Signal-to-noise ratio determination circuit

A signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) determination of an input is described, having signal components within a given frequency range and noise components, without actual measurement of the noise components. Bandpass limiter having a constant signal plus noise output level is connected to the output of the first filter, the signal-to-noise ratio of the input to the bandpass limiter being linearly related to the dbm level of signal components at the output. Calibration is connected to the bandpass limiter and is responsive to the signal components at the output to derive the SNR of the input to the determination circuit. The SNR determination circuit is disclosed for use in a diversity receiver having a plurality of input channels.

Solar rotation as determined from OSO-4 EUV spectroheliograms.

Spectroheliograms obtained in extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lines and the Lyman continuum are used to determine the rotation rate of the solar chromosphere, transition region, and corona. A cross-correlation analysis of the observations indicates the presence of differential rotation through the chromosphere and transition region. The rotation rate does not vary with height. The average sidereal rotation rate is given by omega (deg/day) = 13.46-2.99 sin squared B where B is the solar latitude. This rate agrees with spectroscopic determinations of the photospheric rotation rate, but is slower by about 1 deg/day than rates determined from the apparent motion of photospheric magnetic fields and from the brightest points of active regions observed in the EUV. The corona does not clearly show differential rotation as do the chromosphere and transition region.

Protonospheric columnar electron content determination. I - Analysis.

A combination of phase-path length difference and Faraday rotation angle data obtained from geostationary satellite transmissions is used to determine the integration constant necessary to convert phase-path length difference information into absolute values of total slant columnar electron content. The total content thus determined, which is the sum of the ionospheric and protonospheric contents, is measured with uncertainties about one order of magnitude smaller than the value of the protonospheric content. It is thus, in principle, possible to determine the latter by subtracting from the measurement the so-called 'Faraday content.' This idea, proposed by several authors in the past, is critically examined in the present paper. It is impossible to totally eliminate the ionospheric contribution to the measurements; however, it is shown that the degree of elimination depends on the type of distribution of the longitudinal component of the geomagnetic field along the path of observation. Satisfactory minimization of the ionospheric contribution can be accomplished only under certain geometries of observation.

Estimation strategies for orbit determination of applications satellites

A procedure for applying covariance analysis to determine the most efficient estimation strategy for satisfying the stringent mission requirements of long arc orbit determination of applications satellites is presented. The procedure is applied to the problem of satisfying mission requirements with respect to altitude determination of GEOS-C. It is shown that requirements are met when twelve dominant geopotential coefficients are estimated along with satellite state. This application of covariance analysis is general and can be applied to future applications satellites. Recommendations for future studies are also given.

Determination of aerosol content in the atmosphere from ERTS-1 data

The author has identified the following significant results. Significant results, relating the radiance over water surfaces to the atmospheric aerosol content, have been obtained. The results indicate that the MSS channels 4, 5, and 6 centered at 0.55, 0.65, and 0.75 microns have comparable sensitivity, and that the aerosol content can be determined within + or - 10% with the assumed measurement errors of the MSS. The fourth channel, MSS 7, is not useful for aerosol determination due to the water radiance values from this channel generally being less than the instrument noise. The accuracy of the aerosol content measurement could be increased by using an instrument specifically designed for this purpose. This radiance-aerosol content relationship can possibly provide a basis for monitoring the atmospheric aerosol content on a global basis, allowing a base-line value of aerosols to be established. The contrast-aerosol content investigation shows useful linear relationships in MSS channels 4 and 5, allowing the aerosol content to be determined within + or - 10%. MSS 7 is not useful due to the low accuracy in the water radiance, and MSS 6 is found to be too insensitive. These results rely on several assumptions due to the lack of ground truth data, but do serve to indicate which channels are most useful.

An error criterion for determining sampling rates in closed-loop control systems

The determination of an error criterion which will give a sampling rate for adequate performance of linear, time-invariant closed-loop, discrete-data control systems was studied. The proper modelling of the closed-loop control system for characterization of the error behavior, and the determination of an absolute error definition for performance of the two commonly used holding devices are discussed. The definition of an adequate relative error criterion as a function of the sampling rate and the parameters characterizing the system is established along with the determination of sampling rates. The validity of the expressions for the sampling interval was confirmed by computer simulations. Their application solves the problem of making a first choice in the selection of sampling rates.

