Status of the muon neutrino charged-current zero mesons cross section measurement in the NOvA near detector

NOvA is a long-baseline accelerator neutrino experiment at Fermilab whose physics goals include precision neutrino oscillation as well as cross-section measurements. We present the status of the measurement of muon neutrino charged-current cross section with zero mesons in the final state at the NOvA near detector. This measurement will be made with respect to the kinematics of the final state particles. Our chosen interaction channel is especially sensitive to quasielastic and meson exchange current interactions and will provide a handle for constraining the cross section systematic uncertainties in oscillation analyses in current and future experiments. For particle identification, we use a convolutional neural network (CNN) trained on individual particles simulated in the NOvA near detector that allows us to select the desired signal while reducing the potential bias from neutrino interaction modeling. Charged pion background constraining is further improved via Michel electron tagging.

Code Demonstration: Approximation of nearly-periodic symplectic maps via structure-preserving neural networks

In this notebook, we use the symplectic gyroceptron architecture from [Duruisseaux et al., 2022] to learn a surrogate map for the nearly-periodic symplectic flow map associated to a nearly-periodic Hamiltonian system composed of two nonlinearly coupled oscillators, where one of them oscillates significantly faster than the other: $\Big\lbrace$ $ {\dot{q}_1 = p_1 \hspace{5mm} \dot{p}_1 = -q_1 - \epsilon \partial_{q1}U(q_1 , q_2 )} \atop {\dot{q}_2 = \epsilon p_2 \hspace{4mm} \dot{p}_2 = -\epsilon q_2 - \epsilon \partial_{q2}U(q_1 , q_2 )}$. These equations of motion are the Hamilton's equations associated to the Hamiltonian $H_{\epsilon}(q_1,q_2,p_1,p_2)=\frac{1}{2}(q^2_1+p^2_1)+\frac{1}{2}\epsilon(q^2_2+p^2_2)+\epsilon$$U(q_1,q_2)$.

Sensitivity of Near-Surface Variables in the RUC Land Surface Model in the Weather Research and Forecasting Model

In this study, we investigate the parametric sensitivity of near-surface variables, such as sensible heat flux, latent heat flux, ground heat flux, hub-height wind speed and land surface temperature, to the parameters used in the Rapid Update Cycle (RUC) land surface model (LSM) during a wintertime and summertime period. The model simulations are compared with observations collected from the second Wind Forecast Improvement Project (WFIP2) field campaign. The results suggest that parameters related to snow/ice and thermal processes can have significant impact on the simulated near-surface variables. Out of the 11 examined parameters, only 6 of them have considerable influences on the model behaviors and explain about 60 ~ 80 % of the estimated total variance of the simulated variables. In addition, the magnitude of the parametric sensitivity varies with season. For instance, parameters associated with snow/ice processes are dominant during the wintertime whereas those associated with thermal processes are more important during the summertime. Furthermore, the impact of the identified parameters on the simulated variables is highly related to the topography. There is a high degree of sensitivity to the parameter values over the slope region. This points out the importance of collecting field observations over steep areas to better quantity the appropriate values of key parameters. Overall, our findings provide a better understanding of the RUC LSM behavior associated with parameter uncertainties and can be used to improve the forecasting skill of land surface processes via calibration of the most uncertain model parameters.

Hydraulic Testing of the Lost Lake Aquifer Near Recovery Wells RWM 6 and RWM 7

Hydrologic tests were conducted on the Lost Lake Aquifer Zone (LLAZ) at recovery wells RWM 6 and RWM 7 in accordance with the approved test plan (Dixon, 2023). The objective of the testing was to determine well performance parameters of RWM 6 and aquifer hydraulic properties near RWM 6 and RWM 7. Tests at RWM 6 consisted of a step-drawdown test to determine well performance parameters, a constant rate pump test to determine aquifer hydraulic properties, and an aquifer recovery test also used to determine aquifer hydraulic properties. Well performance parameters determined included specific capacity, well efficiency, and head loss coefficients. Prior to testing at RWM 6, a constant rate pump test was conducted at RWM 7. Data from this testing was used to determine aquifer hydraulic properties near RWM 7.

Theoretical Studies of Polar Systems near Ferroelectrics Quantum Critical Points (Final Report)

The PI has studied emergent quantum phases near polar quantum critical points. A first challenge was to develop a theoretical description of the observation that many polar materials undergo classical first-order transitions while displaying quantum criticality. The possibility of novel metallic states near polar quantum critical points was then studied; identification and characterization of a non-Fermi liquid phase was made in a multiband system. In dilute quantum critical polar metals, electronic coupling to polar energy fluctuations was shown to result in attractive electron-electron interactions and to superconductivity. A spin-phonon resonance measurement in applied magnetic field was proposed to determine the magnitude of spin-orbit mediated electron-phonon coupling; furthermore in the polar phase new field-induced phonon collective modes were identified with specific signatures for experiment. In order to keep current, the PI has also worked on other types of strongly correlated problems. With experimental groups, she has developed phenomenologies to identify and explain observed dynamical critical behaviors. The PI has studied the interplay of topology, fractionalization and deconfinement in a minimalist spin model. An emergent phase transition in a 1 + 1 frustrated spin nanotube has also been identified and characterized. The PI has also begun exploring criticality out of equilibrium, characterizing rich dynamical phases associated with photoinduced polar transitions.

