Pipe joints reinforced in place with fitted aluminum sleeves

Installation of an aluminum sleeve, using specially designed tools, reinforces solder- sealed ferrule joints in installed small-diameter aluminum tubing. Tubing joints reinforced by this method withstand considerable torsional tensional, and vibrational stresses at moderately elevated temperatures.

Influence of thermal anisotropy on best-fit estimates of shock normals

The influence of thermal anisotropy on the estimates of interplanetary shock parameters and the associated normals is discussed. A practical theorem is presented for quantitatively correcting for anisotropic effects by weighting the before and after magnetic fields by the same anisotropy parameter h. The quantity h depends only on the thermal anisotropies before and after the shock and on the angles between the magnetic fields and the shock normal. The theorem can be applied to most slow shocks, but in those cases h usually should be lower, and sometimes markedly lower, than unity. For the extreme values of h, little change results in the shock parameters or in the shock normal.

S.T.O.L., V.T.O.L., and V./S.T.O.L. - Where do they fit in.

The problems and potential of V/STOL transportation are examined. A detailed review is given of the development, characteristics, and requirements of V/STOL, STOL, and VTOL systems. The problem of whether V/STOL is worth the effort is considered, and it is concluded that such aircraft have a role in meeting real transport requirements, and that their development should be pursued. Finally, a forecast of V/STOL economics is presented, and implementation problems are discussed.

Influence of thermal anisotropy on best-fit estimates of shock normals.

This paper deals with the influence of thermal anisotropy on least-squares estimates of interplanetary shock parameters and the associated normals by using the Rankine-Hugoniot equations. A practical theorem is given for quantitatively correcting for anisotropic effects by weighting the before and after magnetic fields by the same 'anisotropy parameter' h. The quantity h depends only on the thermal anisotropies before and after the shock and on the angles between the magnetic fields and the shock normal. It is shown that, for fast shocks and for a liberal range of realistic conditions, the quantity h lies in the range from 0.90 to 1.22. The theorem can also be applied to most slow shocks, but in those instances h usually should be lower and sometimes markedly lower than unity.

Nondestructive determination of radionuclides in lunar samples using a large low-background gamma-ray spectrometer and a novel application of least-squares fitting

Dual-parameter gamma ray spectrometer systems with large volume Nal (Tl) crystals and low backgrounds were used for nondestructive determination of K, Th, U and cosmic ray produced radionuclides in 60 lunar samples. The total weight of samples measured with this system is 28 kg, and the individual sample weights varied from 2 to 2300 g. Samples from Apollo 11, 12, 14, 15 and 16 were measured. Operation of the spectrometers in the coincidence mode and analyzing single coincidence spectra permits the simultaneous determination of 8-10 radionuclides in each lunar sample.

A criterion based on an information theoretic measure for goodness of fit between classifier and data base

A criterion for characterizing an iteratively trained classifier is presented. The criterion is based on an information theoretic measure that is developed from modeling classifier training iterations as a set of cascaded channels. The criterion is formulated as a figure of merit and as a performance index to check the appropriateness of application of the characterized classifier to an unknown data base and for implementing classifier updates and data selection respectively.

Automatic numerical generation of body-fitted curvilinear coordinate system for field containing any number of arbitrary two-dimensional bodies

A method for automatic numerical generation of a general curvilinear coordinate system with coordinate lines coincident with all boundaries of a general multi-connected region containing any number of arbitrarily shaped bodies is presented. With this procedure the numerical solution of a partial differential system may be done on a fixed rectangular field with a square mesh with no interpolation required regardless of the shape of the physical boundaries, regardless of the spacing of the curvilinear coordinate lines in the physical field, and regardless of the movement of the coordinate system. Numerical solutions for the lifting and nonlifting potential flow about Joukowski and Karman-Trefftz airfoils using this coordinate system generation show excellent comparison with the analytic solutions. The application to fields with multiple bodies is illustrated by a potential flow solution for multiple airfoils.

Optimization of structures to satisfy a flutter velocity constraint by use of quadratic equation fitting

Using the first and the second derivative of flutter velocity with respect to the parameters, the velocity hypersurface is made quadratic. This greatly simplifies the numerical procedure developed for determining the values of the design parameters such that a specified flutter velocity constraint is satisfied and the total structural mass is near a relative minimum. A search procedure is presented utilizing two gradient search methods and a gradient projection method. The procedure is applied to the design of a box beam, using finite-element representation. The results indicate that the procedure developed yields substantial design improvement satisfying the specified constraint and does converge to near a local optimum.