Method of approximate determination of the characteristics of nonlinear vibrational systems

Methods are discussed for determining the characteristics of elements of nonlinear vibrational systems, from the results of analyzing forced vibrations which are approximate in themselves, since they are based on the use of experimental data. The constant components of the linearized characteristics and linearization coefficients are determined experimentally by finding the values of these quantities at different vibration amplitudes and frequencies and subsequent approximation of their analytical expressions. Simple and convenient, although approximate, formulas for determining the characteristics of vibrational systems from experimentally known functions are derived.

Comparison of techniques for determination of boundary layer transition in shock wave induced flows

Three methods of determining transition times in shock wave-induced boundary layers are compared. Experimental transition data for these comparisons were obtained in two different shock tube facilities for shock wave Mach numbers from 3.0 to 5.5. Bias in determining transition times by the conventional thin-film temperature history and difficulty in reading schlieren photographs suggest the use of a new heat-flux technique for determining transition. It is suggested that the heat-flux technique be used when possible, because of better sensitivity and a view of the entire transition process and because it reveals important information concerning departures from theoretical laminar boundary-layer development. Transition results presented extend the range of data available in the literature and are in good agreement with existing data through transition Reynolds numbers of 1,000,000.

On the lidar determination of atmospheric transmittance

A solution of the lidar equation is given with the aim of determining the attenuation coefficient of the atmosphere under conditions of the existence of a relation between it and the effective backscatter area. The errors of determining the attenuation coefficient from measurements of the echo signal power are analyzed. A proposed method of determining that coefficient by sounding with variable pulse lengths is examined.

Calibration and evaluation of Skylab altimetry for geodetic determination of the geoid

The author has identified the following significant results. The Skylab altimeter experiment has proven the capability of the altimeter for measurement of sea surface topography. The geometric determination of the geoid/mean sea level from satellite altimetry is a new approach having significant applications in many disciplines including geodesy and oceanography. A generalized least squares collocation technique was developed for determination of the geoid from altimetry data. The technique solves for the altimetry geoid and determines one bias term for the combined effect of sea state, orbit, tides, geoid, and instrument error using sparse ground truth data. The influence of errors in orbit and a priori geoid values are discussed. Although the Skylab altimeter instrument accuracy is about plus or minus 1m, significant results were obtained in identification of large geoidal features such as over the Puerto Rico trench. Comparison of the results of several passes shows that good agreement exists between the general slopes of the altimeter geoid and the ground truth, and that the altimeter appears to be capable of providing more details than are now available with best known geoids.

Applications of satellite-to-satellite tracking to orbit determination and geopotential recovery

Recent simulations have demonstrated the applicability of satellite-to-satellite tracking data to the related problems of orbit determination and geopotential recovery. Specifically, satellite-to-satellite tracking between an earth orbiting satellite and a satellite at geosynchronous altitude (36000 km) produces long continuous data arcs which are not available by means of ground-based tracking. This facility, in conjunction with correct estimation techniques, yields exceptional orbit determination accuracy. The data type also has considerable applicability to geopotential determination when the low satellite has a high inclination.

An investigation in MSFC 14-inch TWT to determine the static stability characteristics of 0.004-scale model (74-OTS) space shuttle vehicle 5 configuration (IA33), volume 1

Wind tunnel tests were conducted to: (1) determine the static stability characteristics of the Shuttle Vehicle 5 configuration; (2) determine the effect on the Vehicle 5 aerodynamic characteristics of External Tank (ET) and Solid Rocket Booster (SRB) nose shape, SRB nozzle shroud flare angle, orbiter to tank fairing, and sting location; (3) provide flow visualization using thin film oil paint; and (4) determine rudder, body flap, and inboard and outboard elevon hinge moments. The mated vehicle model was mounted in three different ways: (1) the orbiter mounted on the balance with the SRB's attached to the tank and the tank in turn attached to the orbiter; (2) the tank mounted on the balance (with the sting protruding through the tank base) with the SRB's and orbiter attached to the tank, and (3) with the tank mounted on the balance and the balance in turn supported by a forked sting entering the nozzle of each SRB, extending forward into the SRB's then crossing over to the tank to provide a balance socket. Data were obtained for Mach numbers from 0.6 through 4.96 at angles-of-attack and -sideslip from -10 to 10 degrees.

