Upgrading of AMTRAN on the datacraft DC 6024

A number of new software extensions and modifications to the AMTRAN system were completed. These modifications include input/output alterations, one-dimensional and two-dimensional array improvements, and disk storage of data enhancements. In order to promote a better understanding of the AMTRAN system software structure, a general description of the AMTRAN modules and their interrelationships was provided. A few sample statements have also been traced through the compilation and execution stages in order to illustrate the flow of system logic. In addition, the previous documentation was updated to reflect these modifications.

Interaction between step fuel injectors on opposite walls in a supersonic combustor model

Results are presented from an experimental investigation of perpendicular, hydrogen fuel injection and combustion from opposing walls in a scramjet combustor model using a longitudinally staged laterally inline step-injection configuration. The model represents a portion of the flow in the Langley integrated modular scramjet engine combustor operating at a flight Mach number of 7. When operating at a ratio of jet pressure to free-stream dynamic pressure of 3, the injectors produce a bulk equivalence ratio of unity. This investigation represents part of a continuing study of the modular engine fuel injectors and is specifically designed to eliminate the adverse lateral pressure gradient observed at the injector location in a previous test. Flow survey contours at three axial locations, ranging from one-third of the engine combustor length to the total engine combustor length, are used to determine mixing efficiency and fuel distribution. Wall static pressures are analyzed by using one-dimensional theory to determine the combustion efficiency. Results show a significant improvement over previous injector designs tested in this duct geometry.

Two-dimensional, time-dependent MHD description of interplanetary disturbances Simulation of high speed solar wind interactions

A two-dimensional, time-dependent nonlinear MHD model is used to simulate the general features of multiply-interacting, transient solar wind flows. The major advantage of the two-dimensional model over the one-dimensional one is the proper consideration of azimuthal gradients. In addition, the new model can provide contour maps for disturbed plasma properties in the equatorial plane, thereby enabling one to perform essential tests of the physical assumptions through direct comparison with space probe data.

Recent progress in finite-volume calculations for wing-fuselage combinations

Progress in the application of finite-volume methods to the calculation of transonic potential flows past general wing-body combinations is reviewed. Two different methods of generating boundary-conforming grids are investigated, and the results compared to provide an estimate of solution sensitivity to grid geometry. Both conservative and quasi-conservative difference schemes are used in one of the coordinate systems. Results show that the error introduced by the quasi-conservative formulation seems to be small, although a one-dimensional analysis suggests that schemes of this type do not necessarily produce mass-conserving shocks. Comparison of calculated results with experimental data for realistic fuselage geometries clearly shows the importance of modelling the effect of fuselage geometry upon the wing pressure distribution.

Implicit computations of unsteady transonic flow governed by the full-potential equation in conservation form

An alternating-direction implicit algorithm is presented for solving the conservative, full-potential equation for unsteady, transonic flow. A new development is the time-linearization of the density function. This linearization reduces the solution process from one of solving a system of two equations at each mesh point to one of solving a single equation. Two sample cases are computed. First, a one-dimensional traveling shock wave is computed and compared with the analytic solution. Second, a two-dimensional case is computed of a flow field that results from a thickening and subsequently thinning airfoil. The resulting flow field, which includes a traveling shock wave, is compared to the flow field obtained from the low-frequency, small-disturbance, transonic equation.

Application of second-order-accurate Total Variation Diminishing (TVD) schemes to the Euler equations in general geometries

A one-parameter family of explicit and implicit second-order-accurate, entropy satisfying, total variation diminishing (TVD) schemes was developed by Harten. These TVD schemes were the property of not generating spurious oscillations for one-dimensional nonlinear scalar hyperbolic conservation laws and constant coefficient hyperbolic systems. Application of these methods to one- and two-dimensional fluid flows containing shocks (in Cartesian coordinates) yields highly accurate nonoscillatory numerical solutions. The goal of this work is to expand these methods to the multidimensional Euler equations in generalized coordinate systems. Some numerical results of shock waves impinging on cylindrical bodies are compared with MacCormack's method.

