CSRI Summer Proceedings 2021

The Computer Science Research Institute (CSRI) brings university faculty and students to Sandia National Laboratories for focused collaborative research on Department of Energy (DOE) computer and computational science problems. The institute provides an opportunity for university researches to learn about problems in computer and computational science at DOE laboratories, and help transfer results of their research to programs at the labs. Some specific CSRI research interest areas are: scalable solvers, optimization, algebraic preconditioners, graph-based, discrete, and combinatorial algorithms, uncertainty estimation, validation and verification methods, mesh generation, dynamic load-balancing, virus and other malicious-code defense, visualization, scalable cluster computers, beyond Moore’s Law computing, exascale computing tools and application design, reduced order and multiscale modeling, parallel input/output, and theoretical computer science. The CSRI Summer Program is organized by CSRI and includes a weekly seminar series and the publication of a summer proceedings.

FES 2023 Theory & Simulation Performance Target

The Report for the 2023 Theory & Simulation Performance Target (TSPT) is presented herein. The 1st, 2nd and 3rd Quarter Reports are given in Sec. I, Sec. II and Sec. III. These are unchanged from those previously submitted, except that in this final document the equations, figures and citations have been automatically renumbered. The 4th Quarter Report is given in Sec. IV. The following material presents verification calculations of several widely used three-dimensional (3D) magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) equilibrium codes in strongly shaped configurations; for both fixed and free-boundary equilibria; for the so-called vacuum case and for the case of high plasma pressure; and, for magnetic fields that have nested magnetic surfaces and for fields that have a magnetic island. The configurations studied includes the recently discovered “precise-QA” case [Phys. Rev. Lett., 128, 035001 (2002)] and other highly optimized configurations. Because of the strong (extreme) shaping, the latter of these pose challenges to the 3D MHD codes. A new method is introduced for constructing coordinates in arbitrarily shaped toroidal domains, and this can improve the robustness of 3D equilibrium calculations. Beyond the equilibrium calculation, this report demonstrates the capability of performing non-linear extended-MHD modelling of optimized stellarator equilibria. This capability allows the assessment not only of linear stability thresholds but also of the nonlinear evolution of unstable equilibria to new configurations that might be far from the original configuration, with significantly different transport properties and magnetic topology. They also enable the self-consistent determination of pressure profiles in non-integrable magnetic topology through the use of highly anisotropic thermal-transport equations. The calculations presented here represent the first demonstration of extended-MHD calculations in strongly-shaped, optimized quasi-symmetric configurations.

Generating Models of the Flattop Critical Assembly for Benchmark Experiments with Python

Los Alamos National Laboratory has been performing nuclear criticality experiments since 1946 at the Pajarito site, starting the Los Alamos Critical Experiments Facility in 1948. A transition period occurred between 2004 and 2011 as operations moved to the National Criticality Experiments Research Center (NCERC), where criticality experiments are now performed. Criticality experiments are essential for determination and verification of nuclear data used in calculations and modeling—such as radiation transport codes—throughout the industry, enhancing nuclear criticality safety. In addition to nuclear data validation and benchmarking, the remotely operated critical assemblies at NCERC are used for a variety of experiments and training classes supporting criticality safety.

CTF Validation and Verification: Version 4.3

Coolant-Boiling in Rod Arrays- Two Fluids (COBRA-TF) is a thermal/hydraulic (T/H) simulation code designed for light water reactor (LWR) analysis. It uses a two-fluid, three-field (i.e., fluid film, fluid drops, and vapor) modeling approach. Both subchannel and 3D Cartesian forms of nine conservation equations are available for LWR modeling. The code was originally developed by Pacific Northwest Laboratory in 1980 and has been used and modified by several institutions over the last several decades. COBRA-TF is also used at the Pennsylvania State University (PSU) by the Reactor Dynamics and Fuel Modeling Group (RDFMG) and has been improved, updated, and subsequently became the CTF. One part of the improvement process includes validating the methods in CTF. This document seeks to provide a certain level of certainty and confidence in the predictive capabilities of the code for the scenarios it was designed to model—rod bundle geometries with operating conditions that are representative of prototypical pressurized water reactor (PWR)s and boiling water reactor (BWR)s in both normal and accident conditions. This is done by modeling a variety of experiments that simulate these scenarios and then presenting a qualitative and quantitative analysis of the results that demonstrates the accuracy to which CTF is capable of capturing specific quantities of interest.
