On the Bonding in Fe2(CO)9

The bonding in Fe2(CO)9 is analyzed using an self consistend field (SCF) wave function for a large basis set. There is no direct Fe-Fe metal-metal bond. The bridging CO's hold the two Fe(CO)3 fragments together by a sigma donation into the empty Fe-Fe d pi orbital and metal donation from the d pi* orbital into the CO 2pi* orbital. The bonding of the terminal CO is similar to that in Ni(CO)4 and the equatorial groups in Fe(CO)5.

The Low-Lying States of AlCu and AlAg

The singlet and triplet states of AlCu and AlAg below about 32 000/cm are studied using the internally contracted multireference configuration-interaction method. A more elaborate study of the X(sup 1)Sum(sup +) ground state of AlCu is undertaken using extended Gaussian basis sets, including the effect of inner-shell correlation and including a perturbational estimate of relativistic effects. Our best estimate of the spectroscopic constants (r(sub 0), DeltaG(sub 1/2), and D(sub 0)) for the X(sup 1)Sum(sup+) state with the experimental values in parentheses are: 4.416(4.420) a(sub 0), 295 (294) /cm, and 2.318 (2.315) eV. The calculations definitively assign the upper state in the observed transition at 14 892/cm to the lowest (sup 1)Prod state. The calculated spectroscopic constants and radiative lifetime for the (sup 1)Prod state are in good agreement with experiment. The calculations support the tentative assignments of Behm et al. for three band systems observed in the visible region between 25 000 and 28 000 / cm. However, the computed spectroscopic constants are in very poor agreement with those deduced from an analysis of the spectra. Analogous theoretical results for AlAg suggest that the (2)(sup 3)Prod, (3)(sup 3)Prod, and (3)(sup 1)Sum(sup +) states account for the bands observed, but not assigned, by Duncan and co-workers.

Theoretical Study of the Low-Lying States of TiHe(+),TiNe(+),TiAr(+),VAr(+),CrHe(+),CrAr(+),FeHe(+),FeAr(+),CoHe(+),and CoAr(+)

The potential energy curves for the manifold of molecular states dissociating to the lowest transition metal ion states derived from the 3d(sup n+1) and 3d(sup n)4s(sup 1) occupations have been determined for selected transition-metal ion- rare gas systems. These curves have been computed using large basis sets, and the state-averaged complete- active-space self-consistent-field/multireference configuration interaction level of electron correlation treatment. In general, the families of curves derived from the 3d(sup n+1) and 3d(sup n)4s(sup 1) metal occupations are disjoint; however, for Ti(+) there is a strong mixing of the 3d(sup 2)4s(sup 1) and 3d(sup 3) asymptotes, because of the small separation between the asymptotes. This mixing leads to a failure of single-reference-based techniques; this is discussed in the context of our previous single-reference-based treatments.

Theoretical Treatment of the X(sup 1)Sigma(sup +), A(sup 1)Sigma(sup +), and B(sup 1)Pi states of LiH

Ab initio self-consistent-field plus configuration-interaction calculations are reported for the X(sup 1)Sigma(sup +), A(sup 1)Sigma(sup +), and B(sup 1)Pi states of LiH using a 22(sugma)12(pi)7(delta) function Slater basis set. The resulting dissociation energies, with the experimental values in parentheses, are D(sub e)(X(sup 1)Sigma(sup +)) = 19 972 (20288)/ cm, and D(sub e)(A(sup 1)Sigma(sup +)) = 9042 (8682)/ cm, and D(sup e)(B(sup 1)Pi) = 284 (288) /cm. This is the first ab initio treatment to quantitatively account for the binding in the B(sup 1)Pi state. Calculated dipole moments and electronic transition moments for the X(sup 1)Sigma(sup+)-A(sup 1)Sigma(sup +), X(sup 1)Sigma(sup +)-B((sup 1)Pi, and A(sup 1)Sigma(sup +)- B(sup 1)PI band systems are in excellent agreement with existing theoretical and experimental data. Radiative transition probabilities and lifetimes, including both the bound-bound and bound-free contributions, are computed for all vibrational levels of the A(sup 1)Sigma(sup+) and B(sup 1)Pi states. Comparison with previous results using experimentally based potentials provides insight into the sensitivity of the radiative lifetimes to the detailed nature of the uppermost region of the potentials. Our calculated lifetimes for the lower vibrational levels of the A(sup 1)Sigma(sup +) state are within the experimental uncertainty. Our calculated lifetimes for the three vibrational levels of the B(sup 1)Pi state are in excellent agreement with those of Zemke and Stwalley (values in parentheses), increasing with (upsilon)' from 11.3 (11.3) nsec at (upsilon)' = 0, to 17.0 (17.0) nsec at (upsilon)' = 1, and then to 23.5 (24.0) nsec at (upsilon)' = 2.

