NREL 25-cm2 High-Pressure Low-Temperature Electrolysis Cell Hardware (Open Source)

This data resource describes an open-source cell hardware that enables low temperature electrolysis (LTE) testing at elevated pressures. Existing commercial options have several downsides when it comes to R&D testing. They are often not designed for repeated reassembly, may not be able to accommodate porous transport layers with different thicknesses, and do not give state-of-the-art performance. Therefore, this hardware was developed specifically with LTE R&D in mind and its design is being made available to the global LTE community. This work was planned and funded by the U.S. Department of Energy's H2NEW consortium (https://h2new.energy.gov/). The hardware design package (.zip file) details the drawings, auxiliary materials, and procedures required to fabricate, assemble, and operate the National Renewable Energy Laboratory's (NREL's) high-pressure low-temperature electrolysis cells. While the hardware itself—end plates, current collectors, flow fields, bolts and washers, tube fittings—is always the same, the assembly and operating procedures may change depending on the active materials being tested, especially for the membrane. Material-specific assembly and operating procedures will be posted to the H2NEW website as they are developed and validated. Disclaimer: The documents and drawings included in this download package describe a design for a low temperature electrolysis hardware that is intended to comply with leak testing according to ASME B31.1. Safe operation at ambient and elevated pressures is the sole responsibility of the end user, which should be evaluated on a case-by-case basis for each individual cell. Factors affecting the sealing capability may depend on, for example, machining quality, cell assembly components, operating conditions, and operating history. Operation at pressure should only be performed on qualified test stands by qualified operators. Pressure seal ring may be effective over wide temperature range

Positive pressure seal rings seal bolted flange joints in pressure vessels containing fluids whose temperatures can vary over a wide range. The seal rings mate with grooves in the flanges and compensate for the excessive thermal expansion or contraction of a gasketed joint.

Diffusion bonding makes strong seal at flanged connector

Copper strip seals a high pressure fluid system connector so that it is insensitive to relaxation of the bolt loads. The copper strip is diffusion bonded to the surfaces of the connector flange by application of high pressure and temperature.

Spherical joint connects axially misaligned flanges

Interconnecting straight tube connects axially misaligned flanges in a duct assembly. It adjusts to accommodate variations in relative location of the flanges by pivoting. Adjustment is by spherical mating faces and a spherical-faced indexing swivel flange for bolting backup.

Study made of transfer of heat energy through metal joints in vacuum environment

Heat energy transfer is concentrated closely around a melted joint and the temperature drop across it decreases rapidly as the bolt and nut are tightened to a minimum torque level. Flat metal surfaces pressed together display a cyclical improvement in heat energy transfer as the interface pressure is increased.

Development of helical seal for high temperature /2000 degrees F/ application

Helical seal is used to seal bolted flange joints in a high temperature environment. The seal design incorporates a new cross-sectional shape, a metal strip with a slight radius, and the use of premolded asbestos. It provides equal load distribution under compression loads, allows for minimum loss and recovery values, and increases the temperature range.

Sealing a rubber bladder between two sections of an accumulator

Leak-free clamping of a two section accumulator is accomplished by a flat metallic ring molded peripherally to the rubber flange of the bladder, and an inset rubber seal bonded to the face of the flange of each section. Method maintains constant torque on the clamping bolts.

Pressure transducer

Pressure-sensitive transducer, consisting of a series of spindle-supported electrically conductive metal washers connected to electrical sensing circuitry, determines the force exerted between a mounting bolt and nut on relatively fragile components.

Quick-set temporary bonding clamps

Method of bonding materials to a flat surface eliminates the use of bolts to hold the pieces together. Two adhesives are used, the primary or permanent bonding material and a quick setting adhesive. No permanent after effects are left on the surfaces to which the materials are bonded.

Low cost lobed bearing

Separate sectors for each lobed area of the bearing are assembled into the bearing housing individually and bolted tightly against the housing inside diameter. The center of a grinding wheel and the center of the housing are offset, resulting in the desired inner radius and tilt of the sector.

Air lock mechanism speeds specimen testing in high-temperature vacuum furnaces

Mechanism, made of 347 stainless steel, is attached to furnace port by bolted flange. Unit incorporates quick opening, high vacuum valve and associated fittings which provide connections to air lock evacuation and to inert gas supply for quenching specimen after it is withdrawn from furnace into air lock.