Applications of satellite technology to gravity field determination

Various techniques for using satellite technology to determine the earth's gravity field are analyzed and compared. A high-low configuration satellite to satellite tracking mission is recommended for the determination of the long wavelength portion of the gravity field. Satellite altimetry and satellite gradiometry experiments are recommended for determination of the short wavelength portion of the gravity field. The recently developed least squares collocation method for estimating the gravity field from satellite derived data is analyzed and its equivalence to conventional methods is demonstrated.

Results of test MA22 in the NASA/LaRC 31-inch CFHT on an 0.010-scale model (32-0) of the space shuttle configuration 3 to determine RCS jet flow field interaction, volume 1

A wind tunnel test was conducted in the Langley Research Center 31-inch Continuous Flow Hypersonic Wind Tunnel from May 6, 1975 through June 3, 1975. The primary objectives of this test were the following: (1) to study the ability of the wind tunnel to repeat, on a run-to-run basis, data taken for identical configurations to determine if errors in repeatability could have a significant effect on jet interaction data, (2) to determine the effect of aerodynamic heating of the scale model on jet interaction, (3) to investigate the effects of elevon and body flap deflections on jet interaction, (4) to determine if the effects from jets fired separately along different axes can be added to equal the effects of the jets fired simultaneously (super position effects), (5) to study multiple jet effects, and (6) to investigate area ratio effects, i.e., the effect on jet interaction measurements of using wind tunnel nozzles with different area ratios in the same location. The model used in the test was a .010-scale model of the Space Shuttle Orbiter Configuration 3. The test was conducted at Mach 10.3 and a dynamic pressure of 150 psf. RCS chamber pressure was varied to simulate free flight dynamic pressures of 5, 7.5, 10, and 20 psf.

Volume Fraction Determination in Cast Superalloys and DS Eutectic Alloys by a New Practice for Manual Point Counting

Volume fraction of a constituent or phase was estimated in six specimens of conventional and DS-eutectic superalloys, using ASTM E562-76, a new standard recommended practice for determining volume fraction by systematic manual point count. Volume fractions determined ranged from 0.086 to 0.36, and with one exception, the 95 percent relative confidence limits were approximately 10 percent of the determined volume fractions. Since the confidence-limit goal of 10 percent, which had been arbitrarily chosen previously, was achieved in all but one case, this application of the new practice was considered successful.

Sensitivity analysis of short-arc station coordinate determinations from range data

The accurate determination of the geocentric coordinates of a tracking station is essential for most geodetic and geophysical satellite applications. Since most of these satellites are close to the earth, the geopotential model is a dominant source of error which significantly influences station coordinate determinations. Other sources, such as GM error and drag, also influence the accuracy of the station coordinate determination. One technique for reducing the effect of these errors is to use short-arcs consisting of a few passes of the satellite over the tracking station. This paper analyzes the sensitivity of short-arc station coordinate estimates to various errors in the physical model, to the number of observations, and to the station-satellite geometry using simulated as well as real data.

Geometrical procedures for the analysis of spacecraft attitude and bias determinability

Geometrical procedures are presented for predicting the determinability of spacecraft attitude and bias parameters. An analysis is presented on three common attitude measurements: sun angle, nadir angle, and sun-to-earth mid-scan rotation angle. First, the geometry of these measurements is considered for an arbitrary fixed location of the spacecraft; then the effect of orbital motion is analyzed. The results are summarized in a set of simple geometrical rules. The application of these rules to the Synchronous Meteorological Satellite-2 (SMS-2) is discussed. As a result of this geometrical analysis, modifications were made to the SMS-2 bias determination schedule which substantially enhanced the determinability of attitude sensor biases.

Refractive-index profile and physical process determination in thick gratings in electrooptic crystals

A method for determining the refractive index profile of thick phase gratings in linear electrooptic crystals is presented. This method also determines the effective photovoltaic electric field and the relative contributions of diffusion and drift during hologram recording. The method requires only a knowledge of the modulation ratio during hologram recording and the fundamental and the higher-order diffraction efficiencies of the grating. As an illustration of the method, the refractive index profile, the effective photovoltaic field, and the relative contributions of diffusion and drift are determined from experimental measurements for a lithium niobate holographic grating.