Theoretical Studies of PNC in Molecules: current Capabilites, Future Prospects, and Issues

The current capabilities of relativistic electronic structure codes for calculations on molecules such as TlF and YbF, which are of interest in the study of parity non-conservation, will be presented. The issues of basis set size and correlation methods will be discussed, and planned developments of the codes which would extend the range of their capabilities will be outlined. Issues of the sensitivity of the desired properties to the form of the nuclear potential and the flexibility of the wave function near the nucleus will be raised to stimulate discussion.

A Coupled-Cluster Study of XON (X=H, F, Cl), and the XON (left and right arrow) XNO Transition States

The XON molecules (X=H, F, and Cl) have been studied using the singles and doubles coupled-cluster method that includes a perturbational estimate of the effects of connected triple excitations, CCSD(T), in conjunction with a double polarized triple-zeta basis set. The equilibrium geometries, dipole moments, harmonic vibrational frequencies and infrared intensities have been predicted. The X-O bond distance is shown to be abnormally long for X=F and Cl, and this is attributed to the degree of ionic bonding and the stability of NO(+). Based on Mulliken population analyses, it is shown that there is a significant degree of X(-), ON(+) ionic bonding character for FON and ClON, whereas for HON the ionic character is reduced and best described as H(+), NO(-). The stability of the XON molecule relative to the XNO isomer is shown to increase in the order HON<FON<ClON, although even ClON is 27.0 plus or minus 1.0 kcal/mol (0 K) less stable than ClNO. The XON (left and right arrow) XNO transition states are also investigated. FON and ClON possess the lowest barrier heights to isomerization (7.2 plus or minus 1.0 kcal/mol at 0 K), but these are sufficiently large to suggest that isomerization should not be rapid at low temperatures.

C2 Fragmentation Energy of C60 Revisited: Theory Disagrees with Most Experiments

Following our earlier work on the subject, we have carried out density functional theory (DFT) and second-order Moller-Plesset perturbation theory (MP2) calculations of the dissociation energy of the reaction C60 yields C58 + C2 using polarized basis sets and geometries optimized with DFT methods. The present theoretical results support an electronic fragmentation energy D(sub e) around 10-11 eV in disagreement with most experimental results that place the dissociation energy D(sub o) (including zero point energy) around 7-8 eV. The plausible errors remaining in the theoretical calculations are unlikely to account for this big difference (2-4 eV).

On the Interaction of CO and NH3 with BH3 and BF3

BH3CO, BF3CO, BH3NH3, and BF3NH3 have been studied using density functional theory (DFT). The computed geometries are in reasonable agreement with experiment. BF3CO is found to be weakly bound. The binding energies of BH3CO, BH3NH3 , and BF3NH3 have also been computed using the coupled cluster singles and doubles level of theory, including a perturbational estimate of the connected triples [CCSD(T)]. These CCSD(T) calculations are performed using correlation consistent polarized-valence triple-zeta basis sets. These are expected to be the most accurate binding energies to date. The DFT binding energies are in good agreement with those obtained at the CCSD(T) level. The bonding is analyzed using the constrained space orbital variation (CSOV) technique. In addition to analyzing the bonding in BH3CO, BH3NH3, and BF3NH3, the CSOV approach is used to study why the bonding in BF3CO is so weak.

Theoretical Study of the Nitric Oxide epsilon and 1100 A Bands

Potential-energy curves, transition-moment functions, Einstein Alpha coefficients and radiative lifetimes associated with the Rydberg state of nitric oxide are calculated in large Gaussian basis sets employing internally contracted MRCI from state-averaged CASSCF wave functions. Computationally, a strong sensitivity of the results to the choice of the CASSCF active space is seen, and careful examination of this behavior gives insight into matters related to the treatment of weakly occupied orbitals, which is a consideration in any study Rydberg excited states. The epsilon system transition-moment function and radiative lifetimes are in disagreement with another calculation in the literature, but reasons for the discrepancies are examined, and the present results are determined to be more accurate.

The Molecular Structure of cis-FONO

The molecular structure of cis-FONO has been determined with the CCSD(T) correlation method using an spdf quality basis set. In agreement with previous coupled-cluster calculations but in disagreement with density functional theory, cis-FONO is found to exhibit normal bond distances. The quadratic and cubic force fields of cis-FONO have also been determined in order to evaluate the effect of vibrational averaging on the molecular geometry. Vibrational averaging is found to increase bond distances, as expected, but it does not affect the qualitative nature of the bonding. The CCSD(T)/spdf harmonic frequencies of cis-FONO support our previous assertion that a band observed at 1200 /cm is a combination band (upsilon(sub 3) + upsilon(sub 4)), and not a fundamental.

A Coupled-Cluster Study of the Molecular Structure, Vibrational Spectrum, and Relative Energies of the XCN and XNC (X=F, Cl) Isomers

The XCN and XNC (X=F, Cl) isomers have been investigated using the CCSD and CCSD(T) methods in conjunction with a TZ2P basis set. Equilibrium geometries, dipole moments, harmonic frequencies, IR intensities and relative energies have been evaluated. The CCSD(T) geometries and vibrational frequencies for the XCN isomers are in good agreement with the available experimental data. The CCSD(T) results for FCN and FNC are in good agreement with the CEPA calculations of Botshwina et al., with the exception of the energy difference, which the CEPA method underestimates by about 1.2 kcal/mol. FCN and CICN are shown to be lower in energy than the FNC and ClNC isomers by 69.511.0 and 42.711.0 kcal/mol (0 K), respectively.