Viscous, resistive magnetohydrodynamic stability computed by spectral techniques

Expansions in Chebyshev polynomials are used to study the linear stability of one-dimensional magnetohydrodynamic quasi-equilibria, in the presence of finite resistivity and viscosity. The method is modeled on the one used by Orszag in accurate computation of solutions of the Orr-Sommerfeld equation. Two Reynolds-like numbers involving Alfven speeds, length scales, kinematic viscosity, and magnetic diffusivity govern the stability boundaries, which are determined by the geometric mean of the two Reynolds-like numbers. Marginal stability curves, growth rates versus Reynolds-like numbers, and growth rates versus parallel wave numbers are exhibited. A numerical result that appears general is that instability has been found to be associated with inflection points in the current profile, though no general analytical proof has emerged. It is possible that nonlinear subcritical three-dimensional instabilities may exist, similar to those in Poiseuille and Couette flow.

One-dimensional unsteady modeling of supersonic inlet unstart/restart

A quasi-one-dimensional unsteady inviscid analysis of mixed-compression supersonic inlet flow is presented with emphasis on modeling of inlet unstart/restart phenomena. Numerical solution of the governing equations of motion is performed using a computationally efficient shock-capturing split-characteristics algorithm. Inlet unstart is modeled using a mass balance method which relates the expelled normal shock position ahead of the inlet cowl to the amount of spilled mass flow over the inlet housing. Comparison of computed results with experimental data for an axisymmetric inlet at a free-stream Mach number of 2.50 shows quite reasonable agreement over an entire unstart/restart transient which includes centerbody translation and retraction as well as bypass mass flow variations.

Implicit Numerical Methods in Meteorology

The development of a fully implicit finite-difference model, whose time step is chosen solely to resolve accurately the physical flow of interest is discussed. The method is based on an operator factorization which reduces the dimensionality of the implicit approach: at each time step only (spatially) one-dimensional block-tridiagonal linear systems must be solved. The scheme uses two time levels and is second-order accurate in time. Compact implicit spatial differences are used, yielding fourth-order accuracy both vertically and horizontally. In addition, the development of a fully interactive computer code is discussed. With this code the user will have a choice of models, with various levels of accuracy and sophistication, which are imbedded, as subsets of the fully implicit 3D code.

Evaluation of data obtained from atmospheric laser Doppler velocimeter

The Doppler lidar velocimeter produces a variety of kinds of data. Besides the line of sight velocity components, there are the reflected amplitudes and the Doppler widths. Computer graphics software for displaying these data was produced. Different methods of presentation are needed for the various items. A picture was produced as pictures are often the best way to gain understanding. The individual lidar scans form a crosshatch pattern. Thus one-dimensional measurements fit together to form a two-dimensional whole. A pair of velocity measurements at a point combine to form a wind measurement with direction and magnitude. This gives a forest of wind vectors. The goal is to find a recognizable pattern to these trees. Often it is necessary to show only part of the information. That is, show only the wind direction not its magnitude or reduce the wind to streamlines of air flow. In other cases data are reduced to contour plots. Just enough contour lines are included to show the picture described.

Laminate-Moisture-Analysis Computer Program

Diffusion and deleterious effects of moisture predicted. General One-Dimensional, One Material Moisture Analysis computer program developed to predict moisture gradient across composite laminate where moisture enters two surfaces and flows in direction between these surfaces. Designed to monitor flow of moisture in Space Shuttle Orbiter payload bay doors but applicable for general use. Program written in FORTRAN IV.

Optimization of the lithium/thionyl chloride battery

The progress which has been made in modeling the lithium/thionyl chloride cell over the past year and proposed research for the coming year are discussed. A one-dimensional mathematical model for a lithium/thionyl chloride cell has been developed and used to investigate methods of improving cell performance. During the course of the work a problem was detected with the banded solver being used. It was replaced with one more reliable. Future work may take one of two directions. The one-dimensional model could be augmented to include additional features and to investigate in more detail the cell temperature behavior, or a simplified two-dimensional model for the spirally wound design of this battery could be developed to investigate the heat flow within the cell.

