Modeling of Bi-2212 strand and Rutherford cable in a dipole coil insert

The U.S. Magnet Development Program (US-MDP) explores high-field accelerator magnets compatible with op- erational conditions beyond the limits of Nb3Sn technology. The ongoing R&D High-Temperature Superconductors (HTS) suggests using Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8−x (Bi-2212) as superconducting element. Bi-2212 Rutherford cables maintain a high critical current (IC ) when exposed to a large external magnetic field. However, Bi-2122 exhibits an oversensitive stress-strain response when subject to large Lorentz forces. This paper reports on the magnetic and mechanical analysis of the Bi-2212 cosine-theta insert being developed at Fermilab for a hybrid magnet composed of 2 external layers of Nb3Sn and 2 internal layers of Bi-2212. We performed a FEM analysis of the insert to estimate the HTS stress state in the coil s strands under magnetic and mechanical loads.

FEM Analysis of Hybrid LTS/HTS Cos-Theta Dipole Magnet

After the recent results on Bi-2212 superconductive magnets realized and tested in canted cosine-theta and solenoid designs, respectively, at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) and NHMFL, the first Bi-2212 stress-managed cosine-theta insert magnet is in the assembly phase at Fermilab. This insert will be part of the first hybrid cosine-theta magnet made of Nb3Sn outer layers within the US-MDP effort to reach 20 T bore field. This paper reports the analytical analysis of the cosine-theta Nb3Sn/Bi-2212 hybrid magnet. As an introduction, it shows the validation of the finalized HTS coils' design optimized using the ROXIE code. Subsequently, it reports the parameters, logic, and implementation method of the 2D electromagnetic and mechanical FEM analysis of the LTS/HTS hybrid magnet. Results from the ANSYS detailed model made with sub-modeling geometry are compared with the homogeneous model implemented in the past. Moreover, a Python code was implemented to simulate the current degradation due to stresses in the detail-modeled conductor areas. The current degradation is introduced in the simulation dynamics for both conductors as an iteration process during the energization load step only after applying pre-stress and thermal loads. The numerical and graphic results of the 2D cosine-theta LTS/HTS magnet cross-section will be described and analyzed.

Re-assembly and test of COMB dipole magnet with STAR® wires

Fermilab is developing the Conductor on Molded Barrel (COMB) magnet technology that works well with round REBCO conductors. COMB-STAR-1 magnet based on STAR wire by AMPeers was fabricated and tested in liquid nitrogen in 2023. The magnet demonstrated >90 Ic retention in the coils (before/after winding). Even though the magnet was not originally designed for operation at lower than 77 K temperatures, it was decided to test it in liquid helium to: - check the instrumentation and the DAQ system; - check the ability to detect resistive transitions or quenches and to protect the magnet; - gather the information on possible magnet design chances and upgrades of the test facility for future testing of HTS magnets. The magnet was re-assembled with a larger iron yoke and the axial supports and tested in liquid helium in 2024 at Fermilab s Vertical Magnet Test Facility (VMTF). It was the first HTS magnet test at that facility ever.

Modeling wiggler with hard edge dipoles

Wigglers and undulators are used as devices for generating synchrotron radiation. They are also used for modification of various beam properties circulating in a storage ring. Basic ‘dumping wiggler’ is used for change of the damping time, equilibrium emittance, and energy spread. In damping wigglers are used to increase the damping rate of the energy spread induced by the beam-beam interaction. The commonly used MAD and Elegant software has only simplified planar wiggler configuration and no model for a helical wiggler.

Mechanical Design of the PIP-II ORBUMP Pulsed Dipole Magnet

The Proton Improvement Plan-II (PIP-II) is a vital upgrade to Fermilab's accelerator complex. The upgrade is designed to power the world s most intense high-energy neutrino beam in future experiments. The magnet pulse repetition rate of the PIP-II injection system is being upgraded from 15 Hz to 20 Hz and requires a roughly 30% increase in the magnetic field of the new Orbital Bump (ORBUMP) magnets in the Booster. The magnet is secured in a vacuum box and the core is made up of 0.127 mm thick, low carbon steel laminations with a C-5 inorganic coating. The core is clamped using external tie bars welded to the core end plates. ANSYS Finite Element Analysis (FEA) was used to evaluate the clamping design to minimize the deflection of the core post welding of the tie bars. The water-cooled single turn coil is electrically isolated from the core using virgin PEEK insulating material in the gap. An investigation into the high voltage performance of the virgin PEEK insulator was conducted. The design of the coil which shapes the magnetic field by acting as the pole tips is critical for the integrated field homogeneity. The coil manufacturing tolerances and fabrication techniques were evaluated to ensure the magnetic properties of the magnet could be obtained. The ORBUMP magnet mechanical design is presented in this paper.
