Integration of DER Adoption Forecasting into Distribution Planning: Cooperative Research and Development Final Report, CRADA Number CRD-11-00430 (Project H)

The objective of this project is to improve distributed energy resources (DER) technology, time, and locational impact analysis by incorporating customer adoption intentions and preferences into distribution planning and operations. The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) shall collaborate with EPRI staff to contribute to the development of methodology, literature review, analysis, and write-up for two sections of a report "Identification and Overview of Methods for Mapping DER Adoption Forecasts” and “Comparative Analysis of Methods for Mapping DER Adoption Forecasts."

Solar Decathlon Education Partner: Cooperative Research and Development Final Report

The U.S. Department of Energy Solar Decathlon (DOE/SD) is a collegiate competition, comprising 10 contests, that challenges student teams to design and build highly efficient and innovative buildings powered by renewable energy. The winners will be those teams that best blend architectural and engineering excellence with innovation, market potential, building efficiency, and smart energy production. Solar Decathlon is comprised of two Challenges - Design Challenge (annual) and Build Challenge (biennial). The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) provides competition management for Solar Decathlon. NREL and Participant establish this CRADA to enable the success of the Solar Decathlon program in managing sponsorship funds and creating a K12 education program. Participant is to act as an Education Partner to Solar Decathlon, which includes: 1) accepting and dispersing sponsorship funds for DOE/SD; and 2) providing K12 education program to support Solar Decathlon Competition Events in April each year.

PHEV Distribution Grid Integration and Smart Systems Testing: Cooperative Research and Development Final Report

To continue NREL's mission, which includes preparing technologies and markets with "speed and scale," NREL researchers will collaborate with Toyota on plug-in electric vehicle technology. Toyota will provide a collection of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles ("PHEVs" [and ultimately including PEVs], collectively, the "Vehicles") to conduct infrastructure interaction testing at NREL facilities. NREL will use available resources in the Vehicle Testing and Integration Facility (VTIF), its staff parking garage with numerous commercial Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment ("EVSEs"), and its Energy Systems Integration Facility (ESIF) to safely execute research experiments that highlight potential distribution system power quality challenges related to plug-in electric vehicles. The expected outcome of this project is a better understanding of the correlation of individual vehicle power quality attributes to a system of vehicles on a distribution network. The data collected and the simulations conducted will be used to guide future experiments and project development that aid in the deployment of plug-in electric vehicles ("PEV").

Rational Optimization of Microbial Processing for High Yield CO 2 -to-Isopropanol Conversion: Cooperative Research and Development Final Report, CRADA Number CRD-20-17114

This project focuses on the production of the fuel blendstock isopropanol using a CO 2 -fixing Clostridium by metabolic engineering and process optimizations. The project will initiate from a baseline isopropanol producer and pursue isopropanol production at high carbon-conversion efficiency. We will lead engineering work by in-depth pathway analyses including thermodynamics optimization, enzyme expense analysis, metabolic robustness analysis, and -omics analysis. The isopropanol production will be optimized via genome editing followed by fermentation optimizations. This project will deliver a novel microbial process that efficiently converts waste CO 2 to isopropanol at ~g/L titer level within 18-months. This project will layout a solid knowledge basis and technology platform for renewable CO 2 valorization to bio-blendstock that help achieve Co-Optima and Shell's goals.

Cooperative Research and Development Agreement (CRADA) between National Energy Technology Laboratory and Susteon, Inc. (Final Report)

NETL developed a nanostructured Fe catalyst capable of converting syngas to olefins. Initial laboratory testing demonstrated this technology possessed high reactivity (~70% conversion), good olefin selectivity (~40 weight %), and a long-performance lifetime (greater than 500 h on stream with no degradation). Under CRADA Agreement 0988, NETL and Susteon collaborated to evaluate the commercial potential of this catalyst technology by scaling up the catalyst synthesis and collecting reactivity data to characterize the mass and energy balance associated with utilizing this catalyst in a Fischer Tropsch to Olefins (FTO) reactor. Research under CRADA Agreement 0988 illustrated there are technical barriers associated with synthesizing the catalyst that the team was not able to overcome. Reactivity testing with this material illustrated that the catalyst deactivated in less than 50 hours of time on stream. Due to this technical barrier, the team did not meet its Go/No-Go decision target of creating a FTO process that produces at least a 25% reduction in olefin production cost compared to the current state-of the-art technologies. As a result, the team has stopped all work on CRADA Agreement 0988.

Optimize Topology, Component Sizes, and Operating Strategy of Participant's Protype: Cooperative Research and Development Final Report

The purpose of the project was to complete testing of Shine Technologies LLC’s prototype power system called “Juicebox 3.0.” Testing of the prototype using NREL’s hardware-in-the-loop capabilities, including a DC power supply programmed to simulate PV module output and provide the JuiceBox 3.0 at the specified power level and with a load bank of sufficient capacity to mimic DC and AC loads connected to the outlets of the Juicebox 3.0. The unit is provided with SAE wire connectors. A photo of a JuiceBox 3.0 unit is shown in Figure 1 below.
