(abstract) The Role of the Deep Space Network for Cassini

Cassini radio science experiments have several categories of requirements for DSN tracking services. The three main areas for upgrade are in Ka-band, long-term frequence stability, and short-term frequency stability/phase noise level.

Learning Search Control Knowledge for Deep Space Network Scheduling

While the general class of most scheduling problems is NP-hard in worst-case complexity, in practice, for specific distributions of problems and constraints, domain-specific solutions have been shown to perform in much better than exponential time.

Spacecraft Beacon Monitoring for Efficient Use of The Deep Space Network

This paper describes a new way of supporting highly autonomous missions being considered for use on upcoming NASA missions to Europa and Pluto. The spacecraft will have on-board intelligence to detemine whether it is healthy and when ground contact is needed. It will transmit one of 4 messages to the ground instead of normal full engineering telemetry of the spacecraft health.

Deep Space Network Scheduling Using Evolutionary Computational Methods

The paper presents the specific approach taken to formulate the problem in terms of gene encoding, fitness function, and genetic operations. The genome is encoded such that a subset of the scheduling constraints is automatically satisfied. Several fitness functions are formulated to emphasize different aspects of the scheduling problem. The optimal solutions of the different fitness functions demonstrate the trade-off of the scheduling problem and provide insight into a conflict resolution process.

Characterization of High-Speed IF Digitizers for Use by NASA Deep Space Network

My project primarily focused on the evaluation of several candidate converters to determine which provides the best overall performance for the needs of the DSCC Downlink Array (DDA). Of particular concern was the flatness of the gain and group delay of the converter over the Intermediate Frequency (IF) bandwidth, as excessive variation interferes with the beam forming that occurs when combining the signals from many antennas. In addition, converter nonlinearity and noise were evaluated as these could limit the DDA's ability to resolve weak signals, particularly in the presence of large interferers. The sensitivity of the noise at the output of the converters due to noise in the power supplies and jitter in the analog-to-digital converters (ADC) and the reference clock were also evaluated. Specifically, I worked with various high speed (1280 to 2000 megahertz sampling clock) ADCs.

A Study of Phased Array Antennas for NASA's Deep Space Network

In this paper we briefly discuss various options but focus on the feasibility of the phased arrays as a viable option for this application. Of particular concern and consideration will be the cost, reliability, and performance compared to the present 70-meter antenna system, particularly the gain/noise temperature levels in the receive mode. Many alternative phased arrays including planar horizontal arrays, hybrid mechanically/electronically steered arrays, phased array of mechanically steered reflectors, multi-faceted planar arrays, phased array-fed lens antennas, and planar reflect-arrays are compared and their viability is assessed. Although they have many advantages including higher reliability, near-instantaneous beam switching or steering capability, the cost of such arrays is presently prohibitive and it is concluded that the only viable array options at the present are the arrays of a few or many small reflectors. The active planar phased arrays, however, may become feasible options in the next decade and can be considered for deployment in smaller configurations as supplementary options.

Coarse-Grain Bandwidth Estimation Techniques for Large-Scale Space Network

In this paper, we describe a top-down analysis and simulation approach to size the bandwidths of a store-andforward network for a given network topology, a mission traffic scenario, and a set of data types with different latency requirements. We use these techniques to estimate the wide area network (WAN) bandwidths of the ground links for different architecture options of the proposed Integrated Space Communication and Navigation (SCaN) Network.

Designing the United States' initial 'Deep-Space Networks' - Choices for the Pioneer lunar-probe attempts of 1958-59

The paper describes two separate networks for ground-support stations, designed, respectively, by the Space Technology Laboratories (STL) and the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), to support the series of early Pioneer lunar-probe attempts. Particular attention is given to the characteristics of an ideal ground-support station and to the criteria used for the selection of the antenna, the antenna station site, and the frequency for the STL and JPL networks.