Parabolic heavy ion flow in the polar magnetosphere

Recent observations by the Dynamics Explorer 1 satellite over the dayside polar cap magnetosphere have indicated downward flows of heavy ions such as O(+), O(2+), N(+), and N(2+) with flow velocities of the order 1 km/s (Lockwood et al., 1985). These downward flows were interpreted as the result of 'parabolic' flow of these heavy ionospheric ions from a source region associated with the polar cleft topside ionosphere. Here, a two-dimensional kinetic model is utilized to elicit features of the transport of very low energy O(+) ions from the cleft ionosphere. Bulk parameter (density, flux, thermal energies, etc.) distributions in the noon-midnight meridian plane illustrate the effects of varying convection electric fields and source energies. The results illustrate that, particularly under conditions of weak convection electric fields and weak ion heating in the cleft region, much of the intermediate altitude polar cap magnetosphere may be populated by downward flowing heavy ions. It is further shown how two-dimensional transport effects may alter the characteristic vertical profiles of densities and fluxes from ordinary profiles computed in one-dimensional steady-state models.

Vectorizable implicit algorithms for the flux-difference split, three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations

The computational efficiency of four vectorizable implicit algorithms is assessed when applied to calculate steady-state solutions to the three-dimensional, incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in general coordinates. Two of these algorithms are characterized as hybrid schemes; that is, they combine some approximate factorization in two coordinate directions with relaxation in the remaining spatial direction. The other two algorithms utilize an approximate factorization approach which yields two-factor algorithms for three-dimensional systems. All four algorithms are implemented in identical high-resolution upwind schemes for the flux-difference split Navier-Stokes equations. These highly nonlinear schemes are obtained by extending an implicit Total Variation Diminishing (TVD) scheme recently developed for linear one-dimensional systems of hyperbolic conservation laws to the three-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations. The computation of vortical flow over a sharp-edged, thin delta wing has been chosen as a common numerical test case. The convergence of the algorithms is discussed and the accuracy of the computed flow-field results is assessed. The validity of the present results are demonstrated by a comparison with experimental data.

Turbulence structure at high shear rate

The structure of homogeneous turbulence in the presence of a high shear rate is studied using results obtained from three-dimensional time-dependent numerical simulations of the Navier-Stokes equations on a grid of 512 x 128 x 128 node points. It is shown that high shear rate enhances the streamwise fluctuating motion to such an extent that a highly anisotropic turbulence state with a one-dimensional velocity field and two-dimensional small-scale turbulence develops asymptotically as total shear increases. Instantaneous velocity fields show that high shear rate in homogeneous turbulent shear flow produces structures which are similar to the streaks present in the viscous sublayer of turbulent boundary layers.

ULF waves at Comets Halley and Giacobini-Zinner - Comparison with theory

Because the Doppler shift occurring in ion-cyclotron resonance is equal and opposite to that associated with the flow of the solar wind plasma past the observer, one should be able to monitor the amplitude of waves due to the cyclotron resonant instability by examining the amplitude of waves near the gyrofrequency of the respective ions as measured in the spacecraft frame. This expectation has been checked by using one-dimensional electromagnetic hybrid simulations of two ion pickup. This simplifies the comparison of theoretical predictions of wave growth with the observations. Distant from both comets the wave amplitudes are very weak. As the comet is approached the wave amplitude grows. These observations agree qualitatively with the simulations which predict amplitudes that depend on the properties of the injected beams and the local injection rate.

Mole fraction imaging of transverse injection in a ducted supersonic flow

Laser-induced iodine fluorescence has been used to generate two-dimensional images of the mixing characteristics of air injected transversely as underexpanded jets behind a rearward-facing step into a ducted Mach 2 freestream; the images thus obtained were processed digitally in order to yield planar-injectant mole fraction distributions. The resulting planar images represent a three-dimensional data base of the injectant mole fraction distribution throughout the flowfield which is then used to reconstruct images exhibiting mole-fraction distributions normal to the duct. These images furnish a direct representation of the evolution of supersonic mixing along the duct, and facilitate the development of one-dimensional mixing schedules on the basis of the three-dimensional data base.

Constructing space difference schemes which satisfy a cell entropy inequality

A numerical methodology for solving convection problems is presented, using finite difference schemes which satisfy the second law of thermodynamics on a cell-by-cell basis in addition to the usual conservation laws. It is shown that satisfaction of a cell entropy inequality is sufficient, in some cases, to guarantee nonlinear stability. Some details are given for several one-dimensional problems, including the quasi-one-dimensional Euler equations applied to flow in a nozzle.
