Scalable submicrometer additive manufacturing

High-throughput fabrication techniques for generating arbitrarily complex three-dimensional structures with nanoscale features are desirable across a broad range of applications. Two-photon lithography (TPL)–based submicrometer additive manufacturing is a promising candidate to fill this gap. However, the serial point-by-point writing scheme of TPL is too slow for many applications. Attempts at parallelization either do not have submicrometer resolution or cannot pattern complex structures. We overcome these difficulties by spatially and temporally focusing an ultrafast laser to implement a projection-based layer-by-layer parallelization. This increases the throughput up to three orders of magnitude and expands the geometric design space. We demonstrate this by printing, within single-digit millisecond time scales, nanowires with widths smaller than 175 nanometers over an area one million times larger than the cross-sectional area.

PETSc Users Manual Revision 3.8

This manual describes the use of PETSc for the numerical solution of partial differential equations and related problems on high-performance computers. The Portable, Extensible Toolkit for Scientific Computation (PETSc) is a suite of data structures and routines that provide the building blocks for the implementation of large-scale application codes on parallel (and serial) computers. PETSc uses the MPI standard for all message-passing communication.

SIERRA Multimechanics Module: Aria Thermal Theory Manual (Version 4.46)

This document describes the theoretical foundation of thermal analysis in Sierra Mechanics. The SIERRA Multimechanics Module: Aria, henceforth referred to as Aria for brevity, was developed at Sandia National Laboratories under the ASC program, and approximates linear and nonlinear continuum models of heat transfer. Aria uses the SIERRA Framework, which provides data management services commonly required by computational mechanics software, and facilitates the development of coupled, multi-mechanics applications for massively parallel computers. The mathematical models in Aria are based heavily on those of COYOTE, a well-established thermal analysis program that was also developed at Sandia and its ASC code predecessor, Calore. Aria, Calore and COYOTE share a significant body of numerical methods, which are described in detail by Reddy and Gartling. Throughout this document, the terms software and implementation are synonymous with the Aria thermal-fluid analysis computer program.

Unsteady radiant heating of conical foil receptors.

The time dependent thermal equations of two types of conical radiation detectors are discussed and solved for a step function application of radiation parallel to the axis of the cases. The first type has a heat sink at the base and the second has the vertex buried in a heat sink to a variable proportion of its total height. It is found that the first case has the lower sensitivity and better time response. The time response of the second case is improved by more deeply burying the vertex, but to the detriment of sensitivity. At no value of this inclusion can both a superior sensitivity and time response be achieved for the second case.

High temperature - low mass solar blanket

Interconnect materials and designs for use with ultrathin silicon solar cells are discussed, as well as the results of an investigation of the applicability of parallel-gap resistance welding for interconnecting these cells. Data relating contact pull strength and cell electrical degradation to variations in welding parameters such as time, voltage and pressure are presented. Methods for bonding ultrathin cells to flexible substances and for bonding thin (75 micrometers) covers to these cells are described. Also, factors influencing fabrication yield and approaches for increasing yield are discussed. The results of vacuum thermal cycling and thermal soak tests on prototype ultrathin cell test coupons and one solar module blanket are presented.
