Iron telluride ladder compounds: Predicting the structural and magnetic properties of BaFe 2 Te 3

Since the discovery of pressure-induced superconductivity in the two-leg ladder system BaFe 2 X 3 (X=S, Se), with the 3d iron electronic density n=6, quasi-one-dimensional iron-based ladders have attracted considerable attention. In this work, we use density-functional theory to predict that the novel n=6 iron ladder BaFe 2 Se 3 could be stable with a similar crystal structure as BaFe 2 Se 3 . Furthermore, our results also indicate that BaFe2Te3 will display a complex 2×2 block-type magnetic order. Due to the magnetic striction effects of this block order, BaFe2Te3 should be a magnetic noncollinear ferrielectric system with a net polarization 0.31μC/cm2. In summary, the similar electronic density and magnetic ground state of Te- and Se-based ladders indicates both should display similar properties. In particular, the physical and structural similarity with BaFe 2 Se 3 suggests that BaFe 2 Se 3 could become superconducting under high pressure.

Magnetic properties of Tm 3+ in layered triangular lattices

Rare-earth chalcogenides, ARCh 2 (A = alkali metal or monovalent ion; R = rare-earth elements; Ch = O, S, and Se), have been identified as promising candidates for exploring a variety of novel frustrated quantum magnetic phenomena. Tm-based series, ATmCh 2 , where Tm 3+ ions are arranged on various frustrated geometric lattices, provide a platform for investigating the competitions among spin–orbit coupling, crystal field effects, and magnetic exchange interactions in the context of geometric frustration. In this study, we present how the crystallographic structures of newly synthesized ATmSe 2 (A = Li and Na) influence their frustrated magnetic behaviors. Both NaTmSe 2 and LiTmSe 2 adopt a delafossite-type structure with a two-dimensional (2D) triangular lattice, but LiTmSe 2 has a much shorter c-axis parameter compared to this in NaTmSe 2 . Both heat capacity and magnetic susceptibility measurements confirm the absence of long-range magnetic order in either compound. However, magnetic measurements data reveals the differences in magnetic interactions: NaTmSe 2 exhibits features of low-dimensional magnetism, likely driven by its layered crystal structure, compared to LiTmSe 2 .

Crystal structure and magnetic properties of the layered van der Waals compound VB r 3

Single crystals of the layered, van der Waals compound VBr 3 were synthesized by a vapor transport technique, and characterized by single-crystal x-ray diffraction, temperature- and field-dependent magnetization, and temperature-dependent specific-heat measurements. VBr 3 has a honeycomb-based BiI 3 -type structure with space group $R$-3 (no. 148) at 100 K, analogous to the structure of other honeycomb trihalides. Structural stacking faults were observed as evidenced by the streaking of reflections along $c*$ in the diffraction data. VBr 3 goes through a structural phase transition at 90.4 K and a subsequent antiferromagnetic phase transition at 26.5 K, below which the magnetic moments are primarily aligned along the $c$-axis.

Towards understanding the magnetic properties of the breathing pyrochlore compound Ba3Yb2Zn5O11through single-crystal studies

Abstract Ba 3 Yb 2 Zn 5 O 11 is exceptional among breathing pyrochlore compounds for being in the nearly-decoupled limit where inter-tetrahedron interactions are weak, hosting isolated clusters or molecular magnet-like tetrahedra of magnetic ytterbium (Yb 3+ ) ions. In this work, we present the study carried out on single-crystal samples of the breathing pyrochlore Ba 3 Yb 2 Zn 5 O 11 , using a variety of magnetometry and neutron scattering techniques along with theoretical modeling. We employ inelastic neutron scattering to investigate the magnetic dynamics as a function of applied field (with respect to both magnitude and direction) down to a temperature of 70 mK, where inelastic scattering reveals dispersionless bands of excitations as found in earlier powder sample studies, in good agreement with a single-tetrahedron model. However, diffuse neutron scattering at zero field and dc-susceptibility at finite field exhibit features suggesting the presence of excitations at low-energy that are not captured by the single tetrahedron model. Analysis of the local structure down to 2 K via pair distribution function analysis finds no evidence of structural disorder. We conclude that effects beyond the single tetrahedron model are important in describing the low-energy, low-temperature physics of Ba 3 Yb 2 Zn 5 O 11 , but their nature remains undetermined.

