A total of 17-1/2 stereopairs of lunar surface rocks and soil was taken on the Apollo 14 mission. The closeup stereopair photographs are presented with a preliminary interpretation for those interested in lunar soil formation, impact phenomena, and soil mechanics.
Boundary delineation from space photographs as a precursor to area typing was studied for characterization of land use for resource mapping near Alice Springs, Australia, where both boundary detection and categorization are complicated by the variations of the landscape. The detection and meaning of boundaries, and sources of confusion during categorization are discussed.
In the Apollo 15 mission, a mapping camera system and a 61 cm optical bar, high resolution panoramic camera, as well as a laser altimeter were used. The panoramic camera is described, having several distortion sources, such as cylindrical shape of the negative film surface, the scanning action of the lens, the image motion compensator, and the spacecraft motion. Film products were processed on a specifically designed analytical plotter.
The first photographs of the moon taken with earthshine illumination by the Apollo 15 crew were examined. Emphasis in the analysis was placed on a comparison of predicted exposures and obtained exposures. The results of the investigation indicate the following: (1) The predicted exposure of the maria areas and the obtained exposures were in reasonably close agreement. (2) The apparent-albedo values obtained for the floor of Aristarchus Crater are seven times greater than those for the maria.
The lunar close-up steroscopic camera was used successfully on Apollo 11, 12, and 14 flights. It functioned without any technical faults and was judged convenient to use by all three crews. It recorded a variety of surface textures in the lunar soil, both disturbed and undisturbed, a number of rock surfaces in the undisturbed condition, and a number of surface samples of materials brought to the moon whose interaction with the lunar soil was to be tested. A resolution of approximately 80 microns was aimed for in the design of the camera and was indeed obtained on all pictures. Stereoscopy played a major part in interpreting surface textures and small scale structure.
A high altitude photomosaic resource map of Site 29 was produced which provided an opportunity to test photo interpretation accuracy of natural vegetation resource features when mapped at a small (1:133,400) scale. Helicopter reconnaissance over 144 previously selected test points revealed a highly adequate level of photo interpretation accuracy. In general, the reasons for errors could be accounted for. The same photomosaic resource map enabled construction of interpretive land use overlays. Based on features of the landscape, including natural vegetation types, judgements for land use suitability were made and have been presented for two types of potential land use. These two, agriculture and urbanization, represent potential land use conflicts.
Apollo 9 photographs of the region northwest of the Gulf of Tadjura were studied. The occurrence of a large region of basement rocks, probably crystalline in nature, with a strongly faulted overlayer was recognized and has been named the Tadjura uplift. Study of this region is adding detailed knowledge to the literature on the phenomenon of plate drift in the southern Red Sea region.
An evaluation of multispectral photographic techniques for optical penetration of water in the northeastern United States and the Gulf of Mexico coastal waters is presented. The spectral band (493 to 543 nanom), when exposed to place the water mass at about unit density on the photographic emulsion, was found to provide the best water penetration, independent of altitude or time of day, as long as solar glitter from the surface of the water is avoided. An isoluminous color technique was perfected, which eliminates the dimension of brightness from a multispectral color presentation.
Photographic scales providing resource data for decision making processes of land use and a legend system for barren lands, water resources, natural vegetation, agricultural, urban, and industrial lands in hierarchical framework are applied to various remote sensing techniques. Two natural vegetation resource and land use maps for a major portion of Maricopa County, Arizona are also produced.
The problem of optical contamination in the form of particulates in the vicinity of a spacecraft has been a source of concern for any astronomical experiment that must be performed in sunlight. This concern prompted a photographic photometric experiment on Apollo 15 to measure the brightness of the residual contamination cloud as well as the cloud produced by dumping waste water overboard. An upper limit of 10 to the minus 12.3 power B (B designates the brightness of the solar disc) was placed on the residual cloud at a 90 deg sun angle, which is comparable to the zodiacal light. The brightness of the cloud produced by the waste dump was estimated to be 10 to the minus 9.2 power B. It was observed to decrease rapidly to 10 to the -11.6 power B in minutes, then fluctuate in brightness for at least 25 minutes as additional material left the spacecraft. The cloud was observed to consist of individually resolved particle tracks estimated to be particles ranging from millimeters to centimeters in diameter in addition to a background of unresolved particles with an average diameter of 10.5 microns. Most of the tracks proceeded in straight-line paths from the dump nozzle. Several tracks violated this direction, apparently having been scattered by collisions. A few tracks appeared to have definite curvatures, which are believed to be caused by charged particle interactions.

Discussion of the selection of a type of imaging system for a specific mission which will maximize the return of scientific data while keeping development risk and cost to acceptable limits. A representative example is given which shows that the parameters of the optimizing process range from the scientific objectives through the engineering and programming constraints of the spacecraft and mission, to the characteristics of the types of systems. The selections for all planetary missions flown to date have been imaging systems using image tube cameras. Film cameras and mechanical scan cameras, however, have unique advantages which should find application in planetary exploration.
Three-dimensional system uses two additional mirrors and path compensators. It is essentially three mutually-orthogonal one-dimensional systems with common focus. Laser beam is split into four parts, three of which are object beams; and fourth is reference beam. Size of each ellipse depends on magnitude of velocity vectors.
Comparison of multispectral imagery and aerial surveys of Massachusetts bays
A circular grating is photographed through a phase object which deforms the image of the grating lines. By superimposing these deformed lines with a master grating on photographic film, moire patterns are observed. These patterns are interpreted as fringes of constant radial derivative.
This experiment obtained imagery of the earth and the moon at a series of wavelength intervals in the near ultraviolet. These photographs were used to aid in the interpretation of the UV appearance of other planets in the solar system, especially mars and venus. The filter and film characteristics are described, as well as the ozone absorption coefficient curve.
Discussion is made of the Apollo 15 and 16 metric and panoramic cameras which provided photographs for accurate topographic portrayal of the lunar surface using photogrammetric methods. Nine stereoscopic models of Apollo 16 metric photographs and three models of panoramic photographs were evaluated photogrammetrically in support of the Apollo 16 geologic investigations. Four of the models were used to collect profile data for crater morphology studies; three models were used to collect evaluation data for the frequency distributions of lunar slopes; one model was used to prepare a map of the Apollo 16 traverse area; and one model was used to determine elevations of the Cayley Formation. The remaining three models were used to test photogrammetric techniques using oblique metric and panoramic camera photographs. Two preliminary contour maps were compiled and a high-oblique metric photograph was rectified.
