A test program was set up early in the Explorer XIII program to simulate as nearly as possible all expected environmental conditions to which the spacecraft would be subjected during the ascending phase of the trajectory and while in orbit. These tests included spin, acceleration, thermal-vacuum, vibration, and shock. Functional tests were performed on individual modules of the telemeter system. The test procedure started with breadboard construction of telemeter components. Circuits were evaluated in this phase, and components chosen for prototype construction. Prior to the prototype environmental tests, it was found desirable to construct a mock-up structure for preliminary evaluation of the spacecraft hardware.

This is a companion to an illustrated history book with the same title. This set of electronic files includes the full text and images in the book, as well as additional material. Interviews, photographs, and biographies of the U.S. Astronauts, cosmonauts, and team members for the Shuttle-Mir Program are available. STS Mission Summaries for each mission involved can be viewed, including launch and landing details, crew lists, and mission highlights. Photographs and videos from each mission are included, as well as diagrams of different spacecraft, and computer-generated animations of the Mir deorbit, collision, and flyaround. Additional documents include mission status reports, published documents, news releases, personal letters, and oral histories. The experiments carried out on Mir are described, highlighting combustion and fluid physics research, life in microgravity, and research of the development of the solar system. The focus on improving space technology and planning for the International Space Station is explained. The main features of the book itself include: (1) Training and Operations; (2) Long Duration Psychology; (3) Bilingual Blues; and (4) Earth Observations.

Life cycle tests being run on the 50 A lightweight nickel hydrogen flight battery are discussed and the preliminary results are presented.
It is considered by the Flight Mechanics Panel of AGARD as vitally important that the NATO flight test community meet regularly so that new techniques for flight test, instrumentation and data analysis and lessons learned from past and on-going programs be disseminated to ensure that safe efficient cost-effective and timely testing is accomplished. There are many new systems being tested or planned for testing in the near future. These include programmable signal processor radars, integrated flight, fire and propulsion control systems, thrust vectoring, low observable technologies, multifunction pilot displays and multisensor integration. Acquisition and processing of large quantities of avionics multiplex data are challenges that must be met. There is a need for greater use of simulators and other hardware-in-the-loop ground test facilities.

Pre-flight testing is critical to the success of any flight test program. Pre-flight tests are performed to measure and evaluate the characteristics of an aircraft in a non-flying environment and to verify that these characteristics are as desired. Since aircraft systems are becoming more and more complex, conducting proper pre-flight testing to help identify system characteristics and deficiencies prior to flight is more important now than ever before. Much flight test time has been lost fixing problems that should have been found and corrected prior to flight. Accidents have occurred because pre-flight tests and verification procedures were not conducted thoroughly enough to identify the aircraft's characteristics properly or to find system discrepancies. Proper pre-flight testing helps ensure that the aircraft is ready to fly and contributes toward an efficient, productive, and safe flight test program. The reader should be aware that this Section is dedicated to the testing that should take place prior to the first flight. There are other "pre-flight" tests that take place prior to each individual flight. These latter tests are not discussed in this Section. The following paragraphs of this Section describe significant tests that are usually accomplished prior to flying a new or highly modified aircraft. Test objectives, descriptions, products, and requirements are provided in the following subsections: 9.1 Wind tunnel tests 9.2 Simulation tests 9.3 Propulsion tests 9.4 Weight and balance tests 9.5 Ground vibration tests 9.6 Structural loads tests 9.7 Gain margin tests 9.8 Verification and calibration tests 9.9 Taxi tests The specific examples given and the test facilities mentioned in this Section will illustrate the approach taken and the techniques used by the US Air Force; however, they are typical of those used by other test organizations.
Quantitative ataxia test battery to assess psychomotor performance and postural equilibrium under rotating environments and other stresses
Developmental thermal vacuum (TVAC) testing is a critical step in maturing hardware designs and validating performance prior to flight qualification. Unlike qualification or acceptance testing, developmental testing provides flexibility to explore design margins, uncover integration challenges, and refine test approaches before formal verification activities begin. This presentation highlights the value of developmental testing while sharing common pitfalls encountered during developmental TVAC campaigns. Lessons learned from hands-on testing experience, including extensive developmental testing at cryogenic temperatures, will be shared in this presentation. Topics include test planning and preparation, instrumentation strategies, contamination control considerations, troubleshooting unexpected anomalies, and approaches for staying on schedule while meeting test objectives. The audience will gain practical insights and best practices that can improve test efficiency, reduce risk, and enhance the overall success of future developmental TVAC efforts.

In this short presentation format, we will provide a set of useful equations, relationships, and physical interpretations direct from the damped two-mode interaction problem. We will demonstrate that the results from the two-mode interaction problem are in direct agreement with observed test data. Practical methods for estimating the parameters driving the relations direct from modal test data are provided. We finalize with two examples demonstrating weak and strong interactions.