An $\bar{F}$ Meshfree Treatment for Nearly Incompressible Materials

The computational modeling of nearly incompressible materials is a difficult task for many numerical methods, and even after several decades of investigation, it is still an active research area. This report seeks to address the treatment of incompressible materials in meshfree methods using a synergistic combination of two treatments. The first treatment is an $\bar{F}$ method, where the decomposed dilatational and deviatoric parts are calculated over different smoothing domains. The second treatment “activates” additional nodes throughout the domain to increase the flexibility of the model. We implement this synergistic combination in the context of the reproducing kernel particle method (RKPM) and present results for the Cook’s membrane benchmark problem. The results are compared with those using the composite tet10 finite element with a volume-averaged J formulation. We show that the combined treatment is an effective way to deal with nearly incompressible materials in a meshfree framework and compares well with other highly-effective treatments.

Near-threshold photoproduction of J/ of a proton with the CLAS12 experiment

The photo-production of vector mesons off the proton has long been established as an important tool to access the gluon content of the nucleon. In particular, the photo-production of J/Psi near the threshold energy has been related to the Gravitational Form Factors of the gluons which provide information about the mass and the force distributions in the nucleon. In this talk, I will present results on the near-threshold photoproduction of J/Psi using data taken in 2018 and 2019 by the CLAS12 detector at Jefferson Lab, with an electron beam impinging on a liquid-hydrogen target. This measurement is expected to provide direct insight on the gluons distribution inside the proton.

Wire Plane Transparency: Commissioning the Time Projection Chambers for the Short-Baseline Near Detector

The Short Baseline Near Detector (SBND) serves as the near detector for Fermilab's Short Baseline Neutrino (SBN) programme. It is a 112-ton Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber (LArTPC) designed to study neutrino-argon interactions and search for new physics phenomena such as sterile neutrinos. Situated just 110 m from the Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB), SBND just began its first physics run and is expected to record over two million neutrino interactions annually. Commissioning the time projection chambers of SBND is crucial for optimising detector performance. Each of the two anodes is composed of three charge-sensing wire planes which detect drifting ionisation electrons from charged particles traversing the detector. The wire planes, arranged with different 2D orientations, facilitate the 3D reconstruction of neutrino interactions. Electron transport induces signals on the first two planes, with the signal being collected by the rear plane. The first two induction planes require transparency to ensure all drift electrons reach the collection plane. This transparency depends on the bias voltages applied to the wires and the spacing between them. Fine-tuning these bias voltages ensures the optimisation of wire plane transparency. In this poster, I will demonstrate how transparency can be assessed by analysing the waveforms from cosmic-ray muon tracks traversing the detector at specific orientations.

Near Term Reliability and Resilience: Revisiting Resilience Metrics for the Electric Grid

This report presents the metrics employed in the Near-Term Reliability and Resilience (NTRR) project to study the inter-dependencies between electric and natural gas infrastructures, particularly under challenging conditions. These metrics were developed and applied to evaluate the reliability and resilience of the electric grid and natural gas systems in near-term scenarios (within the next 10 years) involving extreme weather events and major supply disruptions. The report defines the metrics, explains how they are calculated, and describes the process by which they are used to evaluate reliability and resilience across simulated scenarios. It also demonstrates how the resilience metrics integrate with other project activities and summarizes the software tools deployed to calculate and visualize the results.

Timing reconstruction utilising multiple detection subsystems at the Short-Baseline Near Detector experiment

The Short-Baseline Near Detector (SBND) is the near detector of the Short-Baseline Neutrino Program, located only 110 m away from the Booster Neutrino Beam (BNB) target at Fermilab (Illinois, USA). SBND employs key detection technologies: a 112-ton Liquid Argon Time Projection Chamber for ionisation electrons, an advanced Photon Detection System (PDS) made up of photomultiplier tubes and X-ARAPUCAs for scintillation light, and a 4π coverage of Cosmic Ray Taggers (CRTs) for cosmic muons. This setup offers an exceptional energy, spatial and timing reconstruction of neutrino interactions. In this poster, we present ongoing timing reconstruction efforts of the PDS and CRTs, as well as combining complementary information across multiple detection subsystems to improve the timing resolution. This results in nanosecond level timing information that can be leveraged as an analysis tool, including the reconstruction of the BNB substructure to accept or reject signals detected in-between neutrino bunches as well as a timing-based discrimination for cosmic rejection.

Status of the Measurement of Neutrino-Electron Elastic Scattering in the NOvA Near Detector

Neutrino–electron elastic scattering is a purely leptonic process with a precisely calculable Standard Model cross section, providing an \textit{in situ} constraint on accelerator neutrino flux predictions. Using data collected with the NOvA Near Detector in forward horn current mode, we perform a measurement of neutrino–electron elastic scattering and apply a flux-constraint technique based on the reconstructed electron-energy spectrum. This approach improves the precision of the predicted $\nu_\mu$ flux and enhances the accuracy of near-detector cross-section measurements. The analysis also demonstrates a practical framework for flux constraints in current and future accelerator neutrino experiments.

