Method and system for determining a geographical location of an unmanned aerial vehicle flown in proximity to a power grid

A method for determining geolocation of a UAV near a power grid includes detecting, via a transceiver, a carrier signal transmitted from a first grid node to identify the node's fixed geolocation. A response signal may be transmitted from a second grid node in response to the carrier signal to identify a fixed geolocation of the second grid node, or the UAV may process the carrier signal. A processor determines time-of-flight of the carrier signal, e.g., using the response signal, and derives the UAV's geolocation using the time-of-flight. Determining time-of-flight may include referencing a lookup table indexed by time-of-arrival at the transceiver of the modulated carrier and response signals. A timestamp may indicate time-of-transmission of the carrier and response signals, respectively. Deriving geolocation may include subtracting time-of-transmission of the response signal from that of the carrier signal. A system includes the processor and transceiver.

Local and global decision fusion for cyber-physical system abnormality detection

Monitoring nodes may generate a series of current monitoring node values over time representing current operation of a cyber-physical system. A decision fusion computer platform may receive, from a local status determination module, an indication of whether each node has an initial local status of “normal”/“abnormal” and a local certainty score (with higher values of the local certainty score representing greater likelihood of abnormality). The computer platform may also receive, from a global status determination module, an indication of whether the system has an initial global status of “normal”/“abnormal” and a global certainty score. The computer platform may output, for each node, a fused local status of “normal” or “abnormal,” at least one fused local status being based on the initial global status. The decision fusion computer platform may also output a fused global status of “normal” or “abnormal” based on at least one initial local status.

Scalable hierarchical abnormality localization in cyber-physical systems

A cyber-physical system may have monitoring nodes that generate a series of current monitoring node values over time that represent current operation of the system. A hierarchical abnormality localization computer platform accesses a multi-level hierarchy of elements, and elements in a first level of the hierarchy are associated with elements in at least one lower level of the hierarchy and at least some elements may be associated with monitoring nodes. The computer platform may then determine, based on feature vectors and a decision boundary, an abnormality status for a first element in the highest level of the hierarchy. If the abnormality status indicates an abnormality, the computer platform may determine an abnormality status for elements, associated with the first element, in at least one level of the hierarchy lower than the level of the first element. These determinations may be repeated until an abnormality is localized to a monitoring node.

Systems and methods for global cyber-attack or fault detection model

An industrial asset may have monitoring nodes that generate current monitoring node values representing a current operation of the industrial asset. An abnormality detection computer may detect when a monitoring node is currently being attacked or experiencing a fault based on a current feature vector, calculated in accordance with current monitoring node values, and a detection model that includes a decision boundary. A model updater (e.g., a continuous learning model updater) may determine an update time-frame (e.g., short-term, mid-term, long-term, etc.) associated with the system based on trigger occurrence detection (e.g., associated with a time-based trigger, a performance-based trigger, an event-based trigger, etc.). The model updater may then update the detection model in accordance with the determined update time-frame (and, in some embodiments, continuous learning).

Central Compact Finite‐Difference Scheme With High Spectral Resolution for KdV Equation

This work presents a combination of cell‐node and cell‐centered compact finite difference scheme for the approximation of third derivatives involved in Korteweg–de Vries (KdV) equations. This approach employs a half‐shifted derivative construction at cell centers, avoiding the need for compact interpolation, thereby removing transfer errors; hence, it improves spectral resolution and maintains high‐order accuracy. Fourier analysis is performed to show the spectral properties of the proposed formulation, which provides higher spectral resolutions as compared to node‐based compact schemes. A filtering strategy is incorporated to suppress high‐frequency oscillations without compromising the accuracy of the numerical scheme, and the total variation diminishing Runge Kutta (TVDRK3) method is applied for time integration. Numerical experiments on linear, nonlinear, and coupled KdV systems are conducted, and a comparative analysis with cell‐node compact schemes confirms that the proposed scheme consistently reduces errors by up to an order of magnitude and achieves high spectral resolution properties.

Yet another parameter-free shape optimization method

The use of node coordinates as design variables in shape optimization offers a larger design space than computer-aided design (CAD)-based shape parameterizations. It also allows for the optimization of legacy designs, i.e., a finite element mesh from an existing design can be readily optimized to meet new performance requirements without involving a CAD model. However, it is well known that the node coordinate parameterization method is fraught with numerical difficulties, which makes it impractical to use. This has led to several of “parameter-free” shape optimization methods that seek the advantages and avoid the pitfalls of the naïve node coordinate parameterization method. These methods come in two main varieties: sensitivity filtering (or gradient smoothing) and consistent filtering. The latter is analogous to the density filter method used in topology optimization (TO). In this work, we use the PDE filter from TO and energy-based filters to implement consistent shape optimization filtering schemes easily and efficiently. Numerical experiments demonstrate that consistent methods are more robust than sensitivity filtering methods.

