Ballistocardiography, a Bibliography <1877 - 1964<

The publication of this bibliography on Ballistocardiography, NASA SP-7021 (FAA AM 65-15) fulfills a long-standing requirement for a comprehensive and retrospective collection of references on a subject that is of particular interest to medical investigators and cardiovascular physiologists engaged in aerospace studies. Ballistocardiography is a technique for producing a graphical representation of repetitive motions of the human body arising from the sudden ejection of blood into the great vessels with each heart beat. Standard ballistocardiographic techniques are emphasized in the references included in the bibliography, but attention is also given to several related methods that are used to record these phenomena and to the equipment and instrumentation employed in such investigations. The format of the citations in NASA SP-7021 (FAA AM 65-15) was chosen to resemble, as closely as possible, the format that is now being used in the Index Medicwl published by the National Library of Medicine, except that English titles of foreign language articles appear in parentheses instead of in brackets as they do in Index Medicus. In each case, an attempt was made to identify the language of the article, or the place of publication of the foreign language journal. Since the citations were gathered over a period of years and occasionally from sources which do not appear in standard indexes, complete information was not always available. Citations are arranged alphabetically by personal author. In a large measure, the comprehensivenes of this collection of references is due to information obtained from card files compiled and maintained by Dr. William R. Scarborough of the Georgetown Clinical Research Institute, Office of Aviation Medicine, FAA, supplemented by the private collections of Drs. Isaac Starr, Abraham Noordergraaf, and John L. Nickerson. Selection and preparation of individual references and general editing of the material was done by Dr. Scarborough, who received valuable assistance from Mrs. Claire Tedesco of the Medical Library Branch of the FAA Library. Final compilation and printing were completed under the supervision of NASA.

Meeting on Ground Wind Load Problems in Relation to Launch Vehicles

An unclassified technical meeting on ground wind load problems in relation to launch vehicles was held at the Langley Research Center on June 7 and 8, 1966. The meeting covered several sessions having the following topics: Specific Vehicle Results; Definition of Atmospheric Inputs; Experimental and Analytical Simulation Techniques; Basic Studies of Cylindrical Bodies; and Where Do We Go From Here? - The Designer's Viewpoint. The purpose of the meeting was to provide a forum for direct exchange of information and ideas between government, industry, and university personnel who are actively engaged in this area of work. In addition to focusing attention on current research and development information, the meeting also attempted to offer useful guidance on existing programs and on planning future efforts. The size of the meeting was kept small in order to encourage informal across-the-conference-table discussions among the attendees. In order to promote timely distribution of the papers presented at the meeting, this document has been printed using copy provided by the authors without the customary NASA editing.

Study of high temperature bearing materials

Experimental investigation identifies materials suitable for use in potassium lubricated turbo-generator journal bearing and shaft applications at high temperatures. Attention is given to nonrefractory metals and alloys, refractory metals and alloys, Fe-Ni-Co bonded carbides, refractory compounds, and refractory metal bonded carbides.

Restricted-flow junction between liquids

Allowing a liquid to seep through a long crack in glass provides means for restricting its flow for long periods without attention. The length of the crack prevents the plugging to which capillaries are susceptible.

Production of solvated electrons

Current research, both theoretical and experimental, relating to the production and kinetics of interactions of solvated electrons is reviewed. Particular attention is focused on solvated electrons generated by ionizing radiation in water, alcohols, and organic systems.

Analytical and experimental studies of the steady state combustion mechanism of solid propellants

Our present state of understanding of the steady-state combustion mechanisms of solid propellants is reviewed. Attention is focused principally on heterogeneous propellants. Both experimental and theoretical work is discussed. The recent advances considered include studies of linear pyrolysis of propellant constituents, deflagration of exothermic oxidizers, combustion of oxidizer spheres in gaseous fuels, porous-bed combustion, reactions between gaseous fuel and gaseous oxidizer components, metal combustion, propellant strand burning, rocket motor combustion and microcinematographic experimentation. A theoretical analysis of a model of homogeneous propellant combustion is outlined in detail, with special emphasis placed on surface gasification laws and on flammability limits in nonadiabatic systems. Low pressure, moderate pressure, plateau and high pressure domains of combustion are identified for ammonium perchlorate composite propellants. It is concluded that a better foundation for investigating composite propellant combustion properties is available for ammonium perchlorate than for any other oxidizer. Avenues for potentially fruitful future research are recommended.

Proceedings of the Symposium on Long-Life Hardware for Space

Two-volume edition of the papers of the symposium is described. It is divided into six sections - parts, materials, management, system testing, component design, and system test. Material presented focuses attention on problems created by the increased complexity of technology and long-term mission requirements.
