapping procedures

Problems associated with remapping procedures are defined and research tasks are proposed. It is noted that the remapping/rectification process could be significantly aided through engineering systems improvements in attitude control, with subsequent improvement in spacecraft ephemeris modeling accuracy. There is a need for state-of-the-art technology assessments prior to initiation of major programs, and the high potential return from well formulated testing of algorithms on selected data sets of actual and synthetic imagery. In addition, there is a need for tasks that incorporate standard photogrammetric methodology and formulas and that more fully utilize platform and calibration data from current and proposed sensors to reproject digital imagery. The impact of improved platform stability and integration of global positioning system measurements on reduced ground segment processing needs to be critically assessed. Also highlighted is the need for a substantial effort in the development of remapping software and systems that are modular and transportable.

Advanced reliability modeling of fault-tolerant computer-based systems

Two methodologies for the reliability assessment of fault tolerant digital computer based systems are discussed. The computer-aided reliability estimation 3 (CARE 3) and gate logic software simulation (GLOSS) are assessment technologies that were developed to mitigate a serious weakness in the design and evaluation process of ultrareliable digital systems. The weak link is based on the unavailability of a sufficiently powerful modeling technique for comparing the stochastic attributes of one system against others. Some of the more interesting attributes are reliability, system survival, safety, and mission success.

The OSTA-1 scientific payload - Scientific results from the second flight of the Shuttle

The qualification, operation, and results from the first Office of Science and Technology Assessment payload, flown on board the second Shuttle mission, are detailed. Among the experiments were a Shuttle Imaging Radar-A, which recorded 1000 m of 70 mm film of 50 km swaths of the earth's land and ocean surface. The multispectral IR radiometer permitted the acquisistion of 400,000 ten-channel spectral over the wavelength interval 0.5-2.35 microns, including rock and soil identifications which are correlated with economically significant geologic materials. The ocean color experiment involved an eight channel optical mechanical scanner to detect ocean water color changes due to the presence of phytoplankton. Air pollution was measured by radiometer in the 4.50-4.83 micron regions, and an asymmetry in CO concentration was found between the northern and sourthern hemispheres. Only five seconds of surface and meteorological data were collected by the FILE package, while the one successfully used film cassette on a lightning recording experiment revealed discharges among convective storm systems. A rerunning of unsuccessful experiments and new instrumentation for future Shuttle missions are indicated.

Thematic mapper data quality and performance assessment in renewable resource/agricultural remote sensing

A "quick look" investigation of the initial LANDSAT-4, thematic mapper (TM) scene received from Goddard Space Flight Center was performed to gain early insight into the characteristics of TM data. The initial scene, containing only the first four bands of the seven bands recorded by the TM, was acquired over the Detroit, Michigan, area on July 20, 1982. It yielded abundant information for scientific investigation. A wide variety of studies were conducted to assess all aspects of TM data. They ranged from manual analyses of image products to detect obvious optical, electronic, or mechanical defects to detailed machine analyses of the digital data content for evaluation of spectral separability of vegetative/nonvegetative classes. These studies were applied to several segments extracted from the full scene. No attempt was made to perform end-to-end statistical evaluations. However, the output of these studies do identify a degree of positive performance from the TM and its potential for advancing state-of-the-art crop inventory and condition assessment technology.