Computed Potential Energy Surfaces and Minimum Energy Pathway for Chemical Reactions

Computed potential energy surfaces are often required for computation of such observables as rate constants as a function of temperature, product branching ratios, and other detailed properties. We have found that computation of the stationary points/reaction pathways using CASSCF/derivative methods, followed by use of the internally contracted CI method with the Dunning correlation consistent basis sets to obtain accurate energetics, gives useful results for a number of chemically important systems. Applications to complex reactions leading to NO and soot formation in hydrocarbon combustion are discussed.

The Low-Lying Electronic States of LiB

The spectroscopic constants for the triplet and singlet states of LiB below about 30 000/ cm are determined using an internally contracted multireference configuration interaction approach in conjunction with [6s 5p 3d 2f] atomic natural orbital basis sets. The ground state is (sup 3)Pi as found in previous work. No excited triplet states are found to be ideal for characterizing the ground state; the (1)(sup 3)Sigma(sup -) state has a transition energy that is too small for many experimental approaches and the (2)(sup 3)Pi and (3)(sup 3)Pi states have bond lengths that are significantly longer than the ground state, resulting in transition intensities that are spread out over many vibrational levels of the ground state.

A Study of the X(sup 2) Sigma(sup +) and A(sup 2) Pi States of MgAr(sup +) and MgKr(sup +)

The ground (sup 2)Sigma(sup +) and lowest excited (sup 2)Pi states of MgAr(sup +) and MgKr(sup +) are studied using the singles and doubles configuration interaction (SDCI) approach, in conjunction with large basis sets. The effect of Mg core correlation and core polarization are accounted for using the core-polarization potential (CPP) approach. Franck-Condon factors, oscillator strengths, radiative lifetimes, dissociation energies, bond lengths, and excitation energies are reported. The computed results are in good agreement with the available experimental data.

The G2(B3LYP/MP2/CC) Approach: A Modification of the G2(MP2) Approach and a Comparison with B3LYP Results

The quadratic configuration interaction calculation in the G2(MP2) approach is replaced by a coupled-cluster singles and doubles calculation including a perturbational estimate of the triples excitations. In addition, the SCF and MP2 geometry optimizations and SCF frequency calculation in the G2(MP2) approach are replaced by a B3LYP geometry optimization and frequency calculation in the proposed G2(B3LYP/MP2/CC) approach. This simplification does not affect the average absolute deviation from experiment, but decreases the maximum error compared with the G2(MP2) approach. The G2(B3LYP/MP2/CC) results are compared with those obtained using the B3LYP approach, and the G2(B3LYP/MP2/CC) model is found to be more reliable, even if the B3LYP calculations are performed using a large basis set.

The Theoretical Transition Probabilities Between the B(sup 3)Pi(sub g) and the A(sup 3)Sigma(Sup +, sub u), W(sup 3)Delta(sub u), B'(sup 3)Sigma(sup -, sub u) States of N2

The electronic transition moment functions between the B(sup 3)Pi(sub g) and the A(sup 3)Sigma(sup +, sub u), W(sup 3)Delta(sub u), B'(sup 3)Sigma(sup -, sub u) states of N2 are studied using the internally contracted multireference configuration interaction (ICMRCI) method based upon complete active space SCF (CASSCF) reference wave-functions. The dependence of the moments on both the one and n-particle basis sets has been investigated in detail. The calculated radiative lifetimes for the vibrational levels of B(sup 3)Pi(sub g) are in excellent agreement with the most recent measurement of Euler and Pipkin (1983)

The Low-Lying Electronic States of YCu

The spectroscopic constants for the singlet and triplet states of YCu below about 15 000 per centimeter are determined using an internally contracted multireference configuration-interaction approach. These calculations are calibrated by studies of fewer states using higher levels of correlation treatment and/or larger basis sets. The computed T(sub e) values and radiative lifetimes are in reasonable agreement with experiment. The calculations confirm the previous experimental assignment for all but one state, where theory helps resolve between two possible assignments.

Global Dipole Moment Function for the X1 Sigma+ Ground State of CO

We have studied the dipole moment function (DMF) for the X(sup 1)Sigma(sup +) state of CO as a function of the completeness of the one- and n-particle treatments. Our best DMF is obtained using an augmented correlation-consistent quadruple-zeta basis set with external correlation included using the averaged-coupled-pair functional (ACPF) approach from a complete-active-space self-consistent-field zeroth-order reference. The DMF evaluated using the finite-field approach is in far better agreement with the experimentally deduced DMF than all previous theoretical determinations, but systematic differences still remain in the DMF at larger internuclear distances that give rise to significant discrepancies between the theoretical and experimental Einstein coefficients for transitions involving vibrational quantum numbers above about Upsilon=15.