The System for on-Axis Neutrino Detection at the DUNE Near Detector complex

The Deep Underground Neutrino Experiment Near Detector complex aims at constraining the systematic uncertainties and deconvolving the neutrino beam flux and cross-section models. The System for on-Axis Neutrino Detection (SAND) is the Near Detector component permanently on-axis. SAND is based on the 0.6 T superconducting magnet and electromagnetic calorimeter previously used in the KLOE experiment. The 40 m3 magnetic volume will be filled with an active target/tracker system. One considered option foresees an upstream liquid Argon active target (about 1.5 t) and a Straw Tube Tracker (about 5 t). In this talk the design of SAND will be described and its performances discussed in view of the SAND primary goals, namely the beam monitoring and neutrino flux measurements.

Muon Radiography with the NOvA Near Detector

Information on the geological and man-made structures, directly contributing to the overburden of the NOvA Near Detector, located 100 m underground at Fermilab, are extracted from the cosmic muon data accumulated in the period April 2015 - October 2016. Results of this radiographic analysis of cosmic data are obtained by exploiting the acceptance symmetries of the NOvA detector. Radiographic maps of the overburden variations are acquired without subtracting the surface muon flux (free sky data) and without MC simulation of the cosmic muons attenuation in the homogeneous and flat overburden. By directly subtracting the angular muon track data measured by the NOvA Near Detector, arriving from directions having the same attenuation length (in the flat-surface approximation) and belonging to the acceptance regions with the same reconstruction efficiency, one can efficiently obtain two-dimensional differential radiographic maps.

SAND - System for on-Axis Neutrino Detection - in the DUNE Near Detector Complex

The DUNE experiment aims to precisely measure the long baseline neutrino oscillation parameters. The DUNE Far Detector consists of four liquid argon time-projection chambers (total LAr mass of 17 kton for each cryostat), that will be installed at the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in South Dakota, 1300 km from the proton beam target. The Near Detector complex, located at Fermilab, is fundamental for limiting the systematic uncertainties, due to the neutrino/antineutrino flux and to the cross-section. It comprises three complementary detectors: ND-Lar, ND-Gar and SAND (System for on-Axis Neutrino Detection). ND-Lar and ND-Gar can move off-axis, while SAND is the only detector permanently on-axis, whose primary goal is to monitor the beam and to measure the flux. In this talk, the SAND design and the expected performances will be described together with its role within the Near Detector complex for the DUNE physics program.

Light Dark Matter Analysis Using NO$\nu$A Near Detector

Dark matter (DM) is believed to account for 85$\%$ of the matter content of the Universe. The leading dark matter candidate is the WIMP (weakly interacting massive particles). Light dark matter (LDM) refers to WIMP candidates with a mass of less than 1 GeV. The concept of LDM has been developed in order to explain the 511 keV $\gamma$-rays from the galactic bulge, as observed by the INTEGRAL satellite. There are a lot of candidates for light DM, and these candidates span a wide range of potential masses and couplings to the visible sector. Probing the vast parameter space of light-dark matter requires a correspondingly broad experimental program that can include neutrino fixed target experiments. NOvA is a high luminosity long-baseline fixed-target accelerator neutrino experiment at Fermilab that can provide a potentially interesting probe in searching for signatures of DM scattering with electrons in its near detectors. We aim to search for the MeV-scale dark matter particles that might be generated within the NuMI beam and produce detectable electron scattering signals in NOvA Near Detector. In this talk, we present our analysis of the single electron events using a simulated sample and show the sensitivity of the NOvA experiment.

J/Psi Photoproduction Near Threshold With CLAS12

The structure of the proton is comprised of quarks and a sea of gluons. A mechanism that can extract the characteristics of the hidden-color correlations of the nuclear wavefunction is the production of charm near threshold. Due to the fact that momentum transfer is large near threshold in the production of J/ψ , all three valence quarks must act coherently to ex- change energy for the reaction to occur. Models have been developed to predict the nature of J/ψ photoproduction at these specific energies. These include production mechanisms with the two-gluon and three-gluon exchanges. The transferred momentum dependence of the differential cross sections are sensitive to the gluonic form factors, which describe the distribution of color charge in the proton. The CLAS12 detector is capable of measuring J/ψ photoproduction at the energy range close to the threshold. Work showcased in this dissertation encompasses the preparation of the CLAS12 experiments, including the optimization of tracking reconstruction through the study of the Torus magnetic field. In terms of software, contributions were made to the CLAS12 Event Builder, a key stage of reconstruction where event-by-event information is summarized for efficient data analysis. After the run periods were successfully completed, analysis of the RG-A data commenced and an analysis framework was developed to measure the differential and total cross sections of J/ψ photoproduction in Hall B.