Magnetic properties of CrFeCoNi based high entropy alloys

Monte Carlo simulations are performed on three high entropy alloys: Cr0.25Fe0.25Co0.25Ni0.25, Cr0.2Fe0.2Co0.2Ni0.2Pd0.2, and Cr0.2Mn0.2Fe0.2Co0.2Ni0.2, with exchange interactions extracted from The ab initio Korringa-Kohn-Rostoker method combined with the coherent potential approximation calculations. Using finite size scaling analyses, we estimate the magnetic phase transition temperature for the four component alloy to be 108(2) K, and although the individual critical exponents are different from 3D Heisenberg universality class, the reduced exponent follows Suzuki weak universality. With the additional Palladium component, the transition temperature elevates to about 200 K. In contrast, we find no magnetic order for the five component alloy with Manganese at any finite temperatures.

Magnetic properties of X-ray bright points

Using high-resolution Kitt Peak National Observatory magnetograms and sequences of simultaneous S-054 soft X-ray solar images, the properties of X-ray bright points (XBP) and ephemeral active regions (ER) are compared. All XBP appear on the magnetograms as bipolar features, except for very recently emerged or old and decayed XBP. The separation of the magnetic bipoles is found to increase with the age of the XBP, with an average emergence growth rate of 2.2 plus or minus 0.4 km per sec. The total magnetic flux in a typical XBP living about 8 hr is found to be about two times ten to the nineteenth power Mx. A proportionality is found between XBP lifetime and total magnetic flux, equivalent to about ten to the twentieth power Mx per day of lifetime.

Characterization of Soil and Rock Magnetic Properties along Multiple Hillslope Transects at Teller Road Site, Seward Peninsula, Alaska, 2018 and 2023

The magnetometer data was collected in multiple directions across the watershed hillslope at the NGEE Arctic Teller Road site at mile marker 27 (TL_MM27) on the Seward Peninsula, Alaska over multiple years in March 2018 and April 2023. The magnetic data were collected using a Geometrics Inc. G-858 gradiometer and G-857 base station in 2018 and the G-864 gradiometer and G857 base station in 2023. The data was collected (in all instances) by towing the gradiometer behind a snow machine around the watershed with the two sensors in a vertical profile with constant spacing during the continuous survey in that specific year. Magnetic total field measurements were collected by gradiometer and base station, and the data processing was performed in Geometrics MagMap2000 software. The processing steps were limited to removal of data spikes (despiking), reading dropouts, and correction/removal of bad GPS points. All offsets between sensors and GPS are stated within the data files and metadata, alongwith the processed and raw data. The Next-Generation Ecosystem Experiments: Arctic (NGEE Arctic), was a research effort to reduce uncertainty in Earth System Models by developing a predictive understanding of carbon-rich Arctic ecosystems and feedbacks to climate. NGEE Arctic was supported by the Department of Energy's Office of Biological and Environmental Research. The NGEE Arctic project had two field research sites: 1) located within the Arctic polygonal tundra coastal region on the Barrow Environmental Observatory (BEO) and the North Slope near Utqiagvik (Barrow), Alaska and 2) multiple areas on the discontinuous permafrost region of the Seward Peninsula north of Nome, Alaska.Through observations, experiments, and synthesis with existing datasets, NGEE Arctic provided an enhanced knowledge base for multi-scale modeling and contributed to improved process representation at global pan-Arctic scales within the Department of Energy's Earth system Model (the Energy Exascale Earth System Model, or E3SM), and specifically within the E3SM Land Model component (ELM).In this data submission there are two sets of raw magnetic data (.bin and .stn for 2018 and base for 2023; raw rover mag for 2023 is in .csv) inside two .zip files that identify the year the mag data was collected. The data are proprietary format to Geometrics and can be opened and processed with MagMap2000 which can be downloaded for free at Geometrics website. There are also two processed data files *.csv for each year and two metadata files *.csv.

Structural, magneto transport and magnetic properties of Ruddlesden–Popper La 2-2x Sr 1+2x Mn 2 O 7 (0.42≤x≤0.52) layered manganites

The magneto transport of Ruddlesden–Popper, La 2-2x Sr 1+2x Mn 2 O 7 (0.42≤x≤0.52), 2-dimensional bilayered manganites have been investigated in a broad temperature range. The samples have been synthesized using the solid-state reaction method. Rietveld refinement of the X-ray diffraction data indicates the tetragonal structure formation with I4/mmm space group. The resistivity curves of the samples present a general characteristic of metal-insulator (MI) transition at certain temperature (T MI ). Besides, for samples with x = 0.48, 0.50, and 0.52, at a certain temperature (T CO ) well below T MI the charge ordering is also evident. Furthermore, the samples display a shallow upturn in resistivity below T min due to the Kondo like spin scattering effect, weak localization and electron-phonon interaction. The high temperature semiconducting (T>T MI ) region, the resistivity curve follows the 3D Mott’s variable hopping transport mechanism. The overall suppression of resistivity accounts for a substantial magnetoresistance by applying a magnetic field and the characteristic change in T MI , T CO , and T min are discussed. Temperature-dependent magnetization demonstrates the suppression of ferromagnetism and evident of antiferromagnetic nature with an apparent charge ordering with increasing concentration of Sr 2+ .

