Space shuttle orbiter handling quality criteria applicable to terminal area, approach, and landing

An analytical pilot-vehicle study was made to determine the performance criteria for the space shuttle vehicle. Specifications for the flying qualities of piloted aircraft were used for appropriate portions of the space shuttle mission. The handling qualities during the terminal phases of the space shuttle flight were simulated to develop the necessary criteria. Additional criteria required for conditions during the unpowered approach and landing trajectory portion of the flight are explained.

Zero g manual cargo handling

A series of studies were conducted utilizing a water-immersion simulator facility to better define the cargo that can realistically be handled by man. The initial phase of the program was a parametric study to define man's intravehicular (IV) cargo transfer capabilities, and its results are reported. Additional phases of the study, deal with: (1) man's ability to perform extravehicular (EV) cargo transfer, (2) the ability to transfer cargo through a 1.5 m (5-foot) diameter tunnel (IV), and (3) the utilization of electroadhesive/electromagnetic mobility aids for both IV and EV self-locomotion and cargo transfer.

Riding and handling qualities of light aircraft: A review and analysis

Design procedures and supporting data necessary for configuring light aircraft to obtain desired responses to pilot commands and gusts are presented. The procedures employ specializations of modern military and jet transport practice where these provide an improvement over earlier practice. General criteria for riding and handling qualities are discussed in terms of the airframe dynamics. Methods available in the literature for calculating the coefficients required for a linearized analysis of the airframe dynamics are reviewed in detail. The review also treats the relation of spin and stall to airframe geometry. Root locus analysis is used to indicate the sensitivity of airframe dynamics to variations in individual stability derivatives and to variations in geometric parameters. Computer programs are given for finding the frequencies, damping ratios, and time constants of all rigid body modes and for generating time histories of aircraft motions in response to control inputs. Appendices are included presenting the derivation of the linearized equations of motion; the stability derivatives; the transfer functions; approximate solutions for the frequency, damping ratio, and time constants; an indication of methods to be used when linear analysis is inadequate; sample calculations; and an explanation of the use of root locus diagrams and Bode plots.

Proposed space shuttle cargo handling criteria at the operational site (preliminary)

The criteria for cargo handling at the operational site of space shuttles are presented, based on assumed program requirements. The concepts for the following functions are described: maintenance and checkout facility, transfer to launch pad, and launch pad. The requirements for the ground equipment are given along with the general sequences for cargo loading.

Grumman H-33 space shuttle orbiter aerodynamic and handling-qualities study

A study of a representative delta-wing orbiter, the Grumman H-33, that utilized external-hydrogen tanks has been completed. The study encompassed a detailed wind-tunnel program from subsonic to hypersonic speeds, analyses of the data, and the calculation and assessment of the orbiter handling qualities using the most aft center-of-gravity locations anticipated during entry and approach.

Revisions to V/STOL handling qualities criteria of AGARD report 408

A brief review of selected handling qualities criteria for V/STOL aircraft shows that although a clearer understanding of the requirements for controversial areas such as roll control power, vertical flight path control, and transition is in hand, considerably more research is needed to refine these criteria for operational IFR activity. Because many items interact to influence the pilots' overall impression of the aircraft's behaviour, additional work of a systematic nature must be done to clarify this aspect. A better definition of a gust model which includes discrete gust effects is needed to firm up criteria for both hover and STOL operation.

The handling qualities simulation program for the augmentor wing jet STOL research aircraft.

Description of a program in which a complete STOL research aircraft (modified de Havilland C8-A Buffalo) was simulated to determine final design values for control systems and devices which augment aircraft control. Program objectives, computer requirements, and the simulation software and hardware are outlined together with the organization of the digital operations. The simulation program in combination with simulator hardware provided test pilots a realistic representation of the aircraft, with the result that various control and stability augmentation systems were evaluated using pilot handling qualities ratings. Final design parameters were then found for the aircraft which is scheduled for flight test in early 1972.

Vacuum handling system for powdered samples.

A sample system for handling powdered material under vacuum conditions is described. The system features linear motion of up to 0.25 m and the means for complete isolation of the sample and sample system from external apparatus. The system was designed for the measurement of thermophysical properties of lunar material from Apollo missions under thoroughest possible prevention of contamination.

A design procedure and handling quality criteria for lateral directional flight control systems

A practical design procedure for aircraft augmentation systems is described based on quadratic optimal control technology and handling-quality-oriented cost functionals. The procedure is applied to the design of a lateral-directional control system for the F4C aircraft. The design criteria, design procedure, and final control system are validated with a program of formal pilot evaluation experiments.

Aircraft handling qualities data

Available information on weight and inertia, aerodynamic derivatives, control characteristics, and stability augmentation systems is documented for 10 representative contemporary airplanes. Data sources are given for each airplane. Flight envelopes are presented and dimensional derivatives, transfer functions for control inputs, and several selected handling qualities parameters have been computed and are tabulated for 10 different flight conditions including the power approach configuration. The airplanes documented are the NT-33A, F-104A, F-4C, X-15, HL-10, Jetstar, CV-880M, B-747, C-5A, and XB-70A.

Microbiological surveillance of food handling at NASA-MSFC

A microbiological surveillance program of cafeterias and snack bars was conducted to supplement the inspections by NASA Medical Center personnel and to gather information for cafeteria management to pinpoint areas of possible contamination. The work conducted under the program from its inception in January, 1972, to its termination on September 15, 1972 is summarized. Ten food handling facilities were included in the surveillance at NASA-MSFC.

Handling System for Iridium-192 Seeds

A complete system is proposed for safe handling of iridium-192 seeds used to internally irradiate malignant growths. A vibratory hopper feeds the seeds onto a transport system for deposit in a magazine or storage area. A circular magazine consisting of segmented plastic tubing with holes in the walls to accommodate the seeds seems feasible. The magazine is indexed to stop and release a seed for calibration and deposition.

Data handling and analysis for the 1971 corn blight watch experiment.

Review of the data handling and analysis methods used in the near-operational test of remote sensing systems provided by the 1971 corn blight watch experiment. The general data analysis techniques and, particularly, the statistical multispectral pattern recognition methods for automatic computer analysis of aircraft scanner data are described. Some of the results obtained are examined, and the implications of the experiment for future data communication requirements of earth resource survey systems are discussed.

Apparatus for remote handling of materials

Apparatus for remote handling of materials are described. A closed housing is provided with first and second containers and first and second reservoirs for holding materials to be mixed. The materials are transferable from the reservoirs to the first container where they are mixed. The mixed materials are then conveyed from the first container to the second container preferably by dumping the mixed materials into a funnel positioned over the second container. The second container is then moved to a second position for analysis of the mixed materials. For example, the materials may be ignited and the flame analyzed. Access, such as a sight port, is provided in the housing at the analysis position. The device provides a simple and inexpensive apparatus for safely mixing a pyrophoric material and an oxidizer which together form a thermite type mixture that burns to produce a large quantity of heat and light.