GrAMME: Semisupervised Learning Using Multilayered Graph Attention Models

Modern data analysis pipelines are becoming increasingly complex due to the presence of multiview information sources. While graphs are effective in modeling complex relationships, in many scenarios, a single graph is rarely sufficient to succinctly represent all interactions, and hence, multilayered graphs have become popular. Though this leads to richer representations, extending solutions from the single-graph case is not straightforward. Consequently, there is a strong need for novel solutions to solve classical problems, such as node classification, in the multilayered case. In this article, we consider the problem of semisupervised learning with multilayered graphs. Though deep network embeddings, e.g., DeepWalk, are widely adopted for community discovery, we argue that feature learning with random node attributes, using graph neural networks, can be more effective. To this end, we propose to use attention models for effective feature learning and develop two novel architectures, GrAMME-SG and GrAMME-Fusion, that exploit the interlayer dependences for building multilayered graph embeddings. Using empirical studies on several benchmark data sets, we evaluate the proposed approaches and demonstrate significant performance improvements in comparison with the state-of-the-art network embedding strategies. The results also show that using simple random features is an effective choice, even in cases where explicit node attributes are not available.

A Novel N Staging System for Predicting Survival in Patients with Medullary Thyroid Cancer

Introduction: Despite the crucially prognostic value of lymph node metastasis (LNM) in patients with medullary thyroid cancer (MTC), only the LNM compartment alone was reflected in the 8th edition of the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) system. Objective: This study aimed to incorporate the metastatic lymph node number and metastatic lymph node ratio to generate a more accurate and appropriate N staging system for patients with MTC based on recursive partitioning analysis. Design, Setting, and Patients: Two cohorts were included in the analysis, including 1374 MTC patients from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database as the derivation cohort, and 164 patients from Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center as the validation cohort. The predictive performance of the alternative proposed N staging system was compared with that of the 8th AJCC system by using the Harrell concordance index (C-index) and the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC). Results: In the derivation cohort, the C-index and the AUC at 10 years were 0.778 and 0.789, respectively, for the novel N staging system, and 0.749 and 0.741, respectively, for the 8th AJCC N staging system. Similar trends were also observed in the validation cohort. The proposed N staging system had a better prognostic performance. Conclusion: With some improvements, the novel N staging system for MTC suggested from this research may be assessed for potential adoption in the next edition of the AJCC N staging system.

Trends in Regional Nodal Management of Breast Cancer Patients with Low Nodal Burden

Background: American College of Surgeons Oncology Group Z0011 confirms the safety of omitting axillary lymph node dissection (ALND) and regional nodal irradiation (RNI) in breast cancer patients with one to two positive sentinel lymph nodes (SLNs), without compromising disease-free survival (DFS) and overall survival (OS). In contrast, the NCIC MA20 trial showed improved DFS in node-positive patients undergoing ALND and RNI. We sought to examine how these data have influenced the management of patients with limited nodal burden. Methods: Using the National Cancer Database, patients diagnosed between 2010 and 2015 and who met the criteria for Z0011 were identified. Logistic regression was used to analyze factors associated with practice patterns. The Cox proportional hazards model was used to assess the association of ALND and RNI with OS. Results: Omission of ALND in Z0011-eligible patients reached 89.2% in 2015. This Z0011-compliant group was more likely to undergo RNI compared with the non-compliant group (36.4% vs. 31.3%; p < 0.05), with RNI increasing to 43.8% by 2015. Factors associated with the use of RNI included later year of diagnosis [odds ratio (OR) 1.8, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.6–2.1], hormone receptor-negative tumor (OR 1.2, 95% CI 1.1–1.4), grade 3 tumor (OR 1.2, 95% CI 1.1–1.3), treatment at a non-academic site (OR 1.2, 95% CI 1.1–1.3) and two versus one positive SLN (OR 2.0, 95% CI 1.8–2.2). With 43 months median follow-up, RNI was not associated with improved OS. Conclusion: Since the publication of Z0011, the omission of ALND has become widespread; however nearly half of these women now receive RNI. The optimal radiation therapy approach for this low nodal burden population warrants further study.

Open-Source Contributions to Arbiter2

Login nodes at High-Performance Computing (HPC) sites are shared resources used by a multitude of users to compile, test and submit jobs to the batch system. Because these nodes are shared by multiple users at any time, if a minority of users are using a significant proportion of the resources of the node (CPU, memory, etc.), other users' tasks may be negatively impacted. Arbiter2 is an open-source project developed by the University of Utah that aims to prevent these occurrences by dynamically limiting the resources of users depending on whether they are excessively using resources. INL has sought to adapt and develop Arbiter2 for a potential deployment at INL and plans on upstreaming the changes and improvements so that other HPC sites running Arbiter2 can benefit from their work.
