Origins of life; Proceedings of the First Conference, Princeton, N.J., May 21-24, 1967.

The dialogs on the origin of life commence with the fossil record. They deal with the age of the earth; the primitive atmosphere; precambrian microfossils; the Fig Tree series of rocks, which is part of the Swaziland system; the Bitter Springs Formation in Australia; and simulated Precambrian microfossils. The syntheses of biologically important monomers, amino acids, and nucleic acid derivatives are discussed. Polymerization mechanisms; the thermal origin of amino acid polymers; nonnucleic acid information carriers; the relationship between amino acid and nucleic acid polymers; the origin of the triple code; early reciprocating systems; and the evolution of the ribosomal system receive attention. Some brief comments on extraterrestrial life are presented. An appendix deals with the geological evidence for the thermal origin of living systems.

Report of the Tape Recorder Action Plan Committee, 21 March 1972

A NASA/AF Tape Recorder Action Plan Committee was formed in January 1972 to investigate tape recorder problems and to recommend an action plan to NASA management. The committee collected data on tape recorder failure history, pinpointed problem areas, discussed needed technical and management changes, and proposed an action plan for the recommended approaches.

Space shuttle GN and C equation document no. 21: Shuttle unified navigation filter

The space shuttle navigation equations are presented in a form for a single unified navigation filter used in each mission phase. The document serves as a single reference for the navigation equations replacing each of the individual mission phase navigation documents previously published. The fundamental characteristics of the navigation filter are described. The features of the unified formulation of the filter are analyzed.

Yield and ion distribution for the barium cloud at 31,000 kilometers, September 21, 1971.

The photon flux density associated with the 4554-A resonance radiation for Ba II was measured at Mount Hopkins, Arizona, and Cerro Morado, Chile, and was determined to be 36,000 photon/sq cm sec outside the atmosphere; this measurement was made when the cloud was optically thin at 120 sec after release. Using this and a photon scattering efficiency of 0.66 photon/ion sec we estimate a 1.7-kg yield of barium ions that are formed from the initially released atomic barium and are thus associated with the main core of the cloud. Photographic and photometric data are combined to obtain preliminary values for the brightness throughout the cloud for two photographs, and isobrightness plots are presented. These plots indicate that the cloud is quite narrow, that a considerable portion of the ionized barium is outside the main core after a few minutes, and that the striations contain only a small fraction of the total material.

Molecular collisions 21: Semiclassical approximation to atom-symmetric top rotational excitation

A distorted wave approximation to the T matrix for atom-symmetric top scattering was developed. The approximation is correct to first order in the part of the interaction potential responsible for transitions in the component of rotational angular momentum along the symmetry axis of the top. A semiclassical expression for this T matrix is derived by assuming large values of orbital and rotational angular momentum quantum numbers.