Electronic and magnetic properties of the topological semimetal candidate NdSbTe

ZrSiS-type materials represent a large material family with unusual coexistence of topological nonsymmorphic Dirac fermions and nodal-line fermions. As a special group of ZrSiS family, Ln SbTe ( L n = lanthanide rare - earth ) compounds provide a unique opportunity to explore new quantum phases due to the intrinsic magnetism induced by Ln . Here we report the single-crystal growth and characterization of NdSbTe, a previously unexplored Ln SbTe compound. NdSbTe has an antiferromagnetic ground state with field-driven metamagnetic transitions similar to other known Ln SbTe , but exhibits distinct enhanced electronic correlations characterized by large a Sommerfeld coefficient of 115 mJ / mol K 2 , which is the highest among the known Ln SbTe compounds. Furthermore, our transport studies have revealed the coupling with magnetism and signatures of Kondo localization. All these findings establish NdSbTe as a platform for observing phenomena arising from the interplay between magnetism, topology, and electron correlations.

Impact of the Lattice on Magnetic Properties and Possible Spin Nematicity in the S = 1 Triangular Antiferromagnet NiGa 2 S 4

NiGa 2 S 4 is a triangular lattice S = 1 system with strong two dimensionality of the lattice, actively discussed as a candidate to host spin-nematic order brought about by strong quadrupole coupling. Using Raman scattering spectroscopy we identify a phonon of E g symmetry which can modulate magnetic exchange J 1 and produce quadrupole coupling. Additionally, our Raman scattering results demonstrate a loss of local inversion symmetry on cooling, which we associate with sulfur vacancies. This will lead to disordered Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions, which can prevent long-range magnetic order. Using magnetic Raman scattering response we identify 160 K as a temperature of an upturn of magnetic correlations. Here, the temperature range below 160 K, but above 50 K where antiferromagnetic correlations start to increase, is a candidate for spin-nematic regime.

Crystal structure, magnetic properties and bonding analysis of M 3 Pt 23 Ge 11 (M=Ca, Sr, Ba and Eu)

The properties of Pt-based materials can be intriguing due to the importance of spin-orbit coupling for Pt. Herein, we report four new phases with formulas M 3 Pt 23 Ge 11 (M = Ca, Sr, Ba and Eu), which adopt the same structure type as Ce3Pt23Si11. Magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate that none of the phases is superconducting above 1.8 K, while for Eu 3 Pt 23 Ge 11 ferromagnetic ordering is observed at ~ 3 K. The low Curie temperature for that material compared to that of Eu 3 Pt 23 Si 11 may be due to its larger Eu–Eu distance. One potential factor that destabilizes the structure of other rare-earth based M 3 Pt 23 Ge 11 is demonstrated through COHP calculations.

Magnetic properties of the 110K superconducting phase in Pb-doped Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O thin films

The relaxation of the remnant moment induced in a nearly single phase high T(sub c) thin film of Pd-doped Bi-Sr-Ca-Cu-O was investigated. Measurements reveal that the relaxation obeys a logarithmic time dependence for observation times up to 2000 seconds. The temperature dependence of the initial magnetization of the film and its decay rate are obtained. The initial magnetization monotonically decreases. However, the decay rate normalized by initial magnetization has a peak at approximately 14 K for an applied field of 500 gauss. The peak shifts to lower temperature for a stronger magnetic field. These data are compared with existing data on other high T(sub c) superconducting materials.

Elemental fractionation and magnetic properties of melt-based Y1Ba2Cu3Oz containing excess Tb or Pt

Scanning electron microscopy of certain partially melted Y-Ba-Cu-O materials containing minority metal oxide species (Y:Tb:Ba:Cu = 1:0.1:2:3 or Y:Ba:Cu with Pt impurities), accompanied by both EDX and EMP analysis, indicates that the minority species (Tb or Pt) is quantitatively concentrated in a relatively small number of 123-type grains. High magnetic susceptibility and magnetization observed for these materials indicate that such elemental distribution is not detrimental to superconducting behavior.
